Ultimate Cyclone Slayer Build Guide - Slay the Stars (PoE Ultimatum 3.14)

Furty

1064

Introduction

Cyclone Cyclone is a perennial powerhouse that immediately asserted itself as one of the staple skills in the melee metascape on its inception. Slayer also received a few redesigned keystones, and is now one of the perfect pairings for crit-based melee builds. Despite a few tweaks in recent patches Cyclone Cyclone remains — not only viable — one of the most potent melee end-game builds available. The result of many leagues of careful build chemistry is a Cyclone Cyclone build of monstrous proportions. With the ability to melt any content in a matter of moments, our Crit-Based Cyclone Slayer is doubtless one of the strongest overall melee builds to ever grace Path of Exile.

Uber Awakener

No content is out of reach for this build. With 9000 or more effective Life, increased maximum Resistances, tons of Armour, and more, this build is not lacking in defense. It is always a great time to play Cyclone Cyclone, and this is the most overpowered way to do it. Our Crit-Based Cyclone Slayer is a truly unstoppable force that is the perfect candidate to fulfill any task.

Since Patch 3.11 Harvest League, Cyclone Cyclone no longer grants stun immunity and Starforge Starforge was heavily nerfed. This prompts us to changed our Ascendancy path and switch over to Atziri's Disfavour Atziri's Disfavour as our early game weapon, later transitioning to a Rare Exquisite Blade Exquisite Blade for maximum damage when our bank has been built up. In 3.14 Ultimatum League the build has no significant changes in power or pathing.

Build Assessment

Pros

+ Absurd damage potential — can basically scale indefinitely with enough currency

+ Excellent clear speed — one of the S-Tier melee builds

+ Solid all-round defenses — excellent Level 100 candidate

+ Melts bosses in the blink of an eye

+ Crit-based build with incredible scaling (~88% Crit Chance in top-end gear)

+ All map mods are possible (except no regeneration), immune to reflect

+ Strongest way to play Cyclone Cyclone in the end-game

Cons

Not a good Cyclone Cyclone build for beginners — knowledge of how to upgrade a character and quickly generate currency is very helpful

Expensive to achieve top-end gear, depending on the popularity and availability of items

Cyclone Cyclone can be a polarizing skill — careful movement is necessary for dangerous enemies

Path of Building and Furty’s Character

Make sure you are using the Path of Building Community Fork to include Impale DPS in the calculations.

You can find the Ultimate Cyclone Slayer’s Path of Building information here.

We use the Path of Building Community Fork for all of our builds, which is highly recommended. If you are encountering errors importing the build, please ensure you are using the Community Fork.

You can also find a link to Furty’s personal character for this build — last played in the 3.10 Delirium challenge league — by clicking here.

Playstyle and Build Mechanics

Cyclone Cyclone is a very simple and straightforward skill. Now a channeled ability, your character spins around and attacks extremely quickly — technically it is considered a movement skill, although it slows your character. By stacking a lot of damage, Critical Strike Chance and Multiplier, Attack Speed, Impale, and Movement Speed, our Cyclone Slayer glides effortlessly through maps while shredding packs and bosses alike.

This is an exclusively Physical damage build, which makes it relatively easy to itemize for early on. As you start to become more ambitious with armour acquisitions, gear can become a little more difficult and/or expensive to obtain — after all, crit items are highly sought after for many builds. Fortunately, many of the items can be crafted yourself, and for only a few Exalted Orb Exalted Orbs you outfit yourself with extremely strong items.

Simply enter a map, Leap Slam Leap Slam into a pack, and Cyclone Cyclone through it to blow it to pieces.

Leveling

As a reminder, we have several guides to help you level up a character.

