Golemancer Elementalist Build Guide (PoE Blight 3.8)

Vvckd

17

Introduction

The Golemancer is a bit different from other summoner builds, simply because you will not really worry about your minions dying. This allows you to focus on weakening enemies’ elemental resistances and taking care of your own survivability. The Elementalist is a great ascendancy choice when it comes to this type of build; it allows you to have two additional maximum Golems, while also making them immune to elemental damage.

Overall, the build can be played as Life-based, Low Life, or Hybrid. For this particular guide we will be looking at the Life/Hybrid version since it is cheaper, and one major drawback of Golemancer Elementalist is that it requires some initial currency investment, so we try to minimise this.

Build Summary

In order for the build to work, you will mainly use specific unique jewels that are not very cheap. The Anima Stone The Anima Stone allows you to bump up your maximum number of Golems summoned even further; it is the most expensive jewel you will need, it is acquired by vendoring Primordial Might Primordial Might, Primordial Harmony Primordial Harmony, and Primordial Eminence Primordial Eminence. The second jewel you need is Primordial Might; it will drastically change the AI of your Golems, making them much more aggressive and easy to rely on. After you have the Anima Stone and Primordial Might socketed, you should fill up all of your remaining jewel sockets with Primordial Harmony jewels. These unique jewels are the “bread and butter” of the build. After that you can get some cheap unique items like Clayshaper Clayshaper and Victario's Charity Victario's Charity, which can be even used in the endgame.

Even though the required unique jewels are rare, they are not used by many people and the cost drops over the course of a league.

Pros & Cons

Pros

+ Hardcore viable
+ Great damage potential
+ Decent survivability

Cons

- Requires initial currency investment

Playstyle

Offensively, your main goal is to lower enemies’ resistances by making use of the Elemental Equilibrium passive keystone and applying a Curse with your skill at the same time; this will result in a huge resistance penalty, which will allow your Golems to destroy foes. Re-summoning a Golem every so often will ensure you have the Primordial Might Primordial Might buff up. Raise Spectre Raise Spectre should be used for additional single target damage. Flesh Offering Flesh Offering can increase your minions’ speed by a good amount.

Defensively, keeping your distance and dodging lethal game mechanics with Shield Charge Shield Charge should be easy. The character easily achieves over 7K effective life pool, which will allow you to survive in most sticky situations.

For playstyle, you can make great use of Winter Orb Winter Orb as a utility skill; charging it up just for a second will be enough to trigger Elemental Equilibrium and your Curse On Hit Support Curse On Hit Support setup. When encountering tough single targets, just make sure to keep those debuffs up and let your Golems and Spectres do the rest.

Ascendancy, Passive tree, Bandits and Pantheons

Ascendancy (Witch – Elementalist)

  1. Liege of the Primordial
  2. Elemancer
  3. Paragon of Calamity
  4. Shaper of Desolation

Liege of the Primordial increases you maximum number of summoned Golems by one; it also makes them immune to elemental damage, which immensely boosts their toughness.

Elemancer allows you to summon one additional Golem and provides a good amount of increased Golem damage.

Paragon of Calamity provides good defensive mechanic with the damage taken reduction to certain elements.

Shaper of Desolation allows you to efficiently make use of Elemental Ailments.

Passive tree

With this endgame passive skill tree we are able to reach 8 jewel sockets, which is more than enough for you to stack the appropriate unique jewels.

Bandits

For this particular build, we choose to kill all bandits, since helping any of them does not outweigh the benefits of two passive skill points.

Pantheons

Major: Soul of Lunaris should be chosen in order to avoid chaining projectiles, which can be fatal in every summoner build.

Minor: Here it is up to personal preference. Poison immunity via Shakari is always handy. Use Ralakesh when running labyrinths. Other gods can be used too whenever you feel like they can be useful.

Pantheon powers can be upgraded by using Divine Vessel in the Map Device while you are activating the particular Map that contains the boss you need. Once you have killed the boss and captured his soul, you need to deliver the vessel to Sin in Oriath.

