Molten Strike Juggernaut Build Guide (PoE Blight 3.8)

Introduction

With the recent changes to stack-stick weapons in 3.5 Betrayal many melee skills lost a lot of raw power. Molten Strike Molten Strike remained a very solid choice though. Not only does the skill have incredible single target damage potential, it has some decent clear speed too, thanks to Ancestral Call Support Ancestral Call Support. The Juggernaut ascendancy class can accumulate extreme amounts of damage mitigation, partially because our weapons of choice are Nebuloch Nebuloch, which have great synergy with the Endurance charge stacking we are aiming to achieve. When properly geared, the build can achieve 90% physical damage mitigation and 80% elemental damage mitigation, at the very least. You also get 12% chaos resistance per Endurance charge due to the fact you are combining two Nebuloch maces with the Unrelenting ascendancy node. To mitigate the fire degeneration effect from Nebuloch weapons, the build can achieve over 1500 life regeneration per second.

Build Summary

The Molten Strike Juggernaut can be very expensive when you aim to have best in slot items, although it can also be played on a budget. To mitigate the Nebuloch Nebuloch degeneration effect you will ideally want two Kaom's Way Kaom's Way, which can be couple of Exalted Orb Exalted Orbs each. Loreweave Loreweave is the best in slot chest, simply because the build has capped physical mitigation and your only problem is the elemental damage you might take. The way you scale Molten Strike Molten Strikes damage is by adding additional projectiles. This is achieved by acquiring a Dying Sun Dying Sun and a helmet, which is enchanted with “Molten Strike fire 2 additional projectiles”. Wildfire Wildfire is Molten Strike’s threshold jewel, which is very cheap and will provide the damage you need early on. If you plan to play on a budget, you will probably not have the currency to spend on all the items mentioned above, in that case you should buy a Brutus' Lead Sprinkler Brutus' Lead Sprinkler, this mace will allow you to farm the currency you need for better items.

Pros & Cons

Pros

+ Hardcore viable
+ Extreme damage mitigation
+ Very high single target damage output
+ Great endgame potential

Cons

- Average clear speed
- Cannot run certain map mods
- Can be very expensive

Playstyle

Offensively, the Molten Strike Juggernaut is not afraid to jump into packs of monsters and destroy them. One or two hits with Molten Strike Molten Strike will be enough to kill everything in your reach. Ancestral Call Support Ancestral Call Support will improve your clear speed by a great deal. Ancestral Protector Ancestral Protector and War Banner War Banner can be utilized when encountering tougher enemies. Leap Slam Leap Slam is the build’s mobility skill, which will be used all the time.

Defensively, all the stacked damage mitigation will make you feel invincible, except for the one-shot mechanics everyone has to dodge. The very high maximum resistances combined with all the three utility flasks for additional elemental damage mitigation will keep you safe from incoming elemental damage, while more than 30k armour will take care of the physical hits.

For Playstyle, in every zone you just entered, the first thing you have to do is make sure you reached maximum Endurance charges as soon as possible. Go slow on the first pack of monsters, once you have done that, you can activate Blood Rage Blood Rage and become aggressive. You should be using Leap Slam Leap Slam all the time in order to move around as quickly as possible.

Ascendancy, Passive Tree, Bandits and Pantheons

Asncendancy (Marauder – Juggernaut)

  1. Unflinching
  2. Undeniable
  3. Unbreakable
  4. Unrelenting

Unflinching is the great sustain of Endurance charges which we will rely on. Undeniable will provide a great amount of Attack Speed and Accuracy Rating. The additional damage and Accuracy Rating if you’ve dealt a Critical Strike recently synergizes very well with Elemental Overload. Unbreakable gives additional damage mitigation along with a great amount of life regeneration. Unrelenting makes Endurance charges even more efficient.

Passive Tree

The endgame passive skill tree should look like this. The great thing about the Molten Strike Juggernaut is that he does not require a lot of damage investment when it comes to passive skill tree points. Mainly you will need a few keystone notables. Most important of all are Iron Grip and Point Black, these two keystone notables will improve Molten Strike Molten Strike‘s damage by a great deal. A single point in mana leech will solve all your mana problems. Next thing you should aim for is Avatar of Fire and Elemental Overload. Pick up all the Endurance charges on the way. By level 65, you should have all the important stuff mentioned above and you can start investing into jewel sockets and life nodes.

Note: For leveling skill trees prior to this endgame passive skill tree, please refer to the leveling section down below.

Bandits

Kill all. This is the best endgame choice when it comes to Deal with the Bandits quest in Act II. Helping Oak can also be a viable choice if you struggle with life regeneration and damage early on.

