Righteous Fire Chieftain Build Guide (PoE Blight 3.8)

Build Introduction

While Righteous Fire Righteous Fire might not be a new spell in the game, with the changes to the Marauder/Chieftain, it is worth revisiting this ability. Righteous Fire is a degeneration spell that deals damage around you based on the amount of life you have, while damaging you as well. With this build, not only will we have enough Fire resistance and Life Regeneration to cover the degeneration effect of Righteous Fire Righteous Fire, but on top of that we will have around 30% of our life regenerated per second, lots of armor, 80% to all resistances and 10,000 life when we get our gear, which makes this one of the tankiest builds in the game – safe for hardcore and extremely easy for farming Uber Lab. There are of course some side effects to being this tanky, for example our damage might not be as high as some other builds, which may make some boss fights take a while. But that will not be a problem because we would pretty much be invincible.

Pros & Cons

Pros

*- Extremely durable with around 30% of our life being regenerated per second
*- Easy Uber lab farming
*- Safe to play in hardcore
*- Decent clear speed
*- Good League Starter

Cons

*- Might be hard to level up
*- Not the best boss killer / sometimes the damage is lacking
*- The mandatory chest for the build is very expensive
*- Just running around and everything dying around you might get boring

  • Not the fastest build in the game
  • We have to make sure that our Endurance charges are up all the time

Playstyle

As mentioned above, our main skill will be Righteous Fire and we will be using the Vaal version (Vaal Righteous Fire Vaal Righteous Fire). Our playstyle pretty much involves us jumping around with Leap Slam Leap Slam and everything dying around us thanks to Righteous Fire Righteous Fire. When we get to bosses or harder to kill rare mobs we will be using Scorching Ray Scorching Ray with Cast while Channelling Support Cast while Channelling Support & Flammability Flammability to drastically reduce the enemy’s Fire Resistance; then we will use our flasks and use the Vaal version of Righteous Fire Righteous Fire to kill them. One thing some people may find annoying is that we have to make sure we have all of our 9 Endurance Charges are up all the time; not to worry though because they would be pretty easy to obtain – when our Endurance Charges are about to run out , we just use Scorching Ray Scorching Ray a couple of times; thanks to the Chieftain’s ascendancy we will have 35% chance to gain an Endurance Charge when you we use a Fire skill.

Note: Channelling Scorching Ray Scorching Ray will not give us Endurance Charges. It only has a chance to give us Endurance Charge when we use it – so to make sure we get an Endurance Charge just press the spell a few times in a quick succession. We will also have a decent chance to obtain Endurance Charges when we get struck or we kill an enemy.

Passive tree

Early Game

Your early build should look like this

Mid Game

Our mid game build should look like this

End Game Passive Tree

Our End Game Passive Tree should look like this

Ascendancy – Chieftain

Normal Lab – Tasalio, Cleansing Water

After we complete the Normal Lab we will pick Tasalio, Cleansing Water. Note that this might be one of the biggest reasons we have picked a Chieftain for Righteous Fire. Not only does it give us 2% Life regeneration and enough Fire Resistance to never have to worry about Fire Resistance on gear again, it also converts 10% of the Physical damage taken to Fire Damage, as well as giving us the bonus that when we get struck with Fire Damage, our Life Recovery gets increased by 50%.

Note: That only works on Physical Damage and Fire Damage attacks. If we manage to convert Lightning and Cold damage with the new Tempered by War timeless jewel, that would be a huge bonus. However, not to worry, the 50% Increased Life Recovery will be up most of the time.

Cruel Lab – Tawhoa, Forest’s Strength

Next we will pick Tawhoa, Forest’s Strength from the Cruel Lab. This one will give us 5% extra fire damage for each Endurance Charge that we have with 9 Charges up we will have 45% extra damage. It also gives us the bonus to have 35% chance to gain an Endurance Charge when you we use a Fire skill. That would prove pretty useful with Scorching Ray Scorching Ray, because if our Endurance Charges are about to go out we just use Scorching Ray Scorching Ray a couple of times in a quick succession to get them back.

Merciless Lab – Valako Storm’s Embrace

In the Merciless Lab we will get Valako Storm’s Embrace – it gives us 0.5% Life Regeneration for each Endurance Charge that we have + a bonus endurance charge. We will have 9 endurance charges so that means we get easy 4.5% just from Valako Storm’s Embrace.

Eternal Lab – Ramako Sun’s light

This one will give us 15% extra burning damage. Note that this ascendancy is pretty useless, but there isn’t a better option unfortunately.

Gem Links

Righteous Fire (4 link)

This should be in your helmet and the main gem links are as follows.