Gems

Summon Flame Golem Summon Flame Golem is your signature skill, which should ideally be used in a 6-Link. For mobility, use Shield Charge Shield Charge. Raise Spectre Raise Spectres will augment your single target damage output. Winter Orb Winter Orb is used as an utility gem. Other gems like Animate Guardian Animate Guardian, Vaal Discipline Vaal Discipline, Flesh Offering Flesh Offering, Phase Run Phase Run, Desecrate Desecrate, and Convocation Convocation can be used.

For all the gem links we provide below, keep in mind that we list the gems in order of priority (starting from the top left, going to the right on each row of the links), meaning that if you lack the required number of sockets to fit all the gems, the first ones to drop are the ones at the bottom (with the bottom right being the last). Also note that in-game, as long as the sockets are linked, it makes no difference at all what order the gems are placed in.

Flame Golem (6-Link)

Summon Flame Golem Summon Flame Golem is a ranged spell-based Golem that has two main skills, one that imitates Incinerate Incinerate and a barrage of fire projectiles; we aim to scale the second ability since it deals great amount of damage. We recommend one link that works great for both clearing and single target.

  1. Summon Flame Golem Summon Flame Golem
  2. Greater Multiple Projectiles Support Greater Multiple Projectiles Support
  3. Spell Echo Support Spell Echo Support
  4. Controlled Destruction Support Controlled Destruction Support
  5. Minion Damage Support Minion Damage Support
  6. Empower Support Empower Support

Raise Spectre (4-Link)

Raise Spectre Raise Spectres are used for the additional single target damage they provide. In this build we use Tuhohama’s Vanguards as Spectres, which can be found in The Mud Flats, Act VI. The Raise Spectre gem should ideally be socketed in a well rolled Elder-based helmet for maximum efficiency.

  1. Raise Spectre Raise Spectre
  2. Minion Life Support Minion Life Support
  3. Elemental Focus Support Elemental Focus Support
  4. Minion and Totem Elemental Resistance Support Minion and Totem Elemental Resistance Support

Shield Charge (3-Link)

Shield Charge Shield Charge will allow you to reposition quickly, it will also give you the Fortify effect when you hit an enemy.

  1. Shield Charge Shield Charge
  2. Faster Attacks Support Faster Attacks Support
  3. Fortify Support Fortify Support

Winter Orb (4-Link)

Winter Orb Winter Orb will allow you to easily trigger Elemental Equilibrium and Curse enemies.

  1. Winter Orb Winter Orb
  2. Curse On Hit Support Curse On Hit Support
  3. Flammability Flammability
  4. Elemental Weakness Elemental Weakness

Other Gems

Vaal Discipline Vaal Discipline and Arctic Armour Arctic Armour can be used for additional defence. Desecrate Desecrate will help out with Raising Spectres and using Flesh Offering Flesh Offering. Animate Guardian Animate Guardian can be used as a mini aura bot. Convocation Convocation will allow you to call your minions in sticky situations. Steelskin Steelskin can be used for additional damage mitigation.

Gearing

Capping your elemental resistances is essential and it should always be your top priority in any build; it should be the first thing you do when gearing up a character. Obtaining a 6-link, while very powerful and certainly recommended, can potentially be very expensive (requiring an average of 1500 Orbs of Fusing, obviously depending on your luck); as such, this should not really be a goal for you while gearing up, and you should instead settle for a 5-link until you have enough resources. All you need in order to get started is the unique jewels and a Clayshaper Clayshaper. A simple Tabula Rasa Tabula Rasa can carry you a long way.