Pantheons

Major: Both Soul of Arakaali and Soul of Solaris are great choices. You can swap between them depending on the content you are doing.
Minor: Since the Molten Strike Juggernaut is a non-Resolute Technique build, immunity to Blind is very useful. When upgraded, Soul of Ralakesh provides exactly that.

Gems

Molten Strike Molten Strike is the build’s main skill, which should ideally be used in a 6-Link. For mobility, use Leap Slam Leap Slam. Anger Anger and Herald of Ash Herald of Ash are offensive buffs that should be active at all times, make sure they are not linked with any support gems since this will only increase their mana reservation without any benefits. Ancestral Protector Ancestral Protector can be used in a utility setup to improve single target damage. War Banner War Banner provides Adrenaline when dropped down, which improves your damage output by a great deal. Blood Rage Blood Rage gives a lot of damage and attack speed.

Molten Strike (6-Link)

Molten Strike Molten Strike is your signature skill. When you strike an enemy in melee range, a dozen of molten orbs drop on the ground and deal area of effect damage. You mainly scale Molten Strike’s damage by investing into projectile, elemental and area damage. The skill has great synergy with Ancestral Call Support Ancestral Call Support, which can even be used in a single target setup. Here is an example of a universal gem link, which works well for both clearing and single target.

  1. Molten Strike Molten Strike
  2. Ancestral Call Support Ancestral Call Support
  3. Elemental Damage with Attacks Support Elemental Damage with Attacks Support
  4. Elemental Focus Support Elemental Focus Support
  5. Concentrated Effect Support Concentrated Effect Support
  6. Endurance Charge on Melee Stun Support Endurance Charge on Melee Stun Support

Leap Slap (4-Link)

Leap Slam Leap Slam is the best choice when it comes to mobility skills. With the following link you will not worry about mana and you will get free Fortify effect when you land on enemies.

  1. Leap Slam Leap Slam
  2. Blood Magic Support Blood Magic Support
  3. Faster Attacks Support Faster Attacks Support
  4. Fortify Support Fortify Support

Ancestral Protector (3-Link)

Ancestral Protector Ancestral Protector is used in order to multiply your current attack speed, while also reducing enemies’ fire resistances. This totem also has the ability to Cull bosses via Culling Strike Support Culling Strike Support.

  1. Ancestral Protector Ancestral Protector
  2. Combustion Support Combustion Support
  3. Culling Strike Support Culling Strike Support

Other Gems

Anger Anger and Herald of Ash Herald of Ash bring a lot of damage to the build. Blood Rage Blood Rage can be used in order to improve the attack speed and generate Frenzy charges. War Banner War Banner is used mainly for the Adrenaline buff it provides when dropped on the ground. Enduring Cry Enduring Cry can be useful when you need to generate Endurance charges from a distance. Steelskin provides an additional layer of defence if used properly.

Gearing

Capping your elemental resistances is essential and it should always be your top priority in any build; it should be the first thing you do when gearing up a character. Obtaining a 6-link, while very powerful and certainly recommended, can potentially be very expensive (requiring an average of 1500 Orbs of Fusing, obviously depending on your luck); as such, this should not really be a goal for you while gearing up, and you should instead settle for a 5-link until you have enough resources. The Nebuloch Nebuloch maces is the bread and butter of the build, this is what you should invest first. You will need at least one Kaom's Way Kaom's Way in order to counter the degeneration effect. Kaom's Roots Kaom's Roots will provide a lot of flat life, along with the Stun and Freeze immunity. Loreweave Loreweave with 78% maximum resistances is the next step you should make. Beyond that you should focus on additional projectiles via the helmet enchant and Dying Sun Dying Sun for additional damage.

Helmet

A rare armour-based helmet rolled with Pristine and Scorched fossils will be best in slot for the build. For labyrinth enchant, look for “Molten Strike fires 2 additional projectiles”. The Rare Affix priority is:

  1. +#% total Elemental Resistances (until capped)
  2. +# to maximum life (at least 80)
  3. % Increased Maximum life (Pristine Fossil Pristine Fossil)
  4. Nearby Enemies have -#% to Fire Resistance (Scorched Fossil Scorched Fossil)

Body Armour

Loreweave Loreweave is the best in slot Body Armour. Prior to it, you can use Belly of the Beast Belly of the Beast or any rare body armour with life and resistances. The Rare Affix priority is:

  1. +#% total Elemental Resistances (until capped)
  2. +# to maximum life (at least 100)
  3. % Increased Maximum life (Pristine Fossil Pristine Fossil; Elder Prefix)
  4. # to Armour

