Fire Trap Trickster Build Guide (PoE Blight 3.8)

Introduction

The Fire Trap Trickster is a trapper that is built around the burning ground effect of Fire Trap Fire Trap. The skill’s extremely high base damage allows us to easily scale Damage over Time in order to reach decent enough damage to deal with any type of content in Path of Exile. Since we do not need to spam traps all the time, we can look at other ascendancy classes than Saboteur. The Trickster ascendancy has a lot of DoT perks along with some other things that synergize well with the defensive aspects of our build.

Build Summary

The build does not require any build-enabling items. The damage is greatly scaled by additional levels applied to Fire Trap Fire Trap (mainly provided via the Weapon and Shield slots). When it comes to defenses, we focus on a lot of Life and Mana, since we are utilizing Mind over Matter.

Pros & Cons

Pros

+ Hardcore viable
+ Very versatile when it comes to map mods
+ Has the potential to do all endgame content

Cons

- Damage over time builds might not be for everyone

Playstyle

Offensively, throwing a single trap will be enough to clear a while pack of monsters. The build reaches a decent amount of area of effect and skill effect duration in order for the clearing to feel smooth.

Defensively, the Trickster has a lot of sustain via the “on kill” Life recovery. With this ascendancy class it is also easy to stack up Life Recovery, which also increases the Life you gain from your Life flask by a great amount. Besides that, we focus on building a great Mana pool in combination with Mind over Matter.

For playstyle, we rely a lot on our mobility and staying defensive by luring enemies into our traps.

Ascendancy, Passive Tree, Bandits and Pantheons

Ascendancy (Shadow – Trickster)

  1. Patient Reaper
  2. Prolonged Pain
  3. Swift Killer
  4. Weave the Arcane

Patient Reaper provides great sustain via the “on kill” effects, along with a lot of Life Recovery if you’ve killed recently and 50% damage over time.

Prolonged Pain brings 20% more multiplier to damage over time effects. The 20% skill effect duration will make your caustic ground last longer (mainly a quality of life improvement), the 10% DoT mitigation is very handy versus Poisons, Bleeds, Burns, and some labyrinth traps.

Swift Killer will help with Frenzy charge sustain; you will also have +1 Maximum Frenzy charges and +5% Increased Damage per Frenzy charge. The Power charges are only used for the additional damage they provide per Power charge.

Weave the Arcane solves most of your Mana problems. It also provides a lot of overall speed and some additional damage mitigation.

Passive Tree

This is the endgame passive skill tree.

We focus on picking as much Life as possible along with Mind over Matter and a lot of Fire Damage over Time multipliers.

Note: For leveling passive skill trees prior to the absolute endgame, please check out the leveling section down below.

Bandits

Considering the build does not benefit from helping any specific bandit we choose to kill them all for the two additional passive skill tree points.

Pantheons

Major: Soul of Arakaali provides 50% Life Recovery synergizes well with the Trickster ascendancy. Other major gods can be selected, based on content you are doing and based on personal preference.

Minor: Soul of Ryslatha empowers your life flask even further if you choose to depend on it a lot. Considering this build does not rely on leech mechanics in order to survive, it is always great to invest further into your Life flask. All minor gods are useful for the build and can be selected based on personal preference.

Pantheon powers can be upgraded by using Divine Vessel in the Map Device while you are activating the particular Map that contains the boss you need. Once you’ve killed the boss and captured his soul, you need to deliver the vessel to Sin in Oriath.

Gems

Fire Trap Fire Trap is your signature skill, which should ideally be used in a 6-Link. For mobility, use Flame Dash Flame Dash. Bear Trap Bear Trap increases the trap damage taken of enemies by a decent amount while also significantly slows them down. When it comes to the Mana reservation buffs, Malevolence Malevolence can increase your damage done by a great amount.

For all the gem links we provide below, keep in mind that we list the gems in order of priority, meaning that if you lack the required number of sockets to fit all the gems, the first ones to drop are the ones at the bottom. Also note that in-game, as long as the sockets are linked, it makes no difference at all what order the gems are placed in.

Fire Trap (6-Link)

Fire Trap Fire Trap applies a burning ground effect for some duration after the trap is triggered. We do not scale the initial hit in any way and only focus on this ground effect in order to deal our damage. We recommend one link that works great both for clearing and single target.

  1. Fire Trap Fire Trap
  2. Controlled Destruction Support Controlled Destruction Support
  3. Burning Damage Support Burning Damage Support
  4. Efficacy Support Efficacy Support
  5. Trap and Mine Damage Support Trap and Mine Damage Support
  6. Empower Support Empower Support

Flame Dash (3-Link)

Flame Dash Flame Dash is your main mobility skill, it will help you easily dodge lethal game mechanics. Adding a low level Arcane Surge Support Arcane Surge Support will provide you with additional damage buff for a short duration every time you use the skill.

  1. Flame Dash Flame Dash
  2. Faster Casting Support Faster Casting Support
  3. Arcane Surge Support Arcane Surge Support (level 5)

Other Gems

Vaal Grace Vaal Grace is the aura you should be running. Phase Run Phase Run allows you to ignore unit collision, while also making you less visible to enemies. Keep in mind that every time you use it, the skill will consume your Frenzy charges. Malevolence Malevolence provides great amount of damage and utility for the build. Steelskin Steelskin can be used as on-demand shield in sticky situations.

Gearing

Capping your elemental resistances is essential and it should always be your top priority in any build; it should be the first thing you do when gearing up a character. Obtaining a 6-link, while very powerful and certainly recommended, can potentially be very expensive (requiring an average of 1500 Orbs of Fusing, obviously depending on your luck); as such, this should not really be a goal for you while gearing up, and you should instead settle for a 5-link until you have enough resources.

Helmet

A well-rolled rare Helmet is best in slot. For labyrinth enchant, look for “45% increased Fire Trap Burning Ground Duration”. The Rare affix priority is:

  1. +#% total Elemental Resistances (until capped)
  2. +# to maximum life (at least 80)
  3. % Increased Maximum Life (Pristine Fossil Pristine Fossil)
  4. Nearby Enemies have -9% to Fire Resistance (Scorched Fossil Scorched Fossil)

Body Armour

There are multiple chest pieces that synergize very well with the build. Kaom's Heart Kaom's Heart will improve your life pool by a great deal. Carcass Jack Carcass Jack improves clear speed by considerable amount. Queen of the Forest Queen of the Forest, Kintsugi Kintsugi, Loreweave Loreweave, The Perfect Form The Perfect Form and Lightning Coil Lightning Coil are all body armours that can be used with the Fire Trap Trickster. You can always choose to use a rare Body Armour. The Rare affix priority is:

  1. +#% total Elemental Resistances (until capped)
  2. +# to maximum life (at least 80)
  3. % Increased Maximum Life (Pristine Fossil Pristine Fossil; Elder Prefix)

Gloves

Well-rolled rare Gloves are best in slot. There are no unique Gloves that are particularly strong for the build. The Rare affix priority is:

  1. +#% total Elemental Resistances (until capped)
  2. +# to maximum life (at least 80)
  3. % Increased Maximum Life (Pristine Fossil Pristine Fossil)

Boots

Prior to a well-rolled Rare pair, you can use Atziri's Step Atziri's Step. For tough endgame bosses, you can use Kaom's Roots Kaom's Roots for the Stun and Freeze immunity. For labyrinth enchants, look for Life and Mana regeneration or Dodge Chance. The Rare affix priority is:

  1. +#% total Elemental Resistances (until capped)
  2. +# to maximum life (at least 80)
  3. % increased Movement Speed (preferably at least 30%)

Belt

A well-rolled rare Elder-based Belt is best in slot. The Rare affix priority is:

  1. +#% total Elemental Resistances (until capped)
  2. +# to maximum life (at least 80)
  3. % Increased Damage (crafted via crafting bench)
  4. % increased maximum Life (Elder Prefix)
  5. % increased Life Recovery rate (Elder Suffix)
  6. Grants Level 20 Aspect of the Spider Skill (if you do not acquire it in another way)

Amulet

A rare Amulet is best in slot. No unique amulet is particularly useful. The Rare affix priority is:

  1. +#% total Elemental Resistances (until capped)
  2. +# to maximum life (at least 60)
  3. % Increased Fire Damage

Rings

For rings, we do not need anything fancy: simply look for as much life, resistances, and any attributes you need. You can also use well rolled Ventor's Gamble Ventor's Gambles. The Rare affix priority is:

  1. +#% total Elemental Resistances (until capped)
  2. +# to maximum life (at least 50)
  3. % increased Chaos Damage (crafted via crafting bench)

Weapon

The Searing Touch The Searing Touch is great endgame choice and it will be very hard to replace it. You can also use a One-hand and Shield with additional levels to Fire gems globally. The Rare affix priority is:

  1. +2 to Level of Socketed Fire Gems
  2. +1 to Level of Socketed Gems
  3. +1 to Level of all Fire Spell Skill Gems
  4. #% to Fire Damage over Time Multiplier
  5. #% increased Fire Damage

Shield

A well rolled rare Shield should be used. The Rare affix priority is:

  1. +#% total Elemental Resistances (until capped)
  2. +# to maximum life (at least 80)
  3. +1 to Level of all Fire Spell Skill Gems

Flasks

Quicksilver Flask Quicksilver Flask is mandatory for the build, as you are mainly running around and do not really rely on a mobility skill. Considering the great amount of Life Recovery you acquire with the build, you can use Eternal Life Flask Eternal Life Flask. Rolling this flask with “% increased Amount Recovered / #% reduced Recovery Speed” can potentially make this flask recover more than 9k of your life in few seconds. Other utility flasks can be used based on content you are running and personal preference. Sapphire Flask Sapphire Flask, Ruby Flask Ruby Flask, Topaz Flask Topaz Flask, Quartz Flask Quartz Flask, Jade Flask Jade Flask, Basalt Flask Basalt Flask, and Stibnite Flask Stibnite Flask are all valuable choices.

Be sure to check out our Flask Crafting Guide to learn everything you need to know about how to set up your non-Unique flasks.

Jewels

There are no unique Jewels required for the build. Watcher's Eye Watcher's Eye with Malevolence Malevolence mods can be useful for the build.

Regular Jewel Affix Priority

  1. % Increased Maximum Life
  2. % to Fire Damage over Time Multiplier
  3. % increased Fire Damage
  4. % increased Burning Damage
  5. % increased Damage over Time
  6. % increased Damage
  7. % increased Area Damage

Abyssal Jewel Affix Priority

  1. Chance to gain Onslaught for 4 seconds on Kill (at least 4%)
  2. Maximum Life (at least 30)

Leveling

As a reminder, we have several guides to help you level up a character.

The Fire Trap Trickster can be leveled with its signature since the beginning. Single target damage will lack early on. You can always level as any other skill you prefer.

Leveling Trees

This passive skill tree represents where you should be at approximately level 60.

Useful Leveling Unique Items

As you begin a new character, there are few unique items that can boost your power exponentially. Tabula Rasa Tabula Rasa allows you to have a 6-Linked skill as early as you get the gems. Wanderlust Wanderlust gives a decent movement speed, which will make your leveling that much more efficient. Goldrim Goldrim provides a lot of elemental resistances, this will let you worry less about gearing when approaching certain Act encounters.

If you are a new player (or if this is your first character for the league), then note that obtaining these items will be very difficult, if not impossible. They are rare drops, which you can otherwise only acquire if you have saved up currency, so do not focus on them too much, and instead simply look for items that match the affix priorities listed in the gearing section above.

Gem Progression

Using Tabula Rasa Tabula Rasa will allow you to have 6-Link gem setups early on, which is why we show such examples below. If you cannot get Tabula Rasa (or another item with a 6-Link), then simply prioritize the first gems in each link provided below.

In order to acquire gems that are not available to your class as a quest reward, simply ask a friend to buy them off vendors for you, or buy them yourself from Sioasa in The Library in Act III Library.

From level 1, you should use the following link.

Explosive Trap Explosive Trap

By level 8, your Explosive Trap Explosive Trap link should look like this.

  1. Explosive Trap Explosive Trap
  2. Added Fire Damage Support Added Fire Damage Support

At level 10, you should add Flame Dash Flame Dash for additional mobility.

At level 18, you should replace your trap setup with your signature skill.

  1. Fire Trap Fire Trap
  2. Controlled Destruction Support Controlled Destruction Support
  3. Trap and Mine Damage Support Trap and Mine Damage Support

At level 24, you should add Malevolence Malevolence for additional damage.

By level 31, your Fire Trap Fire Trap link should look like this.

  1. Fire Trap Fire Trap
  2. Controlled Destruction Support Controlled Destruction Support
  3. Burning Damage Support Burning Damage Support
  4. Efficacy Support Efficacy Support
  5. Trap and Mine Damage Support Trap and Mine Damage Support

FAQ

Why Life Trickster instead of Chaos Inoculation Occultist?

The Occultist is a very strong ascendancy class defensively, but the damage Trickster reaches is much higher.

Problematic Map Mods?

The build cannot run No Regeneration maps. Besides that anything else is doable.

Conclusion

The Fire Trap Trickster throws traps that create an incinerating burning ground effect, which swallows enemies and turns them into ash.

This is a very particular build, thanks for sharing it!
How about using Slavedriver's Hand Slavedriver's Hand ? With them you have:
    1) Increased trap throwing speed (by cast speed) and more area of effect (so, much more clear speed).
    2) Frenzy, power and endurance charges (More damage and tankiness).
    3) Blood magic for traps, so you can run No Regen maps.

Hey, the Gloves are great I agree. Considering how the playstyle is I’d not recommend them though, simply because you just throw a trap, run around and throw again, just making sure you keep up the burning ground effect. You do not need a lot of trap throwing speed. It is definitely up to personal preference and you can equip them if you want.

Hey I’m currently trying to gather currency for this build and I have two questions :

1/ How is the dps against shaper and UBER elder? Cause I want to make this build my boss killer.

2/ Is it possible to make a mix between fire trap for bossing, and Fire ball for mapping? Will it be efficient?

    Thx a lot!

    Hey,

    1) The build definitely has enough damage to tackle the hardest of bosses. You will mainly have to adjust your playstyle, since you will have to make sure your burning ground is under the right target at the right time.

    2) Due to how the build scales (mainly burning) it will not be efficient to use Fireball Fireball. I’d recommend sticking with Fire Trap Fire Trap for both clearing and single target.

I Was thinking about a ignite
Fireball (as we can find in this website but as elementalist). But I also believe that it’s better to stay on one main spell

Hey, both characters are very differently built and have very different playstyles. They are also both using one main skill, if you like builds that make use of multiple skills simply let me know what archetype you like the most and I’ll make sure to recommend a few you can check out.
