Introduction

Cast on Critical Strike (CoC) builds have long been one of the iconic build archetypes in Path of Exile, offering an engaging and very unique experience that can tear through maps and decimate bosses with little effort. While the Cast On Critical Strike Support Cast On Critical Strike Support gem was gutted in the distant past, it has seen a new lease on life since Patch 3.5: Betrayal, where it has returned triumphantly as one of the most potent and entertaining build archetypes in the meta. This guide has received a considerable overhaul for Patch 3.8 Blight League, returning as a potent powerhouse ready to leave a frozen wake of shattered enemies.

Playstyle

This build is one of incredible power and potential, that feels capable with only a few core investments, but scales into a monstrously powerful end-game that hardly any builds can match. Incredible offensive firepower is distilled into a simple and engaging end point, allowing you to annihilate bosses like The Shaper in seconds.

Survival, however, is often just as important as the raw attack power of your exile, perhaps even more so. Fortunately, this build boasts incredible an incredible array of defenses, just in case anything actually has time to get an attack off against you.

Overally, this build can be one of the most fast-paced, exciting, and well rounded in the entire game. It excels in practically every respect, and has plenty of changes and permutations that can be made to customize it to preference, or upgrade it further towards god status.

Build Assessment

Pros

+ Incredible damage output (~8m Shaper DPS)
+ Solid and well-rounded defenses (78% all Resistances, permanent Blind Support Blind Support, Blasphemy Support Blasphemy Support Enfeeble Enfeeble, reliable Life leech, Physical mitigation, permanent Freeze/Chill, and more).
+ Melts all types of content; Bosses, Mapping, Delving, Labyrinth, etc.
+ Extremely fast clear speed
+ Extremely fast kill times (Uber Elder, Shaper, Aul the Crystal King, Mastermind, etc.)
+ High movement speed
+ Viable as both league starter and league finisher — functions a budget, but has plenty of investments to continually elevate the build

Cons

Moderate cost required to get rolling in the end-game (Cospri's Malice Cospri's Malice)
Cyclone Cyclone requires careful forethought on some bosses as it can lock you into movement

Playstyle

This build clears everything extremely quickly, whether you are farming your T16 Maps or farming the Uber Elder. Players who love smashing through content but have a measured and precise style of play will enjoy this build the most, as it does require and reward careful movement in certain cases.

Cyclone Cyclone is used as the trigger spell for our CoC build, due to its extremely high attack speed and relatively generous range of effect. Cyclone is technically a movement skill, and it can be a polarizing choice for this reason. That said, the sheer power of Cyclone when compared with alternatives, such as Blade Flurry Blade Flurry, make it the clear winner.

Each time you approach an enemy, activate Cyclone Cyclone, ideally clicking close to your character to minimize the distance traveled, affording you more agency to avoid dangerous abilities and ensuring you are not slowed for any longer than necessary. This will trigger our Ice Nova Ice Novas, which are socketed in both our main 6-link (with Cyclone and Cast On Critical Strike Support Cast On Critical Strike Support) as well as Cospri's Malice Cospri's Malice, our weapon of choice. Frostbolt Frostbolts, also socketed in Cospri’s, will trigger additional Ice Novas, resulting in a satisfying helping of freezing and screen shattering that absolutely tears apart the enemies on screen.

This build also incorporates skills like Vaal Righteous Fire Vaal Righteous Fire and Vortex Vortex to increase our damage on sturdy targets and bosses. There are plenty of personal adjustments and customizations to be made, if desired, allowing you to adapt the build to further specialize towards a specific style of play. For example, if you really enjoy the security of playing with a Decoy Totem Decoy Totem on tough bosses, there are multiple “optional” gems that could be swapped out to accommodate personal preference.

Cerebral use of Flasks is relatively important to maintaining maximum damage and clear speed, as we do rely on The Wise Oak The Wise Oak and the Diamond Flask quite heavily to maintain our absurd damage output. While liberal use is advised, be careful not to “munch” charges by re-activating them too early and wasting any remaining duration. Additionally, due to Cyclone Cyclone’s status as a movement skill, certain care must be taken when using flasks that affect movement speed. Using a Quicksilver Flask will cause your character to travel farther and faster, which can be detrimental for uptime on a boss. There is no hard and fast rule; becoming comfortable with the skill and how your character moves is the main optimization and can only be developed with practice and muscle memory.

Skill Tree

This is our recommended skill tree for the build. While there is a lot of flexibility in the gem links and gearing, it is relatively difficult to make adjustments to the tree without making meaningful sacrifices. Doom Cast could be dropped once end-game gear is fully acquired, as the Critical Strike is not as necessary, and a well rolled Jewel is more valuable.

The main goal with the tree is to acquire the necessary damage nodes, while still picking up a fair amount of additional Life and a staggering 8 Jewel sockets. The Jewels can be saved for last, as Frozen Trail Frozen Trail is the only mandatory Jewel, but form a large part of the build’s power spikes in the end-game.

Start by taking the Life notables close to the Shadow starting wheel, as well as Doom Cast, before moving up towards the Witch area. Head through Blast Radius into Power Charge and Cruel Preparation. Continue down to the Templar wheel and start working your way through the Life and damage notables there. Finally, head towards the large Constitution wheel of life. Save Jewel sockets for last, except for the one to the right of the Witch starting wheel, which you need to socket with Frozen Trail Frozen Trail as soon as you have Cospri's Malice Cospri's Malice.

Gems

Ice Nova Ice Nova is the main “damage dealing” skill within the build, and therefore, much of our build is optimized towards increasing its effectiveness and damage. Cyclone Cyclone is used as the “trigger skill”, and will proc all our damage via Cast On Critical Strike Support Cast On Critical Strike Support. Frostbolt Frostbolt creates additional Ice Nova Ice Nova casts, and is socketed in Cospri's Malice Cospri's Malice with another Ice Nova so that it triggers automatically, effectively doubling our damage.

Vortex Vortex is used to increase our Chill effect and apply the effects of Bonechill Support Bonechill Support and Unbound Ailments Support Unbound Ailments Support. Our Critical Strike chance also benefits, via the 60% increased Critical Strike Chance against Chilled Enemies that Cospri's Malice Cospri's Malice affix it has.

Below, the entire setup for gem links is available, with recommendations for optional gems included.

For all the gem links we provide below, keep in mind that we list the gems in order of priority, meaning that if you lack the required number of sockets to fit all the gems, the first ones to drop are the ones at the bottom. Also note that in-game, as long as the sockets are linked, it makes no difference at all what order the gems are placed in.

Cast On Critical Strike Support Cast On Critical Strike Support Ice Nova Ice Nova 6-Link

This is our primary link, and the first one you should aim to fully upgrade with 20% Quality and/or Level 21 gems. The sixth gem is very flexible, and should be adjusted based on the content you are doing. Having a white socket(s) from Vorici’s Syndicate rewards can be very useful in allowing you the greatest degree of flexibility.

  1. Cyclone Cyclone
  2. Cast On Critical Strike Support Cast On Critical Strike Support
  3. Ice Nova Ice Nova
  4. Increased Critical Strikes Support Increased Critical Strikes Support
  5. Hypothermia Support Hypothermia Support
  6. Player’s Preference

Here are a few options for the sixth link, once you acquire it:

  • Fortify Support Fortify Support: The best option for defense and stability. Your damage will be more than enough to deal with T15/T16 bosses, and it feels great against the Syndicate. A good option for players farming to reach Level 100.
  • Increased Area of Effect Support Increased Area of Effect Support: The best option for clear speed on some maps, particularly the more open layouts.
  • Concentrated Effect Support Concentrated Effect Support: Highest possible damage option, at the expense of clear speed. Recommended to swap in for very tanky bosses, such as Uber Elder, Shaper/Guardians, or Aul, the Crystal King.
  • Increased Critical Damage Support Increased Critical Damage Support: A great all-purpose option for damage if you prefer not to gem swap.

Cospri's Malice Cospri's Malice Ice Nova Ice Nova 3-Link

This link triggers automatically, with the Frostbolt Frostbolts providing additional spawns for Ice Nova Ice Nova and Vortex Vortex (read the tooltips of these skills if you are confused). Life Leech Support Life Leech Support is not required, but does add a lot of defensive smoothing that is recommended. Frozen Trail Frozen Trail is used to create additional Frostbolt Frostbolts.

  1. Frostbolt Frostbolt
  2. Ice Nova Ice Nova
  3. Life Leech Support Life Leech Support

An important function of Cospri's Malice Cospri's Malice to take note of is that the socketed gems trigger in order from top to bottom. We want the Frostbolt Frostbolts to spawn and then gain the additional casts of Ice Nova Ice Nova from them, therefore, you will want to ensure that Frostbolt Frostbolt comes before Ice Nova Ice Nova in the link.

Auras 4-Link

This is one of the most important links in the build, and it greatly boosts our general defenses and survivability.

While Act/Map bosses have 60% less Curse effect, and Guardians/Shaper/Elder have 80% less Curse effect, this Enfeeble Enfeeble setup is highly valuable for most other situations and virtually required for Guardian and Elder Maps in order to prevent random deaths.

  1. Vaal Discipline Vaal Discipline (Discipline Discipline active — only with recommended Watcher's Eye Watcher's Eye) OR Flesh and Stone Flesh and Stone
  2. Enfeeble Enfeeble
  3. Blasphemy Support Blasphemy Support
  4. Enlighten Support Enlighten Support (Level 3/4)

Discipline Discipline is the best possible option for this build if you are using a Watcher's Eye Watcher's Eye with the Discipline mod +Energy Shield gained for each Enemy Hit while affected by Discipline. This is optional, but it does add a massive defensive increase to your exile that allows you to play with confidence. The ideal second affix on Watcher’s Eye would be Gain % of Maximum Mana as Extra Maximum Energy Shield while affected by Clarity, however, this will force you to use a Level 1 Clarity Clarity somewhere else in the build.