Gloves

Tombfist Tombfist gloves are best in slot, due to how much damage and life Abyssal jewels can provide to the build. Prior to them use a rare pair of gloves with as much life and resistances as possible. The Rare Affix priority is:

  1. +#% total Elemental Resistances (until capped)
  2. +# to maximum life (at least 60)
  3. % increased Attack Speed

Boots

Kaom's Roots Kaom's Roots are best in slot. Since they are not very expensive you should buy and wear them as soon as possible. Ideally, you want a corrupted pair with additional maximum Endurance charge, although this can be very pricey. Up until level 68, use rare boots with life, movement speed and resistances. The Rare Affix priority is:

  1. +#% total Elemental Resistances (until capped)
  2. +# to maximum life (at least 60)
  3. % increased Movement Speed (20-25% at least)

Belt

A well rolled rare Stygian Vise is best in slot for the build. Ideally, you would want to roll it with Pristine, Scorched and Prismatic fossils. Prior to it, you can use Belt of the Deceiver Belt of the Deceiver or any rare belt with life, elemental damage with attacks, and resistances. The Rare Affix priority is:

  1. +#% total Elemental Resistances (until capped)
  2. +# to maximum life (at least 80)
  3. % increased Elemental Damage with Attack Skills (at least 25%, can also be crafted via the crafting bench)
  4. % increased Fire Damage (Scorched Fossil Scorched Fossil)
  5. % increased Elemental Damage (Prismatic Fossil Prismatic Fossil)

Amulet

Here we have a few very good options for the build. Xoph's Blood Xoph's Blood provides a good amount of life, damage and allows you to save a passive skill point by dropping Avatar of Fire. Aul's Uprising Aul's Uprising allows you to run Anger Anger for free, which will let you use more buffs that reserve mana. Elder-based amulet will allow you to roll “Gain #% of Physical Damage as Extra Fire Damage”, which is a big damage boost. You can always use a regular rare amulet prior to these endgame options. The Rare Affix priority is:

  1. +#% total Elemental Resistances (until capped)
  2. +# to maximum life (at least 50)
  3. % increased Elemental Damage with Attack Skills (at least 25%)
  4. Adds # to # Physical Damage to Attacks

Rings

Ideally, you would want to wear two Kaom's Way Kaom's Way rings. Prior to them use any rare rings with life and resistances. The Rare Affix priority is:

  1. +#% total Elemental Resistances (until capped)
  2. +# to maximum life (at least 50)
  3. % increased Elemental Damage with Attack Skills (at least 25%)
  4. Adds # to # Physical Damage to Attacks

Weapons

Your endgame goal is to dual-wield two Nebuloch Nebuloch maces. Prior to them, Brutus' Lead Sprinkler Brutus' Lead Sprinkler should be able to fill your needs, since the build acquires a lot of strength early on anyway. There is not room for improvisation here, you should not really use any rare weapons. Grelwood Shank Grelwood Shank is also a good choice before you start using Nebuloches.

Flasks

Divine life flask is used in sticky situations, it should be instant with Bleed removal. Sapphire and Topaz flasks are used for the additional elemental damage mitigation they provide, try to roll Curse and Burning/Shock immunity on them. The Wise Oak The Wise Oak will allow you to penetrate enemies’ fire resistance, make sure your fire resistance is highest in order to achieve this. Dying Sun Dying Sun will improve your damage by providing additional projectiles, prior to it use a regular Ruby flask.

Be sure to check out our Flask Crafting Guide to learn everything you need to know about how to set up your non-Unique flasks.

Jewels

The only mandatory jewel the build requires is the Molten Strike’s threshold jewel Wildfire Wildfire. Ideally, you would want to corrupt it for the “Corrupted Blood cannot be inflicted on you” mod. Due to the fact the build uses a lot of unique items, capping elemental resistances can be hard. You can rely on having your utility flasks up and having all your Endurance charges but this is not reliable 100% of the time. This is why having a few jewels with elemental resistances can be useful. Watcher's Eye Watcher's Eye with Anger Anger mods can be very powerful, but expensive.

Regular Jewel Affix Priority

  1. % Increased Maximum Life
  2. % increased Attack Speed while Dual Wielding
  3. % increased Attack Speed with Maces
  4. Elemental Resistances

Abyssal Jewel Affix Priority

  1. Maximum Life (at least 35)
  2. % chance to Blind Enemies on Hit with Attacks
  3. % chance to gain Onslaught for 4 seconds on Kill
  4. % increased Attack Speed if you’ve dealt a Critical Strike Recently
  5. Adds # to # Fire Damage to Mace Attacks
  6. Adds # to # Fire Damage to Attacks

Leveling

As a reminder, we have several guides to help you level up a character.

