Impending Doom Chaos Gemling Legionnaire Endgame Build

Unleash chaos frogs upon Wraeclast and damn your enemies with curses!

Introduction

Turn every Curse into a chain reaction of Doom Blasts, Witchtoads, and screen wide Chaos destruction. The Chaos Impending Doom Gemling Legionnaire is a high end Chaos caster built around rapidly triggering Doom Blast through Despair, Impending Doom, Spell Cascade, and Doedre’s Undoing. Instead of waiting for a Curse to expire naturally, you overlap Despair curse areas, which continually replace each another, causing Impending Doom to trigger repeated Doom Blast explosions across the screen. When mixed with other Support Gems and Passives, this ends up dealing an extraordinarily high amount of damage.

Doedre’s Undoing adds another major damage layer by turning Despair into Cursed Ground that continually spawns Witchtoads. These aggressive summons seek out nearby enemies and explode for massive amounts of damage through Dark Consequences, giving the build strong automated clear alongside its Doom Blast detonations.

The Gemling Legionnaire Ascendancy lets us push Skill Levels and Quality far beyond a normal caster. By combining items and passives like Advanced Thaumaturgy, Gem Studded, Darkness Enthroned, Fox Idol, as well as additional Skill Quality from gear, Despair can reach the Quality threshold required to cost 0 Mana, allowing it to be cast continuously without worrying about mana costs.

The build also has insanely high defenses from the Gemling Legionnaires Ascendency Virtuous Barrier and Gems like Arctic Armour, Refutation from Cast on Dodge and Withering Presence. Not to mention that you don’t need to worry about much Chaos Resisance if you use Palm of the Dreamer since that gives you Impurity without needing Spirit.

This is an endgame-focused build with several important gear and mechanical breakpoints, as well as different items you can choose from depending on your budget. Once properly assembled, it offers extremely fast map clear, strong single-target and boss damage, great defenses, a primary skill that costs zero mana, all by simply pressing one button.

Strengths and Weaknesses

Strengths
  • Excellent Screen Wide Clear
  • Very high Single Target Damage
  • Zero Mana Costs
  • Great Defense
Weaknesses
  • Need specific Uniques and Jewels
  • Can get very expensive on high end.

Build Mechanics

Offensively, at its core, the Chaos Impending Doom Gemling Legionnaire is built around repeatedly forcing Despair to expire almost instantly in order to trigger Doom Blast as often as possible. Instead of waiting for the Curse duration to end like it normally would, Spell Cascade and Doedre’s Undoing create overlapping Cursed Ground that continually replaces itself, causing Impending Doom to detonate again and again, while also spitting out multiple Witchtoads from Doedre’s Undoing.

The build accomplishes this through:

  • Impending Doom and Doom Blast: Impending Doom grants Doom Blast, which triggers whenever the supported Curse expires or is removed. Doom Blast inherits the level of the Curse it supports, making +Skill Levels our strongest damage scalers. This setup can push Despair all the way to Level 40 multiple ways.
  • Doedre’s Undoing and Spell Cascade: Doedre’s Undoing turns Despair into Cursed Ground, while Spell Cascade creates multiple overlapping Curse areas. As new areas overwrite existing ones, the previous Curse expires and immediately triggers Doom Blast, which chains to any enemy inside of any of your cursed areas
  • Witchtoads: Doedre’s Undoing‘s Cursed Ground also spawns Witchtoads. These automatically seek nearby enemies and explode with Dark Consequences, giving us a massive additional source of automated Chaos damage while we continue casting Despair. This typically does more damage than Impending Doom.
  • Trickster’s Shard: Trickster’s Shard creates up to four Fractured Mimics that repeat our supported casts. Their additional Despair casts create even more Curse replacements, Spell Cascade overlaps, and Doom Blast triggers without reducing the damage of our own casts.
  • Zero Mana Despair: Through Advanced Thaumaturgy, Gem Studded, Skill Quality from gear, Darkness Enthroned, and a socketed Fox Idol, Despair can reach the Quality breakpoint (20%) required to cost 0 Mana. Once this is achieved, we can spam our primary skill endlessly without spending into Mana sustain. This also allows us to take passives or support gems like Zenith II that makes us do 30% more damage if we are above 90% Mana, which we always will be.

