Eye of Winter Saboteur Build Guide (PoE Scourge 3.16)

This build guide is a collaboration with Path of Matth who is the original designer of the build. It is one of the craziest low budget league starter builds designed to drop down the hardest end-game bosses with little to no currency invested at all.

Below you can see the build in action from PoM’s YouTube Guide. Do note that the video might be outdated in terms of information, and you should always look at this guide to make sure you have the updated version.

In this section I will outline the pros, cons, & the general play-style. This will allow you to determine if the build is for you or not!

+ League Starter – The gearing process for this build is so simple & straight forward it works extremely well as a league starter.

+ Bosser – The damage output this build can achieve even in the lowest of low budget is completely absurd.

+ Miner Play Style – The play-style as shown in the video is extremely satisfying when you detonate the army of mines and watch a boss get instantly zerged down to 0 HP.

Miner Play Style – Clearing with a miner build is not as satisfying as the bossing play-style, there’s a lot of throwing mines down and detonating them frequently.

Cluster – For end-game it is important to pick up a cluster jewel or 2, these clusters can very easily be self-crafted which will be covered in this guide. Quick note here is that the crafting process only requires a handful of Orb of Alteration Orb of Alteration, Regal Orb Regal Orb & Orb of Scouring Orb of Scouring so it’s still very cheap!

The build clears maps by throwing mines on the ground and detonating them frequently which can get rather spammy, however, once you encounter a boss you pre-cast a set of different abilities then mass out 19 mines which you’ll detonate in a beautiful sequence which will ramp up in damage output thanks to High-Impact Mine support which significantly increases the damage done for each mine detonated that hits the enemy to ramp up an absurd amount of damage.

Damage scaling for this build is all about stacking mines & putting up debuffs on the boss to make it take a ton of extra damage. Hydrosphere is abused for the end-game content thanks to Snakepit Snakepit to allow projectiles that misses the boss to chain from the Hydrosphere back to the boss significantly increasing damage output.

Defensive scaling is handled via stacking up the new Spell Suppression which we are later converting via Acrobatics keystone in to spell dodge reaching around 34% Spell Dodge without any investment towards scaling this further via gear. To deal with attacks hitting us we are using Evasion, and a lot of it. Grace aura is being used to further enhance this defensive layer and with the 3.16 patch evasion as well as armor will be significantly better allowing us to have similar defensive scaling as we used to have back in 3.15.

The PoB community fork created by Localidentity is the only version being kept up to date, so make sure you have the correct version: PoB Community Fork.

Eye of Winter Saboteur Ascendancy, Bandits & Pantheon Powers

The leveling experience with this build is among the smoothest you can find as we are playing as a Shadow ascending to become a Saboteur we have easy access to nodes early on that will scale the damage output the build will do from start to finish. There are almost no nodes that we will respec out of during the leveling progression.

Act 1 – 3

A baseline effective way of leveling in the early acts is to utilize Freezing Pulse, Stormblast Mines, Frost Bomb, Frost Blink & Orb of Storms. A useful tool to help with tougher enemies including Brutus is to include a Holy Flame Totem which not only deals damage but also works as a decoy for the boss(es) to hit rather than yourself.
Level 1-8 will use the following gems:

Once you reach level 8 you are able to get support gems in the form of Added Lightning & Added Cold, this is where Stormblast Mines starts to take over and become the main source of damage that you’ll deal in your progression through these acts:

The Aura decision comes in Act 2, which is when we enable Herald of Ice Herald of Ice, Herald of Thunder Herald of Thunder & Herald of Ash Herald of Ash.

Act 3+

In Act 3 after killing General Gravicius we can purchase Eye of Winter from the gem vendor in town allowing us to start playing the build the way it was supposed to be played! The following set-up would be ideal during the progression before you get access to the higher level gems you’ll be using for the end-game set-up:

The Aura changes will be to keep Herald of Ice but consider removing the other heralds to open up your mana pool depending on how high mana cost / reservation your mines take from you as you’re progressing through the campaign. In some cases you might want to consider still using 1 or 2 of the previous heralds if possible on your mana, opening up your mana pool helps a lot to sustain the mana problems which is normally solved with mana flask(s) or preferably an “Enduring” prefix rolled mana flask. So avoid reserving too much mana to keep being able to deploy your damage output.

At this point of your progression you simply just need to follow the end-game tree & gem-links to further enhance your character throughout the acts in to the hardest end-game content.

To guarantee that my guides are tools you can utilize to enhance your experience in Path of Exile, all you need to do is post your question in the comments and I will personally attend to them as soon as possible.

As much as I love making build guides, it is very crucial in a game like Path of Exile that you play the game the way you enjoy playing it. With that said, if you’ve made any tweaks to the build compared to what I’m showing in this guide I would love if you’d posted it in the comments! It’s an effective way to show other approaches and it helps me grow as a build guide creator!