Helmet

A well rolled Elder-based helmet can make your Raise Spectre Raise Spectre very strong. Bone Helmet Bone Helmet is a great choice when it comes to an item base. The Rare Affix Priority is:

  1. +#% total Elemental Resistances (until capped)
  2. +# to maximum life (90)
  3. Socketed Gems are Supported by Level # Minion Damage
  4. Socketed Gems are Supported by Level # Minion Life
  5. Socketed Gems are Supported by Level # Immolate

Body Armour

You can use Tabula Rasa Tabula Rasa early on. Skin of the Loyal Skin of the Loyal is a great endgame choice. Any well rolled rare Body Armour also works. The Rare Affix Priority is:

  1. +#% total Elemental Resistances (until capped)
  2. +# to maximum life (90)
  3. +1 to maximum number of Spectres (crafted via crafting bench)
  4. % increased maximum life (Pristine Fossil Pristine Fossil, Elder Prefix)
  5. Energy Shield (at least 200)

Gloves

Well rolled rare gloves are best in slot. The Rare Affix Priority is:

  1. +#% total Elemental Resistances (until capped)
  2. +# to maximum life (70)
  3. # to Dexterity; Strength

Boots

Look for decent rare boots; here you should look for “+1 to maximum number of Spectres” (Bound Fossil). For labyrinth enchants, you should look for Life and Mana Regeneration, Movement speed or anything else you prefer. The Rare Affix Priority is:

  1. +#% total Elemental Resistances (until capped)
  2. +# to maximum life (70)
  3. +1 to maximum number of Spectres (Bound Fossil)
  4. % increased Movement Speed (at least 20%)

Belt

A well rolled Crystal Belt Crystal Belt or Leather Belt Leather Belt will increase your effective life pool by a respectable amount. The Rare Affix Priority is:

  1. +#% total Elemental Resistances (until capped)
  2. +# to maximum life (90)
  3. Energy Shield (at least 40)
  4. # to Strength

Amulet

A well rolled Amulet is probably one of the best options. The Primordial Chain The Primordial Chain is a Golem-themed amulet, but does not work well with this particular build since you will not be able to summon Spectres, overall it will be a damage decrease. Solstice Vigil Solstice Vigil allows you to run Temporal Chains Temporal Chains on Blasphemy Support Blasphemy Support. The Rare Affix Priority is:

  1. +#% total Elemental Resistances (until capped)
  2. +# to maximum life (50)
  3. Flat and % Energy Shield
  4. # to Dexterity; Strength

Rings

There are no particularly powerful unique rings that the build can use. Considering you will probably be “socket-starved” it might be a good idea to have at least one Unset Ring Unset Ring. The Rare Affix Priority is:

  1. +#% total Elemental Resistances (until capped)
  2. +# to maximum life (50)
  3. # to Dexterity; Strength

Weapon

For the weapon slot, we must use Clayshaper Clayshaper. There is no better weapon for the Golemancer Elementalist.

Shield

Victario's Charity Victario's Charity is a great unique shield that will allow you to generate Power and Frenzy charges for your minions. Rathpith Globe Rathpith Globe can be used for the additional Chance to Block spell damage. Any decent rare shield will also do the work. The Rare Affix Priority is:

  1. +#% total Elemental Resistances (until capped)
  2. +# to maximum life (80)
  3. % Chance to Block Spell Damage (Shaper Suffix)
  4. +1 % to all maximum Resistances (Shaper Prefix)
  5. Energy Shield (at least 150-200)

Flasks

Half-instant Divine Life flask should be used, preferably with Bleed removal Suffix. Quicksilver will allow you to move around quickly. Silver flask will also improve your overall speed. Based on personal preference, you can run any utility flask you want. We recommend having at least Basalt. Rumi's Concoction Rumi's Concoction provides additional Block Chance to spells and attacks. Taste of Hate Taste of Hate can improve your physical damage mitigation even further, but can be very expensive and you should not focus on it too much. Make sure you have Curse and Freeze immunity rolled on your utility flasks.

Jewels

Here is a list of the unique jewels you will need for the build.

Note: These are the only jewels you should be using; no Regular or Abyssal jewels should be used.

Leveling

As a reminder, we have several guides to help you level up a character.

You can start using Golems at level 34, until then you can use any leveling skill you prefer. We recommend Storm Brand Storm Brand.