Vortex Vortex 4-Link

This can also be reduced to a 3-Link if necessary, for example, if you worked in an extra gem such as Decoy Totem Decoy Totem, or you were using a pair of Bubonic Trail Bubonic Trails with 2 Abyssal sockets.

  1. Vortex Vortex
  2. Bonechill Support Bonechill Support
  3. Unbound Ailments Support Unbound Ailments Support (all round) OR Vaal Righteous Fire Vaal Righteous Fire (maximum boss damage — do not activate Righteous Fire Righteous Fire)
  4. Arcane Surge Support Arcane Surge Support (Level 6)

Additional Auras and Cast when Damage Taken Support Cast when Damage Taken Support

Precision Precision can be leveled up or down depending on how much Mana you have unreserved and how much Accuracy you need to stay capped at 100%. Level 4 Enlighten Support Enlighten Support in your main auras link allows you to level Precision Precision up to much higher levels in this link. If you are using Flesh and Stone Flesh and Stone instead of Discipline Discipline you will also be able to level Precision Precision higher. Remember to spec out of as many Accuracy nodes on the tree as you can if you are able to level Precision Precision up.

  1. Herald of Ice Herald of Ice
  2. Precision Precision (Level 5)

The other two skills in this item or link are entirely player’s preference. By default, we recommend Cast when Damage Taken Support Cast when Damage Taken Support (Level 10) and Immortal Call Immortal Call (Level 12), however, these are far from required and can be dropped if you feel stable enough without them. Some example recommendations that can also be great choices:

There are plenty of viable choices depending on playstyle and preference.

Mobility Skill 3-Link

Pick one of Leap Slam Leap Slam, Shield Charge Shield Charge, or Whirling Blades Whirling Blades for mobility, based on preference. Our default recommendation is Leap Slam Leap Slam due to the advantage of being much more versatile in areas with many gaps or walls such as the Labyrinth or Shrine Map Shrine Map, and our penchant for dual-wielding foils in Patch 3.8 Blight League.

  1. Leap Slam Leap Slam
  2. Faster Attacks Support Faster Attacks Support
  3. Fortify Support Fortify Support

Ascendancy, Bandits, and Pantheon

Ascendancy

  1. Unstable Infusion
  2. Deadly Infusion
  3. Opportunistic
  4. Ambush and Assassinate

Assassin is a fantastic choice as an Ascendancy for Cast on Critical builds, as it provides large amounts of Critical Strike chance and Multiplier innately, without forcing us to invest heavily on the Passive Tree. We are left with much more flexible possibilities, allowing you to acquire more rounded defenses and additional Jewel sockets.

Additional Information

Assassin offers a high amount of quality of life and damage, and the natural complement to our build.

  1. Unstable Infusion should be your first acquisition, particularly if you plan on leveling using a CoC setup. The organic Power Charge generation is extremely valuable, and allows you to easily maintain 4-5 charges consistently very early in the game.
  2. Deadly Infusion has perfect synergy with Unstable Infusion, and grants a large amount of additional Critical Strike and Multiplier while you have Power Charges. Since we can expect to have maximum charges at virtually all times, this is essentially a permanent and reliable increase.
  3. Opportunistic feels really great as you are first entering maps, as it provides a huge injection of Movement Speed, which helps us level and clear much faster. The reflect immunity to Critical Strikes is also great quality of life. The increased damage and critical damage immunity while one target is present is also very valuable when you are first dealing with bosses, and continues to pay dividends when engaging end-game bosses such as Aul, the Crystal King. It also makes the Eternal Labyrinth far easier when you attempt it for the first time, which is another reason why it is recommended to take this third.
  4. Ambush and Assassinate is the icing on the cake, providing guaranteed criticals on full life and low life targets, as well as a large amount of damage and multiplier respectably. Culling Strike on criticals is also great quality of life, particularly on certain bosses.

Deal with the Bandits Reward

Help Alira for the Critical Strike Multiplier and Mana Regeneration if you are league starting or in the early end-game . The Elemental Resistances are also quite valuable early on, as well as very late in the game when we start dropping Rare items in favor of more Uniques.

Once you are in the extreme end-game with plenty of currency to afford top-tier Jewels, we recommend swapping to the 2 Passive Points to get an extra Jewel socket.

Pantheon

Major Gods

  • Soul of Lunaris: The default choice for this build. The Movement Speed and Physical damage reduction are both very valuable for us, and the upgrades are all marginally useful.
  • Soul of Solaris: The supreme defensive choice and excellent for bossing.

Minor Gods

  • Soul of Gruthkul: The default choice for this build. Additional Physical reduction and the reduced Attack Speed on enemies are both great for survivability.
  • Soul of Shakari: A great choice to reduce Chaos damage and eliminate Poison damage entirely. Once your defenses have reached a sufficient level that mapping feels very stable, this can be a great alternative choice to bolster your survivability in other areas.
  • Soul of Yugul: An alternative choice for Elder, Aul, or Shaper when upgraded.

