Build Introduction

Here we are going to take a look at a very simple, yet effective build. Our main skill will be Holy Flame Totem Holy Flame Totem. As always, this build might not suit everyone’s taste for gameplay, as it mainly focuses on totems. However, totem builds give us huge survivability, as we will be able to keep moving while they cast and avoid danger this way. The clear speed of this build is very good and it is fairly cheap, which makes it an amazing league starter. The build can also clear almost all of the game’s content without spending too much currency in it.

Pros & Cons

Pros

+ Great clear speed
+ Cheap items to start / great league starter
+ Good survivability
+ Good boss killer

Cons

- Totem gameplay might not be suitable for everyone
- Elemental Reflect maps will be difficult

Playstyle

The playstyle of the build is relatively simple. We will deploy our Holy Flame Totem Holy Flame Totem‘s and they will clear everything for us; while this is happening we will try to avoid danger by running away from it or using Flame Dash Flame Dash if needed. For tougher fights and boss fights we will also be using Flammability Flammability. We will also be using Anger Anger to further increase the damage of our totems.

Passive tree

Early Game

This build will be tough to level up as it will have low damage at the beginning – start with the following early game passive tree

Mid Game

After that, we will just pick more Critical Strike and Health. Here is the mid game passive tree

End Game Passive Tree

Now that most of the stuff is out of the way, we will need to pick our Power charges, Mind over Matter, and some extra mana and damage. This is the end game passive tree

Ascendancy – Hierophant

Normal Lab – Pursuit of Faith

Pursuit of Faith increases our Cast Speed, our Damage, and gives us one additional Totem we can place: it is great to start with.

Cruel Lab – Ritual of Awakening

Ritual of Awakening is great to pick second, as it will give us a nice Life and Mana regeneration which will make our leveling much smoother.

Merciless Lab – Conviction of Power

Conviction of Power is one of our most important nodes as it is our main generator of Power Charges. We will be able to generate 8 power charges in total, which makes Conviction of Power mandatory.

Eternal Lab – Divine Guidance

Divine Guidance will give us some extra defense and even more mana for our Mind over Matter.

Gem Links

For all the gem links we provide below, keep in mind that we list the gems in order of priority, meaning that if you lack the required number of sockets to fit all the gems, the first ones to drop are the ones at the bottom. Also note that in-game, as long as the sockets are linked, it makes no difference at all what order the gems are placed in.

Holy Flame Totem (6-Link)

  1. Holy Flame Totem Holy Flame Totem
  2. Added Fire Damage Support Added Fire Damage Support
  3. Fire Penetration Support Fire Penetration Support
  4. Infused Channelling Support Infused Channelling Support

Herald of Ash/ Clarity (3-link)

  3. Enlighten Support Enlighten Support

Note: The reason we tagged this as a 3-link is because ideally you will link your Herald of Ash & Clarity with Enlighten Support Enlighten Support, which will give us more mana for Mind over Matter.

Flammability (3-link)

  1. Flammability Flammability
  2. Faster Casting Support Faster Casting Support
  3. Increased Area of Effect Support Increased Area of Effect Support

Immortal Call (3-link)

Other Gems

These gems do not need to be linked.

Bandits & Pantheon

Bandits

Help Alira.

Pantheon

Major God

For a major god, the best one is Soul of Lunaris for the extra damage reduction plus movement speed.

Minor God

For a minor god, the best one is Soul of Garukhan for the bonus evasion and movement speed.

Gear / Items

Weapon

The best weapons for this build are 2x Void Battery Void Batterys, which might prove to be the most expensive part of the build. Do not worry about that, as we can always use 2x Divinarius Divinarius or 2x Doryani's Catalyst Doryani's Catalyst until we get our hands on Void Battery Void Battery.

Helmet

For Helmet, the best in slot is a Rare helmet with the following stats:

  1. + % total Resistances (until capped)
  2. + % to maximum Life
  3. + % to maximum Mana
  4. + % increased maximum Life

Note: You can get an Uber Lab enchantment that increases the damage of Holy Flame Totem Holy Flame Totem by 40%.

Body Armour

The best Body Armour for this build is Infernal Mantle Infernal Mantle for the extra damage, but there are other good options like Loreweave Loreweave for defenses instead. However, we recommend just starting out with a Rare 6-linked Body armour with the following stats:

  1. + % total Resistances (until capped)
  2. + % to maximum Life
  3. + % increased maximum Life

Gloves

For gloves, the best in slot are Rare gloves with the following stats:

  1. + % total Resistances (until capped)
  2. + % to maximum Life
  3. + % to maximum Mana

Belt

A Rare belt (ideally a Stygian Vise Stygian Vise) is the best option with:

  1. + % total Resistances (until capped)
  2. + % to maximum Life
  3. + % increased Fire Damage

Boots

You can use just a regular Rare boots with the following stats:

  1. + % total Resistances (until capped)
  2. + % to maximum Life
  3. + % to maximum Mana
  4. + % Movement speed increase

Note: The recommended enchant from the Lab here is “Damage Penetrates 10% of Enemy Elemental Resistances if you haven’t Killed Recently”.

