Passive Skill Tree and PoB Link

This is the Endgame Goal Passive Skill Tree for the build. We focus on picking up all the efficient Impale, Sword and Crit nodes along the way, as well as a ton of health, some defensive clusters, such as “Soul of Steel”, as well as all the relevant Keystones (Call to Arms, Wind Dancer, and lastly Point Blank).

You can find the Path of Building for the Endgame Goal right here. This PoB was created using the PoB Community Fork, managed by LocalIdentity. If you are using the official Path of Building, developed by OpenArl, you might not be able to access all the relevant information. We recommend switching over to the Community Fork for the best experience.

This is the Leveling Passive Skill Tree for the build. Try to aim to pick up these nodes FIRST, before moving onto the Endgame Goal Tree.

Make sure to read the items and skill group names for additional information.

Gems

Shattering Steel Shattering Steel OR Splitting Steel Splitting Steel will be our signature skill, which should ideally be used in a 6-Link. For mobility, you should use Leap Slam Leap Slam. Blood Rage Blood Rage is an offensive buff that should be active all the time once you have enough Life Regeneration to sustain it. Vaal Molten Shell Vaal Molten Shell provides great amount of on-demand damage mitigation.

Your ideal buff setup looks like this: Pride Pride, Flesh and Stone Flesh and Stone, Dread Banner Dread Banner, and Herald of Purity Herald of Purity, in addition to Enduring Cry Enduring Cry.

For all the gem links we provide below, keep in mind that we list the gems in order of priority, meaning that if you lack the required number of sockets to fit all the gems, the first ones to drop are the ones at the bottom. Also note that in-game, as long as the sockets are linked, it makes no difference at all what order the gems are placed in.

Shattering/Splitting Steel (6-Link)

Shattering Steel Shattering Steel and Splitting Steel Splitting Steel are ranged attacks. For this particular build we dual wield One-Handed Swords, which allows us to stack Impales very fast. We recommend one link that works great for both clearing and single target. We will only be using ONE of the two Steel abilities, but I don’t know which one performs better yet, without being able to test them. The exact same setup should work perfectly fine for both abilities, however. So simply gem-swap them and figure out which one you prefer!

  1. Shattering Steel Shattering Steel OR Splitting Steel Splitting Steel
  2. Impale Support Impale Support
  3. Vicious Projectiles Support Vicious Projectiles Support
  4. Brutality Support Brutality Support
  5. Slower Projectiles Support Slower Projectiles Support
  6. Maim Support Maim Support OR Greater Multiple Projectiles Support Greater Multiple Projectiles Support

I highly highly recommend Greater Multiple Projectiles Support Greater Multiple Projectiles Support for your Shattering Steel Shattering Steel setup, once you get yourself a 5-link. It makes the ability an unfathomable amount better at clearing maps.

For your end-game setup, featuring the slow iAS weapons Paradoxica Paradoxica and The Saviour The Saviour, the following will likely be our best-in-slot gem setup:

  1. Shattering Steel Shattering Steel
  2. Impale Support Impale Support
  3. Brutality Support Brutality Support
  4. Slower Projectiles Support Slower Projectiles Support
  5. Maim Support Maim Support
  6. Greater Multiple Projectiles Support Greater Multiple Projectiles Support

As Vicious Projectiles Support Vicious Projectiles Support applies a 10% LESS attack speed multiplier, it heavily impacts the attack speed of these slow base weapons. It is better to switch it out for something else, for QOL purposes.

Ancestral Protector, Blood Rage & Portal (3-Socket)

Ancestral Protector Ancestral Protector will be your boss buff, which you can place down to gain a large boost in your attack speed for a short time. Place it together with your Blood Rage Blood Rage and Portal Portal gems into one of your weapons. Use your Blood Rage on cooldown. You want to make sure it is active 24/7.

  1. Ancestral Protector Ancestral Protector
  2. Blood Rage Blood Rage
  3. Portal Portal

Leap Slam (4-Link)

Leap Slam Leap Slam is your main mobility skill which will let you dodge lethal game mechanics and make you more time-efficient in general, by allowing you to cover great distances very rapidly and also jump over pit-falls or other environmental blocks.

  1. Leap Slam Leap Slam
  2. Fortify Support Fortify Support
  3. Faster Attacks Support Faster Attacks Support
  4. Blood Magic Support Blood Magic Support OR Endurance Charge on Melee Stun Support Endurance Charge on Melee Stun Support OR Culling Strike Support Culling Strike Support

Vaal Molten Shell (4-Link)

Vaal Molten Shell Vaal Molten Shell provides great damage mitigation when needed; the skill must be activated manually for maximum efficiency. Be advised, that despite VMS (and as an extension MS) being linked with Cast when Damage Taken Support Cast when Damage Taken Support, you will still have to activate it manually, as it will be too high level to automatically trigger. We simply make use of the Increased Duration Support Increased Duration Support socketed in the same 4-link, to apply it to both the Enfeeble Enfeeble being triggered by CWDT, as well as our VMS/MS when we use it ourselves.

  1. Vaal Molten Shell Vaal Molten Shell
  2. Increased Duration Support Increased Duration Support
  3. Cast when Damage Taken Support Cast when Damage Taken Support (level 3)
  4. Enfeeble Enfeeble (level 7)

Other Gems

Pride Pride, Flesh and Stone Flesh and Stone, Dread Banner Dread Banner and Herald of Purity Herald of Purity is your ideal buff setup; you will likely require at least one level 4 Enlighten Support Enlighten Support in order to properly fit everything, depending on your Mana pool. If you don’t have the Mana yet to sustain all 4 buffs, remove the Herald of Purity.

