Ignite Burning Arrow Chieftain Build Guide (PoE Delirium 3.10)

This build is not updated for the current patch, but we have evaluated it and we consider it to still work as intended. You can try it out, but you may find slight differences between this guide and the current game state. Although viable, this build is not considered strong enough to be an optimal play choice during this league.

Guide Format

This build guide is split over multiple pages, both to prevent it from getting too long, as well as to help you better find the information you are looking for. In addition to the current page, which presents general information about the build and also contains a Leveling and FAQ section, we have the following pages:

Introduction

With changes to Burning Arrow Burning Arrow and Ignite with attacks in general we are able to build a very solid character around these mechanics. The Ignite Burning Arrow Chieftain focuses on reaching high amounts of Ignite damage, which is easily proliferated between enemies while maintaining good survivability.

The build is Critical-based and obviously uses Bows in order to deal its damage. Bow damage over time and Crit nodes are very efficient in general and this is great for building characters such as this one.

Build Summary

We mainly focus on scaling Physical damage, which is then fully converted to Fire via the 100% conversion from the Burning Arrow Burning Arrow gem itself. Xoph's Nurture Xoph's Nurture is a very good unique Bow that greatly synergizes with the build over all. Besides that we focus on Elemental Damage with Attacks, Critical modifiers, Fire Damage Over Time Multiplier and Life. We also manage to utilize Endurance charges with Chieftain, this is why we pick two of them on the passive skill tree.

Pros & Cons

Pros

+ Hardcore viable
+ Good endgame potential
+ Cheap to start

Cons

- DoT builds are not for everyone

Playstyle

Offensively, your goal is to Ignite a pack of monsters, which will die shortly after. Against tougher foes you can keep attacking the target in order to stack up additional burning damage. Vaal Burning Arrow Vaal Burning Arrow hits extremely hard and will blast most of your foes out of existance.

Defensively, having a decent Life pool and good use of Immortal Call Immortal Call will allow you to survive hairy situations. Playing a DoT build allows you to hit once every couple of seconds and then be very mobile, dodging lethal game mechanics etc.

For playstyle, shooting a once and moving on while clearing is what you should be doing. Good use of additional utility skills will ensure your success in big boss fights.

Passive Tree

Here is the endgame passive skill tree for the build.

For more information, be sure to check out the passive skill tree page.

Passive Tree Page

Ascendancy, Bandits, and Pantheons

Our Ascendancy, Bandit, and Pantheon Power page goes into detail about all the choices you need to make in these regards.

Ascendancy, Bandits, Pantheons Page

Gems

We go over all of the gem links this build uses in the end-game on our Gem Link page.

Gem Link Page

Gear Summary / TL;DR

These items provide a good balance between offense and defense and are enough to deal with the endgame, although there is definitely a room for improvement. Please ensure you read the Gear, Jewels and Flasks page in its entirety.

Gear Page

Our recommendation:

Item Slot Item Name
Head Rare Helmet
Amulet Rare Amulet
Chest Kaom's Heart Kaom's Heart
Gloves Rare Gloves
Boots Rare Boots
Belt Dyadian Dawn Dyadian Dawn
Rings Rare Rings
Weapon Xoph's Nurture Xoph's Nurture
Quiver Rare Quiver

Leveling

As a reminder, we have several guides to help you level up a character.

The character can easily be levelled with its signature skill since the begining, although we recommend transitioning to Burning Arrow Burning Arrow later if you do not have some levelling gear pieces.

Leveling Trees

This is the passive skill tree that will allow you to get through the levelling content smoothly.

Useful Leveling Unique Items

As you begin a new character, there are few unique items that can boost your power exponentially. Tabula Rasa Tabula Rasa allows you to have a 6-Linked skill as early as you get the gems. Wanderlust Wanderlust gives a decent movement speed, which will make your leveling that much more efficient. Goldrim Goldrim provides a lot of elemental resistances, this will let you worry less about gearing when approaching certain Act encounters.

If you are a new player (or if this is your first character for the league), then note that obtaining these items will be very difficult, if not impossible. They are rare drops, which you can otherwise only acquire if you have saved up currency, so do not focus on them too much, and instead simply look for items that match the affix priorities listed in the gearing section above.

Gem Progression

Using Tabula Rasa Tabula Rasa will allow you to have 6-Link gem setups early on, which is why we show such examples below. If you cannot get Tabula Rasa (or another item with a 6-Link), then simply prioritize the first gems in each link provided below.

In order to acquire gems that are not available to your class as a quest reward, simply ask a friend to buy them off vendors for you, or buy them yourself from Sioasa in The Library in Act III Library.