Because the build combines Doom Blast, Witchtoads, Fractured Mimics and Cascade overlaps, multiple Chaos damage sources are constantly working at the same time. Once the important Skill Level, Quality, and Cast Speed breakpoints are reached, the result is extremely fast clear with strong single-target scaling that gets unbelievably strong the more currency you put into the budget.

Defensively, this build shines brightly. With close to no help needed in Chaos resistances, thanks in large part to Palm of the Dreamer, Allowing you to use Impurity with the max 20% Quality for 42% Chaos Resistance. Not only that, but you can also support Impurity with Her Declaration to Intimidate all enemies around you, Vitality II for a constant Life regeneration and Cannibalism II that heals you for 3% of your life everytime you kill something.

Virtuous Barrier comes from the Gemling Ascendency and gradually gives you a mote every 1.5 seconds. Each mote buffs you depending on the attritbute. While there is a limit to how many motes you can have, this limit is raised when the more Gems you have equipped. This allows us to equip a plethora of gems to gain a ton of these bonuses. Strength motes give you 2% increased Maximum Life per mote. Dexterity motes give you Evasion, Armour and Energy Shield and Intelligence motes give you bonus life and mana regeneration.

Cast on Dodge is a major part of your defensive toolkit. This simply builds up energy all the time and will cast whatever gems you have supported whenever you dodge. The main one being Refutation, which makes you block all hits and immune to stuns. This is your go to defensive while weaving through packs of enemies. Your final defensive, Arctic Armour is a passive buff that surrounds you in ice and will Blind, Slow and Freeze any enemy who melees you.

Ascendancy

The Gemling Legionnaire Ascendancy is what allows this build to push its Skill Levels, Gem Quality, resource efficiency, and defenses far beyond a standard caster. Each Ascendancy choice directly supports either our Impending Doom damage, our zero-Mana Despair setup, or our ability to stay mobile and survive while continuously casting.

  1. Advanced Thaumaturgy: This is one of the core mechanics of the build and the main reason why Gemling is the best for this build. It grants additional effects to Skills based on their Quality, allowing our Quality stacked Despair to reach 0 Mana Cost, while also greatly improving all of our other skills as well.
  2. Neurological Implants: Grants +2 to the Level of Skills with an Intelligence Requirement, directly increasing the level of all of our important Skills in the build.
  3. Gem Studded: Our setup intentionally balances Blue and Green Support Gems as the two most important colors, allowing us to gain both 30% less Skill Cost and 40% less Movement Speed penalty while using Skills. The reduced cost is essential for reaching the the zero cost on mana for the Despair breakpoint, while the movement bonus makes casting while moving much smoother.
  4. Essence of Virtue: Grants Virtuous Barrier for zero Spirit defensive Skill that generates attribute based Gemstone Motes. Because the build uses a large number of Skills with different attribute requirements, we can accumulate substantial passive defensive bonuses to Energy Shield, Armour, Evasion, and regeneration.

Skill Tree

This interactive skill tree will provide you with an overview of the final state of the build. When assigning travel Attribute Nodes, you will want to account for the requirements of your Skill Gems and Gear, and may have to respec some nodes as you find upgrades and progress. You only need 84 Strength and 80 Dexterity. The rest is all put in to Intellect. Work your way around the outer circle picking up as many Jewel Sockets as possible.

Gem Setup

The Gem setup is built around repeatedly triggering Doom Blast while layering additional Chaos damage, Wither, Curses, Intimidate and defensive utility around it, as well as some filler unsused Skill Gems to help grant you more motes from Virtuous Barrier. Unlike a traditional caster, our damage comes from several Skills working together at once, with Despair acting as the main trigger for the entire build.

Skill Rotation

The rotation is very simple and revolves almost solely around spamming Despair. Frost Wall is used both to get some room between you and the enemies, but it also does a massive amount of damage once it explodes from your Impending Doom. Everything else is used defensively or are passive from your aura. Sniper’s Mark is not important, but will increase the damage of your next Critical Strike by 100%, making it nice to use on bosses for some extra damage.

