Introduction

The Entangle Plant-Caster is an incredibly enjoyable build. Fantastic all-around in single target, clear, and utility, this build starts with 0 currency in campaign and scales fantastically with crit modifiers using an Effigy of Cruelty while wielding a staff at the same time.

This build focuses primarily on spamming Entangle with Thrashing Vines for additional single target. Thunderstorm creates a cloud for a duration that rains down and “Overgrows” these two abilities, greatly improving their damage and also spawning explosive purple flowers via Accelerated Growth.

Strengths and Weaknesses

Strengths
  • Low-budget start.
  • Great all-around in single target, clear, and utility.
  • All enemies perma-slowed by 90%.
Weaknesses
  • Only two buttons.

Build Mechanics

Our main skill in this build is Entangle and the goal is cast as fast as possible to create as many Accelerated Growth flowers as possible that explode for massive physical damage. We create these flowers by “Overgrowing” our Entangle casts with Thunderstorm, which you should maintain for both clearing and single target. You do NOT need to alternate these skills, just make sure your Entangle casts touch your Thunderstorm to spawn Accelerated Growth flowers.

For Bosses or tanky Rares, we also maintain Thrashing Vines. These can either be self-casted for more dps or automated with Cast on Critical as I’ve done here for more ease-of-play.

Skill Rotation

Follow the basic skill rotation below to progress through the campaign and clear groups of enemies in maps as well as single-target.

  1. Spam Entangle
  2. Maintain Thunderstorm to empower it
  3. Keep Thrashing Vines up for tanky rares and bosses if self-casting

Skill and Support Gems

IMPORTANT: Read Weapon Set Passive Section below this aswell!

This Entangle Disciple of Varashta build uses the following Skill Gems and Support Gems, listed in order of socket priority Top->Down Left->Right.

Thrashing Vines is socketed into Cast on Critical for my current setup purely to remove an extra button press. If you want to cast it manually you can instead slot in Prolonged Duration II over Efficiency II. Then swap in Blasphemy over Cast on Critical with Enfeeble Ritualistic Curse Magnified Area II for extra defense.

This setup requires 30 additional spirit from ideally your amulet, however you can also get the extra spirit from a body armor or staff prefix.

Weapon Set Passive Assignments

IMPORTANT: This Leveling Build takes full advantage of the incredibly powerful Weapon Set Passive Mechanic, not doing so can result in a loss of double to upwards of triple DPS.

This mechanic may seem scary at first but it is incredibly simple; to assign a weapon set passive simply open your passive tree and click the arrow in the top-right hand corner of the screen, then click to allocate a passive as its corresponding weapon set passive. You can also do this at the respec vendor in town while respecing passive points to swap already allocated points into weapon set points.

Red Passives = Weapon Set 1
Green Passives = Weapon Set 2

If you do not have enough weapon set passives for where you are in the tree then assign Weapon Set 1 Passives with regular skill points and forgo Weapon Set 2 Passives, assigning them as you unlock more weapon set passive points throughout the campaign.

Weapon Set Passive Skill Assignments

To Assign Skills to be used with specific weapon sets simply press G to open your gem menu, click the -> arrow next to a skill then click the tick boxes at the bottom of the sheet to assign to either 1, 2, or both.

Entangle Weapon Set 1 ONLY
Cast on Critical Set 1 ONLY
Thunderstorm Set 2 ONLY
Convalescence on BOTH
Mana Remnants Set 2ONLY


Ascendancy

Disciple of Varashta is the recommended ascendancy for this build and is the best choice. The Critical Strike Chance gained is massive, and defensives are solid. Oracle or Blood Mage are also viable ascendency choices, however you will have to edit the passive tree accordingly yourself.

Disciple of Varashta

  1. Instruments of Power – You can equip a Focus while wielding a Staff 50% reduced bonuses gained from Equipped Focus. – Incredibly powerful and useable on all caster architypes. This node behaves very strangely and actually causes numbers to round up, so a +2 focus will be the same as a +1 focus.
  2. The Forth Teaching – 40% more Energy Shield Recharge Rate while on Low Energy Shield
    -1 second to base Energy Shield Recharge delay.
  3. Sacred Rituals – 60% of your current Energy Shield is added to your Armour for
    determining your Physical Damage Reduction from Armour.
  4. Barya of Navira + Navira’s Well: Grants two skills, one which immediately begins your energy shield recharge and another that grants mana regen and a dome-shaped bubble that prevents some damage. The dome is not to be relied on, however instantly starting your Energy Shield Recharge is very useful and should be used frequently.

Passive Skill Tree and PoB – Level 85+

This Tree is the Chaos Innoculation Keystone version, which sets your maximum life to 1, but makes you immune to chaos damage. You should aim to have at an absolute minimum of 5,500 energy shield before allocating this keystone, Ideally 6,500+. Level 85 about is a good level to swap over. Campaign Buffs

Quest rewards during the campaign offer a selection of buffs to your character. Choose the following buffs for the build:

  • Valley of the Titans Altar
    • 30% Increased Charm Charges Gained or 30% Increased Charm Duration. Personal Choice.
  • Venom Draught
    • Increased Stun Threshold
  • Halls of The Dead:
    • +5 Int / +5 Str / +5% Cold Resistance
  • Abandoned Prison:
    • 30% Increased Mana Recovery From Flasks
  • Qimah:
    • Personal Choice, But I always take 3% Movement Speed
