Entangle is a versatile spell that is great all-around in utility, clear, and single target. Slotting in
Accelerated Growth support causes
Entangle to grow flowers along its fissures when “Overgrown” (watered) with
Thunderstorm that explode dealing physical damage after a short duration. Later on you pick up
Thrashing Vines for additional single target and cruise through the campaign as a physical-based nature-caster.
This Path of Exile 2 leveling guide is not only strong for league starters and new characters, requiring minimal gear and no budget; it’s also a fantastic setup for newer players to PoE2 because you keep the same playstyle from act 1 all the way to Tier 15 maps!
Strengths and Weaknesses
- Solid clear, single target, and utility.
- Ranged playstyle with powerful slows.
- Varashta offers a great all-round league start package.
- Damage will clear most content in the game very comfortably but struggle with the strongest possible mapping strategies.
Ascendancy
Select your first Ascendancy after completing the Trial of the Sekhemas in Act 2. The trial is not difficult, so complete it within the level range of 20-30. Your Ascendancy choice is not permanent and can be changed later but should be made with your endgame build in mind!
Disciple of Varashta is the recommended ascendancy for this build and is a great choice for newer players because of its all-round power and strong defensive package.
Disciple of Varashta
- Instruments of Power – You can equip a Focus while wielding a Staff, 50% reduced bonuses gained from Equipped Focus. Incredibly powerful and useful on all caster archetypes. Notably, if you have a “+1 to Level of all Spell Skills” affix on your focus during the campaign, this rounds up and provides you the vast majority of the damage potential on your focus.
- Varashta’s Intuition – 100% of Elemental Damage is taken from Mana before Life. Great for enhancing your early health pool. Be mindful of the toll this can take on your mana bar, and remember to upgrade and use your mana flasks as required!
- Barya of Navira + Navira’s well – Grants two skills, one which immediately begins your energy shield recharge and another that grants mana regeneration and a dome-shaped bubble that prevents some damage. The dome is not particularly reliable, however instantly starting your es recharge is very useful and should be used frequently as required.
General Leveling Advice
Path of Exile II’s campaign can be quite difficult starting out, but ranged casters can make early levels a breeze. The most important thing by far in the early campaign is to CHECK VENDORS FOR GOOD EARLY GEAR.
Look for the following gear from vendors:
- Staves, Wands, and Focus with a priority on stats in order of:
– +# to Level of All Spells or Physical Spells
– #% Increased Spell damage or #% Increased Spell Physical Damage - Any Amulet with +# to Level of All Spell Skills
- Boots with #% increased movement speed
- Any gear with Maximum Life, Resistances, or good energy Shield and Maximum Life.
Regal Orbs or Orbs of Augmentation can be used on these items that you find as magic. If you cant find pieces from 1 or 2 buy them off the trade site using exalts.
Vendor bad magic or rare items you don’t need for gold, do NOT disenchant anything besides white items with sockets if you’d like.
Try to maintain a level of 2-3 levels below the zone level you are currently in for optimal experience.
Sorceress Leveling Passive Tree
You can follow along with the leveling tree on the below planner tool, showing you exactly what to take at each new level.
Act 1
You’ll take some early damage nodes at Raw Power, Potent Signs, and Practiced Incantation to give you the necessary spell damage and cast speed to smoothly clear the first Act.
We’ll take some early strength on our attribute nodes to allow us to use the required number of red support gems with our skills.
Act 2
In early Act 2 you’ll pick up the powerful Wildsurge Incantation keystone, which gives your plant spells 50% more damage and 50% less cost, in exchange for making them last 1/4 their regular duration. You get around the downside of this by spamming Entangle casts in maps and single-target, resulting in a smooth clear pattern.
From there we head down to the powerful physical damage and plant cluster at Boundless Growth, which gives our plants a 20% chance to overgrow by default without needing watered by Thunderstorm. We also take Constricting for a large chunk of damage and to make our Entangle slows more powerful.