Gear Summary / TL;DR

These items strike a balance between power and cost-effectiveness. If you want to explore more options for Gear (both budget and high-end), Flasks, or get more information on alternatives and specialty items, please ensure you read the Gear, Jewels, and Flasks section in its entirety.

Example end game gear:

Gear, Jewels, and Flasks

There are plenty of options for this build, in particular, and you should not feel like you absolutely need every recommended item. Quite notably, there are some very potent Corruptions/Double Corruptions that are not included, as they are simply not realistic acquisitions for most players.

Armor

Chest

A Unique chest is the best option and there are several great possibilities, such as:

  • Loreweave Loreweave is one of our go-to Unique chests and the best choice for bossing and maximizing damage, offering a selection of everything we need. Ensure that the Loreweave you purchase or roll has an 78% Maximum Resistances roll, as this is the most important affix that the item offers. After that, prioritize Global Critical Strike Chance and Elemental Damage. The Attributes and Life rolls are nice bonuses as well, but there is no need to prioritize them.
  • Carcass Jack Carcass Jack is an exceptional choice and arguably the best choice for all-round play. Boasting superior clear to Loreweave Loreweave due to the area bonus, one can even consider using Concentrated Effect Support Concentrated Effect Support in the main link at all times with this chest equipped. If you want the most well-rounded item for an unbeatable price, Carcass Jack Carcass Jack is likely your best bet.
  • Tabula Rasa Tabula Rasa is an option for leveling and early mapping, but should be replaced by Carcass Jack Carcass Jack if you can get a 5-Link version (minimum).

Helmet

Recommended Labyrinth Enchants:

  • Offense: Ice Nova Damage Increased by 40%
  • All-Round: 30% increased Enfeeble Curse Effect

The Enfeeble Enfeeble curse effect is not to be underrated. This can be a serious asset in helping you stay alive, especially if you can not yet afford top-tier gear. Despite what it might appear, the 40% Increase to Ice Nova Ice Nova is not as spectacular as it sounds, and while it is the best choice for bossing and the extreme end-game, you may feel squishy until you attain excellent gear. Enfeeble Enfeeble enchants are also much cheaper and the recommended choice when starting out.

As for helmets, there are a few great Unique options to consider:

  • Starkonja's Head Starkonja's Head is the best overall option, and cheaply obtained at any point in a league. The Dexterity roll is of particular importance, as many of our core gems and items have sizeable requirements. The rest of the stats are great, granting large quantities of Life, Critical Strike, and Evasion.
  • Devoto's Devotion Devoto's Devotion offers superior clear speed and a large injection of Dexterity. The defenses are not as attractive as Starkonja’s, however, and the Attack Speed can actually be a negative in some cases (see Cast on Critical Strike Mechanics Explained later in the guide). That said, this item is unbeatable from a pure clearing speed perspective, making it worthy of consideration if that is your only priority.

A nicely crafted Rare is also a very competitive option. Use Pristine Fossil Pristine Fossil and Frigid Fossil Frigid Fossil to craft an enchanted base yourself, and prioritize stats as follows:

  1. [Uncapped] Elemental Resistances
  2. +# to Maximum Life
  3. Nearby Enemies Have -9% to Cold Resistance (Frigid Fossil Frigid Fossil crafted)
  4. +# to Attribute(s), as needed (Dexterity and Strength, in particular)
  5. % Increased Armour / Evasion / Energy Shield (base dependent)
  6. +# to Armour / Evasion / Energy Shield (base dependent)

Gloves

Rare Fingerless Silk Gloves Fingerless Silk Gloves are the best choice for most of the end-game. Prioritize stats as follows:

  1. [Uncapped] Elemental Resistances
  2. +# to Maximum Life
  3. # to Dexterity (+only if needed for gem requirements)
  4. +# to Accuracy Rating (allows you to respec passive skill points)
  5. % Increased Cold Resistance / % Increased Damage Against Chilled Enemies (Incursion)
  6. % Increased Damage While Leeching (Crafted)
  7. % Increased Elemental Damage if You’ve Dealt a Critical Strike Recently (Crafted) / % Increased Global Critical Strike Chance
  8. % Increased Damage While Leeching (Crafted)
  9. % Increased Damage During Any Flask Effect (Crafted)
  10. % Increased Damage During Soul Gain Prevention (Crafted)

You can make a pretty incredible pair of multi-modded crafted gloves for this build, but it will cost several Exalted Orb Exalted Orbs for all the crafts. You will also need Dexterity on at least one Rare item, and gloves can be a convenient slot to have it.

Atziri's Acuity Atziri's Acuity are the best Unique option, which improve your defenses and sustainability, as well as granting some additional Critical Strike. These are more of a luxury item and are very low priority, and should be one of the last upgrades sought after. We recommend waiting until you can afford a nicely Corrupted pair before purchasing a set of these. Some of the best options include:

  • Curse Enemies with Enfeeble on Hit
  • +1 to Socketed Gems
  • % Increased Maximum Life

Boots

Rare boots are the go-to choice for most. Prioritize affixes as follows:

  1. % Increased Movement Speed (25%+)
  2. [Uncapped] Elemental Resistances
  3. +# to Maximum Life

You will also need Dexterity on at least one Rare item, and boots can be a convenient slot to have it.