Rings

For rings, a mandatory ring is Essence Worm Essence Worm for our Anger Anger; as for the other ring, a Rare Opal Ring Opal Ring is the best option. Stats to look for on the ring are:

  1. + % total Resistances (until capped)
  2. + % to maximum Life
  3. + % increased Fire Damage
  4. + % to maximum Mana

Amulet

You can use a Rare Amulet with the following stats:

  1. + % total Resistances (until capped)
  2. + % to maximum Life
  3. + % to maximum Mana
  4. + % increased Fire Damage
  5. + % Increased Spell Damage

Jewels

We are going to prioritize Abyssal Jewels over regular ones, and make sure they have the following stats:

  1. + % increased Fire Damage
  2. + % increased Totem Damage
  3. + % increased Damage

Note: Spire of Stone Spire of Stone is always great to have in a totem build. We strongly recommend using it.

Note #2: It is good to have Watcher's Eye Watcher's Eye with one of the following affixes, but keep in mind that these Watcher's Eye Watcher's Eyes will be quite expensive and it is not a mandatory item:

  • (25-40)% of Physical Damage Converted to Fire Damage while affected by Anger
  • Gain (15-25)% of Physical Damage as Extra Fire Damage while affected by Anger
  • (6-10)% of Damage taken from Mana before Life while affected by Clarity
  • (40-60)% increased Fire Damage while affected by Anger
  • (30-50)% to Critical Strike Multiplier while affected by Anger
  • Damage Penetrates (10-15)% Fire Resistance while affected by Anger

Flasks

For Unique flasks, we would recommend Atziri's Promise Atziri's Promise for the extra damage.

Other than that, go for one Silver Flask Silver Flask ideally with movement speed increase & duration increase and two instant recovery Health flasks. Make sure you have Freezing removal (of Heat), Burning removal (Dousing), and Bleeding removal (of Staunching) effects on your flasks. A Diamond Flask Diamond Flask is also great to have.

Be sure to check out our Flask Crafting Guide to learn everything you need to know about how to set up your non-Unique flasks.

Leveling

As a reminder, we have several guides to help you level up a character.

You can start leveling up with Freezing Pulse Freezing Pulse. You obtain your Holy Flame Totem Holy Flame Totem at level 4, but it will not be that useful early. While leveling up you should look for Spell Damage/Life and Resistance on items. Start leveling with Freezing Pulse Freezing Pulse and at level
Link it with Added Lightning Damage Support Added Lightning Damage Support. Use Holy Flame Totem Holy Flame Totem as a damage support . At level 18 start you can also link it with Faster Casting Support Faster Casting Support. Use Clarity Clarity as well. Once you have the Ancestral Bond node picked from your passive tree switch fully to your Holy Flame Totem Holy Flame Totem. Link it with Added Fire Damage Support Added Fire Damage Support & Infused Channelling Support Infused Channelling Support. The damage will be low at this point, but once we obtain our first ascendancy points everything should be much smoother.

At level 50 you can start using 2x Heartbreaker Heartbreaker, as it is pretty cheap and will increase our damage tremendously.

Useful leveling items are:

Conclusion

The Holy Flame Totems Hierophant is one of the best league starters out there. While it is not the strongest build in the game, it performs great in all areas for a cheap cost of items.

It is an Arc Totem build with swapped main gem setup without any adaptation of skill tree.

Holy Flame without Avatar of Fire and Divine Fury is like a necromancer without Death Attunement and Lord of the Dead.

Yes you are correct, it has lot’s of simillarities to the Arc totems. As for Avatar of Fire – actually it should’ve been in the tree seems I missed a point. As for Divine Fury i was heavily considering but I preffered some extra jewel slots ( the damage increase is not that great from Divine Fury), but i will add it as it is the cheaper option instead of jewels.

Thank you for the feedback and sugestions.

    Hey there,

I do not recommend this build for Hardcore play , as it is damage and softcore oriented. The Marauder/Chieftain has better options for Defensive Hardcore Holy Flame totems and here is a link to Wicked’s Chieftain/Holy Flame totems if you want to check it out :) —- > Wckd Holy Flame Totem Build

Ah thanks, I play only hardcore and wanted to try some Holy Flame. Will check your advice.

I considered a bit diferent Passive Tree, but I don’t know if it would be enough to HC run trough n’ trough.

    Good guide,
Still leveling, at 61 now. I want to clarify a few points.
Which jewel slot is the most suitable for Spire of Stone? Is it the one on the left, near Divine Fury?
Secondly, if we give up some jewel slots and try to reach Doom Cast, would it be a terrible idea? Otherwise I will try to anoint my amulet with it.

Hi, Yes it is the one near Divine Fury although we mainly benefit from the ,, totems cannot be stunned mod’‘ so it doesn’t really matter. As for Doom cast we only have 4 jewel slots you will have to give up at least 2 of them to reach it. Anointment definetely sounds like a better idea :). Besides once you get your maximum power charges and other passives from the tree you won’t have to worry about Critical Chance.

Edit : Allocating Disciple of the Forbidden is also a great option
