Guide Format

This build guide is split over multiple pages, both to prevent it from getting too long, as well as to help you better find the information you are looking for. In addition to the current page, which presents general information about the build and also contains a Leveling and FAQ section, we have the following pages:

Introduction

The Sweep Slayer swings a two-handed Sword that deals tons of Critical Strike damage around the character. For this particular build we chose Swords, simply because they are extremely efficient when you decide to scale Critical Strikes. Slayer’s Impact and Overwhelm greatly benefit the build with the immense amount of extra damage and area coverage they provide; Headsman allows you to run Physical Reflect maps and deal even more damage to bosses, while Bane of Legends is probably one of the most powerful ascendancy nodes in the game when it comes to fighting tough enemies, simply because it allows you to execute any foe at 20% life.

Build Summary

The build does not require any mandatory items in order for it to work, which is why it is a very good league-starter. Simple unique items like Belly of the Beast Belly of the Beast and Doomsower Doomsower can carry you a long way. The build has the room for improvement and you can heavily invest into gear for great results when it comes to the late-game.

Pros & Cons

Pros

+ Hardcore viable
+ Cheap to start
+ Great clear speed
+ Culls enemies at 20% health

Cons

- Dies to Elemental Reflect (if you choose to do hybrid damage, there is always the option to go full physical with Brutality Support Brutality Support)

Playstyle

Offensively, leaping into packs of monsters with Leap Slam Leap Slam and swinging your Sword with Sweep Sweep will allow you to clear monster packs in very few hits. When you encounter tougher enemies you can place down your Ancestral Warchief Ancestral Warchief for greater single target damage output.

Defensively, you will stun most enemies when hitting them, which is a great defensive mechanic. Having good flask uptime on your defensive flasks will ensure you take way less damage. Sweep’s knock-back will occasionally prevent melee mobs from hitting you. You will reach a decent amount of Life leech via Blood Rage Blood Rage and other Life leech sources.

For playstyle, you should swap between Blood and Sand stance while dealing with bosses or clearing respectively. Dropping down your War Banner War Banner will give you the Adrenaline buff for short duration, which greatly increases your damage output.

Passive Tree

This is what your endgame passive skill tree should look like.

For more information, be sure to check out the Passive Skill Tree page.

Ascendancy, Bandits, and Pantheons

Our Ascendancy, Bandit, and Pantheon Power page goes into detail about all the choices you need to make in these regards.

Gems

We go over all of the gem links this build uses in the end-game on our Gem Link page.

Gear Summary / TL;DR

These items provide a good balance between offense and defense and are enough to deal with the endgame, although there is definitely a room for improvement. Please ensure you read the Gear, Jewels and Flasks page in its entirety.

Our recommendation:

Item Slot Item Name
Head Rare Helmet
Amulet Rare Amulet
Chest Belly of the Beast Belly of the Beast
Gloves Haemophilia Haemophilia
Boots Rare Boots
Belt Rare Belt
Rings Rare Rings
Weapon Rare Two-hand Sword

Leveling

As a reminder, we have several guides to help you level up a character.

The Sweep Slayer can be levelled with its signature skill since level 12, the build is also a decent league-starter.

Leveling Trees

This is the passive tree, which will get you through the levelling content. As in all Critical-based builds, we recommend investing into Critical Strike nodes after level 60.

Useful Leveling Unique Items

As you begin a new character, there are few unique items that can boost your power exponentially. Tabula Rasa Tabula Rasa allows you to have a 6-Linked skill as early as you get the gems. Wanderlust Wanderlust gives a decent movement speed, which will make your leveling that much more efficient. Goldrim Goldrim provides a lot of elemental resistances, and this will let you worry less about gearing when approaching certain Act encounters.

If you are a new player (or if this is your first character for the league), then note that obtaining these items will be very difficult, if not impossible. They are rare drops, which you can otherwise only acquire if you have saved up currency, so do not focus on them too much, and instead simply look for items that match the affix priorities listed in the gearing section above.

Gem Progression

Using Tabula Rasa Tabula Rasa will allow you to have 6-Link gem setups early on, which is why we show such examples below. If you cannot get Tabula Rasa (or another item with a 6-Link), then simply prioritize the first gems in each link provided below.

In order to acquire gems that are not available to your class as a quest reward, simply ask a friend to buy them off vendors for you, or buy them yourself from Sioasa in The Library in Act III Library.

FAQ

What map mods are impossible to do?

You will die to Elemental Reflect, you can choose to go full Physical but you will lose a lot of damage if you drop some Elemental damage sources like Taste of Hate Taste of Hate or items with “% of Physical Gained as Extra X Element”

How to deal with the Mana issues since we do not have any Mana leech on the passive tree?

You will save some passive tree points by picking up a Jewel, Amulet, Gloves or Rings with Mana leech, a single item (around .2%) will be enough to cover your Mana needs.

Conclusion

The Sweep Slayer has the tools to clear areas very fast by swinging a two-handed weapon around his body. The build also very easily deals with tough single targets with Bane of Legends’ execution effect at 20% monster Life.
