Guide Format

This build guide is split over multiple pages, both to prevent it from getting too long, as well as to help you better find the information you are looking for. In addition to the current page, which presents general information about the build and also contains a Leveling and FAQ section, we have the following pages:

Introduction

Siege Ballista Siege Ballista is a ranged attack Totem that has very high base damage and pierces enemies by default. This makes building around the skill very easy, since the damage potential is very high. The 50% less attack speed multiplier is countered by a decent Bow with high APS and things like Faster Attacks Support Faster Attacks Support.

We choose the Raider, because even though we have at least 5 Ballistas at our disposal we can still generate Frenzy charges (which improves Ballista’s damage by a great deal) and deal damage on our own.

Build Summary

The build focuses on scaling Elemental damage with Attacks. There are no mandatory items except for Rain of Splinters Rain of Splinters, which should cost a couple of Chaos Orb Chaos Orbs for a very good roll; this jewel will allow you not run Greater Multiple Projectiles Support Greater Multiple Projectiles Support and use a damage multiplier instead. You can use Windripper Windripper or any rare elemental Bow with high Attack Speed and good Critical Chance; even a simple Storm Cloud Storm Cloud will carry you a long way.

Pros & Cons

Pros

+ Hardcore viable
+ Decent clear speed
+ Fun and different playstyle

Cons

- Feels clunky in some indoor maps

Playstyle

Offensively, dropping a set of Ballistas is enough to clear a whole screen. You can keep up Frenzy charges with Frenzy Frenzy in order to increase your damage output.

Defensively, reaching a high Life pool with this build should be easily achieved. A combination of Acrobatics, Phase Acrobatics, Arrow Dancing, and Vaal Grace Vaal Grace will keep you safe in sticky situations.

For Playstyle, keep your distance and place your Siege Ballista Siege Ballistas between you and the monsters. Against bosses make sure to keep up the maximum number of your Ballistas and hit the boss with your Frenzy skill in order to keep up Frenzy charges.

Passive tree

Here is the endgame passive skill tree for the build.

For more information, be sure to check out the Passive Skill Tree page.

Ascendancy, Bandits, and Pantheons

Our Ascendancy, Bandit, and Pantheon Power page goes into detail about all the choices you need to make in these regards.

Gems

We go over all of the gem links this build uses in the end-game on our Gem Link page.

Gear Summary / TL;DR

These items provide a good balance between offense and defense and are enough to deal with the endgame, although there is definitely a room for improvement. Please ensure you read the Gear, Jewels and Flasks page in its entirety.

Our recommendation:

Item Slot Item Name
Head Starkonja's Head Starkonja's Head
Amulet Rare Amulet
Chest Hyrri's Ire Hyrri's Ire
Gloves Tombfist Tombfist
Boots Rare Boots
Belt Rare Belt
Rings Rare Rings
Weapon Windripper Windripper
Quiver Rare Quiver

Leveling

As a reminder, we have several guides to help you level up a character.

The build should be leveled with a powerful leveling skill like Vaal Rain of Arrows Vaal Rain of Arrows in combination with unique Bows like Storm Cloud Storm Cloud.

Leveling Trees

This is the early passive skill tree.

Useful Leveling Unique Items

As you begin a new character, there are few unique items that can boost your power exponentially. Tabula Rasa Tabula Rasa allows you to have a 6-Linked skill as early as you get the gems. Wanderlust Wanderlust gives a decent movement speed, which will make your leveling that much more efficient. Goldrim Goldrim provides a lot of elemental resistances, this will let you worry less about gearing when approaching certain Act encounters. A simple Storm Cloud Storm Cloud will carry you a long way.

If you are a new player (or if this is your first character for the league), then note that obtaining these items will be very difficult, if not impossible. They are rare drops, which you can otherwise only acquire if you have saved up currency, so do not focus on them too much, and instead simply look for items that match the affix priorities listed in the gearing section above.

Gem Progression

Using Tabula Rasa Tabula Rasa will allow you to have 6-Link gem setups early on, which is why we show such examples below. If you cannot get Tabula Rasa (or another item with a 6-Link), then simply prioritize the first gems in each link provided below.

In order to acquire gems that are not available to your class as a quest reward, simply ask a friend to buy them off vendors for you, or buy them yourself from Sioasa in The Library in Act III Library.

From level 1, you should use the following link.

  1. Ice Shot Ice Shot
  2. Pierce Support Pierce Support
  3. Onslaught Support Onslaught Support

At level 4, you can add Mirage Archer Support Mirage Archer Support to your Ice Shot Ice Shot link. You can also pick Frost Bomb Frost Bomb for additional single target damage output.

By level 8, your Ice Shot Ice Shot link should look like this.

  1. Ice Shot Ice Shot
  2. Pierce Support Pierce Support
  3. Onslaught Support Onslaught Support
  4. Mirage Archer Support Mirage Archer Support
  5. Added Cold Damage Support Added Cold Damage Support
  6. Added Lightning Damage Support Added Lightning Damage Support

At level 10, you should add Blink Arrow Blink Arrow.

At level 12, you can start using your signature skill, Siege Ballista Siege Ballista. It will replace your Ice Shot Ice Shot link.

  1. Siege Ballista Siege Ballista
  2. Lesser Multiple Projectiles Support Lesser Multiple Projectiles Support
  3. Added Cold Damage Support Added Cold Damage Support
  4. Added Lightning Damage Support Added Lightning Damage Support

At level 16, you should add Herald of Ice Herald of Ice.

