Guide Format

This build guide is split over multiple pages, both to prevent it from getting too long, as well as to help you better find the information you are looking for. In addition to the current page, which presents general information about the build and also contains a Leveling and FAQ section, we have the following pages:

Introduction

The Dark Pact Dark Pact Hierophant is a Totem build that can be started on a budget and excels at dealing tons of Chaos damage. The build is efficient at both clearing and dealing single target damage. For defense, it utilizes a decent Life pool along with the Mind over Matter keystone notable. For offense, we focus on picking up all the decent Totem, Spell Damage and Spell Critical nodes on the passive tree.

When it comes to ascendancy choices, no one can outmatch the Hierophant when it comes to Spell-based Totem builds. This ascendancy class also allows you to build an immense Mana pool and provides additional defense via the Divine Guidance and Sanctuary of Thought.

Build Summary

There are a few unique items that boost the build’s power tremendously. Soul Mantle Soul Mantle will allow you to run your Dark Pact Dark Pact on a 7-Link essentially. To counter the curses you are inflicted with, you should use two Kikazaru Kikazaru rings. Self-Flagellation will provide a great amount of damage at basically no cost.

Pros & Cons

Pros

+ Hardcore viable
+ Good balance between offense and defense
+ Good value for the currency spent on gearing

Cons

- Totem playstyle might not be for everyone

Playstyle

Offensively, placing a set of totems will be enough to clear nearby packs of monsters. Using Flame Dash Flame Dash will ensure you have good uptime on the Arcane Surge buff, which will provide a good amount of damage in the long run. Having decent uptime on your Diamond flask will also improve your damage potential by a great deal.

Defensively, as in every other Totem build, good positioning is key. The build achieves a very respectable effective Life pool when you combine your Life, Mind over Matter, and Energy Shield provided via nodes like Arcane Will and Sanctuary of Thought.

For playstyle, having all your totems up and dodging lethal game mechanics is what you should be doing most of the time. In order to deal maximum damage you should replace your Totems even when they are alive. This way you will be cursed via the Soul Mantle Soul Mantle and deal additional damage because of the Self-Flagellation unique Jewel.

Passive tree

This is the endgame passive skill tree for the build. For main keystone notables, we pick Ancestral Bond and Mind over Matter. Besides that, we pick all the efficient Totem, Spell Critical, Mana and Life nodes.

For more information, be sure to check out the Passive Skill Tree page.

Ascendancy, Bandits, and Pantheons

Our Ascendancy, Bandit, and Pantheon Power page goes into detail about all the choices you need to make in these regards.

Gems

We go over all of the gem links this build uses in the end-game on our Gem Link page.

Gear Summary / TL;DR

These items provide a good balance between offense and defense and are enough to deal with the endgame, although there is definitely a room for improvement. Please ensure you read the Gear, Jewels and Flasks page in its entirety.

Our recommendation:

Item Slot Item Name
Head Rare Helmet
Amulet Rare Amulet
Chest Soul Mantle Soul Mantle
Gloves Rare Gloves
Boots Rare Boots
Belt Rare Stygian Vise Stygian Vise
Rings 2x Kikazaru Kikazaru
Weapon Apep's Rage Apep's Rage
Shield Rare Shield

Leveling

As a reminder, we have several guides to help you level up a character.

You can start leveling as a Totem build as soon as you have Ancestral Bond and proper gem links (preferably 4-link). Even without leveling unique items, the build is pretty easy and straightforward to level and you should not have any issues.

Leveling Trees

This is the early passive skill tree for the build.

Once you pick Ancestral Bond and Mind over Matter, you should start investing into nodes like Primal Manifestation and Critical Strike nodes such as Annihilation and Arcane Potency. At this point you should have great effective Life pool and you are ready to head to the Shadow starting area.

Useful Leveling Unique Items

As you begin a new character, there are few unique items that can boost your power exponentially. Tabula Rasa Tabula Rasa allows you to have a 6-Linked skill as early as you get the gems. Wanderlust Wanderlust gives a decent movement speed, which will make your leveling that much more efficient. Goldrim Goldrim provides a lot of elemental resistances, this will let you worry less about gearing when approaching certain Act encounters. Two Axiom Perpetuum Axiom Perpetuum can boost your damage early on by a great deal.

If you are a new player (or if this is your first character for the league), then note that obtaining these items will be very difficult, if not impossible. They are rare drops, which you can otherwise only acquire if you have saved up currency, so do not focus on them too much, and instead simply look for items that match the affix priorities listed in the gearing section above.

Gem Progression

Using Tabula Rasa Tabula Rasa will allow you to have 6-Link gem setups early on, which is why we show such examples below. If you cannot get Tabula Rasa (or another item with a 6-Link), then simply prioritize the first gems in each link provided below.