From level 1, you should use the following link.

  1. Vaal Burning Arrow Vaal Burning Arrow
  2. Onslaught Support Onslaught Support

At level 4, you can add Decoy Totem Decoy Totem to help you out in boss fights.

At level 8, your Vaal Burning Arrow Vaal Burning Arrow link should look like this.

  1. Vaal Burning Arrow Vaal Burning Arrow
  2. Lesser Multiple Projectiles Support Lesser Multiple Projectiles Support
  3. Pierce Support Pierce Support
  4. Combustion Support Combustion Support
  5. Added Fire Damage Support Added Fire Damage Support
  6. Onslaught Support Onslaught Support

At level 10, you should add Blink Arrow Blink Arrow for better mobility.

At level 16 and 24 you should add Herald of Ash Herald of Ash and Malevolence Malevolence for additional damage.

At level 38, your Vaal Burning Arrow Vaal Burning Arrow link should look like this.

Single target:

  1. Vaal Burning Arrow Vaal Burning Arrow
  2. Deadly Ailments Support Deadly Ailments Support
  3. Burning Damage Support Burning Damage Support
  4. Combustion Support Combustion Support
  5. Elemental Damage with Attacks Support Elemental Damage with Attacks Support
  6. Swift Affliction Support Swift Affliction Support

Clearing:

  1. Vaal Burning Arrow Vaal Burning Arrow
  2. Greater Multiple Projectiles Support Greater Multiple Projectiles Support
  3. Pierce Support Pierce Support
  4. Ignite Proliferation Support Ignite Proliferation Support
  5. Elemental Damage with Attacks Support Elemental Damage with Attacks Support
  6. Burning Damage Support Burning Damage Support

FAQ

What map mods are impossible to do?

You will most likely one-shot yourself on Elemental Reflect. No Regeneration maps will also be very hard to do and will force you to use a Mana flask. Besides that everything else should be fine as long as you don’t have too many nasty mods on the same map.

Why Chieftain?

There are other great ascendancy choices for a build like this one, for example Trickster can be amazing. We chose Chieftain for this particular build guide because it has great balance between offense and defense unlike most of the other ascendancy choices.

Conclusion

The Ignite Burning Arrow Chieftain specializes in inflicting very strong damage over time Burn effects on enemies. If you like the fire archer playstyle that burns enemies to ashes this build is a great one to look at.

Changelog
  •

Revisited and updated for Delirium 3.10. The build remains a solid choice if you want to play a Bow Ignite build but it requires decent gear investment.

Hello ! does the Xoph’s Nurture really necessary when we have 100% of our Physical Damage converted as Fire Damage with the new Burning Arrow ? I don’t recall that we can stack more damage over 100% (Maybe I’m wrong just asking)

Also, if we have the Kaom’s Heart, where do we put our 2nd 6 link ? A second bow on our second gear set ?

And finally, why not using Point Blank ?

I’m still a beginner to the game, sorry if my questions are kind of ‘silly’ ! :)

Hey, there is no reason to have a 2nd 6-Link, you just swap the gems between clearing and boss fights. Xoph's Nurture Xoph's Nurture can be used for the 7th link it provides via Ignite Proliferation Support Ignite Proliferation Support and the solid damage the Bow has any ways, but you can use other Bows too. Point Blank is great and you can pick it up, for this particular build I chose to be more of a ranged one since the content is expected to be hard. Always glad to see new players.

Since blight gonna become core in 3.9 which notable is the best to anoint?
and what about accuracy? seems like this build is lacking it.

Hey, you can definitely get something like Versatility or Aquity, but you can spec into those manually too. I’d recommend looking at things like Discipline and Training or Assassination.

Hey, we focus on updating and keeping text guides fresh, for now we do not have PoB links.

This guide uses Inspiration Support incorrectly. Inspiration only increases damage for linked skills. Adding it to Blink Arrow does nothing.

This is true, it only reduces the Mana cost and not necessary.

The build is a bit gear dependent, so if you are willing to invest go for it. If you are still struggling with currency I could recommend something more budget-friendly.

    Hi, good evening.

I have but just one question, it’s something I fail to perceive. You use Vaal Burning Arrow, but it needs souls to use it. How do you gather them?

Thank you, and happy new year! =)

Hey, souls are gathered while you are killing enemies in a particular zone or take down a big boss’ HP. Happy new year!

Oh, right. I mean, that’s the part I got it. It’s just that’s not listed how it’s done in this particular build. I mean, just use a four-link normal burning arrow? That’s where I need some clearence.

Just use the normal version of the skill for clearing and then save the Vaal version for single target, you do not have to use two separate gem setups.
