Ultimate Cyclone Slayer Build Guide - Slay the Stars (PoE Ultimatum 3.14)

Introduction

Cyclone Cyclone is a perennial powerhouse that immediately asserted itself as one of the staple skills in the melee metascape on its inception. Slayer also received a few redesigned keystones, and is now one of the perfect pairings for crit-based melee builds. Despite a few tweaks in recent patches Cyclone Cyclone remains — not only viable — one of the most potent melee end-game builds available. The result of many leagues of careful build chemistry is a Cyclone Cyclone build of monstrous proportions. With the ability to melt any content in a matter of moments, our Crit-Based Cyclone Slayer is doubtless one of the strongest overall melee builds to ever grace Path of Exile.

Uber Awakener

No content is out of reach for this build. With 9000 or more effective Life, increased maximum Resistances, tons of Armour, and more, this build is not lacking in defense. It is always a great time to play Cyclone Cyclone, and this is the most overpowered way to do it. Our Crit-Based Cyclone Slayer is a truly unstoppable force that is the perfect candidate to fulfill any task.

Since Patch 3.11 Harvest League, Cyclone Cyclone no longer grants stun immunity and Starforge Starforge was heavily nerfed. This prompts us to changed our Ascendancy path and switch over to Atziri's Disfavour Atziri's Disfavour as our early game weapon, later transitioning to a Rare Exquisite Blade Exquisite Blade for maximum damage when our bank has been built up. In 3.14 Ultimatum League the build has no significant changes in power or pathing.

Build Assessment

Pros

+ Absurd damage potential — can basically scale indefinitely with enough currency

+ Excellent clear speed — one of the S-Tier melee builds

+ Solid all-round defenses — excellent Level 100 candidate

+ Melts bosses in the blink of an eye

+ Crit-based build with incredible scaling (~88% Crit Chance in top-end gear)

+ All map mods are possible (except no regeneration), immune to reflect

+ Strongest way to play Cyclone Cyclone in the end-game

Cons

Not a good Cyclone Cyclone build for beginners — knowledge of how to upgrade a character and quickly generate currency is very helpful

Expensive to achieve top-end gear, depending on the popularity and availability of items

Cyclone Cyclone can be a polarizing skill — careful movement is necessary for dangerous enemies

Path of Building and Furty’s Character

Make sure you are using the Path of Building Community Fork to include Impale DPS in the calculations.

You can find the Ultimate Cyclone Slayer’s Path of Building information here.

We use the Path of Building Community Fork for all of our builds, which is highly recommended. If you are encountering errors importing the build, please ensure you are using the Community Fork.

You can also find a link to Furty’s personal character for this build — last played in the 3.10 Delirium challenge league — by clicking here.

Playstyle and Build Mechanics

Cyclone Cyclone is a very simple and straightforward skill. Now a channeled ability, your character spins around and attacks extremely quickly — technically it is considered a movement skill, although it slows your character. By stacking a lot of damage, Critical Strike Chance and Multiplier, Attack Speed, Impale, and Movement Speed, our Cyclone Slayer glides effortlessly through maps while shredding packs and bosses alike.

This is an exclusively Physical damage build, which makes it relatively easy to itemize for early on. As you start to become more ambitious with armour acquisitions, gear can become a little more difficult and/or expensive to obtain — after all, crit items are highly sought after for many builds. Fortunately, many of the items can be crafted yourself, and for only a few Exalted Orb Exalted Orbs you outfit yourself with extremely strong items.

Simply enter a map, Leap Slam Leap Slam into a pack, and Cyclone Cyclone through it to blow it to pieces.

Leveling

As a reminder, we have several guides to help you level up a character.

