Guide Format

This build guide is split over multiple pages, both to prevent it from getting too long, as well as to help you better find the information you are looking for. In addition to the current page, which presents general information about the build and also contains a Leveling and FAQ section, we have the following pages:

Introduction

The Champion ascendancy class is one of the best choices when you choose to build an Impale-oriented character. For this particular character we choose to utilize the Facebreaker Facebreaker unique Gloves in combination with Rigwald's Curse Rigwald's Curse in order to build up great Critical Chance while being Unarmed. Abyssus Abyssus provides an immense amount of offensive power and its downside is mitigated by the vast amount of damage mitigation we accumulate in different ways.

The Champion’s Master of Metal provides a flat amount of Physical damage added to Attacks per Impale stack, which translates into tons of free damage when using the Facebreaker gloves.

Build Summary

The only expensive piece of equipment you will have to purchase is Rigwald's Curse Rigwald's Curse. Besides that both the Facebreaker Facebreaker and Abyssus Abyssus are very cheap, even for great rolls. Getting a 6-Link is expensive in every build of course. Overall even on a 5-Link you can clear most of the content because the build is very budget-friendly. If you have the currency to spend though there is definitely room for improvement.

Pros & Cons

Pros

+ Hardcore viable
+ Decent clear speed while maintaining incredible single target damage
+ Decent damage mitigation
+ Playing a pure physical build means you will not be slowed down by monster Resistances in maps

Cons

- Tankier and more budget-friendly compared to meta builds

Playstyle

Offensively, you should Dash Dash into packs of monsters and start using Cyclone Cyclone. An Ancestral Protector Ancestral Protector will help out single target even further by providing an overall multiplier to Attack Speed along with applying Impale stacks itself. Switching into Blood Stance is recommended while fighting bosses and you should stay in Sand stance while clearing.

Defensively, Fortify provides a great amount of damage mitigation. Defensive flasks like Basalt Flask Basalt Flask and Granite Flask Granite Flask should be used for additional physical damage mitigation. A Vaal Molten Shell Vaal Molten Shell is a great Guard skill choice for the build.

For playstyle, when entering a new zone be relatively safe with the first pack of monsters and make sure you have Fortify before you start playing aggressive.

Passive tree

This is the endgame passive skill tree for the build. We focus on picking up all the efficient Impale and Claw nodes along with a decent amount of Life. The Claw nodes affect us while being Unarmed because we are using Rigwald's Curse Rigwald's Curse.

For more information, be sure to check out the passive skill tree page.

Ascendancy, Bandits, and Pantheons

Our Ascendancy, Bandit, and Pantheon Power page goes into detail about all the choices you need to make in these regards.

Gems

We go over all of the gem links this build uses in the end-game on our Gem Link page.

Gear Summary / TL;DR

These items provide a good balance between offense and defense and are enough to deal with the endgame, although there is definitely a room for improvement. Please ensure you read the Gear, Jewels and Flasks page in its entirety.

Leveling

As a reminder, we have several guides to help you level up a character.

The character can be leveled with its signature skill since level 28 and feels great to do so.

Leveling Trees

Here is an early passive skill tree that picks up all the foundational passive nodes needed in the beginning of the character.

Useful Leveling Unique Items

As you begin a new character, there are few unique items that can boost your power exponentially. Tabula Rasa Tabula Rasa allows you to have a 6-Linked skill as early as you get the gems. Wanderlust Wanderlust gives a decent movement speed, which will make your leveling that much more efficient. Goldrim Goldrim provides a lot of elemental resistances, this will let you worry less about gearing when approaching certain Act encounters.

If you are a new player (or if this is your first character for the league), then note that obtaining these items will be very difficult, if not impossible. They are rare drops, which you can otherwise only acquire if you have saved up currency, so do not focus on them too much, and instead simply look for items that match the affix priorities listed in the gearing section above.

Gem Progression

Using Tabula Rasa Tabula Rasa will allow you to have 6-Link gem setups early on, which is why we show such examples below. If you cannot get Tabula Rasa (or another item with a 6-Link), then simply prioritize the first gems in each link provided below.