Start out with Ground Slam Ground Slam, which you should use until Level 12, when Sunder Sunder can be acquired. Sunder is a fairly potent leveling skill due to its high base damage and ease of use. Your Sunder links, in order of priority, are:

  1. Sunder Sunder
  2. Melee Physical Damage Support Melee Physical Damage Support
  3. Onslaught Support Onslaught Support
  4. Multistrike Support Multistrike Support
  5. Maim Support Maim Support
  6. Ruthless Support Ruthless Support

Just use what you can get until the gems become available — Maim Support Maim Support and Ruthless Support Ruthless Support are available very early, along with Onslaught Support Onslaught Support, but you will have to wait until Act II for Melee Physical Damage Support Melee Physical Damage Support. Added Fire Damage Support Added Fire Damage Support is an option in the meantime, if you are using a Tabula Rasa Tabula Rasa.

Blood and Sand Blood and Sand is available right at Level 4, and should be picked up immediately. Acquire Herald of Ash Herald of Ash and Herald of Purity Herald of Purity in Act II to help you level up. You can get Pride Pride in Act III after doing Lost in Love and drop Herald of Purity Herald of Purity.

Cyclone Cyclone can honestly be used as soon as you can sustain it (e.g. using a ring such as Thief's Torment Thief's Torment, but we recommend waiting until the latter part of the leveling process, or even after finishing Kitava. If you are league starting, you will probably want to do a little mapping before making the full switch, as Cyclone Cyclone is a relatively weak skill until it gets a bit of scaling behind it.

FAQ

Which Anointments are Best for my Amulet?

As with all anointment advice, you can make a variety of different choices depending on how you want to tailor your build. Consider these recommendations:

  • Fatal Blade — Our default recommendation for pure damage performance if using Swords.
  • Vitality Void — Expensive, but a great option for increasing leech to the maximum. Recommended if you forget to keep Blood Rage Blood Rage active on bosses sometimes.
  • Discipline and Training — Big boost to survivability and maximum life.

Why Do You Take Point Blank on the Tree?

Should only be used with Soul Tether Soul Tether and Glorious Vanity Glorious Vanity in niche setups.

I’m Having Mana Issues

Make sure you have the crafted affix -# to Total Mana Cost of Skills on both your rings. If you do not have those affixes, you will need to disable one of your auras and acquire % of Physical Attack Damage Leeched as Mana on one of your gear pieces (recommended: Gloves).

I Can’t Afford Atziri's Acuity Atziri's Acuity. Should I take Vaal Pact on the Tree?

This is a complicated question, because it largely depends on you, your gear, what league you are playing on, and your priorities as a player.

If you already have Glorious Vanity Glorious Vanity and have specced into Corrupted Soul, we recommend pathing to Vaal pact (3 point investment). If you have not yet done this, the answer is a lot murkier, as it is a 5 point investment from Golem’s Blood, and you will have to decide for yourself.

due to the changes to corrupted blood not longer treated as bleeding – we might need a flask of staunching – and therefore the endless hunger ascendancy becomes more invaluable. what do you think?

at least, this IS a significant change to the slayer in 3.14 – imho.

I would say it makes Endless Hunger less valuable, personally, and I’m looking at swapping it out in favour of the keystone on the tree.

    Furty, mate, hi!

First, I would like to thank you for the guide. Since 3.9 religiously following your build and everything has been going well all the way, I’m having a blast right now at POE’s endgame, Cyclone is very enjoyable. I had a little difficulty at first, especially to pass the 1M DPS mark, but after getting the unique items, like Atziri’s Acuity gloves, Kaom’s Heart with increase damage, and Starforge with good pdps (850), the build took off.

Currently, without the custom Exquisite Blade yet, only with Starforge, having already updated the build to 3.14 according to your guide, having exchanged Flesh and Stone for Herald of Purity, and, according to POB Community, if I am selecting the correct options at POB’s configuration, I am reaching 13.1M of DPS, with 100% Hit Chance, 94.6% Critical Chance, 27 of AoE Radius and 6.5k of life at lvl 95. In addition, I got a great ring with -9 all mana cost, helped a lot with mana issues, I have Cyclone zero cost and only 2 mana cost for Leap Slam.

Only different from your build, in addition to the rare ones, which are never the same, just an Unset ring that I put on to use the Blood and Sand gem, which grants almost 1.5M of damage increase and I didn’t want to leave it. I am now in the min / max phase of the build.

