Path of Exile 2‘s Fate of the Vaal league introduces one of the most ambitious and risky mechanics GGG has ever designed. The entire league revolves around exploring, reshaping, and corrupting Queen Atziri’s ancient temple, and with it, a new system centered on high-risk, high-reward decisions.

If you have been confused about how the temple works, how to build it, or what the new corruption rules actually mean, here is a simple breakdown of everything revealed during the latest POE2 stream.

The Vaal Temple – Build Your Own Dungeon

The core of the league is a massive, modular dungeon that you construct one run at a time.

How it starts

You will find remnants of ancient Vaal civilization scattered throughout the world. Those affect nearby monsters, changing them into corrupted versions. Defeat them, and you earn energy to fuel the remnants. You need to find a total of 5 of those Arcane devices and sacrifice the monsters you find there to fully activate it.

When enough energy is collected, a portal opens, sending you to an ancient lost temple, once the home of Atziri, queen of the Vaal.

Designing Your Temple

Inside the temple, you get access to a console, with a map of Atziri’s palace, with her chambers on the far-right side. The goal? Lay out your own path to reach the chambers.

At first, you will see disconnected rooms and a layout that will not make sense at all. The temple is powered by sacrifice, and the energy you gathered can be used to modify the very structure of the temple itself.

Each time you run the temple, you get 6 rooms that you can place. You can then craft your own dungeon to explore. You can place:

  • Paths to link up the dungeon
  • Rooms beside those paths to get precious loot

Once you are ready, open the temple and enter! Each room is essentially a mini-mechanic, with different challenges and different rewards. Be careful, once you step inside, there is no going back, you will have to face whatever is inside.

It is important to note that depending on how you place the rooms, you can get more rewards, but also face more dangers. For example, placing a commander next to a garrison of troops he can control will make the monsters stronger, but also more rewarding.

You can also level up your rooms. Different rooms have different leveling requirements. For example, to level a smithy, you need to supply him with golems from an adjacent golem works, and a generator as well (so you basically place your golem and generator next to the smithy).

You do not need to memorize anything. When you select a room to place, the game directly lights up the spots where you can level up another room, and the effects it will have on the temple.

After running the temple, a few of the rooms will destabilize and be removed. Each time, it is up to you to rebuild the temple, adding another 6 more rooms. This allows you to always make it larger.

To recap, your layout determines:

  • What order you fight rooms in
  • Which rooms power up
  • If you can reach deeper, deadlier chambers
  • If Atziri’s room becomes accessible

Planning matters. A wrong path equals blocked rewards or a dead end.

Time-Traveling

You will also have access to another mechanic. The temple entrance contains a prototype of the time portal device. It can take you back to the specific point right before Atziri destroyed the Vaal. Your goal is to stop Atziri from destroying everything.

Atziri is at the other end of the temple, so you really need to expand the temple a lot. You will have to visit the Architect of the temple first. You can only access him by exploiting some of the Vaal technology available in the past.

Here are some of the rooms you can encounter:

  • Corruption Chambers – Used to corrupt a single item
    • In a level 3 chamber, you will find a device that only accepts corrupted items, and that can corrupt it a second time. You do have a 50% chance of destroying your item.
  • Sacrificial Rooms – Provides with Soul Energy
    • At Level 3, fight a Priest to get another chance of corrupting a Unique item
  • Alchemy Labs – At Level 3, defeat Vaal constructs for new Corrupted Soul Cores
  • Flesh Surgeon’s Theatre – You replace body parts
    • How it works:
      • Replace your own body parts (arms, legs, torso, head) with Vaal-grown versions
      • Each body piece gives special bonuses
      • These bonuses disappear when you die
      • You must revisit the Surgeon to rebuild your body

Each upgraded room is a high-difficulty, high-reward encounter. Think “mini-boss with unique crafting outcomes.”

Corruption – What Is New

This league brings a ton of new ways to corrupt your items. As mentioned already, at Level 3 Corruption Chambers, you unlock a device that lets you corrupt an already-corrupted item a second time, but:

  • 50% chance the item is destroyed
  • 50% chance to gain a powerful Vaal blessing

This is the signature risk/reward loop of the league.

Corrupting Tablets

On top of that, your Vaal Tablets can now be corrupted, creating new tile effects and making mapping options even more dangerous, but always with better rewards.

New Vaal Crafting Options

The league adds also new crafting outcomes tied to:

  • Soul cores
  • Vaal-only modifiers
  • New currency types
  • Unique interactions with corrupted items
  • Items modified through the Flesh Surgeon

The corruption is definitely more calculated: “Understand the room, plan your path, level the chamber, and decide if the risk is worth the reward.”

Queen Atziri – The Pinnacle Boss

Deep in the heart of the temple is Atziri, at the height of her power. Reaching her requires:

  • Correct pathing
  • Proper chamber leveling
  • Surviving the corrupted rooms
  • Building enough temple energy to unlock her gateway

Her fight is entirely new, linked to her obsession with the Beast and corrupted desire.

Defeating Atziri rewards:

  • A new unique staff that amplifies corrupted gems and splits projectiles
  • Exclusive Vaal items
  • High-tier crafting materials

The Fate of the Vaal League is definitely going to be one of POE2’s best updates yet. With the Vaal Temple, high-risk corruption, and the Flesh Surgeon’s body-mod mechanics, we are getting a playground of strategy, experimentation, and reward. Can you survive long enough to face Queen Atziri?