Start out with Ground Slam Ground Slam, which you should use until Level 12, when Sunder Sunder can be acquired. Sunder is a fairly potent leveling skill due to its high base damage and ease of use. Your Sunder links, in order of priority, are:

  1. Sunder Sunder
  2. Melee Physical Damage Support Melee Physical Damage Support
  3. Onslaught Support Onslaught Support
  4. Multistrike Support Multistrike Support
  5. Maim Support Maim Support
  6. Ruthless Support Ruthless Support

Just use what you can get until the gems become available — Maim Support Maim Support and Ruthless Support Ruthless Support are available very early, along with Onslaught Support Onslaught Support, but you will have to wait until Act II for Melee Physical Damage Support Melee Physical Damage Support. Added Fire Damage Support Added Fire Damage Support is an option in the meantime, if you are using a Tabula Rasa Tabula Rasa.

Blood and Sand Blood and Sand is available right at Level 4, and should be picked up immediately. Acquire Herald of Ash Herald of Ash and Herald of Purity Herald of Purity in Act II to help you level up. You can get Pride Pride in Act III after doing Lost in Love and drop Herald of Purity Herald of Purity.

Cyclone Cyclone can honestly be used as soon as you can sustain it (e.g. using a ring such as Thief's Torment Thief's Torment, but we recommend waiting until the latter part of the leveling process, or even after finishing Kitava. If you are league starting, you will probably want to do a little mapping before making the full switch, as Cyclone Cyclone is a relatively weak skill until it gets a bit of scaling behind it.

FAQ

Which Anointments are Best for my Amulet?

As with all anointment advice, you can make a variety of different choices depending on how you want to tailor your build. Consider these recommendations:

  • Fatal Blade — Our default recommendation for pure damage performance if using Swords.
  • Vitality Void — Expensive, but a great option for increasing leech to the maximum. Recommended if you forget to keep Blood Rage Blood Rage active on bosses sometimes.
  • Discipline and Training — Big boost to survivability and maximum life.

Why Do You Take Point Blank on the Tree?

Should only be used with Soul Tether Soul Tether and Glorious Vanity Glorious Vanity in niche setups.

I’m Having Mana Issues

Make sure you have the crafted affix -# to Total Mana Cost of Skills on both your rings. If you do not have those affixes, you will need to disable one of your auras and acquire % of Physical Attack Damage Leeched as Mana on one of your gear pieces (recommended: Gloves).

I Can’t Afford Atziri's Acuity Atziri's Acuity. Should I take Vaal Pact on the Tree?

This is a complicated question, because it largely depends on you, your gear, what league you are playing on, and your priorities as a player.

If you already have Glorious Vanity Glorious Vanity and have specced into Corrupted Soul, we recommend pathing to Vaal pact (3 point investment). If you have not yet done this, the answer is a lot murkier, as it is a 5 point investment from Golem’s Blood, and you will have to decide for yourself.

everyone got the same problem! :D

I noticed that the big difference is in the string “MH total more”. I (we?) got only ~270% instead of ~3420%.

    Hope this will help Furty.

Loving the build, was using a 5l starforge into red maps and now Im just finishing off the craft on a 6l sword. With the mana reduction gear and a 6l, I still cant get the mana on cyclone down to 0. Unless Im using the wrong mana enchants I dont think you can get the cost down to 0. Are gloves the best option for mana steal still then?

In a previous post you stated, “We only use the Vaal active, not the aura Haste or Grace “. I’m 71 years old and sorry to say I don’t know what Vaal active means:( Please explain. Is it in the tree?

Thank you so much, I feel relieved now :)

Actually the build I accidentally followed was the one made by vvckd. (https://www.poe-vault.com/guides/ultimate-cyclone-slayer-build-guide)

My question is do you think it’s a good build to follow ? Yours looks more complete that’s why I ask !

Thanks again for you work and answer.

Either build is fine. Mine is a little more late-game oriented, as my playstyle and builds tend to orient more around slaying the toughest bosses and pushing the limits as much as possible. Vvckd’s build is also fine, and his “Axe” version is a lot easier to league start since it doesn’t rely on Critical Strike.

