Build Introduction

This might be one of the hardest hitting builds in the game, but at the cost of our defenses. It is a pure glass cannon build. As such, we recommend this build to be played only in Softcore mode. This is a very interesting Ancestral Warchief totem build that utilizes the Inquisitor’s elemental penetration key node. We will be converting all of our damage to Elemental damage and our critical strikes will be hitting for 100% of their damage. With some careful positioning, you will be able to clear maps 7-8 levels above you with ease, that is how insane the damage of this build is. You will have around 700% critical strike multiplier and 100% critical strike chance – and that damage will be penetrating all of the enemy’s resistance. The build requires us to move all of the time and position carefully to avoid damage, as it is very squishy. As the helmet of choice, Abyssus Abyssus says, “When you have slain all of your enemies, what is left to fear?’‘. If you want to test how high your damage can go in Path of Exile, then this is definitely the build for you.

Pros & Cons

Pros

+ Insane amount of damage
+ Average item cost
+ League Starter
+ Hiding behind totems from danger
+ Reflect damage is not a problem
+ Great boss killer

Cons

- Totem gameplay is not for everyone
- Squishy / not viable for Hardcore
- Not as fast as some other builds
- Requires us to spam some abilities like Phase Run
- Early leveling might prove a challenge

Playstyle

As mentioned above, our main skill will be Ancestral Warchief Ancestral Warchief and for mobility we are going to be using Phase Run Phase Run and Quicksilver flasks. Our main job will be avoiding danger and making sure we have all of our Ancestral Warchief totems placed correctly so they can attack, as well as staying close to them so they are active. We are going to be using Summon Ice Golem Summon Ice Golem for additional critical strike chance plus Herald of Ash Herald of Ash and Hatred Hatred. We will be casting Storm Brand Storm Brand so we can get extra Power charges. We will also be using Vaal Ancestral Warchief Vaal Ancestral Warchief for bosses and huge packs. Our main concern will be Physical damage, as we will be wearing the Abyssus Abyssus helmet, however we will still have a decent chance to block attacks, because we will be using a Staff. As we said above, the build is a pure glass cannon, so if you are afraid to die, we do not recommend it.

Passive tree

Early Game

In the early stage of the game our primary focus will be getting the additional second totem so we can switch to Ancestral Warchief Ancestral Warchief as soon as possible. Or use two Ancestral Protector Ancestral Protector‘s at the same time. Plus we will start to get some critical strike chance and health, so our passive tree should look like this

Mid game

Now that we already have our Ancestral Warchief Ancestral Warchief, we must increase the damage it deals and get some extra health and defenses. While leveling up to level 60 we will be getting lots of damage nodes to compensate the fact that we will be using The Stormheart The Stormheart until we switch to The Stormwall The Stormwall at level 60. Your passive tree should now look like this

End Game Passive Tree

You can now head for the Scion life wheel and pick the 4th power charge for our Storm Brand Storm Brand Power Charge On Critical Support Power Charge On Critical Support combo. Our end game passive tree should look like this

Ascendancy – Inquisitor

Normal Lab – Righteous Providence

Righteous Providence will give us additional critical strike chance and critical strike multiplier and we will be taking it first so we can get to Inevitable Judgement faster.

Cruel Lab – Inevitable Judgement

Inevitable Judgement is the core node in this build. It makes our critical strikes penetrate all of the enemy’s resistance. As we will be converting all of our damage to Elemental damage and we will have 100% crit chance – that means our entire damage will be pure and no damage will be negated by the enemy.

Merciless Lab – Instruments of Virtue

Instruments of Virtue will give us 50% more attack damage after we cast a spell. We will be using Phase Run Phase Run and Storm Brand Storm Brand as activators.

Eternal Lab – Augury of Penitence

Augury of Penitence will give us some extra defense against elemental attacks and of course even more damage for us.

