Storm Call Inquisitor Build Guide (PoE Legion 3.7)

Introduction

The Storm Call Inquisitor is a type of caster that excels at dealing great amounts of elemental damage bursts that penetrate enemies’ elemental resistances. We achieve that by picking up the Inevitable Judgement ascendancy node, which allows us to penetrate enemies’ resistance every time we land a Critical Strike.

Storm Call Storm Call is an area Lightning spell that deals damage after a short duration. The skill has great base Critical Chance, very useful Vaal version and a respectable area coverage.

Build Summary

The build is very budget-friendly with the option to invest into later on. With gear we focus on getting as much Life, Critical modifiers and Spell damage as possible. Carcass Jack Carcass Jack is a great unique Body Armour that increase both of your offense and defense. An Elder-based Ring with Warlord's Mark Warlord's Mark on Hit will allow you to have a reliable source of Life and Mana sustain.

Pros & Cons

Pros

+ Hardcore viable
+ Budget-friendly
+ Fun and active playstyle

Cons

- Cannot do Elemental Reflect

Playstyle

Offensively, dropping one or two casts of Storm Call Storm Call will be enough to obliterate everything in your path. When you encounter a tough foe, Vaal Storm Call Vaal Storm Call will help out with the single target damage by a great deal. An Orb of Storms Orb of Storms gem setup will allow you to gain Power charges on demand.

Defensively, keeping your distance is very important, since the build’s damage mitigation is on the low end. Leeching Life through the Warlord's Mark Warlord's Mark is the main way of sustaining yourself.

For playstyle, having good uptime on your Flasks will ensure you have a decent amount of additional damage output and damage mitigation. Dropping a cast or two upon packs of monsters and moving on via Whirling Blades Whirling Blades or any other mobility skill is what you should be doing. The build can also utilize Vaal Haste Vaal Haste or Vaal Grace Vaal Grace.

Ascendancy, Passive tree, Bandits and Pantheons

Ascendancy (Templar – Inquisitor)

  1. Righteous Providence
  2. Inevitable Judgement
  3. Instruments of Virtue
  4. Augury of Patience

Righteous Providence augments your Critical Strikes by a great deal, making your transition into Critical Strikes easier.

Inevitable Judgement is what the build is all about; ignoring elemental resistances is extremely strong, especially in the endgame.

Instruments of Virtue provides great synergy between your attacks and spells, and with proper playstyle this ascendancy node can be very beneficial.

Augury of Patience provides great balance between offense and defense for the build.

Passive tree

This is the endgame version of the passive tree.

We focus on picking up all the strong Spell Critical nodes, Area nodes, Life and Mana. The build does not use any build-enabling keystone notables, which means you do not have to rush any particular part of the tree and have the freedom to choose between damage and Life on your way up.

Bandits

As in most Critical-based builds, we recommend helping Alira for the additional 20% Critical Multiplier and +15% to all Elemental Resistances. This outweighs the two passive skill points that you will receive by killing all the bandits.

Pantheons

Major: Although all Major Pantheons are beneficial for the build, Soul of Arakaali is the best choice when fully upgraded.

Minor: Same as Major Pantheons, there are many Minor ones that can be used. Choose one based on content you are running and personal preference.

Pantheon powers can be upgraded by using Divine Vessel in the Map Device while you are activating the particular Map that contains the boss you need. Once you’ve killed the boss and captured his soul, you need to deliver the vessel to Sin in Oriath.

Gems

Vaal Storm Call Vaal Storm Call is your signature skill, which should ideally be used in a 6-Link. For mobility, you should use Whirling Blades Whirling Blades and Flame Dash Flame Dash. An Orb of Storms Orb of Storms gem setup allows you to generate Power charges via Power Charge On Critical Support Power Charge On Critical Support. Offensive auras like Wrath Wrath, Zealotry Zealotry and buffs like Herald of Ice Herald of Ice and Herald of Thunder Herald of Thunder have great synergy with the build.

For all the gem links we provide below, keep in mind that we list the gems in order of priority, meaning that if you lack the required number of sockets to fit all the gems, the first ones to drop are the ones at the bottom. Also note that in-game, as long as the sockets are linked, it makes no difference at all what order the gems are placed in.

