Grenadier Gemling Legionnaire Endgame Build

Obliterate bosses with instant-detonation Cluster Grenades.

Introduction

This build is centered around pure grenade firepower; a devastating setup built around the new Ascendancy node, Advanced Thaumaturgy, that grants unique quality bonuses to all skills. With 31% quality, it gives Cluster Grenades 62% reduced detonation time which reduces their detonation time to a staggering 0.02 seconds! Instead of the projectiles popping out into a delayed, scattered AoE, the animation is bypassed completely — all 72 projectiles detonate instantly in a hyper-focused blast directly in front of you for immense, concentrated burst damage.

Mapping is an absolute breeze with this setup. Oil Grenade effortlessly clears out large packs of trash enemies, while a quick burst of Explosive Grenades will instantly wipe out any rare monsters in your path.

The true endgame potential of this build relies on the new Redemption unique. We utilize its special ability “Explosive Rhythm” and “Explosive Fervour” to give grenade skills zero cooldown for 10 seconds while also granting an additional projectile for massive burst windows. However, a well-crafted Cannonade Crossbow with +5 to Projectile Skills would also be viable for big damage as well.

If you’re looking for a way to league start or start a new character, we’ve prepared a complete leveling guide which can be found by following the link below.

Strengths and Weaknesses

Strengths
  • One-shots juiced up bosses and all pinnacles even in a party.
  • Easy 1/2 button clear with Oil Grenade and Explosive Grenade.
  • Extremely cheap to start playing.
  • Built in defensives without requiring much effort.
Weaknesses
  • Requires high life regen due to Berserk.
  • Grenades will ruin screen clarity.
  • Need to be right on top of the boss to one shot.

Build Mechanics

At its core, this build combines:

  • Cluster Grenade for focused one shot damage — each shot lets all 72 projectiles stack and hit at once.
  • Oil Grenade applies exposure and is strong enough to clear trash while mapping.
  • Explosive Grenade has over 300k tooltip DPS and is used to clean up tanky rare enemies.
  • Gas Grenade breaks armour, Flash Grenade to heavy stun, and Voltaic Grenade for fun.

The core synergy comes from stacking flat physical + flat fire damage while leveraging and scaling “fire damage and gain extra fire damage”. We stack a massive 64 Rage on this build, but have to offset Berserk with high life regen on our gear. The Gemling’s quality bonus gives us an additional 12 Rage from Berserk, with an extra 4 coming from the helmet socket.

Skill Rotation

Map Clearing

  • Use Oil Grenade for clear — it applies Exposure, ignites the ground, and has enough damage to kill trash mobs.
  • Rare enemies? One shot of Explosive Grenade will take care of them.
  • When popping Ritual or Expedition, use Gas Grenade and Oil Grenade to cover the area which will break armour and apply Exposure. This allows you to annihilate everything while you spam Explosive Grenade.

Bossing

  • Before you engage the boss room, spam the standard grenade skill that comes with the Redemption unique until you are at 9 stacks. You will need to learn the timing per boss to maximize the uptime on explosive fervour. It has a timer and if it runs out without you firing a grenade skill, it will reset back to 0.
  • Shoot Gas Grenade once or twice at the boss to break armour.
  • Shoot Oil Grenade to apply Exposure (lowers elemental resistance) until you hit 10 stacks and activate Explosive Fervour.
  • Get right on top of the boss and hit the boss with Cluster Grenade, dealing extreme damage.

Gameplay Tips

  • Don’t overcommit defenses. A solid armour/evasion hybrid for every piece of gear is more than enough to scale up to around 70% armour and 40% evasion which feels just fine while mapping.
  • Keep moving between shots. Fire and keep it moving.
  • Spirit Management! Aim for 200 total spirit, 230 if you’re maxing out the build. You will need both Vitality I and Vitality II to sustain life regen due to Berserk.
  • Weapon Sets: Redemption actually loses all stacks when you fire from a second weapon. So we can use only this weapon and nothing else.

Video Guide

The written guide will always be more updated than the video. Should you have any questions, please refer to the written guide first. The video should be used as a proof of concept and an example of how the build plays, as well as a brief explanation of its core concepts.

Gem Info

Below you will find a planner with a full breakdown of your skill setup.

Important! You will want to ensure you have an equal amount of Support Gems of each color. This means if you have 12 Red Support Gems, you will also need 12 Blue and 12 Green Support Gems in order to gain the full benefits of this build. Ensure you have at minimum 10 of each color to take advantage of Gem Enthusiast as well. Verisium Support Gems do not count as a Red, Blue, or Green Support Gem! They will actually break this node and should not be used!

Time of Need is optional here, and should only be taken if you have enough Spirit to enable it without compromising on the rest of the build. Since we heavily focus on Cooldown Reduction passives, we can easily knock Time of Need below 5 seconds. If you happen to have the currency to replace Redemption with a Cannonade Crossbow, this cooldown will fall below 4 seconds. Adding this Spirit Gem will effectively erradicate curses and ailments from the game, so it is worth working towards adding to the build. See the high-budget section of the build if this is something you want and need to figure out where to pull the extra Spirit from.

