Ultimate Cyclone Slayer Build Guide - Slay the Stars (PoE Ultimatum 3.14)

Introduction

Cyclone Cyclone is a perennial powerhouse that immediately asserted itself as one of the staple skills in the melee metascape on its inception. Slayer also received a few redesigned keystones, and is now one of the perfect pairings for crit-based melee builds. Despite a few tweaks in recent patches Cyclone Cyclone remains — not only viable — one of the most potent melee end-game builds available. The result of many leagues of careful build chemistry is a Cyclone Cyclone build of monstrous proportions. With the ability to melt any content in a matter of moments, our Crit-Based Cyclone Slayer is doubtless one of the strongest overall melee builds to ever grace Path of Exile.

Uber Awakener

No content is out of reach for this build. With 9000 or more effective Life, increased maximum Resistances, tons of Armour, and more, this build is not lacking in defense. It is always a great time to play Cyclone Cyclone, and this is the most overpowered way to do it. Our Crit-Based Cyclone Slayer is a truly unstoppable force that is the perfect candidate to fulfill any task.

Since Patch 3.11 Harvest League, Cyclone Cyclone no longer grants stun immunity and Starforge Starforge was heavily nerfed. This prompts us to changed our Ascendancy path and switch over to Atziri's Disfavour Atziri's Disfavour as our early game weapon, later transitioning to a Rare Exquisite Blade Exquisite Blade for maximum damage when our bank has been built up. In 3.14 Ultimatum League the build has no significant changes in power or pathing.

Build Assessment

Pros

+ Absurd damage potential — can basically scale indefinitely with enough currency

+ Excellent clear speed — one of the S-Tier melee builds

+ Solid all-round defenses — excellent Level 100 candidate

+ Melts bosses in the blink of an eye

+ Crit-based build with incredible scaling (~88% Crit Chance in top-end gear)

+ All map mods are possible (except no regeneration), immune to reflect

+ Strongest way to play Cyclone Cyclone in the end-game

Cons

Not a good Cyclone Cyclone build for beginners — knowledge of how to upgrade a character and quickly generate currency is very helpful

Expensive to achieve top-end gear, depending on the popularity and availability of items

Cyclone Cyclone can be a polarizing skill — careful movement is necessary for dangerous enemies

Path of Building and Furty’s Character

Make sure you are using the Path of Building Community Fork to include Impale DPS in the calculations.

You can find the Ultimate Cyclone Slayer’s Path of Building information here.

We use the Path of Building Community Fork for all of our builds, which is highly recommended. If you are encountering errors importing the build, please ensure you are using the Community Fork.

You can also find a link to Furty’s personal character for this build — last played in the 3.10 Delirium challenge league — by clicking here.

Playstyle and Build Mechanics

Cyclone Cyclone is a very simple and straightforward skill. Now a channeled ability, your character spins around and attacks extremely quickly — technically it is considered a movement skill, although it slows your character. By stacking a lot of damage, Critical Strike Chance and Multiplier, Attack Speed, Impale, and Movement Speed, our Cyclone Slayer glides effortlessly through maps while shredding packs and bosses alike.

This is an exclusively Physical damage build, which makes it relatively easy to itemize for early on. As you start to become more ambitious with armour acquisitions, gear can become a little more difficult and/or expensive to obtain — after all, crit items are highly sought after for many builds. Fortunately, many of the items can be crafted yourself, and for only a few Exalted Orb Exalted Orbs you outfit yourself with extremely strong items.

Simply enter a map, Leap Slam Leap Slam into a pack, and Cyclone Cyclone through it to blow it to pieces.

Leveling

As a reminder, we have several guides to help you level up a character.

Start out with Ground Slam Ground Slam, which you should use until Level 12, when Sunder Sunder can be acquired. Sunder is a fairly potent leveling skill due to its high base damage and ease of use. Your Sunder links, in order of priority, are:

  1. Sunder Sunder
  2. Melee Physical Damage Support Melee Physical Damage Support
  3. Onslaught Support Onslaught Support
  4. Multistrike Support Multistrike Support
  5. Maim Support Maim Support
  6. Ruthless Support Ruthless Support

Just use what you can get until the gems become available — Maim Support Maim Support and Ruthless Support Ruthless Support are available very early, along with Onslaught Support Onslaught Support, but you will have to wait until Act II for Melee Physical Damage Support Melee Physical Damage Support. Added Fire Damage Support Added Fire Damage Support is an option in the meantime, if you are using a Tabula Rasa Tabula Rasa.

