All Around Miner - Glacial Cascade Mines Saboteur Build Guide (PoE Expedition 3.15)

Expedition League “Updates” & “Disclaimers”

While I generally put a lot of emphasis on updating all of my guides before a new league starts, I have decided against doing so at the moment. Many of the changes that came with PoE’s 3.15 Expedition league launch have pretty severe gameplay impact, which is incredibly hard to predict without having the appropriate software updated (like Path of Building). Therefore, I will give all my guides a pass and point out the obvious changes. Everything outside of this paragraph will stay untouched for 3.15 for now and will be updated accordingly over the course of the next weeks. This means that the information in this paragraph always supersedes anything written in the guide. Build updates will be prioritized in order of their popularity.

These are the changes I would undoubtedly make to this build:

  • I would play around with dropping Blastchain Mine Support Blastchain Mine Support for High-Impact Mine Support High-Impact Mine Support because it’s less reliant on pre-loading as many traps as possible and since mana costs went up by a lot, I’d argue it could be problematic to find a solution to mana.
  • Drop Blade Blast Blade Blast from trigger as it no longer gives unnerve. You could potentially replace this with a Bear Trap if you want to bother throwing that out on bosses for a 5-8% DPS increase.

Summary

Well, everyone lost a fair chunk of their damage. I still think this build can preload about a million DPS and remains a decent amount tanky. It wont be anything near the miner we’re used to but it has survivability and acceptable DPS. I would definitely think this is one of the stronger archetypes out there in 3.15.

Introduction

Glacial Cascade Glacial Cascade and Miners have always walked hand in hand. Before its nerfs in 3.6 Synthesis League, it was always one of the strongest bossers in the game and often picked as a League-starter because of it. However, the nerfs that happened in Synthesis League did hurt the build quite a lot and the meta shifted more towards Arc or Ball Lightning mines instead. With the newfound buffs in 3.12 Heist League, the skill now finds itself completely fine again and is probably up there with the other best miner skills available damage-wise. In addition to that, Glacial Cascade Glacial Cascade got more coverage and thus better clear speed in this patch, whereas it already had superior clear to most other mining skills before. This made the build very much an all around viable build that packs a punch in almost every scenario.

While Glacial Cascade no longer is a build that vaporizes a boss in a matter of seconds, it still gets the job done rather quickly. In return, you get a build that still clears the entire screen at once while playing a fairly tanky miner build. The build gets to around 6,000 Health while maintaining very decent Dodge and Spell Dodge chance. This effectively means you almost never get hit and when you do so, there’s enough mitigation to push you over the magic thresholds of tanking a hit.

When I played this build, I pushed it to level 95 before deciding I wanted to play something else but many others have pushed this to 100 effortlessly so I’d say that is reasonably doable. In a Hardcore environment, though, I would recommend perhaps dropping some of the damage, the Cluster(s), and try to grab even more Life, as you would want to play it extra safe. Through clever use of Vaal Grace Vaal Grace and Cast when Damage Taken Support Cast when Damage Taken Support on dangerous mechanics, you will hardly ever be in risky situations though!

Build Summary

Pros and Cons

Pros

+ Strong bosser with amazing clear
+ Requires no Uniques to function whatsoever
+ Therefore SSF & league-start viable
+ Loads of Regeneration & Dodge to make for a smooth playstyle
+ The build runs no awakened gems at all

Cons

Miners do require you to use two buttons (to detonate)
Since the build uses Blastchain Mines, you need to get used to Detonation sequencing

Map Modifiers to be Avoided

No Regeneration is incredibly annoying to run, as you’re relying on Life Regeneration quite a bit. If you insist on doing it anyway, you need to bring an Enduring Mana Flask to fix your Mana Regeneration.

Echoes of the Atlas Expansion Updates

As per most Ascendancy changes in the expansion, Saboteur only slightly got changed and mostly for the better. Where as Born in Shadow lost a little bit of increased Damage, Explosive Expert got a whopping 10% Crit Multiplier added to it! The main takeaway for Glacial Cascade is that the build loses 1 radius when you don’t have a tremendous amount of mines out due to the removal of Explosive Expert’s increased Area of Effect. That is a minor nerf because of GC’s mechanics but you will mostly not notice it. On the upside, Pyromaniac’s Life Regen has been made a lot more reliable as it now only requires half the detonations to get the 10% Life Regen.

Next up is Bomb Specialist which got some extra albeit conditional Area of Effect added to it so when it matters most you’ll still be overlapping the same amount of bursts as before. This node however also got some extra Mine Throwing Speed & Detonation Speed which both are incredibly nice to have! Lastly though, there is the nerf to your mines’ mana cost which actually is more impactful than one would think. This makes stacking up your maximum allowed mines harder when you’re pre-mining bosses but time will tell if the slight bump in damage makes up for the slight nerf in pre-mining. In case this becomes an annoyance, a single mana roll on gear of approximately 50 reverts this change entirely and really isn’t too problematic to find if it doesn’t already happen randomly.