Leveling Trees

This early passive skill tree, aim to pick up Elemental Equilibrium and the other jewel sockets first.

Useful Leveling Unique Items

As you begin a new character, there are few unique items that can boost your power exponentially. Tabula Rasa Tabula Rasa allows you to have a 6-Linked skill as early as you get the gems. Wanderlust Wanderlust gives a decent movement speed, which will make your leveling that much more efficient. Goldrim Goldrim provides a lot of elemental resistances, this will let you worry less about gearing when approaching certain Act encounters. You should equip Clayshaper Clayshaper at level 41.

If you are a new player (or if this is your first character for the league), then note that obtaining these items will be very difficult, if not impossible. They are rare drops, which you can otherwise only acquire if you have saved up currency, so do not focus on them too much, and instead simply look for items that match the affix priorities listed in the gearing section above.

Gem Progression

Using Tabula Rasa Tabula Rasa will allow you to have 6-Link gem setups early on, which is why we show such examples below. If you cannot get Tabula Rasa (or another item with a 6-Link), then simply prioritize the first gems in each link provided below.

In order to acquire gems that are not available to your class as a quest reward, simply ask a friend to buy them off vendors for you, or buy them yourself from Sioasa in The Library in Act III Library.

From level 1, you should use the following link.

  1. Freezing Pulse Freezing Pulse
  2. Onslaught Support Onslaught Support
  3. Arcane Surge Support Arcane Surge Support

At level 4, you can add Frost Bomb Frost Bomb for additional single target damage. War Banner War Banner can be picked for the Adrenaline buff it provides for a short duration when dropped.

At level 10, you should add Flame Dash Flame Dash for additional mobility.

At level 12, you should replace your Freezing Pulse Freezing Pulse with Storm Brand Storm Brand.

  1. Storm Brand Storm Brand
  2. Onslaught Support Onslaught Support
  3. Added Lightning Damage Support Added Lightning Damage Support

At level 16, you can add Arctic Armour Arctic Armour for additional defense.

By level 18, your Storm Brand Storm Brand link should look like this.

  1. Storm Brand Storm Brand
  2. Onslaught Support Onslaught Support
  3. Controlled Destruction Support Controlled Destruction Support
  4. Concentrated Effect Support Concentrated Effect Support
  5. Added Lightning Damage Support Added Lightning Damage Support
  6. Elemental Focus Support Elemental Focus Support

At level 24, you can add Discipline Discipline for additional survivability.

At level 28, you should add the following Lightning Spire Trap Lightning Spire Trap link, which will greatly augment you single target damage output.

  1. Lightning Spire Trap Lightning Spire Trap
  2. Controlled Destruction Support Controlled Destruction Support
  3. Concentrated Effect Support Concentrated Effect Support
  4. Elemental Focus Support Elemental Focus Support

Finally, at level 34, you can transition to your signature skill Summon Flame Golem Summon Flame Golem. This replaces your Storm Brand Storm Brand link.

  1. Summon Flame Golem Summon Flame Golem
  2. Greater Multiple Projectiles Support Greater Multiple Projectiles Support
  3. Spell Echo Support Spell Echo Support
  4. Controlled Destruction Support Controlled Destruction Support
  5. Minion Damage Support Minion Damage Support
  6. Elemental Focus Support Elemental Focus Support

FAQ

Why do you choose Elementalist over Necromancer, Occultist or any other ascendancy class?

The Elementalist’s two Golem-related ascendancy nodes are just too good to pass on. They basically allow you to have 2 additional Golems, which is an insane damage boost and the elemental damage immunity basically makes them immortal.

What map mods should we avoid?

You will probably have some problems with No Regeneration maps, but they are still doable. This is one of the few builds that can do all map mods.

Conclusion

With the Golemancer Elementalist you have the potential to take down endgame bosses and clear maps smoothly. The build requires some initial currency investment and decent game knowledge in order to properly setup items and gems, this is why we do not recommend the Golemancer Elementalist to newer players.

