Passive Skill Tree
You can find an optimized Path of Building here. Every build I release will use the community fork of Path of Building, which is maintained and updated in a much more regular fashion than the original one. You can find PoB’s Fork, by LocalIdentity, here.
If you are not comfortable with Path of Building, we also have a PoePlanner for you. Do note that PoE Planner does not support Cluster Jewels and some specific unique jewels and it is highly recommended you install Path of Building to follow builds most optimally.
Since this build works as soon as you swap to it at level 12 (through other brands), you’ll be completely fine regardless, but I’ll leave you with this Path of Building to give you an idea as to what I would suggest your tree looks like at the beginning of maps.
If you’re not comfortable with Path of Building, here’s a PoePlanner to give you an idea of how your tree should look like whenever you’re at about that level.
Penance Brand – Main Link (6-Link)
Penance Brand’s base damage scales fairly hard with gem levels! Try to pick up a 21/20 as soon as possible. Since your Awakened Gems are mainly ailment-based, they’re really potent and generally fairly cheap! Keep that in mind when thinking about purchasing them.
- Penance Brand (ideally level 21)
- Ignite Proliferation Support
- Awakened Deadly Ailments Support
- Awakened Unbound Ailments Support
- Awakened Burning Damage Support
- Awakened Swift Affliction Support
Note: Dropping (Awekened) Unbound Ailments Support for Swiftbrand Support is a BIG Quality of Life change. However, this decreases your single target damage by A LOT, therefore you would need to gemswap on a boss (most likely, on map bosses you’ll be fine, but on Conqueror’s you’ll need to swap).
Since your Golems are now automatically re-summoned as an Elementalist, you can socket 4 of them together in any 4-socketed item! You’re running one of each of those while running 3 Chaos Golems (after you’ve raised your maximum amount of Golems with The Primordial Chain just to make sure you always have one up for the Physical Mitigation.
The build runs 3 Auras, which are Malevolence for increased Damage over Time & Skill Effect Duration, Herald of Purity for More Physical Damage, and a low level Clarity to make up for the Mana cost of Penance a little bit. In the Free Socket here, you can socket your 5th Golem.
One of the main components of the build is Enduring Cry. Put this on your Left Mouse Button so it automatically gets used whenever it’s off cooldown, as that will not interfere with your gameplay whatsoever (since Call to Arms makes it instant)!
For the mobility spell of choice, we chose Flame Dash. Link it to a low level Arcane Surge & a Second Wind for maximum uptime!
This is where you have a choice but for the most optimal damage I’ll assume you’re not going to opt in to using a Trigger Wand. If you do want to automate as much as possible, there’s a section explaining what to do. Now, because you’re free to put these buffs – Elemental Weakness and Wave of Conviction – anywhere, you can use a 4-Link which simplifies the setup a bit.
First and foremost it’s important to understand what you want to achieve with the Wave of Conviction. The skill applies exposure for the element with which it hits the hardest. Because you’re scaling Physical, Fire and Lightning damage you might find yourself in a situation where the gem deals too much Lightning damage, thus exposing the enemies to Lightning instead of the Fire we envisioned it to proc. There’s a lot of ways to deal with this. You could either unspec / remove some of your sources of % increased Lightning Damage, run an extra support gem such as Added Fire Damage Support or even Combustion Support. Combustion is the more potent pick here but Added Fire Damage is easier to guarantee Fire Damage being the highest damage dealt. If you want to use the Combustion Support for maximal output, I recommend getting a Phantasmal Wave of Conviction because that further helps you converting some damage away from Lightning.
If you’re using this setup in a 4-Link you can link a Hextouch Support to the Wave of Conviction & Elemental Weakness to automate the appliance of the curse. If you can’t free up the extra socket, you’re going to have to cast your curse manually.
Lastly, it is imperative to understand how all of these exposure mechanics interact with Elemental Equilibrium which you are picking up in the Passive Tree. Your brands are going to take a certain amount of time to explode. If you’re mapping and using a Swiftbrand Support they’ll explode so fast that using Wave of Conviction is almost a DPS decrease. Now, on bosses, where you have time before your brands explode, you’re going to want to make sure that you apply the Wave of Conviction before they explode. This is because when you cast Wave of Conviction, the monster will be exposed (-25 Resistance) to Fire Damage but since you’re running Elemental Equilibrium in the tree you’re also going to add Fire Resistance to the monster because you just hit it with Fire Damage. This doesn’t matter because the exposure will stay (sort of a snapshot) but the Fire Resistance granted by Elemental Equilibrium will be removed when your brands explode, which only deal Lightning Damage. Therefore, it effectively further reduces the enemy’s Fire Resistance and grants them Lightning Resistance instead. The Lightning Damage from the brands will then inflict an ignite which deals Fire Damage and thus doesn’t get affected by the augmentation of Lightning Resistance.
- Wave of Conviction
- Elemental Weakness
- Added Fire Damage Support OR Combustion Support
- Optional: Hextouch Support
Since some people really enjoy automating as much of their build as possible, there is a world in which you don’t want to cast Wave of Conviction yourself. This will sometimes be a little bit awkward because it might proc when you don’t want it to. However, if you’re fighting bosses, which is when it effectively matters, you have to make sure your Trigger from the wand casts a Wave of Conviction before your brands explode (as explained in the last paragraph).
The upside of course is that when you guarantee (through Gear / Alternate Qualities) Fire Exposure and you’re running a Trigger Wand, you’re obviously going to get much higher uptime on your Exposures, Curses, Elemental Equilibriums while mapping. I personally don’t feel like that extra source of damage is necessary while clearing maps and casting a Wave of Conviction (and even a Curse) manually on bosses isn’t really much of a problem, especially when it comes to passive builds like Totems, Brands and so on.
