Introduction

The Cast While Channeling Winter Orb & Ice Spear Inquisitor is a Cold-based spell caster that excels in dealing tons of Critical damage while relying on a large Energy Shield pool and Energy Shield leech in order to survive. In this particular build guide we choose to utilize Cast while Channelling Support Cast while Channelling Support in order to cast Ice Spear Ice Spear while channelling Winter Orb Winter Orb. This results in great clear speed via the Winter Orb skill, while we also have very reliable and strong single target damage output from the free Ice Spear casts.

Build Summary

Although it is recommended to go Chaos Innoculation as soon as possible, you can play this build even as a Life-based character, which would be much cheaper to start; it is even possible to play the build as a league-starter. When it comes to the endgame gear we are mainly looking for a high amount of Energy Shield and Critical modifiers, which are very efficient in this build simply because when you Critically Strike an enemy you ignore their resistances via the Inquisitor’s Inevitable Judgement.

Pros & Cons

Pros

+ Hardcore viable
+ Great clear speed
+ Decent endgame potential
+ Cast while Channelling Support Cast while Channelling Support has different playstyle compared to other builds

Cons

- Bad physical damage mitigation
- Dies to Elemental Reflect

Playstyle

Offensively, keeping few stages of Winter Orb and moving forward will be enough to clear regulars pack of monsters. Whenever you encounter a tougher foe you should sit in place and channel as much as possible, which will result in tons of extra damage from both Winter Orb Winter Orb and Ice Spear Ice Spear.

Defensively, we achieve a respectable Energy Shield pool, along with Freezing everything in our path, rendering enemies helpless.

For playstyle, we aim to clear as quickly as possible. For mobility, we use Shield Charge all the time, since this is the most efficient way to move around. Depending on how much Cast Speed you have, you should channel between one and two seconds between moving from screen to screen.

Ascendancy, Passive Tree , Bandits, and Pantheons

Ascendancy (Templar – Inquisitor)

  1. Righteous Providence
  2. Inevitable Judgement
  3. Sanctuary
  4. Pious Path

Righteous Providence provides a lot of Critical modifiers along with increasing the effect of your Freezes and Shocks.

Inevitable Judgement is the bulk of damage of the build; ignoring elemental resistances with Critical Strikes proves to be very strong, especially with this build.

Sanctuary provides 10% overall damage increase against enemies that stand on Consecrated Ground, and it also allows you to have better uptime on that particular ground effect.

Pious Path provides a lot of offense and sustain in the form of 200 Energy Shield per second and Elemental Ailment immunity.

Passive Tree

This is what the endgame passive skill tree looks like.

Main keystone notables we utilize are Chaos Inoculation and Zealot’s Oath. Besides that we pick all of the efficient Energy Shield nodes along with Critical modifiers and extra damage from nodes like Heart of Ice and Spiritual Aid. We also focus on picking Energy Shield leech, which is very strong stat in this build.

Bandits

For this specific build we should help Alira in Act II. The Critical Multiplier, flat Mana regeneration, and 15% all elemental resistances are stronger than the 2 passive skill points.

Pantheons

Major: All major Pantheon powers can be beneficial for the build, although Soul of Solaris is probably the best choice in general.

Minor: Same as major Pantheons, all minor ones are useful for the build. We recommend Soul of Gruthkul, which improves physical damage mitigation.

Pantheon powers can be upgraded by using Divine Vessel in the Map Device while you are activating the particular Map that contains the boss you need. Once you have killed the boss and captured his soul, you need to deliver the vessel to Sin in Oriath.

Gems

The Cast while Channelling Support Cast while Channelling Support gem setup is your signature gem setup, which should ideally be used in a 6-Link. For mobility, use Shield Charge Shield Charge. Discipline Discipline will improve your Energy Shield pool by a great amount. Zealotry Zealotry complements the build very well when it comes to offensive buffs.

For all the gem links we provide below, keep in mind that we list the gems in order of priority, meaning that if you lack the required number of sockets to fit all the gems, the first ones to drop are the ones at the bottom. Also note that in-game, as long as the sockets are linked, it makes no difference at all what order the gems are placed in.

Cast While Channelling (6-Link)

Cast while Channelling Support Cast while Channelling Support is used in combination with Winter Orb Winter Orb and Ice Spear Ice Spear in order to deal tons of Cold damage. We recommend one link that works great for both clearing and single target.