In order to acquire gems that are not available to your class as a quest reward, simply ask a friend to buy them off vendors for you, or buy them yourself from Sioasa in The Library in Act III Library.

From level 1, you should use the following link.

  1. Ground Slam Ground Slam
  2. Onslaught Support Onslaught Support
  3. Chance to Bleed Support Chance to Bleed Support

At level 4, you should add War Banner War Banner and Ancestral Protector Ancestral Protector for additional damage. Dash Dash helps out by improving your mobility early on. Blood and Sand Blood and Sand should be only used accordingly to the your current needs (stay in Blood stance while fighting tough enemies and switch to Sand stance while clearing). Molten Shell Molten Shell can be used whenever you need the damage mitigation.

By level 8, your Cleave Cleave link should look like this.

  1. Ground Slam Ground Slam
  2. Maim Support Maim Support
  3. Added Fire Damage Support Added Fire Damage Support
  4. Ruthless Support Ruthless Support
  5. Onslaught Support Onslaught Support
  6. Chance to Bleed Support Chance to Bleed Support

At level 16, you should take Flesh and Stone Flesh and Stone, Herald of Purity Herald of Purity and Arctic Armour Arctic Armour gems in order to level them up.

By level 18, your Ground Slam Ground Slam link should look like this.

  1. Ground Slam Ground Slam
  2. Melee Physical Damage Support Melee Physical Damage Support
  3. Maim Support Maim Support
  4. Added Fire Damage Support Added Fire Damage Support
  5. Ruthless Support Ruthless Support
  6. Onslaught Support Onslaught Support

At level 24, youy should also replace War Banner War Banner with Dread Banner Dread Banner.

At level 28, you should replace your Ground Slam Ground Slam setup with the following Cyclone Cyclone link.

  1. Cyclone Cyclone
  2. Impale Support Impale Support
  3. Infused Channelling Support Infused Channelling Support
  4. Melee Physical Damage Support Melee Physical Damage Support
  5. Maim Support Maim Support
  6. Faster Attacks Support Faster Attacks Support

FAQ

How to deal with Mana problems?

A single Mana Leech node on the passive tree like the one near Vitality Void will solve all of your Mana issues.

What Map mods should be avoided?

The build cannot do Physical Reflect and Cannot Leech. Another rough, but manageable mod is No Regeneration.

Conclusion

Get close and personal with enemies and obliterate them while using interesting game mechanics. The Crit Facebreaker Impale Cyclone Champion excels at dealing physical damage and makes great use of the Impale mechanic while maintaining very respectable survivability.

Changelog
  •

Revisited and updated for Delirium 3.10. The build still has insane damage potential with little to no investment.

Loving the build so far. Any thoughts on which passive you’d recommend anointing for?

Hey, it really depends on the mods. It is hard to beat two well rolled Steel Ring Steel Rings for a Facebreaker Facebreaker build.

Hey, both Disemboweling and Assassination are great for that purpose.

Hey, once you’ve picked the Claw nodes along with more Crit like Disemboweling and Dismembering you can start investing in defense. Try having 300hp per Act while leveling (aka 1800hp in Act VI).

Hi, I´m a bit confused – in your endgame passiv skill tree you dont take the Disemboweling Node?!
I like this build a lot, its fun to play but it seems I´m missing something – in another comment you advise which annointmens to take, but talismans cant be annointed and the rigwalds is mandatory for this build?! Please explain – thanks in advance! :)

Hey. This guide is pretty detailed and I think for the most part I’m understanding it well. The only issue I’m having is intelligence requirements for gems. What do you typically do to get your intelligence high enough to use, let’s say Increased Critical Strikes Support? I hope that makes sense. Thanks in advance!

Hey, it is not build-breaking if you cannot max-out your Intelligence gems. Do your best to get as much Int as possible on your Rings and maybe even some on the passive tree, but that’s about all you will need.

Hey, what about Bronn’s Lithe? Seems to give a bit more DPS?
