Lacerate Gladiator Build Guide (PoE Expedition 3.15)

Introduction

Lacerate Lacerate is a skill that often flies under the radar in the Path of Exile community. Despite Cyclone Cyclone garnering a lot of the attention, Lacerate Lacerate can reach similar heights on significantly less gear, and with a unique style and flair that few other melee skills have. This is partially because Lacerate Lacerate is not really a true melee skill — in the end game, you will be able to obliterate packs nearly a full screen away, reminiscent of the Vaal Reave Vaal Reave builds of old. Not only does it boast great damage through a combination of upfront hits and bleeds, but it also has strong across the board defenses that make it stable in any environment.

In Ultimatum 3.14 Lacerate Lacerate remains a great league starter and one of the best melee skills for solo self-found due to its lack of reliance on critical strike or build-making uniques.

Lacerate Delve

Blood and Sand Blood and Sand and Flesh and Stone Flesh and Stone transform the skill, giving it two separate sides to the same coin. While in Sand stance, Lacerate has an increased area of effect and angle of attack, but deals slightly less area damage. While in Blood stance, however, nearby enemies are maimed, attacks have a greater chance of inflicting Bleeding, and Bleeding deals more damage, you deal more area damage, but have a narrower angle of attack and less area of effect. This dichotomy gives you the flexibility to clear without comprising your boss damage in any way.

Lacerate Lacerate scales into a proper end-game giant that can deal with virtually any boss and clear with ease. The bleeds the build takes advantage of gives the skill a fresh element that few builds incorporate and allow it to scale without relying on conventional damage stats like Critical Strike. Our Lacerate Lacerate Gladiator is fast and powerful and feels totally fresh.

Build Assessment

Pros

+ Excellent clear speed and movement speed

+ Ideal league starter as it requires no bottleneck Uniques

+ Flexible build path and skill choices

+ Long range melee skill grants more options in how you engage enemies and bosses

+ Well rounded late game

Cons

Melee build; despite its ranged advantage it still requires proper positioning on end-game content and bosses

Does not scale indefinitely due to Resolute Technique; even with the best gear damage is unlikely to exceed ~5m DPS

Path of Building

Path of Building data for this build can be found here.

Included in the Path of Building are skill trees, all gem links and possible variations, and an example set of gear with room for upgrades. For simplicity’s sake, Elemental Resistances are not included on gear, and you can fill them in as you like depending on available gear.

We use the Path of Building Community Fork for all of our builds, which is highly recommended. If you are encountering errors importing the build, please ensure you are using the Community Fork.

Playstyle and Build Mechanics

While Lacerate Lacerate itself is a fairly straightforward skill, this build has a few moving parts that keep it feeling energetic, such as the Blood and Sand Blood and Sand aura. Using Leap Slam Leap Slam we can move through the map quickly, using Lacerate Lacerate to quickly rip packs apart.

The Gladiator Ascendancy keystones play perfectly into the strengths of this build; Arena Challenger grants the unique Challenger Chargers, which increase Movement and Attack Speed by 20%, further empowering our clear. Gratuitous Violence causes enemies that are Bleeding to explode and deal 10% of their Maximum Life as Physical damage, functioning as a sort of Inpulsa's Broken Heart Inpulsa's Broken Heart for free. We generate all types of charges and apply Maim Support Maim Support for free. Overall, there is no better choice for this build than Gladiator.

In Sand stance, our Lacerate Lacerate has a greatly increased angle of attack and effective area, which makes clearing feel super smooth and relaxed. In Blood stance, however, the cone of attack is more focused and empowers our damage and bleeds, allowing us to melt down bosses and enemies without much trouble.

Leveling

As a reminder, we have several guides to help you level up a character.

Start out with Ground Slam Ground Slam, which you should use until Level 12, when Lacerate Lacerate can be acquired. Lacerate is a fairly strong leveling skill, and is a perfectly fine choice to use all throughout the leveling process and into Maps. Your links for leveling should be:

  1. Lacerate Lacerate
  2. Melee Physical Damage Support Melee Physical Damage Support
  3. Multistrike Support Multistrike Support
  4. Pulverise Support Pulverise Support
  5. Brutality Support Brutality Support
  6. Onslaught Support Onslaught Support

Work in Fortify Support Fortify Support in place of Onslaught Support Onslaught Support once you reach the second half of the game and have acquired a Silver Flask Silver Flask. Early on, linking Lacerate Lacerate to whatever gems are available is fine until you reach the latter acts when Brutality Support Brutality Support and Multistrike Support Multistrike Support become available. Be sure to grab Blood and Sand Blood and Sand immediately at the start of the game, Flesh and Stone Flesh and Stone in Act II, and Pride Pride at the start of Act III.

We recommend leveling as Dual Wield with a little more emphasis on the early Axe nodes, which you can respec out of later on in favor of more bleed damage, defense, and utility.

Playing it since 3.8 and absolutely loving it, thanks for your investment.

I was wondering if impale is not better now that the league is focused on Single Target more than Clearing.
Maybe Champion + Impale scaling instead of Bleeding ?

Sorry for my english, it’s not my native languagen GL in this awsome league !

Hi, I started today playing PoE, I saw on build that I should get ground slam until level 12, I’m having difficulty about finding the items or how to buy them for the beginning of my journey on this build, can someone give me a little information about starting here?

Here’s some information that might help you, or maybe anyone else viewing this, as it is usually glossed over or never mentioned by other players.