Gem Links

Ancestral Warchief (6 link)

Ancestral Warchief Ancestral Warchief is your main skill, which should be 6-Linked by priority from top to bottom as follows:

  1. Vaal Ancestral Warchief Vaal Ancestral Warchief
  2. Faster Attacks Support Faster Attacks Support
  3. Melee Physical Damage Support Melee Physical Damage Support
  4. Increased Critical Strikes Support Increased Critical Strikes Support
  5. Increased Critical Damage Support Increased Critical Damage Support
  6. Elemental Damage with Attacks Support Elemental Damage with Attacks Support

Note: If you have at least 80% crit chance you can also take out the Increased Critical Strikes Support Increased Critical Strikes Support and put Ruthless Support Ruthless Support in instead.

Immortal Call / Summon Ice Golem (4-Link)

Here we will be using the traditional combo:

  1. Immortal Call Immortal Call
  2. Cast when Damage Taken Support Cast when Damage Taken Support
  3. Increased Duration Support Increased Duration Support
  4. Summon Ice Golem Summon Ice Golem

Storm Brand (4-Link)

We will be mainly using Storm Brand Storm Brand to get extra Power charges. We should link it with Power Charge On Critical Support Power Charge On Critical Support. We will be casting it once at least every 12 seconds to refresh our Power charges. So the links should be:

  1. Storm Brand Storm Brand
  2. Power Charge On Critical Support Power Charge On Critical Support
  3. Increased Area of Effect Support Increased Area of Effect Support
  4. Less Duration Support Less Duration Support

Note : The most important thing is to link your Storm Brand to Power Charge on Critical Support. Everything else is a bonus. You can also put Swift Affliction Support Swift Affliction Support if you do not have the right colors for Area of Effect or Less Duration Support.

Other Gems

We use Hatred Hatred and Herald of Ash Herald of Ash as our auras, as well as using Phase Run Phase Run. Note that we must use Phase Run as much as possible to gain the extra damage from the Instruments of Virtue ascendancy note.

Bandits & Pantheon

Bandits

Helping Alira will give us extra critical strike multiplier, all resistance, and Mana regeneration. We benefit from all three with this build.

Pantheon

Major God

For a major god, the best one is Soul of Solaris, as it would give us that extra physical damage reduction when there is only one nearby enemy. With this build we should be running from crowded spaces and just deploying our totems. So Soul of Solaris will help us with that extra damage reduction.

Minor God

For a minor god, the best one is Soul of Ralakesh, as it gives a damage reduction while we are moving, and with this build we would be moving all of the time.

Gear / Items

Weapon

In this build The Stormwall The Stormwall is a mandatory item, as it converts 50% of our physical damage to cold damage and 50% of our physical damage to lightning damage. This means that all of our damage will now be Elemental damage, combining this with the Inquisitor’s Inevitable Judgement ascendancy node, is the secret ingredient behind this build. A regular The Stormwall The Stormwall is quite cheap, as this build is not meta, but the ones with more physical damage might prove to be quite expensive.

Helmet

The next mandaanttory item is Abyssus Abyssus. It will give us a nice physical damage boost and a huge amount of critical strike multiplier. The price of Abyssus depends on the increased physical damage to us – the lower the damage the higher the price. The critical strike multiplier is also important. You can start with a cheap Abyssus Abyssus and buy a better one when you have a higher budget.

Note: You can try to get a Lab enchant that increases your Ancestral Warchief Ancestral Warchief damage, but if you try to buy one with it it will be extremely expensive.

Body Armour

You can use any armor you want, as long as it is 6-linked. If you have that extra budget, the one we recommend is Loreweave Loreweave as it gives us extra elemental damage, resistance and some more critical strike chance. The stats to look on a rare armour are:

  1. + % total Elemental Resistances (until capped)
  2. + % to maximum life
  3. % Increased Maximum Life

Gloves

Any well-rolled rare gloves will do the trick here. Make sure they have the following stats:

  1. +% total Elemental Resistances (until capped)
  2. +% to maximum life
  3. +% increased Attack speed

Belt

One of the best belts for this build is The Tactician The Tactician, as we will be benefit from everything it has to offer and we will also have the 200 Strength and 200 Intelligence requirement.

