Introduction

Spark Spark is now one of the oldest skills in Path of Exile, and has weaved its way in and out of many metas through the years, from totem builds designed for clear speed and safety to self-cast variants that shred the entire screen. This build is one of the latter, a self-casting terror that has an excellent combination of damage, defense, and economy.

This build is an excellent league starter, and requires very little investment to start rolling over maps and bosses. Due to range and nature of Spark Spark, even content that outstrips your current character or power level can be easily approached at a distance and eliminated. By combining the natural Lightning damage of Spark with Cold damage converted from Call of the Brotherhood Call of the Brotherhood, we also ensure that most enemies are frozen and shattered long before they even have a chance to approach.

Even for less than the sum of 15 Chaos Orb Chaos Orbs our Spark Inquisitor has the damage and the survivability to leap right into the end-game and get farming. The high amount of Life Regeneration and Leech gives the build an extremely comfortable and forgiving feeling, making it relaxing to play and a great choice for players of all levels of experience. Spark Spark is available right after defeating Hillock in Act I, and is a viable and effective leveling choice. This gives newer players a chance to get comfortable with the skill while leveling up and negates any need for build swapping and juggling of gems later on.

Many of the gems and items can be swapped out for alternative options to further empower your damage, or to bolster your defensive capabilities. This level of flexibility is perfect for both challenge leagues and shorter events — such as Flashbacks — as the build can be easily adapted to suit your needs and budget. By the same token, this also makes this build a great choice for Solo Self-Found Leagues and Hardcore, should that be your preference.

Overall, the sheer strength, flexibility, and relaxing pick-up-and-play nature of this build makes it a potent all-rounder that has a seat at the table in virtually any environment.

Playstyle and Build Mechanics

This build clears very quickly and has a lot of natural screen coverage due to the nature of Spark Spark‘s mechanics and performance as a skill. Using Vaal Spark Vaal Spark only furthers your ability to clear without slowing down at all, which makes this build adept at ripping apart maps and generating fat rates of experience per hour.

Even without any special gear or investment we can easily obtain upwards of 10% Life regenerated per second, giving the build a very stable and solid feeling in any situation. Underscoring that is a large amount of Energy Shield Leech, Life Leech, and Life gained on-hit, which feels incredible when paired with the large number of Spark Sparks flying around the screen. In most situations, any incoming damage is immediately healed away, or it fails to penetrate the Energy Shield at all.

Despite the fabulous Energy Shield and Life sustain, it is rare that these defenses need to be relied on at all. Most enemies are immediately frozen and subsequently shattered from the Cold conversion provided by Call of the Brotherhood Call of the Brotherhood. Enemies that survive long enough to inflict damage are usually limited to bosses once this excellent ring has been obtained. A healthy combination of Avoidance and Block Chance serves as further smoothing for any damage. Mind Over Matter can also be easily incorporated if you choose, adding a final layer of defense that is perfect for Hardcore players in particular.

Offensively, this build is quite the powerhouse. Spark Spark has received a slew of buffs over several leagues running and still flies under the radar for many players as a top-tier skill for clearing and bossing alike. By stacking Critical Strike and Multiplier, we rip apart enemies and apply ailments continuously. Power Charges and Consecrated Ground help power up our Critical Strike and damage immensely.

A variety of gear options allow this build to perform at all levels of budget — for example, players that do not have Call of the Brotherhood Call of the Brotherhood can still use The Three Dragons The Three Dragons to gain the massive defensive benefit of freezing the entire screen. While we will discuss the options in detail in the Gear section, this build can be tailor made to suit your preference and your purse.

Passive Skill Tree

This is our recommended Level 100 Passive Skill Tree.

This version of the build offers the most damage possible while still providing you with a fair amount of increased Life and Energy Shield. It can be easily adapted to suit your preferred style of play or objective. For example, a player wanting to farm the Uber Labyrinth might opt for even higher Life Regeneration by putting 4 points into Sanctity and Quick Recovery. Some notables, such as Coordination and Fangs of the Viper, are optional and are only taken for an increase in overall clear speed rather than in the interest of maximum possible damage output. Feel free to replace them with additional damage or Life and Energy Shield to suit your needs.

Mind Over Matter can be incorporated quite easily by taking the keystone and the Inspiration notable behind it. Dreamer should also be picked with Mind Over Matter once Intuitive Leap Intuitive Leap has been implemented. Arcane Will is another notable worth acquiring to help boost your Mana pool. In order to sustain Mind Over Matter you will have to forego running Zealotry Zealotry, however, this is a very worthwhile trade if you are playing on a Hardcore league.