By level 18, your Siege Ballista Siege Ballista should look like this.

  1. Siege Ballista Siege Ballista
  2. Elemental Damage with Attacks Support Elemental Damage with Attacks Support
  3. Faster Attacks Support Faster Attacks Support
  4. Added Cold Damage Support Added Cold Damage Support
  5. Added Lightning Damage Support Added Lightning Damage Support

FAQ

What maps are impossible to do/annoying to deal with?

The build can do all map mods, but there are some nasty ones. You will need a Hybrid Flask for No Regeneration maps. Ballistas will most likely one-shot themselves against Elemental Reflect, which will be very annoying.

Conclusion

Shoot down enemies with your powerful Siege Ballista Totems. The Siege Ballista Raider is a great alternative to all the Spell-based Totem builds.

Hello there, i have just started playing PoE in the last few days and i rely enjoy it so far. I have just unlocked the scion and i have had my eye on the build since i started playing because i love the idea. This is probably a noob question but here goes, i have started the character and decided to do the rush build to Ancestral Bond however now at lvl 9 i have realized that i may have done something incorrectly as leveling up the siege ballista is not possible due to a lack of dexterity in the pacive skill tree. is this a problem? because i haven’t been able to do any ascendancy ofc because of being a new character and not having completed any of the challenges. Thanks in advance, Edinator.

Hey, stat issues in Path of Exile can easily be solved with proper itemization. For example, you can equip a Jade Amulet Jade Amulet in order to gain up to 30 Dexterity early on. You should not worry about that at all. Hope you enjoy the build, ask anything you need to know, you will have to learn a lot about the game for sure.

Hello again, hope you are having a good day. Sorry to come back with another question however here it is. I have completed the first part of the skill tree, so i have multiple totems and the buffs for them. however i have discovered that i will need to do the ascendancy challenges 3 times to get enough points to start leveling up from the ranger start point. i currently haven’t got any new perks for the last while and i have 10+ skill points that i am waiting to allocate. Basically am i going to hit a wall where my damage falls of, or i get one-shot killed by enemies, or is getting enough ascendancy points achievable whilst saving up the points. Thanks again for the help with this. Loving it so far, and these guides are grate.

Edit: So i have just tried the second temple run to get 2 more points, got to the second boss fight and got 1 shot, if you have any recommendations it would be appreciated.

Hey, for the Cruel Lab I recommend having around having 2-2.5k Life along with capped resistances. Things like Granite Flask Granite Flask, Jade Flask Jade Flask and Basalt Flask Basalt Flask should also greatly improve your survivability, you should also keep in mind that Totem builds combined with precise movement will result in a very easy Lab completion. I also suggest learning about Labyrinth’s different phases since you might be buffing Izaro tremendeously without even knowing it. If you have any specific questions about your gear or passive tree, please provide a link to your public PoE profile and I would be glad to help.

Thank you that would be great. i managed to do the labyrinth by just as you said, keeping moving around him and letting the turrets do the work. here is my build though because any tips would be appreciated:

    http://poe-profile.info/profile/Edinator101?realm=pc

the mane thing i am feeling like i need is a 6-link of some sort so i can finish all the gems for the turrets. i was thinking about buying a Tubula Rasa from poe.trade but i need 4 more chaos orbs for there prices, also i am trying to get as low a level one as possible so i don’t have to level characters up to 70-80 before i can use it. (also the summon skeleton skill is just for fun, have spare slots :)

    Regards Edinator.

Edit: Sorry just realized this is a new post not a reply, my bad!

Hey, basically your whole gear needs to get replaced. You should definitely not be using Quill Rain Quill Rain and use any other Bow instead. Please look at the Gear section for recommendations in every slot. When it comes to the Skeletons, it is definitely a fun skill but it has no synergy with the build whatsoever and you should be doing things like building up Frenzy charges with Frenzy Frenzy instead, or cursing enemies with things like Assassin's Mark Assassin's Mark, Projectile Weakness Projectile Weakness or Elemental Weakness Elemental Weakness.

Hey, you biggest damage drawback is definitely the Bow, try getting a new one as soon as possible. Something like Storm Cloud Storm Cloud will work much better at little to no cost.

Is there a reason why you do not use the Iron Commander bow? It gives good life to the totems and placement speed, has crit and some attack speed plus you get an additional totem once you reach 200 dex.

Hey, the Iron Commander Iron Commander and Dex stacking will be a whole another build. Even though I’ve played it that way myself I’d say using a rare high Attack Speed Bow is much more beneficial for the build.

Hey there, thanks for posting this build, I want to try it in CotA but I have a question related to the changes, will you update the passive tree tomorrow when they will release all the info about CotA? I am interested especially in the tree because I think people are still waiting to see the placement of the Ballista nodes. Thanks.

Hey, I am definitely looking forward to updating the build and yes we need GGG to make the announcements. I will work on it as soon as possible and the build will definitely be up to date prior to the start of 3.9.

Hi, what is the main reason this build is not listed as a league starter?

The build will work well for a league-starter. After reworking the guide (which was earlier today) I did not change Tags, which is a mistake on my end. Thank you for that, will be fixed shortly.

Hi! thanks for all builds, this website its awesome! i have any question… this build would works with Galvanic arrow in Ballista Totems? I would change Hyrris for Inpulsar, Windripper for Voltaxic rift or in early league, Storm cloud/Tempest and all cold damage to lighning damage, but… the passive tree would be valid, right?

Yep, you can definitely do that!