Note: A good The Tactician The Tactician might be quite expensive. Make sure you buy one just so you can get the benefits, and when you have the budget you can buy a better one.

Boots

Any rare boots will do as long as they have these stats :

  1. +% total Elemental Resistances (until capped)
  2. +% to maximum life
  3. +% Movement speed increase

Rings

The best rings for this build are Rare rings which have the following stats:

  1. +% total Elemental Resistances (until capped)
  2. +% to maximum life
  3. +% to Global Critical Strike Multiplier
  4. +% increased Elemental Damage with Attack Skills

Note: Rings with all these stats are quite expensive. Prioritize getting your resistance to the max and make sure they have +# to maximum life. After that you can decide between Critical Strike Multiplier and the Elemental damage increase, whichever has more % increase if you cannot afford both of them at once. If you have that extra budget, The Taming The Taming is a great option.

Amulet

Same as with the rings, we are looking for the same stats:

  1. +% total Elemental Resistances (until capped)
  2. +% to maximum life
  3. +% to Global Critical Strike Multiplier
  4. +% increased Elemental Damage with Attack Skills

Jewels

We are going to prioritize regular jewels over abyssal ones, and make sure they are a combination of some of the following stats:

  1. +% to maximum life
  2. +% to Global Critical Strike Multiplier
  3. +% to Melee Critical Strike Multiplier
  4. +% increased Physical Damage with Staves
  5. +% increased Physical Damage with Two Handed Melee Weapons
  6. +% increased Global Physical Damage
  7. +% increased Attack Speed
  8. +% increased Area Damage

Note: It is also good to use the Spire of Stone Spire of Stone unique jewel so your totems will not be stunned.

Note: Some of these jewel combinations might prove to be quite expensive. Never spend too much currency on a jewel. There are always cheap jewels; for example, as Staves are not popular: “+% increased Physical Damage with Staves” will be a lot cheaper than “+% to Global Critical Strike Multiplier” and have the same damage increase.

Flasks

We will not be needing any special Flasks for this build, just make sure we have one with a modifier that removes bleeding effect (Staunching). That will help a lot as we will be taking extra Physical damage. Make sure we also have Quick Silver flasks as we do not have any special movement skills. But as always, if you have the extra budget and want to maximize your damage dealt, Taste of Hate Taste of Hate, The Overflowing Chalice The Overflowing Chalice or Atziri's Promise Atziri's Promise are all great options. Try to get your health regeneration flasks to be with instant effect; removes Freeze and Chill on use is also a great option to have.

Note: If you are going to be buying one of the Unique Flasks, buy only one of them. There is no point in having the three of them at the same time. It is more important to have your Health Flasks and Quicksilver Flasks. We do not need Mana Flasks in this build.

Leveling

As a reminder, we have several guides to help you level up a character.

This build might prove a little bit tricky to level up as the the build is really lacking damage in the early parts of the game. One of the spells we recommend leveling up early with is Storm Brand Storm Brand. You can always switch to Ancestral Protector Ancestral Protector, but make sure you get Herald of Ash Herald of Ash and Hatred Hatred first. The most useful leveling unique which will make your experience much smoother is The Stormheart The Stormheart. You can start using it at level 28 and that is when you also get your Ancestral Warchief Ancestral Warchief. That is when you can fully switch to the build. After you switch, your damage might not be the best as there will not be any better weapons than The Stormheart The Stormheart until we get to level 60 and equip our The Stormwall The Stormwall and Abyssus Abyssus; after that It should be extremely easy. Make sure that between level 28-60, you occasionally switch your rare items for better ones that have more resists and life. Other leveling uniques that will help you include Tabula Rasa Tabula Rasa and Wanderlust Wanderlust.

Conclusion

This build is quite the heavy hitter, but has low defenses. If you are a fan of high damage glass cannon builds you should definitely give it a try. Once you get your gear you should be able to clear all of the game’s content with careful tactics and positioning.