Gems

Vaal Spark Vaal Spark is our main skill, allowing us to use Spark Spark as our primary form of damage and clear while using the active Vaal component whenever available to add additional damage. There are several support gems setups that can enable your build to excel in different areas, but since all of them are Blue, they can easily be swapped in and out should you desire. For stronger enemies, Orb of Storms Orb of Storms is also used to acquire Power Charges and Onslaught to really empower our output.

Several auras can be used, but the core three are Zealotry Zealotry, Herald of Ice Herald of Ice, and Herald of Thunder Herald of Thunder. A golem is also employed to enhance damage or survivability; Summon Lightning Golem Summon Lightning Golem is the best choice for offense, while Summon Stone Golem Summon Stone Golem is ideal for defense. Flame Dash Flame Dash is employed for mobility and as a means of procuring Arcane Surge Support Arcane Surge Support.

An additional Vaal skill can be used, though you have the option of what to employ. Vaal Righteous Fire Vaal Righteous Fire is a good option for damage and bossing, while Vaal Haste Vaal Haste offers the highest overall clear speeds, for example. A standard Cast when Damage Taken Support Cast when Damage Taken Support link is included to reduce bursts of Physical damage and apply a curse of choice.

Vaal Spark Vaal Spark 6-Link

Once you are using Call of the Brotherhood Call of the Brotherhood and Voidwalker Voidwalker, you should replace Pierce Support Pierce Support with Hypothermia Support Hypothermia Support. If you have Voidwalker Voidwalker but not Call of the Brotherhood Call of the Brotherhood, you should use Increased Critical Damage Support Increased Critical Damage Support in the meantime.

Auras 4-Link

Wrath Wrath is an alternative to Zealotry Zealotry that offers roughly the same damage in end-game level gear. Check your character against Path of Building to see what offers more damage, though they are usually within a very close value of each other. One small advantage of Zealotry is it makes your Consecrated Ground against bosses virtually guaranteed, rather than requiring any special positioning or being stationary.

Until you have Enlighten Support Enlighten Support (Level 3 or 4) you will be forced to run only one Herald aura. In general, Herald of Ice Herald of Ice is the stronger and safer option as we are running heavy Critical Strike, the shatter chains help with clear, and you get the Cold damage and chance to freeze even without any special items. If you are not using Enlighten yet, slot in Summon Lightning Golem Summon Lightning Golem or Summon Stone Golem Summon Stone Golem instead.

A final possibility, as a recommendation for maximum damage for end-game geared players using a Warlord's Mark Warlord's Mark ring is to replace Enfeeble Enfeeble (Level 5) with Blood Rage Blood Rage (Level 20) and still use Molten Shell Molten Shell in your other CWDT link.

  • Soul of Arakaali is the best choice for virtually all situations when upgraded if you are using Blood Rage Blood Rage due to the fantastic regeneration it provides.
  • Soul of Solaris is the best choice and should be upgraded if you are not using Blood Rage Blood Rage.

Minor Gods

  • Soul of Tukohama is a great choice when upgraded for most situations, and particularly strong for bossing.
  • Soul of Shakari is a great overall option for most situations, with an upgrade that eliminates Poison as a map affix entirely.

Armour

Helmet

A Rare helmet is the easiest to find an enchantment for and makes it easy to fill out your Resistances. An Energy Shield and/or Armour base are the most ideal. Prioritize stats as follows:

  1. [Uncapped] Elemental Resistances
  2. +# to Maximum Life
  3. Adds # to # Lightning Damage to Spells (Shaped Prefix)
  4. Adds # to # Cold Damage to Spells (Shaped Prefix)
  5. % Increased Energy Shield (Energy Shield Base)
  6. +# to Maximum Energy Shield (Energy Shield Base)

For Unique helms, there are a few options:

Starkonja's Head Starkonja's Head is an excellent helm across the board for all Critical Strike based builds. Offering some Critical Strike, a nice Life roll, and a healthy amount of Evasion, this helmet is overall the most accessible Unique option and is usually easy to find an enchant for.

Lightpoacher Lightpoacher with 2 Abyssal sockets is the best possible helmet for clear speed, however, it is generally very expensive and difficult to find an enchant for.

The Three Dragons The Three Dragons is extremely cheap and available early in the league, providing valuable Freezing which lends a lot of safety to the build until you can upgrade.

Recommended Enchantments for this build are:

  1. Spark Spark fires 3 additional projectiles
  2. 40% increased Spark Spark damage
  3. 30% increased Spark Spark projectile speed

Chest

The Covenant The Covenant is the best cheaply available chest that can be used all the way until Level 100.

Inpulsa's Broken Heart Inpulsa's Broken Heart is an excellent choice for clear.

A very high Energy Shield Vaal Regalia Vaal Regalia is the best possible defensive option for the extreme end-game. Aim for 600+ Energy Shield and solid Resistances before you consider switching to a Rare.

Boots

Voidwalker Voidwalker are the most convenient choice, as they are generally quite cheap once Shaper farm starts on a league and they allow us to drop Pierce Support Pierce Support from our Vaal Spark Vaal Spark 6-Link. Phasing is very convenient for clear speed and safety and these boots have good defensive stats and Movement Speed.

A Rare pair of boots should be used until Voidwalker can be acquired. Prioritize stats as follows:

  1. % Increased Movement Speed
  2. [Uncapped] Elemental Resistances
  3. +# to Maximum Life

Recommended Enchantments for this build are:

  1. Adds 1 to 160 Lightning Damage if you haven’t Killed Recently (Best Bossing)
  2. 16% increased Attack and Cast Speed if you’ve Killed Recently (Best Clear)
  3. 0.6% of Damage Leeched as Life and Mana if you’ve Killed Recently (Best Defense)

Since Spark Spark is “weakest” for single-target, we recommend using the Added Lightning Damage if you plan on farming bosses such as Uber Elder.

Gloves

A Rare pair of Fingerless Silk Gloves Fingerless Silk Gloves is a great choice for a balance between damage and defense. Prioritize stats as follows:

  1. [Uncapped] Elemental Resistances
  2. +# to Maximum Life
  3. % Increased Energy Shield
  4. +# to Maximum Energy Shield
  5. Socketed Gems are Supported by Level # Faster Casting / % Increased Cast Speed

Winds of Change Winds of Change offers a fair damage boost and decent quality of life with the increased projectile speed. If they can be obtained cheaply and early they can be a fairly strong upgrade.

Shadows and Dust Shadows and Dust are the best Unique option for clear speed. This is the ideal end-game choice for damage.

Kalisa's Grace Kalisa's Grace are a cheap option available very early or on Solo Self-Found to create a budget 5-Link for your Spark Spark.

An alternative to Kalisa's Grace Kalisa's Grace is to look for a Rare pair of Shaped gloves with Socketed Gems are Supported by Level # Faster Casting / % Increased Cast Speed and Socketed Gems are Supported by Level # Blind / % Global Chance to Blind Enemies on Hit. Even if you are not able to acquire other ideal stats, such as Maximum Life, this can provide a budget 6-Link early in the league at a bargain price if you are lucky enough to find a pair.

Weapon and Shield

Weapon

A Rare sceptre is the best possible option, with the base being ideally a Void Sceptre Void Sceptre or an Opal Sceptre Opal Sceptre for the implicit effects. Prioritize stats as follows:

  1. % Increased Critical Strike Chance for Spells
  2. % Increased Spell Damage
  3. % Increased Global Critical Strike Multiplier
  4. Gain % of Elemental Damage as Extra Chaos Damage (Shaped Prefix)
  5. % Increased Lightning Damage
  6. Adds # to # Lightning Damage to Spells
  7. Adds # to # Cold Damage to Spells
  8. % Increased Cast Speed

Doryani's Catalyst Doryani's Catalyst is the best overall unique option and can usually be obtained cheaply.

Singularity Singularity is a good budget option when league starting to get you into maps right away.

Cerberus Limb Cerberus Limb is another great budget option but is not always available as early as Singularity Singularity.

Shield

A Rare Spirit Shield should be used, with the ideal bases being Fossilised Spirit Shield Fossilised Spirit Shields and Harmonic Spirit Shield Harmonic Spirit Shields. Prioritize stats as follows:

  1. +# to Maximum Life
  2. % Increased Critical Strike Chance for Spells
  3. % Increased Spell Damage
  4. % Increased Lightning Damage
  5. % Increased Cast Speed
  6. % Increased Area of Effect (Elder Prefix)
  7. +# to Maximum Energy Shield
  8. % Increased Energy Shield

Chernobog's Pillar Chernobog's Pillar is an excellent budget shield that provides good defenses and a little bit of damage.

Accessories

Amulet

Choir of the Storm Choir of the Storm is the absolute best option for this build and provides a massive injection of damage.

A Rare amulet can be used as well, with whatever stats you need to fill in.

Rings

Call of the Brotherhood Call of the Brotherhood should be one of your first pickups when you can afford it. Combined with switching in Hypothermia Support Hypothermia Support in your Vaal Spark Vaal Spark link, this is a huge boost to damage.

Berek's Grip Berek's Grip is a great budget option that is also exceptional for leveling.

A Rare ring should be used in the other slot. An Opal Ring Opal Ring is the ideal base, but any will do. Prioritize stats as follows:

  1. [Uncapped] Elemental Resistances
  2. +# to Maximum Life
  3. % Increased Lightning Damage
  4. Curse Enemies with Level # Warlord's Mark Warlord's Mark on Hit (Elder Suffix)
  5. % Increased Global Critical Strike Chance (Shaped Suffix)
  6. % Increased Global Critical Strike Multiplier (Elder Suffix)
  7. % Increased Damage (Crafted Prefix)
  8. Adds # to # Lightning Damage to Spells (Shaped Prefix)

Critical Strike Chance and Multiplier can also be Essence crafted for the best possible rings but this is often expensive and tedious to craft.

Belt

A Rare Crystal Belt Crystal Belt is the best option in many situations. Prioritize stats as follows:

  1. [Uncapped] Elemental Resistances
  2. +# to Maximum Life
  3. % Increased Lightning Damage (Delve Prefix)
  4. % Increased Damage (Crafted Prefix)
  5. % Increased Life Recovery Rate (Elder Suffix)
  6. +# to Armour

Any Rare belt will do to fill in until a Crystal Belt Crystal Belt can be acquired. Stygian Vise Stygian Vises are also a good choice.

Bisco's Leash Bisco's Leash is generally quite affordable and works well together with Shadows and Dust Shadows and Dust. This is a good option if you are farming for profit.

Jewels

Watcher's Eye Watcher's Eye Options

As with most builds that use classic Auras, a Watcher's Eye Watcher's Eye is going to be your best bet in the late-game. This is not necessary at all for the build and was excluded from any of the damage stats and calculations, simply because it will not be a realistic acquisition for many players.

It is worth swapping from Zealotry Zealotry to Wrath Wrath (or vice-versa) if you obtain a Watcher's Eye Watcher's Eye with one of the recommended mods.

Prioritize Watcher's Eye Watcher's Eye mods as follows:

  1. % increased Critical Strike Chance against Enemies on Consecrated Ground while affected by Zealotry Zealotry
  2. % increased Critical Strike Chance while affected by Wrath Wrath
  3. % increased Lightning Damage while affected by Wrath Wrath
  4. % increased Cast Speed while affected by Zealotry Zealotry
  5. Consecrated Ground you create while affected by Zealotry Zealotry causes enemies to take (8-10)% increased Damage

Unique Jewels

Hazardous Research Hazardous Research is absolutely mandatory and can be acquired from the quest Death to Purity in Act V. Place it in the socket below:

Intuitive Leap Intuitive Leap is a great choice when it can be acquired to help generate free charges and acquire Melding without invest 4 points.

Standard Jewels are preferred over Abyss Jewels and should be prioritized as follows:

Cinderswallow Urn Cinderswallow Urn can replace the Silver Flask, and is particularly good if the Veiled Mod is % Increased Critical Strike Chance during Flask Effect.

Leveling

As a reminder, we have several guides to help you level up a character.

You can acquire Spark Spark immediately in Act I after killing Hillock. Link it with Pierce Support Pierce Support, Arcane Surge Support Arcane Surge Support and Onslaught Support Onslaught Support for now (in order of priority), and add in Added Lightning Damage Support Added Lightning Damage Support and Added Cold Damage Support Added Cold Damage Support as soon as possible.

In order of priority, your links for leveling should be:

  1. Spark Spark / Vaal Spark Vaal Spark
  2. Pierce Support Pierce Support
  3. Controlled Destruction Support Controlled Destruction Support
  4. Spell Echo Support Spell Echo Support
  5. Added Lightning Damage Support Added Lightning Damage Support
  6. Energy Leech Support Energy Leech Support

Make sure to acquire Herald of Ice Herald of Ice and Herald of Thunder Herald of Thunder in Act II, and then Zealotry Zealotry in Act III. Elemental Overload is a great keystone for the first half of the leveling process until you have enough Critical Strike to matter.

FAQ

Why Don’t You Have -% Elemental Resistances or Penetration on any Gear?

The Ascendancy node Inevitable Judgement causes Critical Strikes to ignore enemy Elemental Resistances, and non-criticals to penetrate 10% of Elemental Resistances. This is an amazing keystone but seriously devalues penetration as a stat for us, allowing us to budget a lot more affixes elsewhere and freeing up a flask slot that would otherwise need to be used for The Wise Oak The Wise Oak.

    If you are using The Covenant The Covenant your Spark Spark has blood magic, that’s why the Mana doesn’t move. If you aren’t using that chest you can incorporate Clarity Clarity or take Arcane Will.

    Hi! New in POE.

    First of all, great site!

    I am in act 3 and I have Zealotry, Herald of thunder and Herald of Ice but, because the mana reserverd, (50% Zealotry and 25% each herald) I have 0 mana when all activated. What am I doing wrong?

    Great character design, just a question is it viable to take off potency of will? it frees up 3 skill points and seems to have little effect since most mobs die in one hit anyways. Another question is it viable to get rid of controlled destruction to have a slightly better crit rate and replace it with Iron will? I found that this character ends up with a decent amount of strength anyways and iron will also has a spell damage buff to it.

    for now run zealotry and a herald if you’re not having mana problems. You would run all three skills when you pick up a level 2+ enlightment gem later which decreases the amount of mana reserved.     Thanks for the info Siveriust. I have a Tabula Rasa (dropped in Act 2), so I didn’t buy The covenant. I will wait until get the enlightment gem.

    As it says in the gem link section, unless you are running Enlighten Support Enlighten Support you will be forced to run only a single herald aura.

    Thanks for providing this build. Ever so much fun on SSF currently.

    I’m about level 60 currently and is putting things together. HOWEVER, I cannot see the point of Blood Rage on an elemental build, can you please explain?

    Hello. I like this build, playing SSF right now, already linked The Covenant to 6, and don’t have any issues. But it seems life version of this build lacks damage, is it a good idea to swap into LL later with 6l shavronne’s?

    It’s just a means of generating Frenzy Charges, which increase your cast speed and damage by 4% each.

    With the recommended gear you shouldn’t lack any damage — with the advised gear setup my Uber Elder time was around 2:13. Low-life is definitely higher potential damage but you’ll need better gear which may be difficult to obtain for SSF. That said, stuff like Choir of the Storm Choir of the Storm isn’t exactly attainable either, so you will have a tough decision to make. Unless you have really nice LL gear I’d probably stay Life if you want to continue to level up, as without solid defenses you might get popped a lot more easily on a LL setup.

    nice build – my very first Templar is now 75 :-)

    There seems to be a flaw though with the Ascendancies: in the picture you marked as third “Righteous Providence” (which is necessary to reach “Inevitable Judgement”), but in the text below the third is “Augury of Penitence”. I took it like in the picture, hope it was right.

    After having tried the eternal labyrinth the whole evening at cLvl 78 and died every single time at the third Izaro combat, the similarities between this build and Enki’s Arc Witch are showing even more: I cannot kill a big boss.

    Do I have to wait until I get 90 to do the 4th lab?

    You shouldn’t have to. Damage should be more than sufficient and your range should allow you to do the entire boss without really putting yourself at risk of taking a hit. Could you link me your Path of Building? Maybe I could give you a few pointers on how to adjust the build to make it more suitable at your current power level.

    thx for this nice build. I am a returning player and had to rebuild my now lvl-75 Inquisator. I probably do not understand one thing. All over the description the freeze-effect is noted – like “freezing the entire screen”. I think I rebuild the whole thing, but I literally notice the freeze (and shatter) effect only very rare occasions. The probability on my character screen “Offense” for “freeze” ist 5% for all skills.

    Ah, another question – would you recommend to run with all three auras or only one situation-depend.

    I am enjoying this build a lot. In fact, this is the first build that’s truly allowed me to get into and enjoy PoE, so first of all, thank you very very much for that. Second, I’m not having any explicit issues per-say, however being extremely new to the game, I was wondering if I could link PoB and see if you could give any general insight as to how I could improve what I’ve got going on, and where to go from where I’m at? I don’t mean to be a bother so don’t worry about it if that’s asking for a lot- but thank you for your time in advance! Again, really nice build and very well explained.

    The freezing (and shatter) effect would mostly start to take place when you incorporate Call of the Brotherhood. That’s when I truly noticed it (even with Herald of Ice on).

    As for the second question, if you have the mana/blood magic, using all 3 aura’s would give you the most utility and dps at all times.

    (I’m not Furty of course, but this just comes from my experience with the build. I hope this helped!)

    Hi – going to try with this build – I have managed to pick up a Tabula Rasa on another character – is it preferable to level using this over other Chest armours for this build to utilise the links?
