Guide Format

This build guide is split over multiple pages, both to prevent it from getting too long, as well as to help you better find the information you are looking for. In addition to the current page, which presents general information about the build and also contains a Leveling and FAQ section, we have the following pages:

Introduction

The Pure Fire Shockwave Totem Chieftain is a very tanky Totem character that has great sustain and fun playstyle. The build is non-Crit-based and utilizes multiple keystone notables in order to reach its full potential. Ancestral Bond allows us to fully rely on our Totems to do the work, while Avatar of Fire makes them only deal damage of the Fire element and non else. Elemental Overload boosts our Elemental damage substantially and Blood Magic & Mortal Conviction solve all of our Mana problems and allow us to run Anger Anger for free.

Build Summary

The build requires no initial investment and is a great league-starter. We mainly focus on well-rolled rare items, which also allows you to play the build in an SSF environment. Even with little gear the build will achieve a respectable Life pool due to the great amount of % increased Life that is picked up on the passive skill tree. The damage is scaled by Spell damage, Totem damage, Physical damage, Fire damage and AoE damage. A cheap unique like Doon Cuebiyari Doon Cuebiyari can be used, since you will probably have a great amount of Strength.

Pros & Cons

Pros

+ Hardcore viable
+ Good boss killer
+ Great life sustain via Tukohama, War’s Herald ascendancy node
+ Budget-friendly

Cons

- Single target damage in the endgame is not comparable to top tier boss killers, but is enough

Playstyle

Offensively, placing a single set of Totems will be enough to kill most monster packs. Considering the build is taking advantage of the Elemental Overload node, you can drop down an Orb of Storms Orb of Storms in order to trigger the keystone. To augment your single target damage further, you can hand-cast curses like Flammability Flammability.

Defensively, keeping your distance and letting Totems do the work is what the build is all about. If you get hit you can easily recover, since you leech Life based on the damage done of your Totems. The build also achieves a good amount of Life regeneration.

For playstyle, place Totems next to monster packs and move on. When encountering a tougher monster, curse it with your offensive curse and drop down Orb of Storms in order to trigger the Elemental Overload effect.

Passive tree

This is what the endgame passive skill tree looks like.

For more information, be sure to check out the Passive Skill Tree page.

Ascendancy, Bandits, and Pantheons

Our Ascendancy, Bandit, and Pantheon Power page goes into detail about all the choices you need to make in these regards.

Gems

We go over all of the gem links this build uses in the end-game on our Gem Link page.

Gear Summary / TL;DR

These items provide a good balance between offense and defense and are enough to deal with the endgame, although there is definitely a room for improvement. Please ensure you read the Gear, Jewels and Flasks page in its entirety.

Our recommendation:

Item Slot Item Name
Head Rare Helmet
Amulet Rare Amulet
Chest Belly of the Beast Belly of the Beast
Gloves Rare Gloves
Boots Rare Boots
Belt Rare Stygian Vise Stygian Vise
Rings Rare Opal Ring Opal Ring
Weapon Doon Cuebiyari Doon Cuebiyari
Shield Rare Shield

Leveling

As a reminder, we have several guides to help you level up a character.

You can start using Shockwave Totem Shockwave Totem as soon as you pick the Ancestral Bond keystone notable. We recommend leveling up to level 30-35 by dual wielding melee weapons and using Molten Strike Molten Strike.

Leveling Trees

This passive skill tree will allow you to start using Shockwave Totem Shockwave Totem efficiently. After that you should head to Avatar of Fire and Elemental Overload.

Useful Leveling Unique Items

As you begin a new character, there are few unique items that can boost your power exponentially. Tabula Rasa Tabula Rasa allows you to have a 6-Linked skill as early as you get the gems. Wanderlust Wanderlust gives a decent movement speed, which will make your leveling that much more efficient. Goldrim Goldrim provides a lot of elemental resistances, this will let you worry less about gearing when approaching certain Act encounters.

If you are a new player (or if this is your first character for the league), then note that obtaining these items will be very difficult, if not impossible. They are rare drops, which you can otherwise only acquire if you have saved up currency, so do not focus on them too much, and instead simply look for items that match the affix priorities listed in the gearing section above.

Gem Progression

Using Tabula Rasa Tabula Rasa will allow you to have 6-Link gem setups early on, which is why we show such examples below. If you cannot get Tabula Rasa (or another item with a 6-Link), then simply prioritize the first gems in each link provided below.

In order to acquire gems that are not available to your class as a quest reward, simply ask a friend to buy them off vendors for you, or buy them yourself from Sioasa in The Library in Act III Library.

From level 1, you should use the following link.

  1. Molten Strike Molten Strike
  2. Onslaught Support Onslaught Support
  3. Maim Support Maim Support

At level 4, you should add Ancestral Protector Ancestral Protector for additional single target damage. At this point your Molten Strike Molten Strike link should look like this.

  1. Molten Strike Molten Strike
  2. Onslaught Support Onslaught Support
  3. Maim Support Maim Support
  4. Ancestral Call Support Ancestral Call Support

At level 10, add Leap Slam Leap Slam for additional mobility.

By level 18, your Molten Strike Molten Strike link should look like this.

  1. Molten Strike Molten Strike
  2. Ancestral Call Support Ancestral Call Support
  3. Elemental Damage with Attacks Support Elemental Damage with Attacks Support
  4. Elemental Focus Support Elemental Focus Support
  5. Melee Physical Damage Support Melee Physical Damage Support
  6. Concentrated Effect Support Concentrated Effect Support

At level 24, you should pick up Anger Anger.