I hope you found the build guide useful and I wish you all many Exalted Orb Exalted Orb drops!

You have an error in the flask window for diamond window, it says “This flask is here to increase our critical strike chance with our Dark Pact”. This isn’t the Dark pact build!

Thank you, it’s been adjusted! :D
Took the template from my Dark Pact build ;)

I’m so glad that collaborations are becoming popular. Having 2 sets of trusted eyes on a build before I try it really gives me alot of confidence in the build. I have 3 questions about options in this build:

1: Are there any other cold skills that could be considered such as glacial cascasde for clearing?

2: for map clearing, would chain/fork offer better clear for less dps.

3: putting it into PoB, the tremor rod is a massive downgrade from the 2 cheap wands. Is this correct? I thought the tremor rod 6 linked would be really good.

The increased damage taken makes me want to look at options that would freeze more with a slower clear speed if possible.

    Thanks for a great build.

    1) Eye of Winter does very well actually in terms of AoE coverage, I doubt the other options would be worth the troubles to swap around for

    2) Faster Projectiles would be the ideal choice for a larger area coverage essentially resulting in what you’re asking for

    3) That is correct, you’d have to switch out the High-Impact mine if you run Tremor Rod as it is providing Blastchain mines but in the end cheap wands will be superior to tremor rod

What will the upgrade path be for gearing? I don’t see the high budget option, there’s no way we use tabula rasa forever right?

Yea, was wondering the same, why doesn’t Matth show the high budget gear in his videos too ? Every part of the gear is actually quite easy to obtain and I doubt that we will kill Ubers with just a simple tabula rasa…

  7. GhazzyTV

We are actually killing ubers in a tabula with this build. So literally anything will work. I believe Matth was running a +2 corrupted tabula but the Skin of the Loyal would be a suitable balanced upgrade on the chest for example. Don’t underestimate the stupid levels of damage this build brings to the table.

Just tested it, seems to work fine for me. Which PoB are you having issues with? Make sure there are no spaces before or after the link when you copy it!

    Worked now.

seems like I really had a space after link. thank u

  10. GhazzyTV

You’re not the first and far from the last to encounter that. PoB is space sensitive ;)

Why notes on PoB have different leveling with different gems , main skill and pantheons than this on poe-vault ?

  12. GhazzyTV

Tests done prior to final version, both should essentially work. There are multiple ways of leveling this build! :)

Hello again, there is something i dont understand, how are we able to play with grace + skitterbots if it takes around 80 of our mana. We are then able to throw just 10 mines and then can’t do anything than detonates.
Is there something to do about it ?

FYI, the “finished build” link http://poeurl.com/dqVI does not work.

Just tested the link and it works fine for me? (for the tree that is, it is identical to the PoB tree)

I just manually entered the URL in my phone web browser. It works. Perhaps one of the multiple ad-blocker / anti-tracker plugins on my PC’s chrome browser doesn’t like poeurl links. xD

  15. GhazzyTV

The PoB is showing with 19x mines being deployed (max mines). Make sure you have all mana reservation requirements from the ascendancy nodes & masteries from the tree. After that it’s all about your character level to make room for the mana. If you have a 6-Link very early it can be tricky to fit 19 mines. As long as you don’t link your auras with any support gems that would increase the reservation cost of the auras you shouldn’t have any problems though. If you’re still having issues could you provide me with your PoB and I’ll personally take a look at it :)

Hey ghazzy can you check my build real quick? https://pastebin.com/uhmqnfVr

I feel like my damage is way too low as I struggle to finish league mechanic like Alva or Betrayal research. I also get instagibbed so fast on Scourge or Ritual. What do you suggest for me to improve it.

I’m stil on white map. I think getting Atziri step should helps survivability and I’m saving for it. My confusion is only on damage side on clearing maps and the like. Also what do I even do when the mobs doesn’t freeze?

  17. GhazzyTV

I took a quick look at the build and one of the big problems is lack of HP, evasion is almost at the cap with flasks up but life is too low! One of your rings has barely any at all, same goes for your helmet, belt & the shield if you want to keep using shield over dual wielding. Levels will absolutely help of course. Resistances are looking good though :)

Spell Dodge is entirely from Spell Suppression so yes getting more of that will keep you safe® vs spell damage, evasion will take care of the rest.

Regarding your damage output your weapon needs upgrading and once you’ve sorted your other gear pieces you can switch that shield out for even more damage. Gem lvls are important for this build.

I wanted to ask about the atziri boots since the more evasion % is now gone so our cap is like 25 k only with skin of the loyal instead of like 34 35k is that enough? Like 75% evade chance and 34% spell dodge?