Storm Call (6-Link)

Storm Call Storm Call is a spell that calls down a lightning in the place you’ve cast after a short duration. In order to make the skill more responsive it is recommended to lower the skill’s duration by using things like Less Duration Support Less Duration Support. The Vaal version of the skill is great for dealing additional single target damage. We recommend one link that works great for both clearing and single target, with the option to swap Spell Cascade Support Spell Cascade Support for Concentrated Effect Support Concentrated Effect Support for bosses if you choose to do so.

  1. Vaal Storm Call Vaal Storm Call
  2. Less Duration Support Less Duration Support
  3. Controlled Destruction Support Controlled Destruction Support
  4. Spell Echo Support Spell Echo Support
  5. Spell Cascade Support Spell Cascade Support
  6. Increased Critical Strikes Support Increased Critical Strikes Support

Whirling Blades (3-Link)

Whirling Blades Whirling Blades will allow you to benefit from the Instruments of Virtue ascendancy node, while also providing the Fortify buff when you hit enemies.

  1. Whirling Blades Whirling Blades
  2. Faster Attacks Support Faster Attacks Support
  3. Fortify Support Fortify Support

Other Gems

Wrath Wrath and Herald of Ice Herald of Ice should be the best combination of offensive buffs; Zealotry Zealotry and Herald of Thunder Herald of Thunder can also be considered. Summon Lightning Golem Summon Lightning Golem provides additional Cast Speed. Steelskin Steelskin should be used for additional damage mitigation.

Gearing

Capping your elemental resistances is essential and it should always be your top priority in any build; it should be the first thing you do when gearing up a character. Obtaining a 6-link, while very powerful and certainly recommended, can potentially be very expensive (requiring an average of 1500 Orbs of Fusing, obviously depending on your luck); as such, this should not really be a goal for you while gearing up, and you should instead settle for a 5-link until you have enough resources.

Helmet

Getting a Helmet with the proper labyrinth enchant can be very beneficial for the build; we are looking for “#% reduced Storm Call Duration”. When it comes to the item itself, you can use any decently rolled rare Helmet, or even uniques like Starkonja's Head Starkonja's Head. The rare affix priority is:

  1. +#% total Elemental Resistances (at least 60)
  2. +# to maximum life (at least 90)
  3. +#% increased maximum life (Pristine Fossil)
  4. +# to Dexterity

Body Armour

Carcass Jack Carcass Jack is a great choice when it comes to Body Armours. A well-rolled rare chest piece can also be very strong. The rare affix priority is:

  1. +#% total Elemental Resistances (at least 80)
  2. +# to maximum life (at least 100)
  3. Spells have +#% to Critical Strike Chance (Shaper Suffix)
  4. #% of Physical Damage taken as Cold Damage (Shaper Prefix)
  5. #% of Physical Damage taken as Lightning Damage (Shaper Prefix)

Gloves

Well rolled rare Gloves are best in slot, ideally you would want Fingerless Silk Gloves Fingerless Silk Gloves for the additional damage. The rare affix priority is:

  1. +#% total Elemental Resistances (at least 60)
  2. +# to maximum life (at least 60)
  3. +# to Dexterity

Boots

Well rolled rare Boots are best in slot. For labyrinth enchant, look for “#% of Damage Leeched as Life and Mana if you’ve Killed Recently” if you do not have your Elder Ring yet, or any other enchant you prefer after you’ve acquired the Ring. The rare affix priority is:

  1. +#% total Elemental Resistances (at least 60)
  2. +# to maximum life (at least 80)
  3. #% increased Movement Speed (at least 25%)

Belt

A well rolled rare Stygian Vise Stygian Vise is a great Belt choice. The rare affix priority is:

  1. +#% total Elemental Resistances (at least 60)
  2. +# to maximum life (at least 80)
  3. #% increased Elemental Damage (Prismatic Fossil)

Amulet

A well rolled rare Amulet should be used. The rare affix priority is:

  1. +#% total Elemental Resistances
  2. +# to maximum life (at least 50)
  3. #% increased Spell Damage
  4. #% to Global Critical Strike Multiplier
  5. #% to Global Critical Strike Chance

Rings

As mentioned earlier, the build would greatly benefit from a Curse on Hit Warlord's Mark Warlord's Mark Elder-based ring. This can be expensive and hard to get early on in a league, you can replace it with running the Curse on Blasphemy Support Blasphemy Support instead until you acquire this specific Ring. The rare affix priority is:

  1. +#% total Elemental Resistances
  2. +# to maximum life (at least 40)
  3. Curse Enemies with Level # Warlord’s Mark on Hit (Elder mod)