Blood and Sand Blood and Sand is available right at Level 4, and should be picked up immediately. Acquire Herald of Ash Herald of Ash and Herald of Purity Herald of Purity in Act II to help you level up. You can get Pride Pride in Act III after doing Lost in Love and drop Herald of Purity Herald of Purity.

Cyclone Cyclone can honestly be used as soon as you can sustain it (e.g. using a ring such as Thief's Torment Thief's Torment, but we recommend waiting until the latter part of the leveling process, or even after finishing Kitava. If you are league starting, you will probably want to do a little mapping before making the full switch, as Cyclone Cyclone is a relatively weak skill until it gets a bit of scaling behind it.

FAQ

Which Anointments are Best for my Amulet?

As with all anointment advice, you can make a variety of different choices depending on how you want to tailor your build. Consider these recommendations:

  • Fatal Blade — Our default recommendation for pure damage performance if using Swords.
  • Vitality Void — Expensive, but a great option for increasing leech to the maximum. Recommended if you forget to keep Blood Rage Blood Rage active on bosses sometimes.
  • Discipline and Training — Big boost to survivability and maximum life.

Why Do You Take Point Blank on the Tree?

Should only be used with Soul Tether Soul Tether and Glorious Vanity Glorious Vanity in niche setups.

I’m Having Mana Issues

Make sure you have the crafted affix -# to Total Mana Cost of Skills on both your rings. If you do not have those affixes, you will need to disable one of your auras and acquire % of Physical Attack Damage Leeched as Mana on one of your gear pieces (recommended: Gloves).

I Can’t Afford Atziri's Acuity Atziri's Acuity. Should I take Vaal Pact on the Tree?

This is a complicated question, because it largely depends on you, your gear, what league you are playing on, and your priorities as a player.

If you already have Glorious Vanity Glorious Vanity and have specced into Corrupted Soul, we recommend pathing to Vaal pact (3 point investment). If you have not yet done this, the answer is a lot murkier, as it is a 5 point investment from Golem’s Blood, and you will have to decide for yourself.

    Hi !

Im’ not sure my answer will be accurate, but from what I’ve understood from the build (still mostly on a PoB phase for me…), life leech comes from Blood Rage, are you using it ?
Now if I’m not mistaken, you will leech life until you’re full HP, and then with Soul Tether all the leeching will replenish your ES (that will start at 0 anyway and 5% will drop every second, also “thanks” to Soul Tether).

I would also have some questions as well :
    - I don’t really understand how you can get about 9k HP : with all the HP nodes on tree, Kaom’s Heart, ~80 HP on amulet/rings, 100+ HP on boots and 2 jewels with 7% increased max life and a Watcher’s Eye with 6% I barely reach 6.2k HP at lvl 92. If anyone doing the build having 8k+ HP could share his stuff that would be very kind.
    - It’s the same for crit chance, I’m curious to see if anyone got close to 80% crit chance, I only get close to 70% with a diamond flask.

Yeah Im using blood rage, but i see no life leech at all happening. all correct gear etc

    Here’s my char list…

Really frustrating atm as now super squishy lol

I think the blood rage is not triggering with cwdt….. cant work out why tho

Hot guess: Your bloodrage doesn’t get triggered because too high for cwdt^^

That was a good guess Losumas ^^

CWDT lvl 2 can support up to Blood Rage lvl 8 (and yours is lvl 18), so I guess it has to be changed in the build. Btw on your character your CWDT is lvl 4, and build recommends lvl 2 (for it to proc almost all the time I guess).

Note that CWDT doesn’t trigger War Banner so you can lvl War Banner up to 20.

Yeah I was working on that principle hence why build shows CWDT at 4, ty for response though as it confirms my suspicion. Setting CWDT at 5 to see effect as a trial

I was wondering about cwdt . All my gems are at 20. Didn’t notice cwdt was supposed to be lev 2 and molten level 11. But wouldn’t blood rage at 20 not work?

Just read a few posts above ^^

Indeed, Blood Rage won’t work at lvl 20, with a lvl 2 CWDT, Blood Rage’s maximum lvl is 8.