Bubonic Trail Bubonic Trail with 2 Abyssal sockets is an exceptionally strong item, and can be considered as very late-game luxury upgrade. You will need to socket at least one Abyssal Jewel into your Passive Tree to get the full bonus (1 of each: Searching Eye, Murderous Eye, and Hypnotic Eye), unless you are using a Stygian Vise in your belt slot. It is not worth using a Ghastly Eye Jewel for the Bubonic Trail damage bonus, as they have few useful damage affixes for non-summoner builds, and we do not use Tombfist Tombfist or Lightpoacher Lightpoacher to provide spare Abyssal sockets.

Weapons and Shields

Weapon 1

Cospri's Malice Cospri's Malice is mandatory and the item that breathes life into the build. In addition to triggering Frostbolt Frostbolts, which in turn generate more casts of Ice Nova Ice Nova, Cospri’s adds a nice amount of Critical Strike chance and flat Cold damage to our attacks.

Do not purchase a Cospri's Malice Cospri's Malice with an Attack Speed roll that is higher than 9% if you are not using the Shaped belt described in the Accessories section. See the FAQ section for more information.

Weapon 2

A multi-modded crafted Apex Rapier Apex Rapier / Thorn Rapier Thorn Rapier / Harpy Rapier Harpy Rapier is the best choice for damage in your off-hand. Make sure you have the Dexterity requirement for the item before crafting it; Harpy Rapier Harpy Rapier, for example, has a very high Dexterity requirement, so one of the lower level bases might be a better choice.

Apex Rapier

To craft your own weapon, you essentially want to roll a Magic version of the item until you hit at least one Tier 1 desirable roll. In this case, we are mostly looking for % Increased Global Critical Strike Multiplier, % Increased Critical Chance for Spells, or Adds # to # Cold Damage to Spells. If you hit a Tier 1 roll and there is another stat on the item that is undesirable, you have to try and remove it using an Orb of Annulment Orb of Annulment.

At this point, when you have a Magic quality item with a single Tier 1 affix, you may wish to make an imprint of your item using beastcrafting, as the next step involves using an Orb of Annulment Orb of Annulment. A Regal Orb Regal Orb is used to make the item Rare, then an Orb of Annulment Orb of Annulment is used to attempt to remove the added affix (unless it is also a Tier 1 desirable affix). If the wrong affix is removed, you will have to start from scratch, or restore your item if an imprint was made.

If the added affix is removed, then all you need to do is head to the crafting bench, or find someone with the recipes to do it for you. Multi-mod the Rare Rapier or Foil and craft your desired stats. We found these to be most effective in our level of gear:

  • Can Have Multiple Crafted Modifiers
  • Adds 23-33 to 50-58 Cold Damage to Spells
  • 46-50% Increased Spell Damage / Gain 4% of Non-Chaos Damage as Extra Chaos Damage
  • Gain 7-8% of Cold Damage as Extra Chaos Damage
  • 50-69% Increased Critical Strike Chance for Spells

You can also purchase weapons for much cheaper than have a handful of useful affixes, and upgrade later on.

Shield Option

Light of Lunaris Light of Lunaris is an option for a shield that provides good damage and allows the use of Shield Charge Shield Charge.

Accessories

The Ring section has been split in two for this guide, as there are certain pairings that only work together. Pick whatever Unique ring you can afford, then examine the “Rare” section for a second option. Do not use two Unique rings or you will struggle to properly cap Resistances.

Amulet

The Pandemonius The Pandemonius should be our go-to choice for amulet. Permanent Blind to enemies we hit, Cold Damage and Penetration, Cold Resistance, and a nice Dexterity implicit make this necklace an incredible pickup.

A Rare amulet can be used until The Pandemonius The Pandemonius can be afforded. Nothing fancy is necessary, as The Pandemonius The Pandemonius is fairly cheap, and will be an early pickup. The following stats should be enough to get you started in maps; any damage, such as Global Critical Strike Chance/Multiplier, is just icing on the cake.

  • Life
  • Resistances
  • Dexterity

Ring #1 (Unique)

Mark of the Shaper Mark of the Shaper is an incredible choice for one of our rings. Your other ring must be an Elder item for this ring to be worth using, as the Spell Damage bonus is quite significant. The Volatile Anomalies that automatically spawn on kill can actually do fairly significant damage in certain situations; namely, bosses that spawn adds. The flat Lightning damage coupled with the Maximum Life and Energy Shield make this ring the complete package, and well worth the investment. Since your other ring has to be an Elder item out of necessity, you should purchase the other ring before upgrading to this piece.

Berek's Grip Berek's Grip can be used in in place of Mark of the Shaper Mark of the Shaper until you can afford it. This item is fantastic for leveling and the Mana leech is useful for sustaining Cyclone Cyclone until you have enough innate regeneration. It also offers superb damage for its very low requirement of Level 20.