1 – Several currencies can be sold to vendors (called vendoring) for many wisdom scrolls. Alteration Orbs, Transmutation Orbs, and Blacksmith’s Whetstones each vendor for 4 wisdom scrolls each. Armourer’s Scraps can be sold for 2 wisdom scrolls.

2 – Pick up everything while leveling. Seriously, vendoring unidentified rare gear gives 5 transmutation shards (1 wisdom scroll) and unidentified magic gear gives 2 transmutation shards. If you have plenty of wisdom scrolls, start identifying them and selling them. Identifying gear while leveling is essential to a smooth leveling experience.

3 – Make sure you check the armor vendor every 3-5 levels to see if there’s a new, higher-level weapon base you can purchase. This is the most crucial part of leveling up a melee build without uniques. Additionally, make sure you’re identifying any rare weapons that fit your build.

4 – Look up “PoE Vendor recipes” and look at all the things you can do. I’ll provide some very useful ones if you, or anyone else viewing, are too lazy to look them up.
4.1 – White boots + any Quicksilver Flask + 1 orb of augmentation = magic boots with 10% movement speed.
4.2 – Magic/rare boots with +X% movemenet speed + any quicksilver flask + 1 orb of augmentation = Magic boots with X+5% movement speed (increasing the speed increases the level requirement)
4.3 – 1 of any weapon + 1 magic/rare rustic sash + 1 blacksmith’s whetstone = (magic sash) A weapon with 40-49% increased physical damage (local) or (rare sash) A weapon with 50-69% increased physical damage (local). (Tip: You can quality the weapon beforehand to save some whetstones)

5 – Get a lootfilter to save you eyestrain and a headache trying to filter all the junk that drops while leveling. You can go to filterblade.xyz and download their pre-built lootfilter which will suite most players’ needs.

opinions on using impale support instead of pulverise?

Less clear, more boss damage. Check your tree or weapon crafts to make sure you aren’t overcapping Chance to Impale if you are doing this.

Hi, I’m pretty sure I’ll do this build as starter for 3.9

I wonder what gems I should level in secondary weapons, what gem benefits most from being level 21 ?
Someone told me melee/attack gems don’t scale as much as spells and minion gems in terms of getting that extra level from 20 to 21

Anyways, the guide is very well written :)

EDIT: I’m wondering if it’s okay to swap ancestral warchief with Vaal Doublesrike (for singletarget ultimate) I don’t like totems at all :P Vaal doublestrike is wicked awesome though

    Thanks in advance

Warchief is fine and generally better for clear.

Hey there. Started playing this very recently. Having alle 3 aura active, however, I have only 32 mana available with no regen apart from base. Mana flasks are rendered borderline useless by the tiny mana max after reservations. You mentioned mana leech on amulets in the guide but during leveling, how would/did you go about that?

    Thanks in advance :)</div>

I too am wondering this, for the most part i’m doing ok with most maps so far (act 3) but seems like in the very near future my mana will not outlast my opponents. Seems like running 2 would be a better option however then it seems to take a big hit to damage.

Don’t run all three auras until the end-game when you can sustain them. Blood and Sand Blood and Sand and Pride Pride should suffice while leveling.

Definitely a viable choice, and you could easily just take the gear and setup of this guide and port it to Champion. I probably won’t be making a new build guide for it but there wouldn’t be many changes other than the Ascendancy path. Overall it would be a worse league starter but better in the end-game when you have full gear and weapons.

Hi Furty! Loving your guides. Thanks for another great one!

Just a couple of questions if you don’t mind. When I look at the poeninja lacerate builds, almost everyone seems to be playing it as Berserker and using one handed swords. Why did you pick Gladiator and axes? What are the pros?

    Thanks

Hi I’m sort of new to the game and hit a plateau. I do good damage but my hp is only 5.3k. What should it be around lvl 85

This is amazing. I’ve played POE in the past, but never really got through the story acts because I was trying to figure out a build and it generally didn’t work. Bossing was always hard, I’d die frequently. I’m cruising with this one. I’m at the second half of the story now and eager to do some mapping with the character. Thanks a lot.

Hey, thanks for the build! How do you get that much int to be able to use level 13 Enfeeble?

Will this still be viable in 3.10? I don’t have enough experience to make my own build or tweak this one, but it seems the new Bramble Shard and Brood Shard large cluster jewels will work pretty well with this build.

Took out 2 passives (10+ int and str) above the Crimson Dance and used 1 passive point (10+ str) above Revelry to connect the whole tree…so you get 1 passive extra to spend…just my two cents, great build btw :)

First of all, thank you so much for your guides! I just started playing a month ago and used your utimate spectre guide for my first char, and it was so much fun.

For the new league, I want to try a melee char. I looked at all your guides and I’ve narrowed it down to either Lacerate Gladiator or Cyclone Gladiator. (Cyclone Slayer seems a little to complicated for me haha). Anyways, the two builds look so similar, so I was wondering how you would compare them?

For example, what build would you say is more tanky? More end-game viable? Higher DPS? Clear speed? Better for league starter? etc. . .

Your thoughts would be greatly appreciated!

Great build. It’s similar to one I am putting together, so I’m using it for guidance and ideas since I’m new to this.

I’m confused why you took Resolute Technique. A dual wielding gladiator has high accuracy, so they’ll be hitting almost all the time. It seems like you are giving up critical strikes for very little benefit. What am I missing?