  1. Righteous Fire Righteous Fire
  2. Burning Damage Support Burning Damage Support
  3. Elemental Focus Support Elemental Focus Support
  4. Increased Area of Effect Support Increased Area of Effect Support

Note: One of the best ways to upgrade our damage is to obtain an Elder helmet which would give us an additional support gem in the form of a modifier. For an example “Socketed gems are supported by level # Burning Damage”. We should try to get one with Burning Damage Support Burning Damage Support or Concentrated Effect Support Concentrated Effect Support, or both of them combined. If we do that we can now use Efficacy Support Efficacy Support instead of Burning Damage Support Burning Damage Support, since we would already have it as a modifier on the helmet.

Note: Just buy a helmet with a decent life increase and resists and make sure it has one of the following gems above as a modifier. Socketed gems are supported by level ?? Area of Effect are usually pretty cheap, if you get one – you can put Concentrated Effect Support Concentrated Effect Support instead of area-of-effect support , which will increase our damage by a lot while negating the reducing Area of Effect of Concentrated Effect Support Concentrated Effect Support

Leap Slam (3 link)

This is our main mobility skill and we would link it as follows.

  1. Leap Slam Leap Slam
  2. Faster Attacks Support Faster Attacks Support
  3. Fortify Support Fortify Support

Scorching Ray (4 link)

We would be using Scorching Ray to reduce the enemy’s resistance and cast some other abilities while we are at it, with the following link.

  1. Scorching Ray Scorching Ray
  2. Cast while Channelling Support Cast while Channelling Support
  3. Flammability Flammability
  4. Summon Stone Golem Summon Stone Golem

Note: You can also link Scorching Ray Scorching Ray with Blood Magic Support Blood Magic Support if you do not want to drink that Mana flask, but that would mean you would have to occasionally cast your Summon Stone Golem Summon Stone Golem.

Purity of Fire

Purity of Fire Purity of Fire

Molten Shell

  1. Molten Shell Molten Shell ( max level )
  2. Cast when Damage Taken Support Cast when Damage Taken Support ( max level )
  3. Increased Duration Support Increased Duration Support

Bandits & Pantheon

Bandits

- Help Oak. It will give us extra Life regeneration and Physical damage reduction.

Pantheon

Major God

For a major god, the best one is Soul of Arakaali, as it would reduce the damage we take over time – most notably the damage we deal to ourselves with Righteous Fire Righteous Fire.

Minor God

For a minor god, the best one is Soul of Tukohama as it would reduce physical damage taken while stationary. This is great because we will be using Scorching Ray Scorching Ray most of the time and we can use the extra damage reduction.

Gear / Items

Weapon

One of the best weapons for this build (and quite an affordable one) is Doryani's Catalyst Doryani's Catalyst, as it gives a huge amount of Elemental Damage + it has a decent attack speed for our Leap Slam Leap Slam. Another good one to start with is Doon Cuebiyari Doon Cuebiyari, as we would have enough Strength for us to benefit from it early. However, the best weapon would be a Shaped Rare Sceptre with the following stats:

  1. + % increased Elemental Damage (around 100% in total)
  2. + % increased Damage over time
  3. + % increased Area Damage
  4. + % increased Damage per Endurance Charge
  5. + % increased Fire Damage

Note: A Sceptre with these stats will be way too expensive for you to spend your budget on especially early, so just start with Doryani's Catalyst Doryani's Catalyst. Plus, you will need that extra currency for your Armour and Helmet.

Shield

We recommend to choose between one of these two: Rise of the Phoenix Rise of the Phoenix or Saffell's Frame Saffell's Frame. They are both pretty cheap and great options. With Saffell's Frame Saffell's Frame and our passive tree we will have Lightning and Cold Resistance capped at 80% and Fire resistance even higher thanks to Purity of Fire Purity of Fire.

You can look for a corrupted version that gives “# + %increased maximum life”.

Helmet

You can just start with a decent Rare Helmet with the following stats:

  1. + % total Cold Resistances (until capped)
  2. + % total Lightning Resistances (until capped)
  3. + % to maximum life

After that we would be looking for an Elder Helmet, as they can roll skill gems as affixes. The following are the most interesting:

  1. + % Socketed Gems are supported by level ?? Area of effect
  2. + % Socketed Gems are supported by level ?? Burning Damage
  3. + % Socketed Gems are supported by level ?? Concentrated Effect

Note: Obtaining an Elder one with all of the above stats is enough. However, there are extremely expensive Elder Essence Crafted helmets with stats like additional burning damage, reducing enemies’s fire resistance, increased AoE etc. We do not recommend spending your currency on a helmet like this till you get all of your other gear.