  • Cast Despair to deal damage.
  • Cast Frost Walll on harder big packs.
  • Cast Sniper’s Mark on bosses.

Gearing

In the table below, you will see a breakdown of the most important affixes for each gear slot, as well as what unique items the build uses. These are listed in order of priority, so consider your gearing options carefully.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Make sure that you are capped at 75% Elemental Resistances and meet all Attribute Requirements when you are changing gear pieces. Since we’re wearing so many uniques, we are very tight on Elemental resistances. You do not need any Chaos Resistances due to Chaos Inoculation.

Instilling Your Amulet

To gain access to the ability to instill (also known as an anoint) your Amulet, you will need to progress the Delirium Questline in the Endgame mapping system. When done, you will be able to combine three Delirium Liquids in a certain order and instill your Amulet, which rewards you by giving you a free notable node from your Passive tree.

We have two choices that we need to obtain. Parahon and Zarokh’s Gift. One goes on the Amulet, the other will be instill from your Raven-Touched Helmet. Raven-Touched comes from a Raven-Touched Shard, which when socketed, it makes Helmets Raven-Touched, allowing you to Instill another notable passive. Tangmazu, the Raven Trickster has lower chance to drop the shard.

  • Paragon – Gives you 5% Quality to all Skills and +5 to all Attributes.
  • Zarokh’s Gift – Gives you an extra Jewel Socket.

Mandatory Unique Items

Runeseeker’s Call This is mandatory due to the massive amount of skill levels you get. It doesn’t matter if you get 5 or 6 socket.

Palm of the Dreamer This is a huge part of your Chaos Resistance and your damage from the Dreaming Gloom Shrine aura.

Morior Invictus This is mandatory for the 5% Quality to All Skills and % to All Elemental Resistances. The socket count doesn’t matter as much outside of that.

Optional Unique Options

Mageblood: This is your best option. This comes with many different choices of buffs gained from its Legacies.

Headhunter: This is a great option to use while waiting to purchase your Headhunter

Jewels

Your Jewel choices are vital to your build. These will help you in achieving your Culling Strike Threshold, your Elemental resistances and your much needed Energy Shield.

  • Split Personality allows you to start putting your passive points starting from the Shadow’s starting point, rather than at the Mercenary’s Starting Point. While the build is possible without this, I would say this is borderline mandatory in order to maximize your cast speed and Critical Strike gains. You gain too much extra Critical Strike Change and Critical Strike damage in comparison to the far inferior stats that you’d be stuck with if you had to slot in the starting passives from the Mercenary. Note that when you build your tree that you must route from the Mercenary starting point and work your way to the first Jewel slot in front of the Shadow starting point, then continue working your way to the first point for the Shadow. Only at that point will the game let you start refunding your points from the Mercenary starting point.
  • Prism of Belief is mandatory to gain the extra levels of Despair. +3 can be pricey, so start with a +2 until you can afford the +3.
  • Voices – It goes without saying that this highly coveted Jewel is helpful. This gives you up to 4 extra Jewel Sockets, at a very hefty price. If you have the budget or are lucky enough to get one to drop, make sure to slot in the Rare Sapphire Jewels listed below.
  • Rare Sapphire Jewels For the rest of the Jewel sockets, look for a mix of Triggered Spells Deal Increased Spell Damage, Faster Curse Activation, Increased Cast Speed, Increased Critical Spell Damage Bonus, Increased Critical Damage Bonus, Increased Critical Hit Chance for Spells and Increased Critical Hit Chance

Flasks and Charms

The recommended setup for your flasks and charms is:

  • Life Flask: A Life flask with % Recovery applied Instantly and % of Recovery applied Instantly
  • Mana Flask – Lavianga’s Spirits We use this full time. This makes your mana flask become passive and constantly give you mana.
  • Charms – The Fall of the Axe, Rite of Passage Spirit of the Bear or Cat. Natural Thawing Charm of the Surgeon.