Act 3
We’ll pick up a trio of great damage options in the next plant cluster. Dangerous Blossom gives a great extra damage bonus, Proliferating Weeds gives our Entangle skill +1 to its max fissure limit, and Return to Armour lets our Thrashing Vines break more armour on single-target fights. Then we take the opposite spell area damage at Reverberation.
Then we shore up our cast speed, starting to pick up Erraticism, Hastening Barrier, and Spiral Into Mania. If you’ve gotten some lucky energy shield drops, you may opt to skip one of these and instead take Pure Energy and Dampening Shield for a substantial boost to your maximum ES.
Act 4 and Beyond
With all that cast speed, our mana sustain might need some help, so we’ll go up to the Touch of the Arcane cluster which gives us access to the powerful Arcane Surge buff, providing a generous increase to cast speed along with 20% more mana regeneration rate, boosted up to 24% by the cluster notable. If you’ve been lucky and dropped a decent jewel with one or more useful affixes like spell damage, critical modifiers, increased energy shield etc. we can pick up our first jewel socket by this cluster.
Now that we have good uptime on Arcane Surge, we can head down to the Arcane Nature cluster and get a generous heap of spell damage to make our plants even deadlier.
From this point, you’ll begin to pick up clusters giving you more chance to critically strike and more damage bonus when we strike, allowing us to take advantage of the relatively high base crit chance of plant skills, resulting in a very strong damage package to take you through the rest of the campaign and into maps.
If your defenses are feeling lackluster, keep an eye out for any strong nearby clusters boosting your maximum energy shield and its recharge rate, and shortening your energy shield recharge delay, and remember to check town vendors for strong ES pieces to keep your health pool high and stay alive.
Skill Gems
Listed below are all Skill Gems that should be using during the leveling process. There may be slight variation depending on which Act you’re currently progressing. Notes for each Act will be listed below the Skill Gem tool. All gems and supports are listed in Top->Down Left->Right in order of importance for acquisition.
Act I Notes
Once you enter town for the first time, use your first skill gem on either
Entangle or
Contagion if you already have
Entangle, followed by
Essence Drain. Use
Entangle in combination with
Essence Drain and
Contagion to clear. There is a hidden camp in Clearfell (the first zone upon exiting town) that gives a guaranteed support gem, find and complete this camp and take
Upheaval I as your first support and slot it into your
Entangle.
In the next zone, The Grellwood, there is a witch’s hut with a rare witch mob that will drop a guaranteed skill gem along with two upgraded potions which you find inside the hut, make sure to defeat this witch if its your first playthrough of the league.
Pick up
Essence Drain with the first Level 3 Skill Gem you get and use it for additional single target.
Take
Mana Remnants as your first spirit gem from the Freythorn zone.
With your first Level 5 skill gem pick up
Thunderstorm, use it to empower your
Entangle for both clear and single target.
Contagion and
Essence Drain should become unnecessary now for additional clear and
Essence Drain should be maintained in single target for a bit of extra damage.
Skill Rotation:
Clear:
- Spam
Entangle - Maintain
Thunderstorm to empower it - Cast
Contagion ( If pre-
Thunderstorm ) - Maintain
Essence Drain
Single Target:
- Spam
Entangle - Maintain
Thunderstorm to empower it - Maintain
Essence Drain
Act 2 Notes
Gameplay loop for this build is very simple and satisfying. Just spam
Entangle and keep it watered with
Thunderstorm to empower it, dealing huge damage with the Wildsurge Incantation keystone. With your first Level 2 Support Gem pick up
Accelerated Growth. This will cause purple flowers to grow and explode one time per entangle cast and will become a main source of damage.
Act 3 Notes
The first zone of Act 3, Windswept Marsh, contains a guaranteed lesser jewelers orb in a wicker basket within a hidden camp usually at the top left or top right of the zone. Make sure to grab this!