Note also that you can get an enchant from Uber lab that increases your Righteous Fire damage by 40%. Once you get a decent Elder helmet with one of the support gems mentioned above you can do some Uber Labs and try to get the enchant.

Body Armour

No question about it, by far the best choice here is Kaom's Heart Kaom's Heart. This is probably the most expensive part of our build, but it increases our damage and durability by so much there is not a better replacement. Before you spend too much currency on other gear make sure you get Kaom's Heart Kaom's Heart. Before you obtain it start with Ambu's Charge Ambu's Charge or a decent Rare Body Armour with:

  1. + % total Cold Resistances (until capped)
  2. + % total Lightning Resistances (until capped)
  3. + % to maximum life

Gloves

Just a pair of rare gloves with the following stats would do the trick:

  1. + % total Cold Resistances (until capped)
  2. + % total Lightning Resistances (until capped)
  3. + % to maximum life

Belt

A regular rare belt would be a good starter with the following stats:

  1. + % total Cold Resistances (until capped)
  2. + % total Lightning Resistances (until capped)
  3. + % to maximum life
  4. + % Increased Life Recovery rate (Elder)

Note: If we have 2000 of our life regenerated, with an Elder belt with 20% Increased Life Recovery rate, that would increase our life regenerated per second to 2400; it is an amazing modifier for this build.

Boots

Kaom's Roots Kaom's Roots is a great option or you can just look for a decent rare boots with the following stats:

  1. + % total Cold Resistances (until capped)
  2. + % total Lightning Resistances (until capped)
  3. + % to maximum life
  4. + % Movement speed increase

Note : While using Kaom's Roots Kaom's Roots it will be hard to cap our resistances. If you get a decent Amulet,Gloves and Belt with resists we can than use it.

Rings

For rings, we are going to use 2x Kaom's Way Kaom's Way; there is simply no better option. They are not that expensive nowadays and should be the first 2 uniques you get. They are mandatory.

Note: Kaom's Way Kaom's Way gives us 0.4% Life regeneration for each Endurance Charge + an extra Endurance Charge. We have 7 endurance charges from our passive tree and Ascendancy and we have 1.1% Life Regenerated for each. That is 7.7% life regeneration per second with all of our endurance charges and life regen per endurance charge and ascendancy. Now we are going to skip the math but with 2x Kaom’s way you will have 17.1% life regeneration per second and when we get hit that would be increased by 50% from our Ascendancy which means 25.65% Life regeneration per second just from our Endurance Charges. On top of that Endurance charges increase our damage / area of effect / give us physical damage reduction and elemental resistances.

Amulet

Go for a rare one with the following stats :

  1. + % total Cold Resistances (until capped)
  2. + % total Lightning Resistances (until capped)
  3. + % to maximum life
  4. + % Fire Damage increased

Jewels

We are going to prioritize regular jewels over abyssal ones, and make sure they are a combination of some of the following stats:

  1. + % Increased Maximum Life
  2. + % total Cold Resistances (until capped)
  3. + % total Lightning Resistances (until capped)
  4. + % Burning Damage
  5. + % Fire Damage increased

Flasks

Witchfire Brew Witchfire Brew is great to have as it would give us increased damage over time while under flask effect (aka Righteous Fire damage). A Ruby Flask is great to have in this build, as it reduces the fire damage you take. A mana flask is a must unless you decide you want to use Blood Magic Support Blood Magic Support on your Leap Slam and Scourching Ray. A Quicksilver flask is also decent to have as it increases the speed of your Leap Slam Leap Slam. Make sure you have remove bleeding on one of your flasks. % life regenerated per second while under flask effect is also a good modifier to have.

Leveling

As a reminder, we have several guides to help you level up a character.

The way you are going to level up this character is by using a melee skill whichever suits your taste. The one we recommend is Sunder Sunder. Make sure you start linking it with Rage Support Rage Support, Melee Physical Damage Support Melee Physical Damage Support & Faster Attacks Support Faster Attacks Support. You are going to take advantage of the huge amount of Life Regeneration you will have and just tank everything ( make sure you are still playing safe though). Try to keep your gear upgraded all the time as it will be hard before we switch to Righteous Fire Righteous Fire. Make sure you use Herald of Ash Herald of Ash for the extra damage. Leveling up is probably the hardest part in this build especially after the third-fourth act. If you get early Kaom's Way Kaom's Way x2 you can switch
to Righteous Fire as soon as you complete your Cruel Lab. Just play defensively, take advantage of your life regeneration, but don’t become too overconfident as your lack of damage early may prove to be your downfall. You can always check for good unique weapons and armour to buy while leveling as most of them will increase your damage and defenses exponentially.