This patch I get 2190%, although less if I remove the Close Combat Support Close Combat Support calculation. Mainly this comes from a custom Jewel that adds calculations for Impale, Pride, Bane of Legends, and Shock from Focus. Since POB can’t calculate these things by default you are likely seeing far less damage than you are actually capable of doing, although upwards of 40 million is still pretty unrealistic without true top tier gear and a little bit of ramp up time (such as you might get in a Blight).

With Devoto's Devotion Devoto's Devotion and standard clearing gear I would say 10 million DPS is a very realistic number in solid end-game gear with some decent jewels.

All Vaal gems include two skills instead of one; the “standard” skill, and a Vaal version. For example, Vaal Grace Vaal Grace provides the Grace Grace skill, which is a permanent aura, but it also provides a second skill, which doesn’t reserve any Mana and can be activated on demand (with a short cooldown period). Check the wiki for Vaal Skills if you need a more in-depth explanation as many Vaal skills function differently depending on whether they are auras or skill gems.

Long story short, you only use the gem in this build for the Vaal skill, not the aura itself.

I’ll look at adding a pastebin to the build next week but typically we haven’t provided them, simply because they are extremely time consuming to maintain and ensure the information within matches the information in the guide. This build is of particular annoyance since so much of the damage has to be manually implemented into POB (Pride, Dread Banner, Bane of Legends, Cull, Impale, Close Combat if you are using it, and so on).

Are you guys clear on how to implement these mechanics into POB? One thing we could even look at creating is a guide on how to correctly use this tool, as it is pretty esoteric information and really confusing when considering builds such as this one!

    Hi Furty !

Many thanks for the guide. As a newcomer to PoE (it’s my second league) I also would find very useful if you could share a PoB even though I’ve understood how time consuming it can be to keep it updated.

Maybe one with “just” the gems to caculate the real DPS ? It’s really hard for a newbie to understand all the calculations. I hope that Pride has been fixed on PoB, but I’m not sure of my formula for Impale, let alone Glorious Vanity…

    I would also have 3 questions :
    - with the lvl 88 tree, even with a max roll on dex on Devoto’s Devotion we get 148 dex and 155 is required for gems (Impale, Phase Run and Blood Rage). What would be the best between use one skill point for 10 dex in the tree, try to get it on an item or not lvl up these gems above lvl 17 ? The skill point maybe ?
    - also is War Banner really better than Dread Banner for the build ? From my calculation we get 80% chance to impale (40% gem + 40% from tree) without Dread Banner, and it would be 100% with it.
    - are the 3 points spent for life regen in the tree (making 4.4% per sec) enough for survivability or is it mandatory to have a Life flask that we may have to use against bosses ?

Thanks a lot again for your hard work and for sharing it with us !

waiting on mana cost update the -3 channeling rings are not enough. is dropping the kaoms chest a good idea for a rare chest with good stats and -15mana cost? I see the 1 handers use maim also in the chest is that usable and how would you implement it if it was? ty

Come on everyone not saying mana cant be covered by the new channeling skill i have -3 on 1 ring only to take it down to 8 mana this is backed up by a mana leach line in one of my jewels this is more than enough to keep you spinning but if your trying to spin from the start to the end of the map your doing it wrong :)

hello, i’m bad at english so there may be a mistake
i got almost every gear except rings and i’m having mana issue
my seven-link elder blade makes my cyclone 12cost but due to the change in mana cost reduce modifier i can’t make my cyclone free
i’m now using pride, flesh and stone-maim support, war banner (88%used) and use mana leech in jewel to sustain mana but it is sometimes dangerous(my useable mana pool is about 80)
should i drop war banner or aura?
or should i change my cyclone support to reduce mana support?

and i got fortify in elder blade and endurance charge in elder boots
what gem should i use in leap slam link? (now i’m using vaal ancestal warchief)