  1. Winter Orb Winter Orb
  2. Cast while Channelling Support Cast while Channelling Support
  3. Ice Spear Ice Spear
  4. Greater Multiple Projectiles Support Greater Multiple Projectiles Support
  5. Energy Leech Support Energy Leech Support

Steelskin (2-Link)

Other Gems

Flame Dash Flame Dash can be socketed for additional mobility. Depending on your Mana situation you can add in additional Mana reservation buffs like Discipline Discipline, Hatred Hatred or Zealotry Zealotry. For golems, you should use Summon Lightning Golem Summon Lightning Golem.

Gearing

Capping your elemental resistances is essential and it should always be your top priority in any build; it should be the first thing you do when gearing up a character. Obtaining a 6-link, while very powerful and certainly recommended, can potentially be very expensive (requiring an average of 1500 Orbs of Fusing, obviously depending on your luck); as such, this should not really be a goal for you while gearing up, and you should instead settle for a 5-link until you have enough resources. A simple Tabula Rasa Tabula Rasa can carry you a long way. Besides that, having decently rolled rare items will be good enough to clear most game content.

Helmet

Well rolled rare Helmet is best in slot. For enchant, look for “15% Chance to gain a Power Charge on Critical Strike with Ice Spear”. The Rare affix priority is:

  1. +#% total Elemental Resistances (until capped)
  2. Energy Shield (200)

Body Armour

A well rolled Shaper-based Body Armour can be very powerful. Inpulsa's Broken Heart Inpulsa's Broken Heart can increase your clear speed by a great amount as long as you have some Lightning damage added to your spells. The Rare affix priority is:

  1. +#% total Elemental Resistances (until capped)
  2. Energy Shield (at least 500)
  3. Spells have +#% to Critical Strike Chance

Gloves

Well rolled rare pair of Gloves is best in slot. For item base, look for Fingerless Silk Gloves Fingerless Silk Gloves for the additional damage provided by the implicit mod. The Rare affix priority is:

  1. +#% total Elemental Resistances (until capped)
  2. Energy Shield (at least 150)
  3. % Increased Attack Speed (for faster Shield Charge Shield Charge)

Boots

Well-rolled rare boots are best in slot. The Rare affix priority is:

  1. +#% total Elemental Resistances (until capped)
  2. Energy Shield (at least 150)
  3. % Increased Movement speed (at least 20%)

Belt

A well rolled Stygian Vise Stygian Vise is best in slot. A Crystal Belt Crystal Belt also works very well. The Rare affix priority is:

  1. +#% total Elemental Resistances (until capped)
  2. % Increased Cold Damage (Frigid Fossil Frigid Fossil)
  3. % increased Elemental Damage (Prismatic Fossil Prismatic Fossil)

Amulet

Eye of Chayula Eye of Chayula will solve all of your Stun-lock problems. If you choose to deal with Stuns in other way you can also use a rare Amulet, which would be better in the long run. The Rare affix priority is:

  1. +#% total Elemental Resistances (until capped)
  2. Global Critical Strike Multiplier (at least 25%)
  3. % Increased Spell Damage
  4. % Increased Cold Damage

Rings

Dream Fragments Dream Fragments is a great unique Ring that solves issues with Freezes and Chill effects, which gives you some freedom when rolling Flasks too. For the second Ring you can simply use a well rolled rare Opal Ring Opal Ring. You can definitely use two rare Rings for better endgame potential. The Rare affix priority is:

  1. +#% total Elemental Resistances (until capped)
  2. % increased Elemental Damage (Prismatic Fossil Prismatic Fossil)
  3. % increased Cold Damage

Weapon

The build will benefit most from a well rolled rare Dagger, since Daggers implicitly provide Global Critical Strike Chance, they also have high base Attack Speed, which will improve your Shield Charge Shield Charge speed by a great deal. The Rare affix priority is:

  1. % Increased Spell Damage (at least 40%)
  2. % Increased Critical Strike Chance for Spells (at least 90%)
  3. % Increased Attack Speed (at least 15%)
  4. % to Global Critical Strike Multiplier (at least 25%)

Shield

A well rolled Shield is best in slot. The Rare affix priority is:

  1. +#% total Elemental Resistances (until capped)
  2. Energy Shield (at least 250)
  3. % Increased Critical Strike Chance for Spells (at least 90%)
  4. % Increased Spell Damage (at least 50%)

Flasks

Diamond Flask Diamond Flask is mandatory in every Critical-based build; this is a good flask to have Curse or Freeze immunity on. For the other flask slots you can improvise, we recommend having Basalt Flask Basalt Flask, Quicksilver Flask Quicksilver Flask and Granite Flask Granite Flask flasks. Make sure you have Bleeding, Curse and Freezing immunity on your flasks.

