Introduction
Spark Bloodmage is one of the most enjoyable builds I’ve ever played. Screen-wide damage and screen-wide freezes, paired with a 1 button playstyle, make this an S-Tier mapping character with surprisingly good single target as well.
This build focuses on using Spark with Cold Infusions to have triple damage and almost double the projectiles per cast when compared to the regular version. This, in combination with a Widowhail unique bow, gives us an incredible amount of projectile speed for consistent damage uptime and massive screen-wide coverage.
Strengths and Weaknesses
- Less than 1 divine orb budget to start.
- Screen-wide coverage.
- One-button playstyle.
- Not super-tanky early on.
Build Mechanics
Our main skill in this build is Spark and the goal is to have 100% uptime on cold infusions so that every cast is the cold-infused variant. We achieve this through a combination of
Siphon Elements,
Frost Bomb, and
Snap slotted into a
Cast on Critical.
For Bosses or tanky Rares we also apply a powerful passive tree boosted exposure through Frost Bomb and curse through
Elemental Weakness. If you have any questions or need some help come on by my Twitch and I will answer every question you may have.
Skill Rotation

Skill and Support Gems
This Spark Blood Mage build uses the following Skill Gems and Support Gems, listed in order of socket priority.
IMPORTANT READ!: A Penetrating Quiver Base is a CORE item now since it was bugfixed to correctly apply its pierces when used with a widowhail bow. This means that if you do not have a penetrating quiver base then you need to replace Blindside with
Ricochet III in your
Spark and
Blind II with
Harmonic Remnants II in your
Cast on Critical setup.
Ascendancy
Blood Mage is the recommended ascendancy for this build and is the best choice. The Critical Strike Chance gained is massive, and defensives are solid. Deadeye can be another viable option, though the passive tree you’d have to make yourself.
Blood Mage
- Vitality Siphon – 10% of Spell Damage Leeched as Life. Powerful recovery layer.
- Sunder The Flesh – Base Critical Hit Chance for Spells is 15%.
- Grasping Wounds – 25% of Life Loss from Hits is prevented, then that much Life is lost over 4 seconds instead.
- Crimson Power – Gain Energy Shield from equipped Body Armour as extra maximum Life.
Passive Skill Tree and PoB – Level 88+
This Tree is the Blood Magic Keystone version, which converts all your mana costs to life costs. Its recommended you swap to this version when you are around level 88-90.
Use the following URL for advanced details and calculations on the Spark Blood Mage (Keep in mind that POB is still in development for Early Access, and the stats on this sheet are not representative of the actual damage or survivability).
For more instructions on downloading the app, check the guide on Path of Building 2.
Passive Skill Tree and POB – Below Level 88
This is the Mana based version. I recommend you path for this tree if you are level 88 or below, as the travel for the blood magic keystone is quite long.
Gear
IMPORTANT! A Penetrating Quiver base is a CORE item; we use it for all the piercing we need on Spark. If you do not have a penetrating quiver base, or if it is too expensive, that is ok. Just swap
Blindside for
Ricochet III in your
Spark setup and
Blind II for
Harmonic Remnants II in your
Cast on Critical setup until you can afford one.

High-Budget Setup
This Build is functional on a super-low budget. All you need to start is a call of the brotherhood unique ring, a widowhail with a decent roll, and a quiver with high projectile speed and +2 to the level of all projectile gems. That being said, there is an expensive endgame variant as well if you want to invest more into the build after completing the previous version, which I will talk about here.
Focus on working through the previous sections gear first. Once you start maxing out your character there and are ready to invest much more into the build you can aim for the following endgame setup.
This is the endgame gem setup. Here we begin making use of Atalui’s Bloodletting. An incredibly powerful support with a massive mana/life cost multiplier that we will need to compensate for.
Use this support gem in combination with a Undying Hate in tribute to Tecrod, the number on the jewel does not matter, only that it is a Tecrod variant. This will give us the Sacrifice of Blood Keystone, which causes us to gain a massive amount of regeneration based on the life we are spending.
Now we also need to reduce our cost by using a Tecrod’s Gaze in a pair of gloves with the Essence of Horror Modifier “100% increased effect of socketed items”. This severely reduces the cost of our Spark and allows us to cast without worry. Before you equip a pair of these gloves, you can use a
Efficiency II over
Prolonged Duration II in the following gem setup to compensate:
