Introduction

The Shock Nova Inquisitor is a Crit-based caster that specializes in dealing tons of Lightning damage. The character achieves this by taking advantage of Inquisitor’s Inevitable Judgement, which allows you to penetrate enemies’ elemental resistances with Critical Strikes. This results in Shock Nova Shock Nova‘s incredibly big hits essentially being “true” damage. The build also does great work of utilizing Energy Leech Support Energy Leech Support in combination with Eldritch Battery and Mind over Matter.

Build Summary

There are no mandatory items the build requires in order to work. The Devouring Diadem The Devouring Diadem can save up some passive tree points if you choose to use it. Carcass Jack Carcass Jack greatly increases the area of effect of the character, which can result in smoother clear speed. A well-rolled Shaper-based Staff might be the most expensive part of the build along with a decent Watcher's Eye Watcher's Eye with Wrath Wrath mods.

Pros & Cons

Pros

+ Hardcore viable
+ Good balance between clear speed and single target damage
+ Has the potential to Shock bosses

Cons

- Cannot do Elemental Reflect

Playstyle

Offensively, placing down an Orb of Storms Orb of Storms and casting Shock Nova Shock Nova is what you should be doing. Vaal Ice Nova Vaal Ice Nova can be used in a 4-Link to clean up weaker monster packs. While fighting bosses, keep Intensify Support Intensify Support in mind, because that gem makes it so that you do more damage closer to you the more you cast.

Defensively, you will kill most things before they even have the chance to strike back. Energy Leech Support Energy Leech Support in combination with Eldritch Battery and Mind over Matter will result in a reliable Life buffer.

For playstyle, while clearing try to keep a little distance between you and the enemies and cast Shock Nova. When you need to deal great amounts of single target damage make sure your Diamond Flask Diamond Flask is active and stay close to the target for maximum damage output.

Ascendancy, Passive tree, Bandits and Pantheons

Ascendancy (Templar – Inquisitor)

  1. Righteous Providence
  2. Inevitable Judgement
  3. Sanctuary
  4. Pious Path

Righteous Providence provides a lot of Critical modifiers along with increasing the effect of your Freezes and Shocks.

Inevitable Judgement is the bulk of damage of the build; ignoring elemental resistances with Critical Strikes proves to be very strong, especially with this build.

Sanctuary provides 10% overall damage increase against enemies that stand on Consecrated Ground, and it also allows you to have better uptime on that particular ground effect.

Pious Path provides a lot of offense and sustain in the form of 200 Energy Shield per second and Elemental Ailment immunity.

Passive tree

Here is the endgame passive tree for the build.

We focus on picking up efficient Staff nodes along with a lot of Life, area of effect, and some powerful spell Critical nodes like Annihilation, Doom Cast and Assassination. The main keystone notables we pick are Mind over Matter and Eldritch Battery, which allows our Energy Shield to guard our Mana instead of Life, this is great when combined with Energy Leech Support Energy Leech Support.

Bandits

For this specific build we should help Alira in Act II. The critical multiplier, flat mana regeneration, and 15% all elemental resistances are stronger than the 2 passive skill points.

Pantheons

Major: All major Pantheon powers can be beneficial for the build, although Soul of Solaris is probably the best choice in general.

Minor: Same as major Pantheons, all minor ones are useful for the build. We recommend Soul of Gruthkul, which improves physical damage mitigation.

Pantheon powers can be upgraded by using Divine Vessel in the Map Device while you are activating the particular Map that contains the boss you need. Once you’ve killed the boss and captured his soul, you need to deliver the vessel to Sin in Oriath.

Gems

Shock Nova Shock Nova is your signature skill, which should ideally be used in a 6-Link. For mobility, use Flame Dash Flame Dash. In order to reserve your Mana you should use Wrath Wrath, Herald of Thunder Herald of Thunder and Herald of Ice Herald of Ice; if you do not have high enough Energy Shield pool you can use Discipline Discipline instead of the two Herald skills. Orb of Storms Orb of Storms can help with clear speed and Power&Frenzy charge generation. Vaal Ice Nova Vaal Ice Nova can be utilized in order to clear large quantity of monsters with a single cast, it will do so even on a 4-Link.

For all the gem links we provide below, keep in mind that we list the gems in order of priority, meaning that if you lack the required number of sockets to fit all the gems, the first ones to drop are the ones at the bottom. Also note that in-game, as long as the sockets are linked, it makes no difference at all what order the gems are placed in.

Shock Nova (6-Link)

Shock Nova Shock Nova is an area of effect skill that hits foes in a ring around the caster, it does more damage with its inner ring and less damage with its outer one, ideally for maximum damage output you should be near the target. This is a universal 6-Link that works great for both clearing and single target.

  1. Shock Nova Shock Nova
  2. Spell Echo Support Spell Echo Support
  3. Intensify Support Intensify Support
  4. Energy Leech Support Energy Leech Support
  5. Increased Critical Strikes Support Increased Critical Strikes Support
  6. Faster Casting Support Faster Casting Support

Flame Dash (3-Link)

Flame Dash Flame Dash will improve your mobility by a great deal. Keeping Arcane Surge Support Arcane Surge Support at low level (4-5 max) will ensure you get the buff every time you cast the skill.

