Blade Flurry Inquisitor Build Guide (PoE Blight 3.8)

Introduction

The Blade Flurry Inquisitor is a melee type of character that deals tons of elemental damage by dual wielding Swords. This is achieved by converting a large portion of our physical damage to elemental via Physical to Lightning Support Physical to Lightning Support and the Winter Spirit passive node. This is done in order to greatly benefit from Inquisitor’s Inevitable Judgement ascendancy node, which allows us to penetrate elemental resistances every time we critically strike.

The character has great balance between clearing and single target damage output and achieves a respectable amount of survivability.

Build Summary

The build can be played on a budget but we recommend having some currency saved up before you try this build. We are looking for two well-rolled Rapiers with at least 350pDPS. Early on, if you lack damage and not really care about survivability you can equip Abyssus Abyssus for the great damage boost it provides. A well-rolled Elder-based Body Armour is best in slot but it can be expensive, before that the build makes great use of unique Body Armours like Belly of the Beast Belly of the Beast, Loreweave Loreweave, Carcass Jack Carcass Jack and Inpulsa's Broken Heart Inpulsa's Broken Heart.

Pros & Cons

Pros

+ Hardcore viable
+ Good balance between clear speed and single target damage
+ Immense damage potential

Cons

- Requires great currency investment if you decide to gear well

Playstyle

Offensively, you should leap into monster packs and shatter them with a rapidly unleashed series of attacks via Blade Flurry Blade Flurry. A Totem like Ancestral Protector Ancestral Protector will improve your single target damage by doing damage itself and giving you an Attack Speed multiplier while it is active. War Banner War Banner should be dropped against bosses in order to gain the Adrenaline buff.

Defensively, the main idea of the build is to deal tons of Cold damage via Critical Strikes, which results in long Freezing effects on the enemies. You also reach a very good amount of Life along with reliable Life Leech.

For playstyle, considering Blade Flurry Blade Flurry achieves a respectable amount of area of effect you can attack from a decent distance, which will allow you to stay safe in most situations. Whenever you need to deal great amounts of single target damage, place your Totem and drop your War Banner War Banner, then start channelling your Blade Flurry as long as possible. Instruments of Virtue (Ascendancy node) should also be triggered by using things like Steelskin Steelskin.

Ascendancy, Passive tree, Bandits and Pantheons

Ascendancy (Templar – Inquisitor)

  1. Righteous Providence
  2. Inevitable Judgement
  3. Instruments of Virtue
  4. Augury of Patience

Righteous Providence will improve your Critical Strikes, and this is the first step in transitioning to Critical Strikes.

Inevitable Judgement is the reason Inquisitor is so powerful; ignoring enemy Elemental Resistances with Critical Strikes is very powerful, especially against bosses.

Augury of Patience provides great balance between defense and offense.

Instruments of Virtue will provide additional Attack Speed and Attack damage.

Passive tree

Here is the endgame passive tree for the build.

We focus on picking up efficient Sword nodes along with a lot of Life, dual wielding nodes, and some powerful melee Critical nodes like Disemboweling.

Bandits

For this specific build we should help Alira in Act II. The critical multiplier, flat mana regeneration, and 15% all elemental resistances are stronger than the 2 passive skill points.

Pantheons

Major: All major Pantheon powers can be beneficial for the build, although Soul of Solaris is probably the best choice in general.

Minor: Same as major Pantheons, all minor ones are useful for the build. We recommend Soul of Gruthkul, which improves physical damage mitigation.

Pantheon powers can be upgraded by using Divine Vessel in the Map Device while you are activating the particular Map that contains the boss you need. Once you’ve killed the boss and captured his soul, you need to deliver the vessel to Sin in Oriath.

Gems

Blade Flurry Blade Flurry is your signature skill, which should ideally be used in a 6-Link. For mobility, use Leap Slam Leap Slam. In order to reserve your Mana you should use Hatred Hatred, Herald of Ice Herald of Ice, and War Banner War Banner. Ancestral Protector Ancestral Protector will augment your single target damage whenever needed. Steelskin Steelskin is used in order to mitigate damage and trigger Instruments of Virtue (Ascendancy node).

For all the gem links we provide below, keep in mind that we list the gems in order of priority, meaning that if you lack the required number of sockets to fit all the gems, the first ones to drop are the ones at the bottom. Also note that in-game, as long as the sockets are linked, it makes no difference at all what order the gems are placed in.

Blade Flurry (6-Link)

Blade Flurry Blade Flurry is a melee area of effect channelling skill that deals damage based on how many stages you’ve charged. The longer you channel, the more damage you will deal. This is a universal 6-Link that works great for both clearing and single target.

