Strengths and Weaknesses
- Smooth Mapping Experience
- Simple to play
- Extremely durable at high investment
- Minion AI currently has some issues
- Requires constant ability use
- Relies on on-death explosions for clear speed
Build Mechanics
The Lich Raging Spirit build spams low-level Flame Wall to summon
Raging Spirits, and the
Energy Barrier support to rapidly and consistently regenerate Energy Shield at a hilariously rapid rate. Using Chaos Inoculation also provides total immunity to Chaos Damage, as well as Bleed and Poison. It also leverages Rupture the Soul from its ascendancy and a
Despair aura (through
Blasphemy support) to cause enemies to explode in a burst of chaos damage on death. Automated weapon swapping tech gives you a large damage boost, allowing a second ground-based curse to help boost damage, for more difficult encounters such as league content or unique Bosses.
Skill Rotation
Map Clear Skill Rotation
While clearing maps, you will constantly cast Flame Wall to summon your
Raging Spirits and improve the chance that
Energy Barrier will trigger when you are hit. Otherwise, you will use some of your other skills to boost your damage against more durable targets. Below you will find the use cases for each of your abilities:
- Cast
Flame Wall constantly while anything is on screen. This is both your offensive and defensive tool.
- Cast
Voltaic Mark on Rare or Unique enemies
- Cast
Pain Offering and
Flammability for even more damage if needed
- If you have very good gear you may be able to use
Blink to move around faster or dodge dangerous enemy effects
Boss/League Mechanic Skill Rotation
Execute the steps below to optimize damage against bosses.
- First Cast
Flammability in the center of the boss arena
- Start Spamming
Flame Wall
- When the Boss becomes targetable Cast
Voltaic Mark and
Pain Offering
- Continue Spamming
Flame Wall, reapplying
Voltaic Mark and
Pain Offering when needed
Gameplay Tips
Due to the Ascendancy Node Necromantic Conduit, you will want to try to keep your Mana above 35% at all times. Because you will be using a very low-level Flame Wall, this should be easy most of the time, but may require you to use your Mana Flask after casting your more expensive spells.
As your primary damage source comes from Raging Spirits, you can consistently choose where your minions are. This is a very significant difference from more traditional minion builds, and means you will need to make sure you are constantly casting to make sure your minions are where you need them.
After casting your Flammability it is important to immediately return to casting
Flame Wall to swap back to Weapon Set 1, and get your
Raging Spirits summoned quickly.
You will find that as long as you are casting Flame Wall actively, the
Energy Barrier will keep you alive in situations that would prove deadly to most other characters. You do have to be very careful of ground-based degeneration effects (such as Burning Ground), as these will never trigger your rapid regeneration.

Skill and Support Gems
The Active Skills used in this build all fill a supportive role, either cursing the enemies to increase their damage taken or providing powerful buffs to your minions. Remember to leave your Flame Wall at level 3-5 as leveling it up only increases the mana cost without providing any noticeable power to your build.
The following Support Gems are listed in order of socket priority for each Skill.

Spirit Gems
As a Minion-focused build, you will want to acquire as much Spirit as possible. You will want to acquire a Terracotta Soldier spectre from the Lost City in the underground of Act 2. NOTE: There are multiple variants; you will specifically want the one that only costs 10 spirit; they are the clay soldiers that only come to life when you get close. We use one of these to boost the damage gained from Muster support on our primary damage minions. It may take a few attempts to find one.
This build utilizes a Tamed Beast for some very powerful and important modifiers that dramatically boost your damage. To find the correct Beast, follow the steps below:
- Travel to the Infested Barrens in Act 3 Cruel
- Locate the Troubled Camp encounter (It will have a Checkpoint, Merchant and 2 Rare Beasts)
- Before the Rare Beasts die, disable all damage dealing minions
- Check the modifiers on specifically the Boar beast
- If it does not have the correct modifiers, enter the pause menu and Respawn at Checkpoint. This will cause the Rare Beasts to reroll their modifiers and allow you to check them again
- If it DOES have the correct modifiers, cast
Tame Beast on it and kill it before the debuff expires
You can spend as much time as you want “fishing” for the perfect 4 Modifier beast, but there are only 2 Modifiers that are REQUIRED for this build to perform as expected. They are:
- All Damage Ignites
- Haste Aura
Outside of these 2 Modifiers you can choose to continue fishing for additional defensive or offensive modifiers to your own taste, but getting more than those 2 Modifiers is not required and will just be a nice bonus.
Here is a list of the minions you will want to summon based on priorities:
- 1x
Skeletal Storm Mage Shock Bot
- 1x
Bind Spectre: Terracotta Soldier
- 1x
Skeletal Cleric
- 1x
Tamed Beast (with All Damage Ignites and Haste Aura)
- 2x
Skeletal Warrior (Free from Rattling Sceptre)
The following Support Gems are listed in order of socket priority for each Skill.
NOTE: Each skill needs to be assigned to a specific weapon set as noted underneath it.