In order to acquire gems that are not available to your class as a quest reward, simply ask a friend to buy them off vendors for you, or buy them yourself from Sioasa in The Library in Act III Library.

From level 1, you should use the following link.

  1. Freezing Pulse Freezing Pulse
  2. Onslaught Support Onslaught Support
  3. Arcane Surge Support Arcane Surge Support

At level 10, you are able to add Flame Dash Flame Dash, which will help with your mobility.

By level 18 your Freezing Pulse Freezing Pulse link should look like this:

  1. Freezing Pulse Freezing Pulse
  2. Onslaught Support Onslaught Support
  3. Controlled Destruction Support Controlled Destruction Support
  4. Added Cold Damage Support Added Cold Damage Support
  5. Arcane Surge Support Arcane Surge Support
  6. Faster Casting Support Faster Casting Support

At level 28, you can finally drop your Freezing Pulse Freezing Pulse link and start using your signature skill Dark Pact Dark Pact. At this point you should have Ancestral Bond.

  1. Dark Pact Dark Pact
  2. Spell Totem Support Spell Totem Support
  3. Void Manipulation Support Void Manipulation Support
  4. Controlled Destruction Support Controlled Destruction Support
  5. Faster Casting Support Faster Casting Support

By level 38, your Dark Pact Dark Pact should look like this.

  1. Dark Pact Dark Pact
  2. Spell Totem Support Spell Totem Support
  3. Void Manipulation Support Void Manipulation Support
  4. Controlled Destruction Support Controlled Destruction Support
  5. Faster Casting Support Faster Casting Support
  6. Multiple Totems Support Multiple Totems Support

Note: You can also swap the last two support gems with Increased Area of Effect Support Increased Area of Effect Support andConcentrated Effect Support Concentrated Effect Support based on personal preference.

FAQ

What map mods are hard to deal with?

No Regeneration should be skipped. Chain can also be very annoying, depending on the mobs.

Conclusion

The Dark Pact Totem Hierophant excels at dealing great amounts Chaos Damage with its powerful self-destructive Totems.

    Hi,

This looks like a very interesting build, thanks.

I only see 2 gem link setups, is that intentional? I can run a CwDT, golem and shield charge setup but that still leaves a lot of room?

Again thanks for the build, I always enjoy something different :)

Hey, there is definitely a lot of room for improvisation when it comes to gem setups in this build, use whatever suits you best as long as you have the mandatory gems in.

Thanks, would a Despair aura with Tukohama’s Fortress work, since it removes the mana reserved by the aura? Or doesnt it work that way :)

Despair Despair is still considered a Curse, even when supported by Blasphemy Support Blasphemy Support. You will still reserve your Life.

I’ve picked up an Eldritch Knowledge jewel, if I place it in the top jewel socket it gives another 25% chaos damage, is it worthwhile or am I missing out too much compared to a regular jewel with the right affixes?

I’d say Eldritch Knowledge Eldritch Knowledge is worse compared to a 2 or 3 stat regular rare Jewel.

Awesome to hear it, it is always fun to try out new playstyles, like trapper, summoner, melee, totems etc.

    Strong build mate, as soon as you can equip Soul Mantle it transforms to a beast, 2 gear suggestions I have found to fit the build very well so far;

Shaper’s prefix for the shield “+1 to maximum number of Summoned Totems” and “Divinarius” unigue dagger.

Great build. I’m using scion build – https://poeplanner.com/ABIDARUAEhABAIcIZ5M6vScYPBhW-ehBh7c-_gryRTrhpldN4_6P2L01krXybqpkhAag-b2DzDwtg1_GrhDM_od7IPiTjEbE9nKprKpZ81Wpl7QaOJBVcg9mnlorWOXDE6PyKhP60hZv42odFPemjmS2-gthr2xo8vAfogAEs8BmPAXvfEVHMtHr7oUymuBFnVNSfIOnlF5d0f0RLSycBUJBltD1vOpqQwj0rrNMs5eVUlM9X9Af7-sEB-vkXyqD21XGHwI2xYPzTq6xNq4SsNg7KKLZyBT1b2qMFr8mlWHiVUuMNonTcFIqC13ylG9mVA5IEZYHHpUu8NWP-uv1wwm5k_IdSVFYF6I-PEt4x7FbpjIDBKlI0ugAAAAAAA==

now level 91, only 3 totems – but better life regen.

Want to compare “clear” effiency – i will reach same levels and compare damage – 3 totems vs 4(5) totems vs survivalability.

Totem build are “soft” – place totems and find safe place to stay :)

Nice one, do your thing. You’ve got the Guardian clicked but I suppose you actually got Hierophant instead. Scion works well for the general idea of the build too. Have fun and keep rocking!