  1. Blade Flurry Blade Flurry
  2. Physical to Lightning Support Physical to Lightning Support
  3. Infused Channelling Support Infused Channelling Support
  4. Elemental Damage with Attacks Support Elemental Damage with Attacks Support
  5. Pulverise Support Pulverise Support
  6. Rage Support Rage Support

Leap Slam (4-Link)

Leap Slam Leap Slam will improve your mobility by a great deal. Hitting enemies with the skill will give you the Fortify buff for a short duration.

  1. Leap Slam Leap Slam
  2. Faster Attacks Support Faster Attacks Support
  3. Fortify Support Fortify Support
  4. Blood Magic Support Blood Magic Support

Ancestral Protector (4-Link)

Ancestral Protector Ancestral Protector will augment your single target damage output against tough boss encounters.

  1. Ancestral Protector Ancestral Protector
  2. Melee Physical Damage Support Melee Physical Damage Support
  3. Maim Support Maim Support
  4. Ruthless Support Ruthless Support

Other Gems

Hatred Hatred, Herald of Ice Herald of Ice, and War Banner War Banner should be used in order to reserve your Mana. Steelskin Steelskin will allow you to mitigate incoming damage and trigger Inquisitor’s Instruments of Virtue.

Gearing

Capping your elemental resistances is essential and it should always be your top priority in any build; it should be the first thing you do when gearing up a character. Obtaining a 6-link, while very powerful and certainly recommended, can potentially be very expensive (requiring an average of 1500 Orbs of Fusing, obviously depending on your luck); as such, this should not really be a goal for you while gearing up, and you should instead settle for a 5-link until you have enough resources.

Helmet

A well rolled rare Helmet is best in slot. Abyssus Abyssus can also be used if you choose to go full glass-cannon. For labyrinth enchant, look for any Blade Flurry Blade Flurry augmentation. The rare affix priority is:

  1. +#% total Elemental Resistance (until capped)
  2. +# to maximum life (80)
  3. % increased Maximum Life (Pristine Fossil Pristine Fossil)
  4. # to Intelligence

Body Armour

You should get a rare Body Armour that is rolled with Serrated Fossil Serrated Fossil in order to get the mod “Socketed Gems are Supported by Level # Maim”, which will result in a 7-Link; acquiring such Body Armour should be expensive and it is also best-in-slot for the build. Depending on personal preference you can use a wide range of other unique Body Armours like Loreweave Loreweave, Carcass Jack Carcass Jack, Loreweave Loreweave and Belly of the Beast Belly of the Beast. The rare affix priority is:

  1. +#% total Elemental Resistance (until capped)
  2. +# to maximum life (80)
  3. Socketed Gems are Supported by Level # Maim (Serrated Fossil Serrated Fossil)
  4. % increased Maximum Life (Pristine Fossil Pristine Fossil; Elder Prefix)
  5. Attacks have +#% to Critical Strike Chance (Elder Suffix)

Gloves

We are looking for a pair of well-rolled rare Spiked Gloves Spiked Gloves. The rare affix priority is:

  1. +#% total Elemental Resistance (until capped)
  2. +# to maximum life (60)
  3. Adds # to # Physical Damage to Attacks
  4. % increased Attack Speed
  5. # to Accuracy Rating (at least 300)

Boots

Rare pair of Boots is a great choice for the build. Kaom's Roots Kaom's Roots can also be used. For labyrinth enchant, look for “16% increased Attack and Cast Speed if you’ve Killed Recently”. The rare affix priority is:

  1. +#% total Elemental Resistance (until capped)
  2. +# to maximum life (80)
  3. % increased Maximum Life (Pristine Fossil Pristine Fossil)
  4. % increased Movement Speed

Belt

A well-rolled Stygian Vise Stygian Vise outclasses other Belt choices. The rare affix priority is:

  1. +#% total Elemental Resistance (until capped)
  2. +# to maximum life (80)
  3. % increased Elemental Damage with Attack skills (at least 25%)
  4. % increased Elemental Damage (Prismatic Fossil Prismatic Fossil)

Amulet

A well-rolled Shaper-based Amulet is best in slot. In this item slot you should fill attribute requirements. The rare affix priority is:

  1. +#% total Elemental Resistance (until capped)
  2. +# to maximum life (50)
  3. Gain #% of Physical Damage as Extra Cold Damage
  4. Gain #% of Physical Damage as Extra Lightning Damage
  5. % increased Elemental Damage with Attack skills (at least 25%)
  6. % to Global Critical Multiplier

Rings

Well rolled rare Rings are best in slot. Ideally, you would want one with a preferred Curse on hit; for Assassin's Mark Assassin's Mark you will need a Shaper base, while for Warlord's Mark Warlord's Mark you will need Elder base. The rare affix priority is:

  1. +#% total Elemental Resistance (until capped)
  2. +# to maximum life (50)
  3. Curse Enemies with Level # Warlord’s Mark on Hit (Elder Suffix)
  4. Curse Enemies with Level # Assassin’s Mark on Hit (Shaper Suffix)
  5. Adds # to # Physical Damage to Attacks
  6. % increased Elemental Damage with Attack skills (at least 25%)
  7. # to Accuracy Rating (at least 300)

Weapon

Ideally, we are looking for two well-rolled Physical Rapiers(a type of Sword), having around 350pDPS in the beginning would be great. The build can also make great use of rare Elemental Swords. Scaeva Scaevas can be great budget options until we manage to acquire such Swords.

The rare affix priority for Physical Swords is:

  1. % increased Physical Damage
  2. % increased Physical Damage / # to Accuracy Rating (Hybrid)
  3. % increased Attack Speed
  4. % increased Critical Chance

The rare affix priority for Elemental Swords is:

  1. Adds # to # Cold Damage
  2. Adds # to # Lightning Damage
  3. % increased Attack Speed
  4. % increased Critical Chance
  5. Adds # to # Fire Damage

Flasks

Diamond Flask Diamond Flask is mandatory in every Critical-based build; this is a good flask to have Curse or Freeze immunity on. Divine Life Flask Divine Life Flask should used as Instant or half-Instant along with Bleeding Removal suffix. For the other flask slots we recommend using Lion's Roar Lion's Roar, Taste of Hate Taste of Hate and a Basalt Flask Basalt Flask. Make sure you have Bleeding, Curse and Freezing immunity on your flasks.

Be sure to check out our Flask Crafting Guide to learn everything you need to know about how to set up your non-Unique flasks.

Jewels

There are no mandatory build-enabling Jewels for the build. A Watcher's Eye Watcher's Eye with Hatred Hatred mods can be very powerful, but expensive.

Regular Jewel Affix Priority

  1. % increased Maximum Life
  2. % increased Attack Speed with Swords
  3. % increased Attack Speed
  4. % increased Damage with One Handed Weapons
  5. % increased Damage with Swords

Abyssal Jewel Affix Priority

  1. Maximum Life (at least 35)
  2. % chance to gain Onslaught for # seconds on Kill
  3. % increased Attack Speed if you’ve dealt a Critical Strike Recently
  4. % to Global Critical Strike Multiplier
  5. % to Critical Strike Multiplier if you’ve Killed Recently
  6. Adds # to # Physical Damage to Sword Attacks
  7. Adds # to # Physical Damage to Attacks

Leveling

As a reminder, we have several guides to help you level up a character.

The build can be leveled with Ground Slam Ground Slam until you get Ice Crash Ice Crash at level 28.

Leveling Trees

The early passive skill tree is very straight forward. As in order build guides, we recommend transitioning to Critical Strikes around level 60 or above, at this point you should have Inevitable Judgement and you should start picking up efficient Critical nodes like Dismembering, Fatal Blade and Disemboweling.

Useful Leveling Unique Items

As you begin a new character, there are few unique items that can boost your power exponentially. Tabula Rasa Tabula Rasa allows you to have a 6-Linked skill as early as you get the gems. Wanderlust Wanderlust gives a decent movement speed, which will make your leveling that much more efficient. Goldrim Goldrim provides a lot of elemental resistances, this will let you worry less about gearing when approaching certain Act encounters.

If you are a new player (or if this is your first character for the league), then note that obtaining these items will be very difficult, if not impossible. They are rare drops, which you can otherwise only acquire if you have saved up currency, so do not focus on them too much, and instead simply look for items that match the affix priorities listed in the gearing section above.

Gem Progression

Using Tabula Rasa Tabula Rasa will allow you to have 6-Link gem setups early on, which is why we show such examples below. If you cannot get Tabula Rasa (or another item with a 6-Link), then simply prioritize the first gems in each link provided below.

In order to acquire gems that are not available to your class as a quest reward, simply ask a friend to buy them off vendors for you, or buy them yourself from Sioasa in The Library in Act III Library.

From level 1, you should use the following link.

  1. Ground Slam Ground Slam
  2. Onslaught Support Onslaught Support
  3. Chance to Bleed Support Chance to Bleed Support

At level 4, you should add War Banner War Banner and Ancestral Protector Ancestral Protector for additional damage. Dash Dash helps out by improving your mobility early on. Steelskin Steelskin can be used whenever you need the damage mitigation.

  1. Vaal Ground Slam Vaal Ground Slam
  2. Maim Support Maim Support
  3. Added Fire Damage Support Added Fire Damage Support
  4. Ruthless Support Ruthless Support
  5. Onslaught Support Onslaught Support

Pulverise Support Pulverise Support should be added in the main link once you reach level 31.

FAQ

What map mods are impossible to do?

Elemental reflect is impossible to do. No Regeneration and Cannot Leech should also be skipped.

Conclusion

The Blade Flurry Inquisitor is attack-based character that dual-wields Swords in order to deal immense amounts of elemental Critical Strike damage, which penetrates elemental resistances.