Ascendancy

The Gemling Ascendancy is the backbone of this build, offering build enabling mechanics:

  1. Essence of Virtue – Grants skill: Virtuous Barrier. This will cover the majority of our defensive scaling for the build.
  2. Advanced Thaumaturgy – Gem quality grants socketed skills an additional effect. This will differ from skill to skill, but can only be checked if a skill gem is equipped.
  3. Bolstering Implants – +2 to Level of all skills with a Strength requirement.
  4. Gem Studded – For each color of socketed support gem that is most numerous, gain:
    • Green – 40% less movement speed penalty from using skills while moving.
    • Red – Hits against you have no Critical Damange Bonus
    • Blue – Skills have 30% less cost.
      • You will have all three of these as long as you have balanced your support gems properly!

Gearing

Gear Affixes

In the table below, you will see a breakdown of the most important affixes for each gear slot, as well as what unique items the build uses. These are listed in order of priority, so consider your gearing options carefully.

Make sure that you are capped at 75% all Elemental Resistances and Chaos Resistance. You will want to run all Armour/Evasion hybrid gear except for your gloves. At minimum, you will need to get Life Regeneration on both rings and amulet. If you have less than 180 Life Regeneration per second you will take constant damage due to Berserk.

Important! If you run a map with reduced regeneration rates, then you will have a bad time if you don’t have around 230 Life Regeneration per second, and will have to avoid those maps.

If you’re still having issues with Life Regeneration, Morior Invictus can be replaced with an Armour/Evasion base crafted body armour with upwards of 34 Life Regeneration. This should be enough to solve your problem if other pieces are still out of reach. Luckily, most gear pieces with Life Regeneration are sold at a reduced price, a huge benefit to the build.

Important! The Unset Rings are not suggestions, they are required for you to insert some extra throwaway skills. This is mandatory to enable you to balance Support Gems for Gem Studded!

Unique Items

The unique item listed below is considered mandatory in order to get the build to perform as expected.

  • Redemption – Cannot load or fire ammunition. Explosive Rhythm grants 10% cooldown reduction per stack. Explosive Fervour grants 15% attack speed per different grenade used recently, causes grenade skills to ignore cooldown and fire an additional projectile, and makes grenades explode on impact.

Socketables

This table will show you what socketables are used for each gear slot. While many slots will likely be used for resistance runes, pay particular attention to the Helm, Belt, and Main Hand slot.

Belt

There are many useful affixes on jewels, and this build has three sockets for them to be inserted in. You will need to run a Prism of Belief with +3 to Cluster Grenade Skills. A Heart of the Well with Gain % of Damage as Extra Fire Damage and Recover 2% of Mana on Kill. Honestly, there are a ton of good stats on these that would be useful. And then a Ruby with the stats below:

Jewels

  • % Increased Fire Damage.
  • % Increased Stun Buildup.
  • % Increased Flammability Magnitude.
  • % Damage Against Enemies With Fully Broken Armour.

Flasks and Charms

The recommended setup for your flasks and charms is:

  • Life Flask – Gains X charges per second | % increased amount recovered
  • Mana Flask – Lavianga’s Spirits or Gains X charges per second | % increased amount recovered
  • Charms – Rite of Passage “Spirit of the Boar” | Freeze-Protection Charm | Arakaali’s Gift

The High Budget Endgame Setup

Once you have a big divine budget, you will want to prioritize some big things to really skyrocket your damage.

  • Headhunter or Mageblood Belt
    • Personal preference here is Headhunter. The belt is significantly cheaper than a well-rolled Mageblood, and provides a ton of offensive and defensive bonuses as you map.
    • If you have the budget for a Mageblood, you’ll want one that’s rolled Bismuth, Silver, and Quicksilver, preferably with a duplicate. This will grant you 45% Elemental Resistance, 30% Movement Speed, and 30% Skill Speed. If no duplicates, any defensive roll with Armour or Evasion will also work.
  • Jewel options are listed below.
    • Heart of the Well with Extra Fire Damage, Increased Exposure Effect, and Mana/Life on Kill.
    • Prism of Belief for +3 to Cluster Grenades.
    • You could also run a Megalomaniac as well instead of the Ruby.
  • If you’re hitting all your resistance caps and defensive goals, a unique helmet may be added to the build. The choices we suggest are either Thrillsteel with a +30 Spirit Corrupt, or Decree of Acuity for the massive defensive bonuses it provides.
  • The last item is the Rite of Passage (Spirit of the Boar). This will give you gain 20% of Damage as Extra Fire Damage, Always Inflict Bleeding on Hit and have 20% Reduced Damage Taken.
  • As mentioned in the beginning of the guide, this build would also do massive damage with a solid Cannonade Crossbow that gives grenade skills fire an additional projectile and +5 to Projectile skills. They are very expensive crossbows though! Since we one-shot bosses with a single Cluster Grenade, you don’t technically need the Explosive Fervour that Redemption gives and could pump more damage if you have the currency to do so.