Ascendancy
The Lich Ascendancy provides you with some very powerful tools. Rupture the Soul causes enemies killed in your presence to regularly explode in a burst of Chaos Damage, speeding up your clear. Dominion over Flesh allows your to apply an additional Curse, as well as allowing all curses to be applied to Curse Immune enemies. Necromantic Conduit gives you additional chaos damage to help improve your damage, and Crystalline Phylactery provides a flexible jewel socket that doubles the power of the modifiers on the jewel socketed in it, and will be used once a suitably high-value jewel is acquired. This can add significant defense, offense, or both!
Here is a list of the ascendancy points you will take, and in which order. If you need some tips or tricks for Ascending, check out our Trial of the Sekhemas and Trial of Chaos guides.
- Necromantic Conduit
- Rupture the Soul
- Crystalline Phylactery
- Dominion over Flesh
Passive Skill Tree, PoB, and Venom Draughts.
The passive tree for this build utilizes weapon set passive points to leverage their power to boost the duration, area and effect of our Flammability curse.
Weapon Set Passive Trees are acquired as you play through the campaign. They allow you to take up to 24 of your total passive points and place them twice, once for your Weapon Set 1, and another for your Weapon Set 2. You can choose to assign points to a weapon set in the top right corner of your Passive Skill Tree window instead of assigning them to your “general” passive tree.
Jewels
The beneficial affixes for Jewels are listed below, ranked in order of importance. As soon as you can afford it, the Prism of Belief Unique Jewel will always be the largest damage increase you can get in a single jewel slot, even at +1 level. Try to buy a +2 or +3 Prism of Belief for Raging Spirits as soon as possible. Prioritize Rare Jewels with 2 prefixes and 2 suffixes from the list below:
- Prefixes
- % increased Energy Shield
- Minions deal % increased Damage
- % increased Energy Shield Recharge Rate
- Suffixes
- Minions have % increased Attack and Cast Speed
- % increased Cast Speed
- % increased Mana Regeneration Rate
Venom Draughts, Titan Medallion, and Quest Rewards
Throughout the Campaign, you will be provided with some quest rewards where you are required to make a choice. Here are the optimal options for each:
- Titan Medallion 1 – 30% increased Charm Charges gained
- Venom Crypt 1 – 25% increaed Mana Regeneration rate
- Titan Medallion 2 – 30% increased Charm Charges gained

Path of Building
Path of Building is a fantastic community-made tool that lets you see how any change you make to your character’s skill tree, gear, or skill gems will impact you. If you haven’t used POB before, you can find a useful beginner’s guide here.
Included in the POB below are some cheaper variants of this build if you’d like to play it before you have a little currency to spend and are lower level. Check the notes section in the POB for more details.
Gear
Below, we’ve included a gear table with a guide on what affixes you should pursue. Many fields are empty or only have 1-2 affixes listed. This is due to the adaptive nature of gear in Path of Exile 2. While each of the listed affixes is very important, making sure you have the required attributes (Strength, Dexterity, and Intelligence) as well as capping your Resistances are goals you must achieve for the build to function properly.
We are using a Rattling Sceptre in our main hand to give us a target for our Pain Offering, and our offhand is the Sunsplinter unique buckler introduced in 0.2.0. This unique provides between 1-3 additional levels to All Fire Skills. Before getting Sunsplinter you will use Carrion Calling.
Equipment Slot and Base Stats | Prefixes | Suffixes |

Socketables
There are a multitude of socketable items (Runes, Soul Cores, Talismans) that can grant additional bonuses when socketed into your gear. You can add additional sockets (up to a maximum) to each gear piece by using Artificer’s Orbs. You should use these sockets to help fix resistances or attributes, or to boost the Evasion or Energy shield of your gear.
If possible, socketing Iron Runes into your Helm and Body Armour will provide the largest defensive bonus, so if you have the option to socket a required resistance or attribute rune into Gloves or Boots or your Shield, that is the more optimal choice.
With the introduction of sockets on Sceptres, you now have some added power available. It is recommended that you add a socket to your Sceptre and insert one or more of these Talismans
- Primate Talisman – Allies in your Presence deal 30% increased Damage
- Serpent Talisman – Allies in your Presence have 8% increased Attack Speed
Another notable Talisman is the Ox Talisman which can be socketed in your Boots to provide 20% increased Presence area. If you have resistances and Attributes covered this can help boost the area in which your Sceptre and other presence effects will be active
Flasks and Charms
Flask Affixes
- Life Flask – Chaos Inoculation means Life Flasks serve no purpose
- Mana Flask
- % of Recovery applied Instantly
- Gains X Charges per Second
Charms
Charms in order of priority:
- Thawing Charm
- Stone Charm
- Gold Charm
