Guide Format

This build guide is split over multiple pages, both to prevent it from getting too long, as well as to help you better find the information you are looking for. In addition to the current page, which presents general information about the build and also contains a Leveling and FAQ section, we have the following pages:

Introduction

The Inquisitor ascendancy class is potentially the best choice for an elemental critical-based build. Inevitable Judgement bypasses enemies’ elemental resistances, which allows us to focus on scaling the damage of the skill. Freezing Pulse Freezing Pulse has great base damage and critical strike chance. First Snow First Snow solves projectile issues for the build.

Scaling as much Spell Damage, Cold Damage, Critical Chance and Critical Damage is what we aim to do. For defence, the Freezing Pulse Inquisitor is able to achieve more than 210% Increased Maximum Life, 6 jewel sockets and great mana pool with Mind over Matter.

Build Summary

The build can be started without any initial currency investment. The only mandatory items needed are the two threshold jewels, First Snow First Snow. This is one of the few builds that can be played with only rare items if you choose to do so. Cloak of Defiance Cloak of Defiance can be used for the additional mana and improved Mind over Matter effect.

Pros & Cons

Pros

+ Hardcore viable
+ Great clear speed
+ Budget-friendly

Cons

- Bad physical damage mitigation

Playstyle

Offensively, using spells and attacks in sequence will improve your clear speed by a great deal, this is because we pick up the Instruments of Virtue ascendancy node. It is easy to utilize this since you will be using Shield Charge Shield Charge to move around and cast Freezing Pulse Freezing Pulse all the time. Besides that you should keep your distance and make sure your Diamond Flask is active. Herald of Ice Herald of Ice will smooth out your clear speed via its cold explosions.

Defensively, we achieve a respectable life pool, along with very effective Mind over Matter. You will essentially take 40% of the incoming damage as mana before life (if you use Cloak of Defiance Cloak of Defiance).

For Playstyle, we aim to clear as fast as possible. For mobility, we use Shield Charge all the time, since this is the most efficient way to move around. One or two casts of Freezing Pulse will be enough to kill most monster packs. A Curse on Hit setup can be done with Herald of Ice, which will allow you to utilize Assassin's Mark Assassin's Mark for better critical strike chance and damage, this is also a reliable way to sustain Power charges.

Passive Tree

This is what the endgame passive skill tree looks like.

For more information, be sure to check out the Passive Skill Tree page.

Ascendancy, Bandits, and Pantheons

Our Ascendancy, Bandit, and Pantheon Power page goes into detail about all the choices you need to make in these regards.

Gems

We go over all of the gem links this build uses in the end-game on our Gem Link page.

Gear Summary / TL;DR

These items provide a good balance between offense and defense and are enough to deal with the endgame, although there is definitely a room for improvement. Please ensure you read the Gear, Jewels and Flasks page in its entirety.

Our recommendation:

Item Slot Item Name
Head Rare Helmet
Amulet Rare Amulet
Chest Cloak of Defiance Cloak of Defiance
Gloves Rare Gloves
Boots Rare Boots
Belt Rare Stygian Vise Stygian Vise
Rings Rare Opal Ring Opal Rings
Weapon Rare Rune Dagger
Shield Rare Shield

Leveling

As a reminder, we have several guides to help you level up a character.

The Freezing Pulse Inquisitor can be levelled with its signature skill since level 1 without any investment, this is why this build is a great league-starter.

Leveling Trees

This is what your passive skill tree should look like before you transition to critical strikes.

First you should head to Discipline and Training, Holy Dominion and Light of Divinity. After picking up the damage, life and mana near the Witch starting area, then you should head to the Scion life wheel. Heading to Shadow is the last thing you should do. We recommend transitioning into critical strikes at level 60+.

Useful Leveling Unique Items

As you begin a new character, there are few unique items that can boost your power exponentially. Tabula Rasa Tabula Rasa allows you to have a 6-Linked skill as early as you get the gems. Wanderlust Wanderlust gives a decent movement speed, which will make your levelling that much more efficient. Goldrim Goldrim provides a lot of elemental resistances, this will let you worry less about gearing when approaching certain Act encounters. Lifesprig Lifesprig will fill your damage needs early on.

If you are a new player (or if this is your first character for the league), then note that obtaining these items will be very difficult, if not impossible. They are rare drops, which you can otherwise only acquire if you have saved up currency, so do not focus on them too much, and instead simply look for items that match the affix priorities listed in the gearing section above.

Gem Progression

Using Tabula Rasa Tabula Rasa will allow you to have 6-Link gem setups early on, which is why we show such examples below. If you cannot get Tabula Rasa (or another item with a 6-Link), then simply prioritize the first gems in each link provided below.

In order to acquire gems that are not available to your class as a quest reward, simply ask a friend to buy them off vendors for you, or buy them yourself from Sioasa in The Library in Act III Library.

From level 1, you should use the following link in Lifesprig Lifesprig.

  1. Freezing Pulse Freezing Pulse
  2. Onslaught Support Onslaught Support
  3. Arcane Surge Support Arcane Surge Support

At level 4, you can add Frost Bomb Frost Bomb for better damage output.

At level 10, you should add Flame Dash Flame Dash for additional mobility.

At level 16, you should add Herald of Ice Herald of Ice for additional damage.

By level 18, your Freezing Pulse Freezing Pulse link should look like this.

  1. Freezing Pulse Freezing Pulse
  2. Onslaught Support Onslaught Support
  3. Controlled Destruction Support Controlled Destruction Support
  4. Arcane Surge Support Arcane Surge Support
  5. Added Cold Damage Support Added Cold Damage Support
  6. Faster Casting Support Faster Casting Support

At level 38, your Freezing Pulse Freezing Pulse link should look like this.

  1. Freezing Pulse Freezing Pulse
  2. Controlled Destruction Support Controlled Destruction Support
  3. Hypothermia Support Hypothermia Support
  4. Added Cold Damage Support Added Cold Damage Support
  5. Spell Echo Support Spell Echo Support
  6. Faster Casting Support Faster Casting Support

FAQ

What map mods are impossible for the build to do?

You will one-shot yourself to Elemental Reflect. No regeneration maps are also impossible/near impossible to do.

Does the build have enough damage for endgame encounters?

Once you are well geared you should have enough damage and survivability to deal with endgame encounters, as long as you are experienced and know the fights.

Conclusion

The Freezing Pulse Inquisitor is a cold-based caster that specializes in inflicting very powerful critical damage. The build is able to Freeze all monsters along with some bosses.

What about the rising need of DEX on the Herald of Ice or Hypothermia Support Gem for example? Thank you :)

Hey, if you are struggling with Dexterity aim to have good rolls on your Boots, Rings and Amulet, you can also pick some Dexterity on the Passive Tree until you get the right gear.

I wonder why do you chose to go with hypothermia support instead of lets say arcane surge?

Hey, Hypothermia Support Hypothermia Support‘s damage multiplier is way superior compared to most support gems.

    Hi,

First of all, thanks for that build ! I am leveling up on Metamorph and it is a breeze (and very cheap indeed) !

I would have a few questions, I am a noob so forgive if some are trivials:

    • What defense stat should you be looking for besides ele res ? I am unclear if we want to go ES or armor.

    • How is this build sustaining lifewise ? I get the Mind over Matter + mana regen, and flat life regen, but is that really enough ? I’ve only played melee build previously and almost all of them were life leech based and life would go up instantly after a bad hit. Here I feel like I have to run around 10sec everytime I get crit’ed. Would you consider adding a blasphemy curse and using that shield that grants 1% life leech on damage (Thirst_for_Horrors) ? The shield itself is terrible, but since we’re running rares items I figure it won’t be too hard to cap the resistances. With 1m dps and a large life pool it would seem that 1% life leech is enough.

    • I get that you get 30% damage reduction while mana is available, but I feel like I have way too much mana. Shouldn’t we be running an extra aura or curse ? Or switching to life nodes ? Right now I am low level so maybe this doesn’t apply later on. Again this relates to how the build sustains itself, which I don’t understand.

    Cheers! (and thanks again!)

Hey, for defense you mainly stack a lot of Life and Mana. Armour is also very helpful but you can mainly get Physical mitigation via Granite Flask Granite Flask and Basalt Flask Basalt Flask. You can also go Hybrid (have both decent Life and Energy Shield pool) and use something like Energy Leech Support Energy Leech Support, which can help out with sustain. Having a lot of free Mana is essential to every MoM build, you should keep it that way simply because your Mana will be able to soak way more damage. If you feel like it is a waste you can add an additional Aura but your MoM will not be as efficient. Thanks for the kind feedback!

Hi There, I have been trying out this build recently and I noticed that I don’t have enough damage to kill rare or unique monsters, can I know how I can improve or the reason behind it? Thanks so much for creating such a build, it really entertains me early on.
-Character level 70 now act 10, resistance fully capped, 3.5k hp, and boss might 3 hit kill me, and my damage to the boss or rare monster are quite low (require a lot of time to kill the monsters) Thanks for helping.

Hey, I’d be glad to help out but I would need a link to your PoE profile in order to check out the character.

    Hi again!

I’m facing the same problem as Jaqzu here. So far I’m lvl 89 with what I think is decent gear (). I’m barelly breaking 250k dps with arcane surge up (I’m still leveling controlled destruction). Not only that but I sometimes get OS by phys boss (or chaos but that’s normal I guess).

I’ve respect and gone a slightly different route than you in the skill three:Im going for Snowforge and Throatseeker rather than Arcane potency. The reason is, I don’t think I will ever be able to reach purity of flesh (I won’t level up to 100). All in all I get slightly more DPS that way.

It’d be really cool if you could let me know what I am doing wrong ! (https://www.pathofexile.com/account/view-profile/ValMishra/characters Char name is Chepawkabra) For survavibility I could get a 0.2% life leech ring, but these go for a ton of $$$ right now. For now my boots do the leech. But DPSwise I am at a lost… Every 30c I drop to upgrade an item I climb up by a small 2/3k dps…

    Cheers and thanks again !

Hello, two big things I’d recommend. Drop Arcane Surge from your main link and use Added Cold Damage Support Added Cold Damage Support or Increased Critical Damage Support Increased Critical Damage Support instead. You can easily get Arcane Surge via Flame Dash-Arcane Surge link (low level Arcane Surge). You should also get an Assassins Mark CoH Ring and drop your current Herald of Ice links. You should run Zealotry Zealotry and Herald of Ice Herald of Ice if possible. Zealotry is a big damage boost in general. Let me know how it goes.