For maximum build optimization IMO, only the custom Exquisite Blade (which I will talk about it later), a new Atziri’s Acuity with your “Attacks have + 1% Critical Strike Chance” enchant, a Kaom’s Heart with better Increased Damage implicit (mine has only 43%, max is 50%) and a new Watcher’s Eye with Precision Attack Speed and Impale 2 Additional Hits explicits (mine has only this last).

Some questions, however, if you can kindly help:

    1) In the last comment, I saw you responding to consider another keystone with bleed immunity, instead of Endless Hunger, due to the nerf caused by patch 3.14. Which keystone is that at the tree with bleed immunity? And if you recommend exchanging Endless Hunger for Bane of Legends or Impact at Ascendancy, in case of choosing that keystone?

    2) For the latest build update, I’m looking for a legacy Exquisite Blade 60% critical multiplier with fortify lvl 20 explicit and 1000+ pdps, like this mirror level sword (grinding hard to get that money level haha):

    Item Class: Two Hand Swords
    Rarity: Rare
    Foe Gutter
    Exquisite Blade
    ————
    Two Handed Sword
    Quality: + 48% (augmented)
    Physical Damage: 414-717 (augmented)
    Critical Strike Chance: 7.12% (augmented)
    Attacks per Second: 1.77 (augmented)
    Weapon Range: 13
    ————
    Requirements:
    Level: 70
    Str: 119
    Dex: 131
    ————
    Sockets: W-W-W-W-W-W
    ————
    Item Level: 87
    ————
Physical Modifiers have 8% increased Effect (enchant)
    ————
+ 60% to Global Critical Strike Multiplier (implicit)
    ————
Socketed Gems are Supported by Level 20 Fortify
    218% increased Physical Damage
Adds 46 to 84 Physical Damage
    31% increased Attack Speed
+ 38% to Global Critical Strike Multiplier
25% increased Critical Strike Chance (crafted)
    + 18% to Quality (crafted)
    ————
    Elder Item
    Warlord Item
    ————
Has Voidforge Skin. You can claim this by shift-clicking this item.
    ————
    Note: ~ price 1 mirror

Having said that, I did some tests on POB and the last gem to replace Fortify with the highest damage increase possible is choosing Close Combat gem, which causes my damage to rise up to max damage possible of 29.5M (+60.7% total DPS inc. Impale), possibly reaching 30M dps plus with all that improvements I talked earlier. Second is Damage on Full Life (+50.6% = 27M total DPS inc. Impale). Third is Pulverize, but I’m thinking of not choosing it because there is a big reduction in Attack Speed, despite the increase in Area Effect, which causes less damage increase in general (+36.7% total DPS inc. Impale = 25M total DPS inc. Impale). I am not taking into account Concentrated Effect gem because of the negligible increase in DPS at POB.

In your build, however, you do not recommend choosing Close Combat because “as you often want to play to the edges of your Cyclone radius in dangerous situations, as well as having natural counter synergy with Lion’s Roar.” However, despite using a lot of Lion’s Roar, I am constantly in the middle of enemies, especially in Delirium maps, and in some tests, I saw that for Close Combat to stop working it requires a relatively long distance from the enemies to your character (+10 distance until the damage starts decreasing, if i’m not wrong). I’m afraid to choose Damage on Full Life gem, because I don’t have any shield and I’m not always on full life, despite the very intense life leech with Vaal Pact due to Atziri’s Acuity Gloves. Having said all that, what would you recommend for a seventh gem, replacing Fortify gem, in the future?

If you can also take a look at my POB and recommend any improvements for min / max of the build, I will be very grateful! Follow pastebin: https://pastebin.com/U7FV4T7G

Thanks again and keep up the great work helping us all with your builds and guides!

Close Combat can be an enormous damage increase and if you find yourself always taking full or near full use of its effect then it is a perfectly viable alternative and more of a matter of preference. That blade looks amazing and that legacy version that I first played on 3.7 using that setup felt incredible.

Keystone I was referring to is Unwavering Stance for stun immunity, allowing us to scoop up other keystones and either leech through punctures, run a bleed flask, or seek out the corrupting blood immunity on a jewel.