Blood Rage Blood Rage should be active all the time, same with Enduring Cry Enduring Cry. Simply put the cry on your left-click and it will automatically trigger on CD. As we have the “Call to Arms” keystone, the cast is instant and does not interrupt your overall play at all.

Make sure to pick up a Poacher's Mark Poacher's Mark as soon as possible (“Lost in Love” Act 3), to greatly enhance your single-target damage. Simply mark the boss you’re fighting and you’ll have a WAY easier time, as it provides a great deal of flat damage, overwhelm and life/mana on hit throughout the fight.

Main Page / TL;DR

That’s great to hear. The build will definitely be updated often and you can also watch LunaWolve playing it!

I am pretty hyped for the new steel skills. Looking forward to how this turns out. Quick note, I know it is a work in progress. You have an Axe tree, and swords as main weapons throughout. I get it, as axes to get through the acts are superior, BUT… you might want to clarify in the guide or present a final sword tree. Just trying to be helpful – and good luck!

OH DAMN. I just realised the links all lead to my Impale Cyclone guide for some reason?!

It will be fixed immediately, thanks for pointing this out.

Right now all the buttons link to the Impale Cyclone guide. Please use the Table of Contents on the right, to navigate to the proper sub-pages of the STEEL guide, until it’s fixed! :<

Very nice Luna! What order do you recommend for upgrading gear in – save up right away for the BiS weapons or try to upgrade rings/craft a chest first, something else?

I’d recommend going for some in-between gear before saving up for the big spenders (Saviour, etc.).

    Order of operations:

    1. 5-link chest piece
    2. Weapon Upgrades to around 350pDPS (main/off)
    3. Get a good amulet (crit multi, flat phys, life, stats)
    4. 6-link corrupted chest piece
    5. Weapon Upgrades to around 420pDPS or listed Unique Weapons (main/off)

And upgrading the rest of the gear as you try to hit those milestones, making sure elemental resistances are capped at all times.

Just letting you know that the leveling skill tree link gives a page not found, the other skill tree links do work for me

I’m new in Poe and wanted to ask if it worth it to put impale support with splitting steel even though it has impale chance in itself?

Hey there! Welcome to Path of Exile, hope you’ll love it as much as I do!

To your question: Yes, it’s absolutely worthwhile.

The main benefit of the Impale Support (outside of the impale chance, of course) is the “Impale Effect”.

Impale Effect is an extremely rare stat, that only exists on a handful of items, skills and passives in the game. While it’s rare, it’s equally as powerful, however, as it acts as a multiplicative multiplier to all of your impale damage.

To give you an easy example:

    • Assume we deal 1000 physical damage with our attacks and have a 100% impale chance.

Our Impale now has 100 damage (10% of the pre-mitigation physical damage dealt) stored. With a maximum number of 5 impales (default), that means we deal 50% more damage than normal, once we have all 5 of them stacked up, with every consecutive hit. (Math: 1000 + (1000 × 0.1 × 5) = 1500 dmg)

If, however, we have 100% Impale Effect on top of that, the calculations look like this instead:

    1000 + (1000 × (0.1 + [0.1 × 1]) x 5 = 1000 + (1000 × 0.2 × 5) = 2000 dmg

What this means is that impale effect directly scales the “more” multiplier our impale applies.

With 100% increased Impale Effect, our Impale is TWICE as strong.

That’s why we want the Impale Support Impale Support, as it provides 49% Impale Effect, on top of the other benefits it provides.

you say to have an Enduring Cry Enduring Cry on the left click, do you still suggest that considering you can now get 0 endurance charges if there are no monsters nearby.

I still think it’s the proper way to use it, as we’re very starved on hotkeys already, with the addition of “Call of Steel” to our hotkey bar.

We’ll also gain a lot of Endurance Charges from our Leapslam setup, so Enduring Cry is not our only source of them.

i think i will try this one as starter, if it sucks i can easy switch to cyclone impale the gear is nearly the same and the tree too. i can’t be worse than my “elehit” starter without the combatfocus jewels or a good bow..boy that was a new record for me with over 100 deaths until mapping.

    Hey LunaWolve,

im really looking forward to this and the new steel skills, this is gonna be my league starter.
Ive found some things in the guide you might wanna clean up tho.
    1. The “Back to main Page” Buttons redirect to your cyclone guide
    2. The leveling skill tree and the endgame skilltree on the main page are way different to the pob and skill trees on the extra page, also different ascendency
    3. On the main page you say you take axes with the notes and resolute technique, which you dont use in the different tree where also take hella crit

Im assuming that the other tree with RT and Fortitude is still from the cyclone build or an older version

is this build ok going dual wield glad with max block?
I’d also like to take some leech nodes (Vaal pact, vitality void etc.); is that a good idea?

Probably not, as you wouldn’t be able to make use of the bleed nodes, because we don’t want corpse remove as we need corpses for call of steel.

I know everything about this build is a work in progress but are will you be posting guidance on the priority of passive skill nodes to take after the initial leveling process?

It would absolutely work as a max-block glad, yes. However, make sure to not take the bleed-explosion nodes, as you require the corpses for “Call of Steel”. I usually don’t like the leech nodes, as they’re superficial recovery at best, normally Enduring Cry + the normal amount of life leech + life regen is enough to keep you alive.

There is an end-game skill tree available on the passive tree subpage. Unless you’re asking for something else?

If so, my apologies, but I’m not entirely sure what you mean with “priority of passive skill nodes after initial leveling”, outside of an endgame tree.