  1. Flame Dash Flame Dash
  2. Arcane Surge Support Arcane Surge Support
  3. Faster Casting Support Faster Casting Support

Orb or Storms (4-Link)

Orb of Storms Orb of Storms is used mostly for the utility it provides by generating charges.

  1. Orb of Storms Orb of Storms
  2. Power Charge On Critical Support Power Charge On Critical Support
  3. Ice Bite Support Ice Bite Support
  4. Innervate Support Innervate Support

Vaal Ice Nova (4-Link)

Vaal Ice Nova Vaal Ice Nova is purely used for the Vaal version of the skill, which is great at clearing weaker monster packs.

  1. Vaal Ice Nova Vaal Ice Nova
  2. Increased Critical Strikes Support Increased Critical Strikes Support
  3. Controlled Destruction Support Controlled Destruction Support
  4. Increased Area of Effect Support Increased Area of Effect Support

Other Gems

Ideally, you would want to reserve your Mana by using Wrath Wrath, Herald of Thunder Herald of Thunder and Herald of Ice Herald of Ice. Vaal Molten Shell Vaal Molten Shell should be used in combination with a Granite Flask Granite Flask in order to create a decent shield that mitigates most of the incoming damage.

Gearing

Capping your elemental resistances is essential and it should always be your top priority in any build; it should be the first thing you do when gearing up a character. Obtaining a 6-link, while very powerful and certainly recommended, can potentially be very expensive (requiring an average of 1500 Orbs of Fusing, obviously depending on your luck); as such, this should not really be a goal for you while gearing up, and you should instead settle for a 5-link until you have enough resources.

Helmet

A well-rolled rare Helmet is a great choice for the build. The Devouring Diadem The Devouring Diadem will give you Eldritch Battery for free and will allow you to save some Mana by reducing the Mana reservation of socketed Auras and Heralds, this can essentially allow you to put on additional buff on. For labyrinth enchant, look for “12% increased Shock Nova Area of Effect”. The rare affix priority is:

  1. +#% total Elemental Resistance (until capped)
  2. +# to maximum life (80)
  3. % increased Maximum Life (Pristine Fossil Pristine Fossil)

Body Armour

Using a 6-Linked weapon allows you to not worry about links in your Body Armour, which is why
Kaom's Heart Kaom's Heart is a great choice. Carcass Jack Carcass Jack can help smoothing out the clearing of the build by a considerable amount. Inpulsa's Broken Heart Inpulsa's Broken Heart is another great clear speed boost. A well-rolled rare Body Armour can also be very beneficial for the build. The rare affix priority is:

  1. +#% total Elemental Resistance (until capped)
  2. +# to maximum life (80)
  3. % increased Maximum Life (Pristine Fossil Pristine Fossil; Elder Prefix)
  4. % of Damage is taken from Mana before Life (Lucent Fossil Lucent Fossil)

Gloves

A pair of well-rolled Fingerless Silk Gloves Fingerless Silk Gloves is one of the best choices we can make for the Gloves item slot. The rare affix priority is:

  1. +#% total Elemental Resistance (until capped)
  2. +# to maximum life (80)
  3. % increased Maximum Life (Pristine Fossil Pristine Fossil)

Boots

Well-rolled rare Boots should be used. For labyrinth enchant, look for “16% increased Attack and Cast Speed if you’ve Killed Recently”. The rare affix priority is:

  1. +#% total Elemental Resistance (until capped)
  2. % increased Movement Speed (at least 25%)
  3. +# to maximum life (80)
  4. % increased Maximum Life (Pristine Fossil Pristine Fossil)

Belt

A well-rolled Stygian Vise Stygian Vise outclasses other Belt choices. The rare affix priority is:

  1. +#% total Elemental Resistance (until capped)
  2. +# to maximum life (80)
  3. % increased Lightning Damage (Metallic Fossil Metallic Fossil)
  4. % increased Elemental Damage (Prismatic Fossil Prismatic Fossil)

Amulet

A well-rolled Amulet is best in slot. In this item slot you should fill attribute requirements. The rare affix priority is:

  1. +#% total Elemental Resistance (until capped)
  2. +# to maximum life (50)
  3. % increased Spell Damage
  4. % to Global Critical Multiplier
  5. % increased Cast Speed

Rings

Well-rolled rare Rings are best in slot. Ideally, you would want one with a “Curse Enemies with Level # Assassin’s Mark on Hit” (Shaper Suffix). The rare affix priority is:

  1. +#% total Elemental Resistance (until capped)
  2. +# to maximum life (50)
  3. Curse Enemies with Level # Assassin’s Mark on Hit (Shaper Suffix)

Weapon

A well-rolled Shaper-based Staff is best in slot. The rare affix priority is:

  1. +2 to Level of Socketed Lightning Gems
  2. % increased Spell Damage
  3. % increased Critical Strike Chance for Spells / % chance to gain a Power Charge on Critical Strike
  4. % increased Critical Strike Chance for Spells
  5. % increased Cast Speed

Flasks

Diamond Flask Diamond Flask is mandatory in every Critical-based build; this is a good flask to have Curse or Freeze immunity on. Divine Life Flask Divine Life Flask should used as Instant or half-Instant along with Bleeding Removal suffix. For the other flask slots we recommend using Granite Flask Granite Flask, Quicksilver Flask Quicksilver Flask and a Basalt Flask Basalt Flask. Make sure you have Bleeding, Curse and Freezing immunity on your flasks.

Be sure to check out our Flask Crafting Guide to learn everything you need to know about how to set up your non-Unique flasks.

Jewels

There are no mandatory build-enabling Jewels for the build. A Watcher's Eye Watcher's Eye with Wrath Wrath mods can be very powerful, but expensive.

Regular Jewel Affix Priority

  1. % increased Maximum Life
  2. % increased Spell Damage while wielding a Staff
  3. % to Critical Strike Multiplier with Lightning Skills
  4. % increased Lightning Damage
  5. % increased Area Damage
  6. % to Critical Strike Multiplier for Spells
  7. % to Critical Strike Multiplier with Elemental Skills

Abyssal Jewel Affix Priority

  1. Maximum Life (at least 35)
  2. % chance to gain Onslaught for # seconds on Kill
  3. % to Global Critical Strike Multiplier
  4. % to Critical Strike Multiplier if you’ve Killed Recently

Leveling

As a reminder, we have several guides to help you level up a character.

Leveling Trees

The early passive skill tree is very straight forward. As in order build guides, we recommend transitioning to Critical Strikes around level 60 or above, at this point you should have Inevitable Judgement and you should start picking up efficient Critical nodes like Doom Cast and Assassination.

Useful Leveling Unique Items

As you begin a new character, there are few unique items that can boost your power exponentially. Tabula Rasa Tabula Rasa allows you to have a 6-Linked skill as early as you get the gems. Wanderlust Wanderlust gives a decent movement speed, which will make your leveling that much more efficient. Goldrim Goldrim provides a lot of elemental resistances, this will let you worry less about gearing when approaching certain Act encounters.

If you are a new player (or if this is your first character for the league), then note that obtaining these items will be very difficult, if not impossible. They are rare drops, which you can otherwise only acquire if you have saved up currency, so do not focus on them too much, and instead simply look for items that match the affix priorities listed in the gearing section above.

Gem Progression

Using Tabula Rasa Tabula Rasa will allow you to have 6-Link gem setups early on, which is why we show such examples below. If you cannot get Tabula Rasa (or another item with a 6-Link), then simply prioritize the first gems in each link provided below.

In order to acquire gems that are not available to your class as a quest reward, simply ask a friend to buy them off vendors for you, or buy them yourself from Sioasa in The Library in Act III Library.

From level 1, you should use the following link.

  1. Freezing Pulse Freezing Pulse
  2. Onslaught Support Onslaught Support
  3. Arcane Surge Support Arcane Surge Support

At level 4, you can add Frost Bomb Frost Bomb for better damage output.

At level 10, you should add Flame Dash Flame Dash for additional mobility.

At level 16, you should add Herald of Ice Herald of Ice and Herald of Thunder Herald of Thunder for additional damage.

By level 18, your Freezing Pulse Freezing Pulse link should look like this.

  1. Freezing Pulse Freezing Pulse
  2. Onslaught Support Onslaught Support
  3. Controlled Destruction Support Controlled Destruction Support
  4. Arcane Surge Support Arcane Surge Support
  5. Added Cold Damage Support Added Cold Damage Support
  6. Faster Casting Support Faster Casting Support

At level 24, you should pick up Discipline Discipline and Wrath Wrath in order to level the gems.

Finally, at level 28 you can drop your Freezing Pulse Freezing Pulse link and start using your signature skill, Shock Nova Shock Nova.

  1. Shock Nova Shock Nova
  2. Controlled Destruction Support Controlled Destruction Support
  3. Faster Casting Support Faster Casting Support
  4. Added Lightning Damage Support Added Lightning Damage Support

At level 38, your Shock Nova Shock Nova link should look like this.

  1. Shock Nova Shock Nova
  2. Spell Echo Support Spell Echo Support
  3. Intensify Support Intensify Support
  4. Energy Leech Support Energy Leech Support
  5. Increased Critical Strikes Support Increased Critical Strikes Support
  6. Faster Casting Support Faster Casting Support

FAQ

What map mods are impossible to do?

Elemental reflect is impossible to do. No Regeneration and Cannot Leech should also be skipped.

Conclusion

The Shock Nova Inquisitor is a Critical-oriented caster that excels at dealing tons of Lightning damage, which penetrates enemies’ resistances. The character’s damage potential is exceptionally high when properly geared and has enough survivability to deal with the endgame content.

Hey, the Spiritual Aid and points leading up to it are very point-efficient and this is why we choose to pick it.