Gifts from Above Gifts from Above can be used in place of Mark of the Shaper Mark of the Shaper until you can afford it. It is extremely cheap, can be used from Level 28, and has a handful of effective stats. The Global Critical Strike is very nice to have if you are leveling with Cast on Critical Strike, and the Consecrated Ground actually provides surprisingly potent defensive smoothing.

Ring #2 (Rare)

An Elder Rare ring is the best possible option, as it will enable us to use Mark of the Shaper Mark of the Shaper once it is acquired. If you cannot afford an Elder ring yet, or one with a nice set of rolls, simply use a normal Rare ring with a base of your choosing. Opal is the best base for damage, while Resistance rings can be useful for filling out your defense. Prioritize the stats in the same way:

  1. [Uncapped] Resistances
  2. +# to Maximum Life
  3. Dexterity (if needed)
  4. Global Critical Strike Multiplier (Elder Suffix)
  5. Increased Cold Damage
  6. Life Gained for Each Enemy Hit by your Attacks (Elder Prefix)
  7. Cold Damage Leeched as Life (Fossil Craft)

Belt

Our ideal belt is a Shaped Leather Belt that has the Increased Cooldown Recovery Speed affix. You will need a roll of 14% or higher, where we reach a Cast On Critical Strike Support Cast On Critical Strike Support breakpoint that allows your linked spells to trigger more than an extra time per second, resulting in noticeably higher damage. Additional Increased Cooldown Recovery Speed beyond 14%, however, results in little benefit as another consistent breakpoint cannot be attained. Prioritize the rest of the stats as follows:

  1. +# to Maximum Life
  2. [Uncapped] Resistances
  3. Increased Cold Damage (Delve Mod)
  4. Increased Damage
  5. Energy Shield

The Shaped upgrade can be made relatively late in the build, so do not worry about buying an expensive belt right away. A standard Stygian Vise Stygian Vise Rare with just Life and Resistances will serve you perfectly well for the majority of the end-game, and well past Uber Elder.

Jewels

Ideal Jewels can be very expensive, but are not at all necessary to reach extreme highs with this build. Do not be afraid or ashamed of compromising a little bit, or crafting your own with Life and another damage affix before purchasing upgrades down the road.

Watcher's Eye Watcher's Eye Options

A Watcher's Eye Watcher's Eye with the Discipline mod Energy Shield gained for each Enemy Hit while affected by Discipline mod adds a noticeable defensive increase and is +highly recommended in the late-game. The ideal second affix on Watcher’s Eye would be Gain % of Maximum Mana as Extra Maximum Energy Shield while affected by Clarity, though this is far less important and not worth seeking out unless you have currency to drop.

Unique Jewels

Frozen Trail Frozen Trail is the only mandatory Jewel within the build. It should be placed in the socket just to the right of the Witch starting wheel. The intelligence mentioned in the tooltip does not need to be allocated, just within the radius of the Jewel, so as long as it is socketed in the correct position it will function properly.

Tempered Mind Tempered Mind can be a big help with Accuracy. It should be placed next to the Instability Power Charge node above the Witch wheel if used.

Might of the Meek Might of the Meek can be placed below the Scion starting wheel to add additional Maximum Life from the Constitution wheel.

Unnatural Instinct Unnatural Instinct can be placed above and to the right of the Scion wheel to assist with Accuracy, although this requires some re-allocation of our Passive Skill Tree to drop the existing Accuracy nodes. This will also net you some spell damage and Life, but is a very expensive piece to implement. This is not necessarily an upgrade, either, but some players prefer this pathing.

Normal Jewels

Any damage increasing stats not listed here are also perfectly fine to fill out a Jewel, or for use when starting out.

  1. % Increased Maximum Life
  2. % to Critical Strike Multiplier with Cold Skills
  3. % Increased Critical Strike Multiplier for Elemental Skills
  4. % Increased Critical Strike Multiplier for Spells
  5. % Increased Critical Strike Chance with Cold Skills
  6. +# Increased Global Critical Strike Multiplier
  7. % Increased Cold Damage # % Increased Spell Damage While Holding a Shield (only with Light of Lunaris Light of Lunaris)
  8. % Increased Spell Damage
  9. % Increased Area Damage
  10. % Increased Damage

Abyssal Jewels

  1. +# to Maximum Life
  2. Adds Cold Damage to Spells While Holding a Shield (only with Light of Lunaris Light of Lunaris)
  3. Adds Cold Damage to Spells
  4. % to Global Critical Strike Multiplier
  5. Adds Lightning Damage to Spells While Holding a Shield (only with Light of Lunaris Light of Lunaris)
  6. Adds Fire Damage to Spells While Holding a Shield (only with Light of Lunaris Light of Lunaris)
  7. Adds Lightning/Fire Damage to Spells
  8. Damage Penetrates 2% of Elemental Resistances if you Haven’t Killed Recently
  9. % to Global Critical Strike Chance

Flasks

Here is our recommended Flask setup, although you can change them out based on personal preference of Flasks or Prefixes/Suffixes.