Conclusion

While this build may lack in damage and boss killing and may not suit everyone’s taste gameplay wise . It’s one of the tankiest build in the game which allows us to do all of the game’s content without being afraid for our life all of the time.

    Hello,
thank you for another build build and your time lost on it.

Unfortunately, this time, don’t check out all the gems, which is quite a problem for newer players.

    Have a nice day.

Hey Bery, not sure what you mean by ‘’ don’t check out all the gems ‘’. I’ve covered up all the gems I personally used to level up with this build in the ,,leveling’‘ section and above that in the ,,Gem Links’‘ section I have covered all the gems that I use at the end of the game. If you have ideas for other gems that can be included please do share, so I can check them out and put them in the guide :) .

Thank you for your reply, I probably made a bad statement. I like the way you build the builds.

But here I only see 2× 4link, 1× 3link in gems for the end game. I can’t get the rest together.

Refining all 5 bottles and adding all the points in the tree would be just a cake on the cake.

    Have a nice day.

Hello again Berry. The reason there is no 6 link in this build is because the manditory chest for the build Kaom’s Heart has no sockets – so that means there is no place to put 6 link. Note that I have also recommended Boots that have no sockets as well. For Righteous Fire builds the best place to put the Righteous Fire it self is in the helmet. If you follow the recommended items above that would leave us to put the other 4 link – Scorching Ray – in the gloves. The Leap slam goes in the shield – 3 link . And the Auras – Purity of Fire etc. go in the weapon. Not sure what you mean by adding all points to the tree, but above I’ve made 3 separate links for early/mid and late game with 3 different links – with the End Game build having all the points spend – here is a link if you missed it above ——> END BUILD

Please also note that this build unlike other builds doesn’t need any more gems than the one’s I’ve mentioned in the guide. So there is nothing for you to guess, but again if you find a Gem/Spell that works good with the build please do share – I am always open to new ideas :) . And please do ask if you have more questions regarding the build :) .

LLRF should still be stronger, but not by a lot and only in terms of damage – with this one we get like 30-40% life regen per second which is pure joy for me to play especially in Labs.

so i got a helmet that has socketed gems are supported by level 18 burning damage and concentrated effect. what 4th gem would you put into the helmet? RF- elemental focus – increased area of effect – X
preferably a red gem since its hard for me to change colours on the sockets.
fire penetration? or less duration? (not sure if that even works)

Hey unfortunately penetration doesn’t work with RF and neither does less duration. Fire penetration supports only spell that ,,hit’‘ the enemy. You will need to get Efficacy Support Efficacy Support , i’ve checked all the Red support gem’s there isn’t one good for RF and most of them don’t even work with it.

Usually when you equip Rise of the Phoenix Rise of the Phoenix. But unless you are playing Solo self found I suggest you buy Kaom’s way as it is pretty cheap.

    Hi,
again I would like to thank you for your build and ask a few things.

    1) In the last 3-line you only have Purity of Fire and Vitality … what did you complete the set – last gem? I have the golem in gloves without using Blood Magic.

    2) What enchants for boots and gloves did you use?

    3) Is it possible to specify the recommended flask?

Thank you and have a nice day.

Hey, when I made the changes for 3.8 I added the Mortal Conviction. But i forgot to remove the comment about the Vitality in the Watcher’s eye section. Thank you for noticing. We are dropping Vitality since we already have like 30% life regen without it :) .

Hey , Purity of Fire Purity of Fire is more than enough and Mortal Conviction allow us to have only one aura as you already mentioned. in 3.7 I recommended Vitality Vitality only if you had Watcher’s eye with Vitality mods, it’s pretty much useless we don’t need Life regen but the extra 20% health is nice. Also we won’t have mana requirement for Scorching Ray and Leap slam which is great. Since we already have the all the skills we need. If you want to add something extra I would recommend Molten Shell Molten Shell , I will add it to the build right now . Thank you :) .

Hey , Molten Shell Molten Shell is a great defensive option. But if you want to upgrade your purity – since it’s free with Mortal Conviction we don’t need to worry about cost , however there are no good support options for Purity of Fire Purity of Fire , the only one I can think of is Empower Support Empower Support. However keep in mind that it’s too expensive and Purity Of Fire gives you one extra resistance only if it’s on level 23. So that means you will need level 21 Purity of Fire Purity of Fire with level 3 Empower Support Empower Support. However that option is too expensive and like I said there are no good options for Purity supports. You have 2 free slots so if I was in your place id go with Molten Shell Molten Shell + Cast when Damage Taken Support Cast when Damage Taken Support. Please note that we have lot’s of armor and Fire damage so Molten Shell Molten Shell is great to have and if you have the vaal version – it’s even better Vaal Molten Shell Vaal Molten Shell.