Appreciate your good work with the guides Vvckd. Keep on rolling…

    There’s just one thing I wanna know…
Is it possible for you to recommend for which of the gems quality is important and for which not so much. It’s a question of currency so it would be really interesting for example if you can say if spell echo should be at 20% or not…. does incresed spell damage count towards flame golem? that is what the quality does on that gem…. so this is my point… would be awesome.

    Hey!

I’ll let Vvckd answer the specific question, but I do want to add that we are looking at ways to improve this aspect of our build guides, possibly by making one or more separate guides that deal with gem quality and how to decide what to upgrade. Thank you for the kind words!

Thanks for the kind feedback. Most of the benefits you gain from gem’s increased quality are worth it; when it comes to this build’s gems specifically, you should aim to have Greater Multiple Projectiles Support Greater Multiple Projectiles Support with 20% quality. Besides that, the other support gems provide additional damage which is good, but you will be alright without it and should not worry too much. I’d say after the GMP aim to improve your Golem’s quality and the Minion Damage Support Minion Damage Support quality first.

Greetings :) I am new to PoE and it is my first Char. I want to ask how many golems I can create overall? (I cannot find any information and I am sorry if I read over.)

    Hey Chaosgutter,

Depending on your itemization you can easily reach more than 8 maximum summoned golems. This includes 1 from the ascendancy, 2 from the The Anima Stone The Anima Stone, two from Clayshaper Clayshaper if you choose to dual wield them and 3 from the The Primordial Chain The Primordial Chain, which is not mandatory and can be skipped.

Thanks. Was scratching my head fo a while there.

What would you guys think about using Facebreaker Facebreaker with this build?

I’m not really sure whats meant by “unarmed attacks” Does it mean that you may not have a weapon equipped? Or does it still work if you do, but the attack comes from another source?

Hell it may even still be worth dropping the extra golem for all that damage.

Been playing with this build a good bit, and I took an 11th jewel slot so that i could socket Glorious Vanity Glorious Vanity (Doryani) so that i can grab the Corrupted Soul Keystone. It adds a very nice layer of protection that makes one feel remarkably safe.

I’m sorry, this is probably a stupid question but i don’t completely understand. It looks like you are using only 1 type of golem, wouldn’t the harmony jewel only add essentially 20 minion damage to your golems that way? If so why is it so crucial to stack up those gems? I really want to try infernal legion carrion golems but can’t think of how to make it work, it feels like either i have a lot of carrion golems but then Harmony does very little, or i have 5 or so different golems so harmony is effective but then i only get a couple of carrion golems to do their thing.

Hey, thanks for commenting. The build is a golemancer that uses different type of golems indeed, it is built around the idea of using Summon Flame Golem Summon Flame Golems, and this is why Primordial Harmony Primordial Harmony‘s Cooldown Recovery is super efficient. When it comes to Infernal Legion Carrion Golems, you will mainly need to stack as much Minion Life as possible, you will not even need that many golems any ways, since a target can only be affected by 1 Infernal Legion at a time. At this point jewel-stacking becomes useless, you should mainly focus on your own surivability and Minion Life for offense.

Hi, I decide to try this build in the new league. It seems like cool idea to have more relaxed build, I mean my golems do all the work for me. But as it turn out is exactly the opposite. I die all the time, every mob even in white maps can one shot me. And if the map have syndicate members in, it is game over. There is no way I can run from them, they will always follow and kill me. First week in last league with my cyclone slayer I was able to semi afk red maps. It was so easy to play with initial investment of 100 chaos. This build however I spend like 300 chaos so far and it is so hard to play. I know it is league start, and gear isn’t great. But I am resistance capped (even +45 chaos resistence) and 5.5k effective hp – it is a lot more than my cyclone have in first week. I don’t see how I will progress. I have golems (a lot), they do damage (a lot) but if something hit me I am dead. Can someone explain me where the defense of this build come from? I don’t see a cast on damage gem setup for defense (which is something every build I try so far have) or any other significant defense mechanics except shield charging like mad man all the time. I am a bit lost…