Flasks

Leveling

As a reminder, we have several guides to help you level up a character.

We recommend starting with Freezing Pulse Freezing Pulse, which works well with Lifesprig Lifesprig if you have one. Once you are Level 12, and enter the Cavern of Wrath, pick up Storm Brand Storm Brand and start using it as your main clearing skill.

Use this Level 48 Passive Tree as a general reference if you are leveling with Storm Brand Storm Brand. You will need to respec a few points later, but nothing drastic.

Passive Tree Storm Brand

In order of priority, the Storm Brand links are:

  1. Storm Brand Storm Brand
  2. Elemental Focus Support Elemental Focus Support
  3. Added Lightning Damage Support Added Lightning Damage Support
  4. Controlled Destruction Support Controlled Destruction Support
  5. Added Cold Damage Support Added Cold Damage Support
  6. Hypothermia Support Hypothermia Support

If you are using a Tabula Rasa Tabula Rasa, simply fill in the other gem sockets with whatever supports are available from the vendors until you reach Act II and Act III for the other gems.

Link Brand Recall Brand Recall to Arcane Surge Support Arcane Surge Support (Level 3) and Flame Dash Flame Dash. This is a great leveling link and should be acquired as soon as possible.

At Level 12 you can also acquire Blade Vortex Blade Vortex. Link it to Added Cold Damage Support Added Cold Damage Support, Added Lightning Damage Support Added Lightning Damage Support, and Controlled Destruction Support Controlled Destruction Support as soon as possible.

Herald of Ice Herald of Ice, Herald of Thunder Herald of Thunder, and Clarity Clarity should be used as early as possible.

Once you reach Act III and can acquire Lightning Spire Trap Lightning Spire Trap, set up the following 4-link, replacing your Blade Vortex Blade Vortex link:

  1. Lightning Spire Trap Lightning Spire Trap
  2. Added Lightning Damage Support Added Lightning Damage Support
  3. Controlled Destruction Support Controlled Destruction Support
  4. Trap and Mine Damage Support Trap and Mine Damage Support

You can play Storm Brand Storm Brand into early mapping if you like, which may be easier for league starter characters until Cospri's Malice Cospri's Malice can be acquired. Take a look at our full Storm Brand guide for tree reference if you plan on respeccing later.

You can transition to Cast On Critical Strike Support Cast On Critical Strike Support as early as level 44, when Widowmaker Widowmaker can be acquired. Ideally, you will also want to have a Diamond Flask, which is really essential before you get your second Ascendancy node, Deadly Infusion. Refer to the links and Passive Tree earlier in the guide for more details. Instead of Herald of Thunder Herald of Thunder, use a Warlord's Mark Warlord's Mark with Blasphemy Support Blasphemy Support instead to provide you with a source of life leech while leveling.

FAQ

Cast on Critical Strike Mechanics Explained

Cast On Critical Strike Support Cast On Critical Strike Support can only trigger a maximum number of times per second, which is just over 6 times per second, due to an internal cooldown. Cyclone Cyclone hits twice with every hit, and therefore we want to have a “Attacks Per Second” (APS) of 3.0, which would result in 6 total attacks per second. Since this is just under the maximum trigger rate of Cast on Critical Strike, this gives us the best chance of attaining the maximum possible triggers since there is almost no overlap.

This means that using a Silver Flask will actually reduce your damage output, since your Cyclone Cyclone hits will no longer cleanly line up with the Cast On Critical Strike Support Cast On Critical Strike Support internal cooldowns, which will result in slight delays between some triggers and a sizeable amount of lost damage potential. You will essentially be wasting every 7-8th “attack” from Cyclone, as Cast on Critical Strike would be on cooldown for that period. In order to not exceed this limitation, you should not purchase a Cospri's Malice Cospri's Malice with an Attack Speed value that exceeds 9%, and avoid Attack Speed on Rares.

There is a way around this, however, and it is explained in our Belt section. A Shaped Rare belt with Increased Cooldown Recovery Speed (ICRS) of at least 14% will increase the maximum number of Cast On Critical Strike Support Cast On Critical Strike Support triggers to ~7.60 per second. This means our optimal APS value would become around 3.75, giving us 7.50 attacks per second, once again just beneath the maximum trigger rate for the smoothest triggers.

If you have 14% ICRS, you can upgrade your Cospri's Malice Cospri's Malice to a maximum Attack Speed roll (14%). You can also swap your Basalt Flask for a Silver Flask for a sizeable damage boost, but at a loss to defensive capability.

How Do I Calculate DPS?

Check this comment for more information on how to calculate your own DPS. When inputting your Ice Nova Ice Nova and Frostbolt Frostbolt damage you must put in the damage it does when it Critically Strikes (taking the multiplier into account) because we nearly always deal Critical Strikes. We then multiply by a decimal of our Critical Strike (e.g. 0.95) to account for the percentage of times that we do not crit.