Once you take down Ignagduk (The Azak Bog, Act 3) you will receive 30 more Spirit. This is where you want to then slot in your
Blasphemy with
Enfeeble slotted into it over
Mana Remnants.
You can also consider keeping
Mana Remnants over this if you feel you need additional mana sustain, in which case slot
Harmonic Remnants I into it along with some spirit supports such as
Clarity I to boost your mana regeneration. Continue to adjust your Support Gem setup to match the builder above.
Continue the main questline until you reach the Temple of Chaos and complete its trial for 2 additional Ascendancy points.
Progressing Beyond Act 3
With your first Level 9 gem pick up
Thrashing Vines. This is where your single target really starts to take off. Maintain uptime on it during boss fights and tanky rares. Don’t forget to empower it with
Thunderstorm!
Not much changes past this point. Keep your spell gem leveled up prioritizing
Entangle, and continue to adjust your support gems to the skill planner above.
Rotation
- Spam
Entangle - Maintain
Thunderstorm to empower it - Keep
Thrashing Vines up for tanky rares and bosses
Gearing Progression
This build equips item upgrades during the campaign according to a stat priority list. Both staves or wands and focus are useable, simply take whatever has the best combination of stats.
Prioritize the following for your Weapon / Offhand / Amulet:
- Levels of All Spell Skills / All Physical Spell Skills
- Increased Spell Damage / Increased Spell Physical Damage
- Cast Speed
- Crit Modifiers
Defensive Gear
Prioritize the following stats on armor and jewelry pieces to improve your tankiness:
- Maximum Life
- Resistances
- Mana
- % increased Physical damage / Crit Modifiers
Runes
Socket Runes into your gear to help bring your missing resistances to the base cap of 75%.
You can Salvage gear you would otherwise vendor that has sockets at the Salvage Bench to obtain Artificer’s Orbs to put extra sockets on your gear.
Leveling Uniques
This build is entirely League-Start / no-budget viable. But if you do have extra currency, pick up these uniques for a twink leveling character:
Weapons and Offhands
Lifesprig with +3 to the level of all Spell Skills – Be careful to get one with a low level requirement.
Deathrattle – Useable from level 1 but worse than a +1 All spells focus. Aim to replace fast.
Threaded Light– Grants spell damage per spirit. Good if you are using a scepter in main hand.
Boots
Luminous Pace – 10% Movement speed Boots useable from level 1.
Wanderlust – 20% Movement speed Boots useable from level 11.
Bushwhack– 25% movement speed Boots useable from level 33. Also Provides Pin for Physical damage which can be nice.
Helm
Goldrim – Tons of resistances useable from level 10.
Thrillsteel – Grants Onslaught ( movement speed, attack speed, cast speed ) Useable from level 30.
Chest
Foxshade– 10% movement speed while on full life. Useable from level 1.
Sands of Silk – Grants the Blink skill for no spirit cost, and additional cooldown recovery rate.
Gloves
Doedre’s Tenure – 100% increased spell damage at the cost of cast speed. Useable at level 16 but falls off as you gain more % increased damage sources.
Campaign Buffs
During the acts there are 4 quests that activate additional bonuses for your character in acts 2,3,5,6. These are my recommended choices:
- Valley of the Titans Altar
- 30% Increased Charm Charges Gained or 30% Increased Charm Duration. Personal Choice.
- Venom Draught
- Stun Threshold or choice dependent on build
- Halls of The Dead:
- +5 Lightning Resistance / +5% Fire Resistance / +5% Cold Resistance
- Abandoned Prison:
- 30% Increased Life Recovery From Flasks
- Qimah:
- Personal Choice, with 3% Movement Speed being the best overall option. Newer players may prefer to take +5% to all Elemental Resistances to bolster your defense.
For more details, check the guide on Campaign Difficulties and Permanent Stat Bonuses.
Flasks and Charms
While leveling you will find several flasks and Charms. Upgrade your flasks as you go along and if you fail to find flask upgrades check vendors to buy them with gold.
Modifiers to look for on your flasks and charms:
