Introduction

Welcome to our Quick Reference Leveling guide for Patch 3.9 Metamorph League. This is intended to help players keep track of the quests worth completing, as well as the best order to complete them — if you are looking to level up in a new league as fast as possible but without missing any of the essential quests, this is the guide for you. Some quests are not included, as they are simply not worth investing time towards, even on a league starter. If you are a completionist, however, feel free to deviate from our advised path as you see fit.

This process has been optimized for speed and efficiency, but there are further enhancements race minded players can make. For example, you could opt to skip the Labyrinth trial in the Lower Prison until you have two Quicksilver Flasks and a mobility skill, and save a few seconds. For the majority of players, however, this guide should present the quickest and most convenient pathing possible.

Depending on your character’s level of power, you can opt to do Labyrinth whenever preferable, although we recommend always doing it as early as you are capable. The power spike for many builds is palpable, and you lose less time if the lab is still providing meaningful experience for your level.

Logging Out

Logging out to Character Selection is a great way to conserve Portal Scroll Portal Scrolls when leveling your first character in a league. Once you re-enter the game, your character will be in the home city, just as if you had used a Portal Scroll.

If you are leveling on league launch, it is very important that you do not accidentally hit “Exit to Log In Screen” or “Exit Path of Exile”, as you will have to rejoin the queue to log in to the game.

For players unfamiliar with this trick, simply hit “Exit to Character Selection” and immediately hit the ENTER key to log back in without delay. It is also permitted to use an AutoHotkey script to log out to character selection.

Glad you enjoyed it. It is indeed super helpful. I was surprised how much of a difference it can make myself as well when I first used it.

Hey, thanks for posting this! I was actually wondering how to make some sort of overlay of the guide, because even with two monitors, it’s a bit annoying to switch back and forth from the guide to the game.

I’ll be sure to try it out!

Amazing guide – awesomeness – thank you so much for putting this together.

One quick typo I found – Act 9 step 17 should say Enter the Black Core and Talk to Sin – not Enter the Black Heart.

Thanks, and good catch, I’ve fixed the error.

Just cut my leveling time down from 36 hours to a mere 8 just by tabbing in and out of this. Some points I feel like left and right terms are swapped from the minimap perspective to relative to the entrance of a map though. Most of the guide left/right/up/down is directions on the minimap.
However, on brine kings reef, for example, the guide says to hug the left wall and the portal was all the way to the right wall so I looped the entire map for it. Is this unlucky generation or was that part written in perspective to the entrance? Because if I went left from the entrance (which was to the right on the minimap at the time) that would’ve been the fast route for sure.

It’s just an unlucky layout, in that sense. It’s written from an “absolute” perspective (always the perspective of you looking at the map) — in the case of Brine King’s Reef, the majority of layouts have the entrance to the boss closer to the left side of the map (about 60/40 chances). Unless you are specifically familiar with the layouts, we just recommend picking that wall and following it — even if its on the other side of the map it’s still generally faster than sweeping back and forth.

thanks mate this is one of the better guides out there maybe not the most efficient path but it works and is really easy to keep the speed up. thanks a ton for getting me through the tutorial in less than 9 hours.

My pleasure. The path is meant to strike a balance between efficiency and “realistic” pathing — for example, if you were racing there would be things you might opt not to do but for most players it is simply convenient to get done at the time (e.g. certain lab trials).

Hello! Thanks for this amazing guide! I was playing a character not knowing anything. And then I started to follow your guide and it’s been so much better! I have one question. I’m already in the act 4. But there’s nothing that says where or when to do the ascension of class. It’s any reason why you’re not explaining this. Or it is later into the acts?

I’m sort of confused as to the levels for each gem. Should I assume that all gems are level 1 unless there is a level stated next to them? This doesn’t sound right to me but I’m fairly new to POE so I don’t know much about build building.

In my builds you should assume all gems are max level unless explicitly listed otherwise.

People choose to ascend at different times and it largely depends on your builds leveling power, your own skill and level of comfort with the labyrinth, and what pace you are opting to level at. In the end, unless you are doing a very short duration race event it doesn’t make a lot of difference, so I would do it as early as you are able without risking dying and wasting time.