Weapon

A well rolled Spell-based Dagger is one of the best weapon choices for the build, simply because it allows you to have both good Spell mods and use Whirling Blades Whirling Blades, which provides a lot of benefits via the Instruments of Virtue ascendancy node. The rare affix priority is:

  1. #% increased Critical Strike Chance for Spells (at least 90%)
  2. #% increased Spell Damage
  3. #% increased Attack Speed (for faster Whirling Blades Whirling Blades)
  4. #% to Global Critical Strike Multiplier

Shield

A well rolled Shield is best in slot. The rare affix priority is:

  1. +#% total Elemental Resistances
  2. +# to maximum life (at least 80)
  3. #% increased Critical Strike Chance for Spells (at least 80%)
  4. #% increased Spell Damage (at least 40%)

Flasks

Diamond Flask is mandatory in every critical-based build. Atziri's Promise Atziri's Promise will provide a lot of damage to the build. The usual instant or half-instant Divine Life flask should be used, ideally you would want to roll it with Bleeding removal (Staunching). Vessel of Vinktar Vessel of Vinktar can also be utilized if you choose to do so. Other utility flasks can be used based on personal preference, we recommend having Basalt Flask for additional defense and a Quicksilver for the additional mobility. You should have Curse and Freeze immunity rolled on your utility flasks.

Be sure to check out our Flask Crafting Guide to learn everything you need to know about how to set up your non-Unique flasks.

Jewels

There are no specific jewels that are required for the build. A Watcher's Eye Watcher's Eye with the specific aura mods can be very powerful, but expensive.

Regular Jewel Affix Priority

  1. #% increased maximum Life
  2. +#% to Critical Strike Multiplier with Lightning Skills
  3. #% increased Spell Damage while holding a Shield
  4. #% increased Area Damage
  5. +#% increased Critical Strike Multiplier for Elemental Skills

Abyssal Jewel Affix Priority

  1. +# to maximum Life
  2. #% chance to gain Onslaught for 4 seconds on Kill
  3. Adds # to # Cold Damage to Spells while holding a Shield
  4. Adds # to # Lightning Damage to Spells while holding a Shield
  5. Adds # to # Cold Damage to Spells
  6. Adds # to # Lightning Damage to Spells
  7. #% to Global Critical Strike Multiplier

Leveling

As a reminder, we have several guides to help you level up a character.

The Storm Call Inquisitor can be leveled with its signature skill since level 12. You can also choose to level with any other spell based on personal preference.

Leveling Trees

The Inquisitor allows for very smooth transition into Critical Strikes from early levels. With this passive skill tree you can be fully invested in Critical Strikes by level 65-70. If you want to be more safe, you can always pick more Life instead and go for Critical Strikes later on.

Useful Leveling Unique Items

As you begin a new character, there are few unique items that can boost your power exponentially. Tabula Rasa Tabula Rasa allows you to have a 6-Linked skill as early as you get the gems. Wanderlust Wanderlust gives a decent movement speed, which will make your leveling that much more efficient. Goldrim Goldrim provides a lot of elemental resistances, this will let you worry less about gearing when approaching certain Act encounters. A simple set of Axiom Perpetuum Axiom Perpetuum can make your leveling experience way easier because of the immense damage these weapons provide.

If you are a new player (or if this is your first character for the league), then note that obtaining these items will be very difficult, if not impossible. They are rare drops, which you can otherwise only acquire if you have saved up currency, so do not focus on them too much, and instead simply look for items that match the affix priorities listed in the gearing section above.

Gem Progression

Using Tabula Rasa Tabula Rasa will allow you to have 6-Link gem setups early on, which is why we show such examples below. If you cannot get Tabula Rasa (or another item with a 6-Link), then simply prioritize the first gems in each link provided below.

In order to acquire gems that are not available to your class as a quest reward, simply ask a friend to buy them off vendors for you, or buy them yourself from Sioasa in The Library in Act III Library.

From level 1, you should use the following link.

  1. Freezing Pulse Freezing Pulse
  2. Onslaught Support Onslaught Support

FAQ

What map mods are impossible to do?

You will one-shot yourself to Elemental Reflect. No Regeneration should be doable as long as you have Warlord's Mark Warlord's Mark applied to enemies.

Conclusion

The Storm Call Inquisitor is a very strong Critical-based elemental caster that has the potential to do well in any type of content.

You will definitely have the damage, as long as you know the fight you will be able to.
