Since the launch of Patch 0.3.0, Reddit is being flooded with all kinds of tips, tricks, feedback, and complaints. Now, a new but useful Reddit post has surfaced, where players warn each other about the risks of using Desecrate while crafting. The skill can overwrite existing mods on an item, even replacing a higher roll with a weaker one. For players mid-campaign, that can mean losing an important DPS stat on a weapon.
How Desecrate Works Right Now
- If your item already has 6 affixes, Desecrate removes one at random and replaces it.
- The mod pool includes affixes that are already on the item, so you can overwrite something valuable.
- Example: a hybrid +Phys% mod can get replaced by a weaker +Phys% from the desecration.
In Path of Exile 1, crafting systems like bench mods or veiled mods usually blocked duplicate affixes. Right now in PoE2, that protection does not exist, which is why many players feel the mechanic is confusing or even bugged.
Ways To Avoid Bricking Your Item
The community has shared a few methods to make Desecrate less risky:
- Avoid full-affix items unless you are willing to gamble.
- Craft with fewer mods first, then build up.
- Use Omens that guarantee a prefix or suffix when Desecrating.
- Think of Desecrate as acting like a Chaos Orb. It can roll you something better, but you can just as easily lose what you had.
Why Players Are Concerned
For long-time players, overwriting an affix with the same type feels off compared to how crafting worked in PoE1. For newer players, it can be even harsher, since the game makes it look like you are “adding” a new mod when in reality you are removing one.
Many are now asking for clearer UI or changes that stop duplicate affixes from appearing in the roll pool. Until then, if you are crafting with Desecrate, be careful.