The Molten Strike Juggernaut can be leveled with its signature skill since level 1. If you have Brutus' Lead Sprinkler Brutus' Lead Sprinkler and a Tabula Rasa Tabula Rasa this can be one of the easiest characters you have leveled. If not, Molten Strike Molten Strike is still a good choice, just make sure you have Wildfire Wildfire as soon as possible.

Leveling Trees

Here is an example of the early skill tree. Pick up the jewel socket as soon as possible so you can socket in your threshold jewel, which will make Molten Strike Molten Strike that much stronger. Then go for Iron Grip and Point Blank, these two keystone notables will immensely increase your damage.

Note: For endgame passive skill tree, please refer to the passive tree section.

Useful Leveling Uniques

As you begin a new character there are few unique items that can boost your power exponentially. Tabula Rasa Tabula Rasa allows you to have a 6-Linked skill as early as you get the gems. Wanderlust Wanderlust gives a decent movement speed, which will make your leveling that much more efficient. Goldrim Goldrim provides a lot of elemental resistances, this will let you worry less about gearing when approaching certain Act encounters. Dual-wielding two The Screaming Eagle The Screaming Eagle axes will carry you up to level 28, when you can equip Brutus' Lead Sprinkler Brutus' Lead Sprinkler.

Gem Progression

Using Tabula Rasa Tabula Rasa will allow you to have 6-Link gem setups early on, which is why we show such examples below. If you cannot get Tabula Rasa (or another item with a 6-Link), then simply prioritize the first gems in each link provided below.

In order to acquire gems that are not available to your class as a quest reward, simply ask a friend to buy them off vendors for you, or buy them yourself from Sioasa in The Library in Act III Library.

From level 1, you should use the following link.

  1. Molten Strike Molten Strike
  2. Onslaught Support Onslaught Support

At level 4, you should add Ancestral Protector Ancestral Protector for additional single target damage. At this point your Molten Strike Molten Strike link should look like this.

  1. Molten Strike Molten Strike
  2. Onslaught Support Onslaught Support
  3. Maim Support Maim Support
  4. Ancestral Call Support Ancestral Call Support

At level 10, add Leap Slam Leap Slam for additional mobility.

At level 16, add Herald of Ash Herald of Ash for additional damage.

By level 18, your Molten Strike Molten Strike link should look like this.

  1. Molten Strike Molten Strike
  2. Ancestral Call Support Ancestral Call Support
  3. Elemental Damage with Attacks Support Elemental Damage with Attacks Support
  4. Elemental Focus Support Elemental Focus Support
  5. Melee Physical Damage Support Melee Physical Damage Support
  6. Concentrated Effect Support Concentrated Effect Support

At level 24, you should add Anger Anger for additional damage.

Once you have Brutus' Lead Sprinkler Brutus' Lead Sprinkler equipped and you ascend into Unflinching, you can replace Melee Physical Damage Support Melee Physical Damage Support with Endurance Charge on Melee Stun Support Endurance Charge on Melee Stun Support or Greater Multiple Projectiles Support Greater Multiple Projectiles Support at level 38.

FAQ

I cannot sustain the burn from two Nebuloch Nebuloch maces since I do not have the rings yet, but the damage with Brutus' Lead Sprinkler Brutus' Lead Sprinkler sucks for maps, what should I do?

If you cannot sustain the degeneration effect you can use only one Nebuloch and a shield until you acquire Kaom's Way Kaom's Way. Use a rare shield with life and resistances.

Why is Ancestral Call Support Ancestral Call Support present in the single target gem setup?

Once you pick up Master of the Arena on the passive skill tree, you will have enough weapon range to attack an enemy from a distance that will essentially allow you hit the same target twice. Both with your own attack and with the Ancestral Call attack, which will spawn twice as many molten orbs, improving your single target damage a lot.

Why do you not recommend Multistrike?

Multistrike Support Multistrike Support is a great support gem, which can be used in a clearing gem setup. When it comes to single target you will encounter one problem, only the first attack from the Multistrike sequence can proc Elemental Overload, which means if you are unlucky with Critical Strikes you will have very poor Elemental Overload uptime on bosses.

Conclusion

The Molten Strike Juggernaut is a top-tier endgame boss killer. There are very few other builds that can achieve this amount of damage mitigation while also having the damage to bring down the toughest bosses the game has to offer.