Once you have picked up Ancestral Bond, you can start using your signature skill, Shockwave Totem Shockwave Totem. You should ideally do this around level 38, until then the skill might feel clunky (the reason being Multiple Totems Support Multiple Totems Support). Replace Molten Strike Molten Strike with the following Shockwave Totem link.

  1. Shockwave Totem Shockwave Totem
  2. Multiple Totems Support Multiple Totems Support
  3. Controlled Destruction Support Controlled Destruction Support
  4. Added Fire Damage Support Added Fire Damage Support
  5. Elemental Focus Support Elemental Focus Support
  6. Fire Penetration Support Fire Penetration Support

FAQ

Why do you pick Minion nodes?

The Spiritual Aid node on the passive tree allow you to benefit from Minion damage; Minion nodes on the passive tree are very point-efficient in general.

What map mods are impossible to do?

This is one of the very few builds that can do all map mods.

Conclusion

The Pure Fire Shockwave Totem Chieftain places very tough Totems that deal reliable amount of damage that is enough to take down the hardest of encounters. The character is very tanky and has great sustain, which will allow you to learn boss fights while having the option to make a mistake here and there.

You got some problems with this build but I think you got a good idea here.

Here’s what I like about this build over other totem builds:
1: SSF friendly. Huge plus, means I don’t have to worry about being weighed down by the fact I don’t have X unique.
2: It’s a Marauder build instead of Templar. It’s less overall damage for more survivability and a better voice actor + character model.
3: Simple build with decent clear speed.
4: The shaper DPS was higher than I thought it would be with budget gear.

Here’s what I found to be problematic:
1: Arcane surge can’t proc because you can’t spend mana because you have Blood Magic.
2: Zealotry is better than Anger here. You’re converting physical spell damage to fire spell damage, so instead of getting only 15% more spell damage, you’re getting 30% because of how damage calculations work. (Multiplies physical, then lightning, then cold, then fire.)
3: You have a couple passive inefficiencies that can free you up a couple points to allocate somewhere else.
4: The minion damage cluster is not as good as you think. That cluster only gives you 76% increased damage for 5 points, which is far less than other nearby clusters. This WOULD be good if you multicrafted a sceptre to have inc minion damage on top of a bunch of other damage mods. That cluster would work better on trade league, honestly.
5: Avoiding endurance charges is really strange to me, and I found it beneficial to run Enduring Cry with at least the Marauder charge node for some extra life regen and phys mitigation.
6: The golem setup for combustion is really finicky. More times than not my golem did jack shit and never ignited the boss. Not sure if my golem is just a tard, but it’s something.
7: You have a lot of open sockets in this build which is bad. It’s not like 1 or 2, it’s 7. I would recommend looking into maybe a Meat Shield zombie setup and a CWDT setup with Tempest Shield.
8: I found it excessive to run increased crits on my orb of storms and just ran COH Flammability + Blind. Less casting, and a 50% chance for the enemy to whiff an attack.

The only unique I’d say you should definitely add to the build is Torchoak Step. They’re budget boots on the trade league (and are a common drop) with a lot of placement speed and some damage reflect on taking damage. Since you’re going to be constantly recasting your totems anyways, you can unspec out of some of the resistance nodes and that placement speed cluster past the life wheel, freeing up 7 points to put somewhere else. 7 passive points for an item slot is definitely worth it, considering it even gives you decent movespeed.

I was really drawn to this build because Shockwave totem is something I never touched. Going to try it during the Metamorph league and probably farm Izaro for a good while.

Hey, first of all thank you for the honest and kind feedback. You’ve made great conclusions and I’d like to reply to some of them.

    Problems:

    1. This is mentioned in the gearing section in the Note: Once you have picked up the Blood Magic keystone you should drop Arcane Surge Support Arcane Surge Support since you are not spending Mana anymore.

    2. Zealotry Zealotry can be better in some cases but if your gems are low level and you do not have enough base damage in general Anger Anger is a better choice.

    3. Please specify, if this includes point 4 and its mentions about the minion nodes I’d agree they better fit in a trade league. But after all Bound Fossil Bound Fossil are not hard to find at all even in an SSF environment.

    4. (Answered in 3.)

    5. Investing into Endurance charges can be a great idea, it includes another layer or defense but requires you to be more active.

    6. The golem setup is just a flashy idea that can definitely be useful in most boss fights. Resummoning the dummy for a second should not be that problematic even in the middle of the fight while the boss is kept bussy with your totems.

    7. Zombies will die extremely easy due to the nature of the build and not enough investment into Minion Life, Minion Life Regeneration and Minion Resistances. There is definitely room for more gem setups and I agree with that as I add more recommended gem setups, it is still a work in progress, pardon me for that.

    8. Modifying builds to your liking is essential for every player I think, this is what everyone should do once they have enough game knowledge.

I am glad you have decided to try out Shockwave Totem Shockwave Totem, it is an amazing skill and I have liked it since its release, although it was a bit weak. After the last buff in patch 3.6 it received a lot of extra damage though and can now deal with bosses too.

    Hey, nice build!

I have one question. Doesn’t Ancestral Bond (you can’t deal damage yourself) prevent orb of storms from doing damage and therefore we can never get Ele Overload to trigger? Or does PoE allow you to “crit” for 0 damage??

Hey, I understand what you mean and it is kind of logical not to work but it does. Even if you Crit for 0 damage it still procs Ele Overload.