There’s however something that I don’t understand. If Blood Rage is our only mean to regen life/ES, then we need it to be active all the time.
Blood Rages refreshes when you kill an enemy, so during mapping it should be up all the time. However during a boss fight, when there’s no other mob to kill, we have to be sure that Blood Rage stays up all the fight (it lasts for about 8s). So, yes, by taking dmg CWDT should proc it, but I wonder if it wouldn’t be safer to be able to trigger it manually and not depend on CWDT.

Maybe replace it by Pride in this CWDT 4l, and put Blood Rage in the Auras 4l would be a bit safer, as we don’t care in which link Pride is (Maim only supports Flesh and Stone if I’m not mistaken).

Also as I said before, if anyone having 8k+ HP could share his stuff that would be nice, I really don’t see how you can get this much life from Amulet/Rings/Boots/3 Jewels only…
Edit : even with Kaom’s Heart ofc.

Waiting for the update as well !

can i ask you one more question?

i’m thinking about not using kaom’s heart and use rare elder base astral plate(-15 mana cost, maim support)
and link cyclone there for more aura and 6 sockets
i use elder based blade now but if i change my gear, do you think starforge can be a better choice?
or should i use elder blade with no fortify support?

Well I’m sitting at just over 5k hp at lev 91 myself. Only things from this build i am missing are glorious vanity gem and az gloves. Well i haven’t got the recipes yet to craft a sword either using starforge.

Been having fun with this build and I finally started to feel like I can do most content. Didn’t try Uber stuff yet but I can do all the T15+ corrupted maps with rippy mods and I only die when I’m greedy (picking up an item in the middle of a map full of monsters)
I managed to sneak in there a lvl 1 precision just for the watcher’s eye I got.

Here’s my build if anyone needs some help following this guide: Poe Profile

i can’t seem to have my damage close to 61m or even 10m for that matter on pob only 1m :( but i already have almost same set up http://poe-profile.info/profile/Xenophobia7115 and i also have made a crafted exquisite blade but i might redo the multimod on it https://i.imgur.com/A8rikrK.png

Like Furty said, many things arent’ taken into account in PoB.

It seems that Pride is now properly implemented in PoB, but you have to manually change it in the “Calcs” tab, by selecting the Pride skill on the left (under Main Skill) and chose Maximum effect instead of Initial effect.

For ES you also have to craft a jewel (whatever the base) and write “Gain 20% of Maximum Life as Extra Maximum Energy Shield” as an implicit for the Glorious Vanity to be a taken into account.

Now for Impale you have to calculate yourself how much more physical damage you do with it and add it manually to an item. I’m still not really sure how to add it, the fomula itself is pretty easy but I don’t really understand how to calculate the effective added phys damage.
With this build and if I’m not mistaken, we get 5 impale stacks, 80% impale chance and 89% increased impale effect (100% chance and 108% inc effect if we take dread banner instead of war banner).
If someone is familiar with it, it would be nice if he could say how much more phys damage we do exactly… (I found someone using the same skills and nodes and he calculated 103%, I don’t really know how though…)

You also have to add 15% more damage from the Impact node of Slayer ascendancy, and the Culling from the Bane of Legends isn’t taken into account as well (I guess it’s a bit harder to add).

All of this to say that PoB’s dps is really far from what it really is…

Thanks for the time you put into this guide. Has helped me a lot.

Quick question – is it better to use Thief’s Torment or rare rings with element resist + -manacost ?

At the moment my mana is fine, but I am lacking int. Had to take +30 int on skill tree to use blue gems.

Thief’s torment is great for getting Cyclone Cyclone builds off the ground, but a poor end-game choice. My preferred recourse is to use Enlighten Support Enlighten Support and a crafted affix that restores Mana based on damage taken. Check the gem links and gear section for more info!

Would “critical strike chance” be fine as an additional modifier after regal orbing my Exquisite Blade (tier 1 roll)?

Absolutely. You don’t have to be overly picky, and while I try to include as many alternatives as possible there is also a ton of variability when it comes to weapons.

was looking threw and could not find recommended enchants for gloves boots and helm? can point in the right direction pls. Thx

Cyclone damage is the best choice for helmet, but attack speed isn’t far off either. Boots just take the attack speed on kill. Gloves makes little difference.

I got a Watcher’s Eye for cheap. What slot should I be sticking it in?

It doesn’t really matter as long as it’s not displacing your Glorious Vanity Glorious Vanity.