Due to the craziness of league launches I don’t have the time to do full POB breakdowns at the moment, particularly if you have things up and running okay, but if you poke me a little later in the league I’ll take another look!

Prior to the 3.14 update my mana reserves were fine (great build BTW) but after the update—my Flesh and Stone is saying it’s reserving at 37.3 instead of 35 and I cant get F&S, B&S, Pride and a banner all up at the same time like I could prior to the update—was something nerfed? any help would be appreciated.

Maim Support Maim Support increases reservation, and F&S was increased from 25%—>35%, which is why the guide now recommends Herald of Purity Herald of Purity.

Hey again, I always tend to come back to this build each league, idk what it is about it. Anyways, this league, I have finally discovered and understand PoB and am now using it more than this website. I am using your PoB link for this build. I am a bit confused though. Your PoB tree, doesn’t go to where you want us to socket Glorious Vanity and you don’t have Soul Tether as the belt but a rare Stygian Vise instead. Nor do you have a Watcher’s Eye listed. Should I be following your passive tree you have linked on the website for Glorious Vanity/Soul Tether and for gearing, or should I be following the PoB?

Is Glorious Vanity/Soul Tether left out because you have Atziri’s Acuity on the PoB? Are we meant to drop Glorious Vanity/Soul Tether when we can get our hands on Atziri’s Acuity, is that why?

Also, on PoB you have a 6L Exquisite Blade and when mousing over it, the sockets you picked are all green sockets and with that being the only 6L on the build, your suggested Cyclone links are 2 green, 3 red, 1 blue. Just want to confirm accuracy and if wrong, let you know it shows 6 green sockets.

As a suggestion, PoB has a notes section. It’d be really cool/a great idea if you could put a majority of what you have on this website, in the notes. Like the leveling section, the gearing section, the gem link section, the FAQ section, and other useful tidbits of information. It’d make your PoB links you give us so much more awesome! :)

Hello, I’m almost at a place where i can afford a 6l armor (not a fan of kaoms heart). I’ve played cyclone a few times already and i wonder if i could swap belly of the beast for Carcass Jack or Loreweave, do you think a change like that would be ok? Thanks for the build btw, its really cool.

    Hi,

I have been playing your build since this league and there is something which i just can’t figure out. How do you leech energy shield while blood rage is up, i use the glorious vanity jewel and the soul tether.

Looks like immortal ambition was nerfed I think that might be the reason I can’t leech any ES this league.

Hi Furty, thanks for the great build. With the 3.14 patch, it seems that they nerfed Immortal Ambition since there is now a separate stat that caps out Energy Shield leech. With Blood Rage active, I cannot seem to recover energy shield at all and without it, the recovery rate is too slow to be effective.

Have you experience this and what do you suggest changing?

Hey, I would have two questions regarding the build (sorry in advance not playing PoE that long)

    1. I checked the build in PoB and would just like to know why there is no chaos resistance (only on helm ofc) and it’s at -46% in total.

    2. I am at ~ Lv. 83 right now and didn’t get Enlighten Support at any point but so far it’s working fine without (76 mana), what is exactly the use/need of enlighten support?

For Enlighten: “Enlighten is primarily used to decrease the amount of mana reservation of linked skills. This effect is multiplicative with the effects of x% Reduced Mana Reservation modifiers. Though Enlighten can also be used to decrease the mana cost of linked active skills, Inspiration Support is better for that purpose.” Keep in mind, this gem needs to reach level 2 before it starts working. The higher the level and quality, the more it works.

For Chaos, your Life Leech should make it so its not a problem as Chaos applies poison, which is a DoT that ticks every 2 seconds.

Thanks for the fast reply! So in theory maxing out chaos resistance would be unnecessary (waste of currency)? I am currently at 44% and probably already wasted a lot trying to keep it up there, was about to buy somethin with 31% to max it out.

I wouldn’t buy anything with chaos resist, completely ignore it. My 90 cyclone from last league using this build has -33% and only has chaos resist from whatever may be giving it, and I couldn’t tell you what it is.