Changelog
  •

Revisited and updated for Blight 3.8. It is worth mentioning that the build has extreme damage potential and is one of the tankiest in the game, but it might feel clumsy to some due to the fact it does not reach vast amounts of attack speed like other builds do.

  •

Revisited the whole build guide and updated Passive trees and Gem sections for Legion 3.7.

  •

    Updated passive trees.

  •

Revisited and updated for Synthesis 3.6.

  •

Made the playstyle section more descriptive, and improved the gearing section by providing more detailed recommendations.

Hello Atix, sorry for the long delay on my replay. The difference is that with Nebuloch you gain incredible amounts of flat Armour, Chaos resistance and physical damage per Endurance charge, which is great when you stack a lot of Endurance charges. Grelwood works good as a budget option and is used in other Molten Strike builds.

Firstly, i think the skill tree is incomplete. Second, im lvl 76 and i have troubles with even uberlab, i get one shotted by izaro. İ have 3 good jewels, 2 nebulochs, 2 kaom’s way, kaom’s roots, wise oak flask and decent rares. Any suggestions? BTW do you have any footage defeating Uber Elder , Pale council , Breachlords etc.. with THİS build?
    Waiting for your replies.

Yea I don’t see the “end game” passive tree, the link to the section below doesn’t go anywhere fruitful.

The link you are referring is probably in the note of section 4.2 Passive Tree and it says “Note: For leveling skill trees prior to this endgame passive skill tree, please refer to the leveling section down below.” This is a link to the leveling trees and it works as intended.

Hi, is Loreweave still the best in slot chest piece with only 78% max res in synthesis?

Ps: Very nice guide, I made my first character with it and had no trouble getting to t15 maps so far. Only atziri has been a problem but that’s because i suck at dodging x)

Loreweave Loreweave is still one of the top choices for the build for sure. You can also use other substitutes, if you choose to do so. Thanks for the kind feedback.

    Hello, and welcome!

For Loreweave, one of the variable mods is “Your Maximum Resistances are 76 – 78%” – the comment in the guide means that you should focus on this one and try to find a Loreweave that has a “good” roll there, like 78. Honestly, I’m not sure how relevant this still is (I’ll ask Vvckd) since in the past, that range used to be 76-80, meaning there was actually a big difference between a good and a bad roll for that mod. With such a small gap, it might not matter as much.

Feel free to ask any other questions you may have!

The Loreweave Loreweave roll is not of super big importance but I’d recommend getting a 78% one, even 2% maximum resistance can make big difference in the endgame. You can easily use a Divine Orb Divine Orb on your own, you will have 33% chance to hit the highest roll, which is not bad.

I found a small way to modify the final passive tree to be better. Instead of grabbing the str ABOVE Golem’s Blood and going over grab the dex ABOVE Point Blank. This will give you 40 Dex instead of 30 Dex/10 Str, BUT you can grab the +30 Str at the top left of the map later or get the +8% fire damage & +12% burning damage on the top left when you reach it instead. This method gives you +20 more raw Str OR -10 raw Str for +8% fire damage. Here is a link to the modified skill tree: https://poeplanner.com/ABEAAQ0AEREAAIPG2FhjPfyMz_ZIXz8UIO8OUEfkUcEEeWipbsAaeA218jWS2L3-j03jpldvO1ivNuiGYCKvOFN25zpSvJ8YkRRN_Esyfg48FHHZfIIH8kH46_PdaGW77ZHO6hh2rM9-rY33MnKprKpZ8xo4kFUnL58-LdI62DD4d-XkVaIA8B8Es4KbwGZyD2aelG9mVPrSFm_jaiSqNukdFI9GpwjYJFZIr41hUu9OXhNAoHrvBS107Ua302-S0BLhIWB08RjbFHWkwnfX459noId2Sn1M_04qj2Aj05pqvqdlTb02R35qkxm0Aecb-iXfpBma_guN1WVbr4TZEmnAAQbGXaTd1cse0jh9c60JAAAAAAA=

You should have picked up all the Endurance charges and most of the important Life Regeneration on the tree, if you are still degen-ing you just need a bigger Life pool, which will make your Life Regeneration more efficient. At this point we recommend using just one of the Nebuloch maces until you feel comfortable sustaining the two.

I do understand your problem in battling the degeneration effect, reaching over 1k Life Regeneration requires some specific itemization and is not so easy. Having the two Kaom's Way Kaom's Way rings in combination with all of your Endurance charges and a Vitality Vitality is pretty much mandatory in the beginning.