Playstyle, Mechanics & Strengths

Since Glacial Cascade Glacial Cascade can now overlap damage, it is effectively scaled by picking up Radius / Increased Area of Effect in the tree. In practice that actually makes the spell a lot stronger than many anticipated before trying it out. Through these mechanical changes on the skill, it now again is very viable in every scenario. Obviously, there are many ways to scale up the damage a lot higher, but this guide in particular focuses on being available to everyone on a rather average budget instead of going for a, for example, Low-Life option where the gearing process is far less obvious and easy.

So the way a Miner works nowadays, and especially Miners that aim to be able to kill bosses, is that they use Minefield Support Minefield Support even for single target because they try to extend sequencing from Blastchain Mine Support Blastchain Mine Support. This basically means you are not supposed to spam the Detonate Mines button, and you’re trying to extend an ongoing sequence. While this is rather hard to explain in written text, one of our community’s resident Miner players, “Windz”, has a very good video on it. If you are not familiar with sequencing your mines, I advise you to go check out this video.

Other than that, the Playstyle and Mechanics of the build are rather straightforward. While mapping, you just spam your GC and Detonate buttons and see everything around you evaporate. Whenever you come across something dangerous, such as Metamorphs, Abyss, Legions, and what not, you use your Vaal Grace Vaal Grace to cap your character on Dodge and Spell Dodge. This will make you virtually immortal for the duration of the Vaal Aura to anything but one-shots. When you come across something that feels relatively tanky, you’re going to rely on a Cast when Damage taken setup to help you survive it. Other than using your Glacial Cascade and Detonate Mines, most things in this build are automated.

Through using both Shield Charge Shield Charge and Flame Dash Flame Dash, because you have the sockets for it and they can both be used optimally in different scenarios, you’re getting both the Arcane Surge Support Arcane Surge Support buff from Flame Dash as well as the Fortify Support Fortify Support buff from Shield Charge, making you deal more damage while being extra tanky. The strength of the build, other than its damage mitigation and incredible throughput, is that it usually is able to stay at relative range. It doesn’t require you to be in the fray too much, as stuff will mostly die very far away from you.

Passive Skill Tree, PoB, and Gem Links

You can find an optimized Path of Building here. Every build I release will use the community fork of Path of Building, which is maintained and updated in a much more regular fashion than the original one. You can find PoB’s Fork, by LocalIdentity, here.

If you are not comfortable with Path of Building, we also have a PoePlanner for you. Do note that PoE Planner does not support Cluster Jewels and some specific unique jewels and it is highly recommended you install Path of Building to follow builds most optimally.

More information about the Passive Skill Tree, as well as all the Gem Links can be found on our dedicated page.

Our Ascendancy, Bandit, and Pantheon Power page goes into detail about all the choices you need to make in these regards.

    Hi there,

I play on PS4 and Shield Charge is a struggle. What different gem setup would you recommend instead?
    Thank you!

Do you know how to Detonation Sequence? Also, 5link, no quality, no awakened gems, no trigger mod so you prolly don’t have Frost Bomb / Curse on bosses, …

Other than that, I don’t do reviews unless you’re a Patreon Pledge :) The Damage should be plentyfull though!

I don’t know what Average Damage you nowadays would need on Glacial Cascade as that’s not how you caluclate GC’s damage. However, the build had plenty of damage before all Maven Shenanigans which obviously have been impossible for any build to deal with unless you dump 150 Exalts in to top 3 build from what it looks like.

Hey Tbixie, it’s Stark! I hope you remember me, the guy that’s always in a suit.

Your site looks great! I found it from a viewer that was talking about Ghazzy guides on here.

I currently rolled this build in Enki’s HC group found league and I’m having a ton of fun with the GC skill. Made it to Act 4, hopefully no perma-rip soon!

I wanted to ask about end game, what is your opinion on EE with GC mines? Let’s say something like a fast storm brand that circles a boss or lightning spire trap on high life rares / bosses while GC gets to -50 cold res dem bishes. Wondering if it’s a good idea for big tanky bosses or is all the crit and mine dmg enough? (nevar enough damage! :D)

    Hey Stark!

Hope you’ve been good – It’s been a while my man!

Honestly, I’m not quite sure how I feel about this. I think if you play fast there’s probably more of a counter-synergy than a synergy ? GC also hits multiple times if you pre-mine so I don’t think it’s a great DPS increase but IF you end up trying it, I’d be down to hear some feedback ;)

I think your right on with the fast mapping.

Maybe I thought of it because I’m playing super slow in Enki’s HC league right now. I’ll be using it every day until I (hopefully not) RIP if you want to see it live (twitch.tv/stark4machines). I’m noticing the Act bosses and mini-bosses get chunked on the first hit and I use storm brand with culling strike so it constantly.

Stop by some time and let’s talk about it! Would love to see ya again!

Hey Tbixie, this looks like a really fun build

After the patch notes I’m reconsidering whether I want to play traps or mines. How do you think this holds up in 3.15?

I expect mana to be super rough – We’ll have to await and see how viable mana flasks become. If mana sustain is doable, the build will be strong!

Hello, have you tried out The Covenant to get around the mana costs?

I used it in a previous league paired with MoM and it worked great.

Let me know what you think. Thanks

I don’t think the Covenant is a good item, at all. You can use it if you want but I wouldn’t recommend.