Be sure to check out our Flask Crafting Guide to learn everything you need to know about how to set up your non-Unique flasks.

Jewels

There are no mandatory Jewels for the build. A Watcher's Eye Watcher's Eye with Zealotry Zealotry mods would be ideal for the build but might be very expensive.

  2. % Increased Damage
  3. % Increased Area Damage
  4. % Increased Attack/Cast Speed
  5. % Increased Cold/Spell Damage

Leveling

As a reminder, we have several guides to help you level up a character.

The Cast While Channelling Winter Orb & Ice Spear Inquisitor can be leveled with Freezing Pulse Freezing Pulse up to level 38, at which point you can switch to your signature skill setup.

Leveling Trees

This is what your passive skill tree should look like before you transition to Critical Strikes and Chaos Inoculation.

Useful Leveling Unique Items

As you begin a new character, there are few unique items that can boost your power exponentially. Tabula Rasa Tabula Rasa allows you to have a 6-Linked skill as early as you get the gems. Wanderlust Wanderlust gives a decent movement speed, which will make your leveling that much more efficient. Goldrim Goldrim provides a lot of elemental resistances, this will let you worry less about gearing when approaching certain Act encounters. Lifesprig Lifesprig will fill your damage needs early on.

If you are a new player (or if this is your first character for the league), then note that obtaining these items will be very difficult, if not impossible. They are rare drops, which you can otherwise only acquire if you have saved up currency, so do not focus on them too much, and instead simply look for items that match the affix priorities listed in the gearing section above.

Gem Progression

Using Tabula Rasa Tabula Rasa will allow you to have 6-Link gem setups early on, which is why we show such examples below. If you cannot get Tabula Rasa (or another item with a 6-Link), then simply prioritize the first gems in each link provided below.

In order to acquire gems that are not available to your class as a quest reward, simply ask a friend to buy them off vendors for you, or buy them yourself from Sioasa in The Library in Act III Library.

From level 1, you should use the following link in Lifesprig Lifesprig.

  1. Freezing Pulse Freezing Pulse
  2. Onslaught Support Onslaught Support
  3. Arcane Surge Support Arcane Surge Support

At level 4, you can add Frost Bomb Frost Bomb for better damage output.

At level 10, you should add Flame Dash Flame Dash for additional mobility.

At level 16, you should add Herald of Ice Herald of Ice for additional damage.

By level 18, your Freezing Pulse Freezing Pulse link should look like this.

  1. Freezing Pulse Freezing Pulse
  2. Onslaught Support Onslaught Support
  3. Controlled Destruction Support Controlled Destruction Support
  4. Arcane Surge Support Arcane Surge Support
  5. Added Cold Damage Support Added Cold Damage Support
  6. Faster Casting Support Faster Casting Support

At level 24, you can add Discipline Discipline and Zealotry Zealotry in order to level the gems or even activate them if you are comfortable with having low amount of unreserved Mana.

At level 38, you should drop your Freezing Pulse Freezing Pulse for your signature gem setup. Keep in mind this gem setup is slightly changed since we are not yet investing into Critical Strikes and Chaos Inoculation, this is why we swap Energy Leech Support Energy Leech Support and Increased Critical Strikes Support Increased Critical Strikes Support with support gems that provide more damage for the leveling phase of the build.

  1. Winter Orb Winter Orb
  2. Cast while Channelling Support Cast while Channelling Support
  3. Ice Spear Ice Spear
  4. Controlled Destruction Support Controlled Destruction Support
  5. Hypothermia Support Hypothermia Support
  6. Cold Penetration Support Cold Penetration Support

Spiritual Aid allows Minion Damage to also affect us. Considering that Minion Damage nodes are more efficient than regular nodes we choose to go for Spiritual Aid.

Hey, here is the final passive skill tree. When it comes to the Inpulsa's Broken Heart Inpulsa's Broken Heart you can definitely use it to boost up the clear speed. Shavronne's Wrappings Shavronne's Wrappings is mainly used in builds that go Low-Life, which is not the case with this character.