This is an extremely complicated build with many layered interactions between damage, ailments, and triggers — unfortunately, there is no way in Path of Building to automate this calculation. Good luck!

What About Lycosidae Lycosidae?

Lycosidae Lycosidae is still a perfectly viable choice and can be used all throughout the end-game if you prefer not to mess around with Accuracy.

Cospri’s Malice Explained

Gems trigger from top to bottom in Cospri's Malice Cospri's Malice, as explained earlier in the guide. This item will trigger automatically from our Cyclone Cyclone, so there is no need to do anything beyond socketing the gems. The gems socketed in Cospri's Malice Cospri's Malice alternate between triggers, therefore the Ice Nova Ice Nova socketed in Cospri’s will trigger half as many times as your main 6-Link.

I have been following this build and I’m still a little bit off from some of the more expensive items, however I do seem to run out of mana a lot. Any tips / something obvious that I’m missing?

If you’re holding down Cyclone Cyclone, it can be a heavy tax on Mana — any time your “end point” or direction changes it will cost additional Mana. Try moving a “longer” distance when clearing through packs to help save on Mana. With bosses you generally want to make single clicks in a triangle or square pattern around the target. The more you practice with the skill, the easier it is to get a handle on. If you are really struggling you can also pick up some Mana Leech on the tree or from an item.

Champ, thank you. Was the old hold it down vs single clicking.

No worries, its an easy mistake to make if you haven’t played a lot of Cyclone Cyclone before (or at least without Blood Magic).

You mention the watchers eye with the modifiers ‘while affected by Discipline / Clarity’ comes in handy. Is this intended for group play or am I missing an item that provides Discipline / Clarity

It’s discussed in the Gems section, specifically “Auras 4-Link” where I cover the recommended auras.

Fantastic guide/build ive gotten all the items apart from a shaper ring setup, so im using the bereks grip, and also missing the pandemonius amulet.

Im clearing maps T15 insanely fast but on single target bosses my damage is really bad? I went for the fortify on the 6L. apart from that do you have any other advice on what I could do to potentially kill bosses more effectively?

Ah yes, the old it’s there if you read it all. Apologies, loving the guide.

Concentrated Effect Support Concentrated Effect Support will rip bosses to pieces, but The Pandemonius The Pandemonius will also be a noticeable increase due to the huge chunk of penetration, which is especially potent for bosses due to their naturally high Resistances.

Even with Fortify Support Fortify Support, however, your damage should be plenty with the appropriate items. If you have a POB Link for your character I can take a quick look, but just make sure you’re doing all the basic stuff properly (flask uptimes, not running out of Mana with Cyclone Cyclone, etc.) as well, as this build does rely on solid fundamentals a lot!

Pandemonius is like 20exalts on console at the moment > <

im going to go for the shaper ring and elder ring setup, Just want to add ive just cleared the shaper guardians after getting some gem slots in my skills tree as im only level 83ish.

most likely not going to get to complete the build with the expense on console but its been hella fun spinning through content reminds me of the good old CoC discharge builds :D

Oh my, that’s quite the expense! I only play on PC, where it’s a relatively attainable mid-build upgrade — sorry to hear it’s so far out of reach. The Mark of the Shaper Mark of the Shaper is a nice injection of damage, and you’ll definitely feel an immediate power-up.

First of thanks for a really fun build I really enjoy clearing whole screens with it.

I swithced my dual strike claw assasin to this yesterday. I had just short of a million DPS on that char and had hit a wall in the delve. Switching defenitly amped up my dps and clearing time. So I can confirm that my dps is way over a million.

With my prior build I was able to see my dps on my dual strike skill. But since this build is make use of chained skills and prox I find it quite difficult to track dps. This makes optimizing quite hard. Any tip for how I can keep track of my dps during optimization?

I am currently trying to find, craft new Jewels but I can’t say if I should go for more cold damage, more crit mult/chance and since the jewels cost a few ex each I would like to keep track of the best payout.

It’s quite difficult and annoying to calculate and you mostly have to do it all longhand. For example:

Ice Nova Damage x Number of Frostbolts x Hits per Second x Critical Strike Chance

You also have to account for Shock, Cospri’s, Cyclone, Culling Strike, and so on.

In most cases your combined damage per second (Ice Nova, Frostbolt procs, etc.) is about half or two thirds of your actual DPS when accounting for ailments/items/effects.

With the gear recommended in the guide (not counting any crazy mirror worthy items or things worth tens of exalts) you should be sitting between 5-9 million DPS without Vaal Righteous Fire active.

Is this build going to be updated for 3.7 with the changes to Cyclone? Also, is Loreweave still the best option, even with 78% maximum resistances being the best roll?

Yes, it will be updated — I’ll be investigating whether Cyclone Cyclone is still an ideal trigger skill. For 3.6 Loreweave Loreweave was still the best overall option since it also provides exceptional damage for a chest, but it will take me a day or two to get a solid draft of our 3.7 version prepared, so stay tuned!
